    Sanderson Middle School Intensive English UnitMiddle School Intensive English UnitThe Intensive English Unit (IEU) at Sanderson Middle School is forYear 7, 8 and 9 students who speak English as another Language

    and are from a country where English is not the main language.The students enrol in courses that teach English language skills inreading, writing, speaking and listening and provide a pathway tomainstream education in the Middle and Secondary Years ofschooling.

    The courses provide students with the skills to learn about Australiaand how to study in Australian schools.

    On enrolment, students are assessed and placed into the mostappropriate English course. This placement is reviewed every tenweeks, using the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF)

    ESL Outcomes.

    AttendanceStudents are expected to arrive at school by 8:00am

    Students arriving late to school must sign in at Student Reception.

    Students with written permission from parents to leave the groundsbetween 8:00am and 2:10pm must sign out at Student Reception.

    Book PacksBook Packs for students are available from Student Reception and

    contain the books and stationery needed for school.

    Contact AddressIt is important that the school has a phone number to use if there isan emergency. Please notify the school when you change yourphone number or address.

    Lunch RoomA supervised lunch room is available for all IEU students. Amicrowave is available for students to heat up their lunch.

    Mobile PhonesMobile phones and cameras must be handed in at StudentReception every morning and collected after school.

    Reporting and Parent / Teacher InterviewsProgress Reports are sent home in the middle of each Term.

    Student reports are sent home at the end of each Term.

    Parents are invited to meet with teachers in Term 1 and Term 3.

    Bilingual OfficersThe school has Bilingual Officers who assist parents to communicatewith the school. When you contact the school, please ask to speakto the Bilingual Officer who speaks your language.

    UniformsStudents must wear a Sanderson Middle School shirt. Shirts can bebought from Student Reception using a Government voucher.

    verb tenses are studied in the simple, progressive and perfect forms.There is a focus on recognising and practising grammaticalstructures and sentence patterns using shared personal and culturalexperience. Pre-writing and revision strategies are introduced.

    developing understanding of words used across the middle schoolcurriculum. Students learn to comprehend, recount and provide awritten summary of the main ideas in short texts. Emphasis is onreading with understanding a range of simple texts from personalexperience texts to simple texts from across the curriculum science, history, technology, etc.

    range of simple texts from across the curriculum

    science, history,technology, etc. Students learn to identify the main purpose of atext and some basic organisational features. They learn to identifythe main idea in a paragraph or section of text and identifysequence of events in stories and other texts. Students becomefamiliar with resources within the school library and learn how tolocate and use texts for specific purposes.

    paragraph level. Simple creative and personal texts and informationtexts are written based on modelled language. Writing is enhancedby using appropriate layout, accompanied by visual information,and presented in a variety of forms.

Simple sentences,punctuation and spelling conventions areused and simple, compound and complexsentences written. Sequenced ideas, joinedby appropriate conjunctions are used. Thenarrative can take a number of forms.Writing is re-read and edited to revise andmake the meaning clear.
