Tuesday,22November2016,12:00–2:00pmKennedyTheatreMainstage Dr.TīmotiKaretuwasbornin1937andisadescendantoftheNgāiTūhoeandNgātiKahungunutribes.HeisascholarwhoisnationallyandinternationallyrecognisedforhisknowledgeoftheMāorilanguage.TīmotiisalsoaprolificcomposerandMāoriperformingartsexpert.In1970,hewasappointedasthefirstProfessorofMāoriStudiesattheUniversityofWaikato.In1987hebecamethefirstMāoriLanguageCommissioneratTeTauraWhiriiteReoMāori.Hecontinuedintheroleuntil1999.From2003,TīmotiwastheHeadofTeKōhangaReoNationalTrust.Tīmotihasbeeninvolvedinnumerous

Māoriperformingartscompetitionsasatutor,acomposer,ajudgeandanorganiser.HewastheheadofthenationalMāoriperformingartscompetitionformanyyears.TīmotihasreceivedtwoHonoraryDoctorates;onefromVictoriaUniversityofWellingtonandtheotherfromTheUniversityofWaikato.HeisaDirectorofTePanekiretangaoteReo,aprogrammeestablishedtopromoteexcellenceintheMāorilanguage.TīmotiKaretucontinuestobeastalwartoftheMāorilanguageandisunflinchinginhisdedicationtotheMāorilanguage.HeistheformostexpertinMāorilanguagerevitalisationeffortsandisarolemodelandmentorformanyinthefieldoflanguagerevitalisationbothforeignanddomestic.

RenownedasoneofHawai'i'smostpopularrecordingartists,Keali'iReichelistheaward-winningkumuhulaofHālauKeʻalaokamaile.Hismusic,chant,andhularepresentthebestofHawai'i'straditionalandcontemporarypoetryanddancetoday.Hishālauhasbroughthometopawardsfromtheprestigioushulacompetition,MerrieMonarchFestival,andhehaswonmultipleNāHōkūHanohanoAwardsforhismusic,inadditiontoatopspotonworldmusiccharts.KumuKeali‘ihasspenthislifeeducatingtheworldaboutHawaiianculturethroughmusicanddance.
