The market lhigh brightne is bleached pulp has been
zgnaling to increase the currently practiced brightnesslevels 88 90 ISO to higher values ofabout 92 ISO
The motivation for such a demandhas heen the high price
ofoptical hrightening agents at the paper mill as v ell as
the environmental riks concerning the excessive we ofsuch
additives and also the consumer market demand
Obtaining 92 ISO hrightness is often possible by using
bleaching technologies alrea v eTisting and irnplanted in
the mills hlfl the cost ofchemical reagents rnay be ex cessi
ve In some cases ohtaining these brightness levels is not
posihle since the suppl v ofoxidants is notsufficient and
or the bleaching plant is notahle to receive neyoxidants
and or increase their dosages
According toll l an alternative sequence to achieve 92
ISO is D EOP D EP D but it recommend to use high do
sages of CIO at stages Do and Dr efjicient rvashing and
normal time and temperature conditions at the various ble
aching stages The authors also suggest sequence
D EOP DP as an alternative for 92 ISO hrightness but
in this case thev indicate the need ofeven higher dosages
ofelO at stages Do and DrThe use ofh vdrogenperoxide and ozone has significantv increased in the past years particularl in the
production ofECF ECF Light and TCFpulps The in
creasing need qfthepulp and paper industry to meet the
requirements of environmental organs and market de

JoY ever the use ofchlorine dioxide as main bleaching
agent for achieving high brightness levels maygroyv difjicult if there is no additional capacity of chlorine dioxide
production The quickest yvay to overcorne thil need has
been the llse qfhydrogen peroxide and ozone in replacement for the additional dioxide that yt ould he required to
increase the finalpulp brightnessOzone has been conquering more and more room at
several bleaching plants yvhether they are ECF ECF Li
