Firms with a formalized mission statement have twice the average
return on shareholders’ equity (Rarick and Vitton).
Positive relationship between mission statements and organizational
performance (Bart and Baetz).
30 percent higher return on certain financial measures
(BusinessWeek).
A 20 years of empirical research on mission statements concluded
“there is a small positive relationship between mission statements
and measures of financial organizational performance” (Desmidt,
Prinzie, & Decramer, 2011, p. 468).
Some studies have found that having a mission statement does not
directly contribute positively to financial performance

“Starbucks strives to ethically find and roast the highest
quality Arabica coffee in the world. With stores around the
world, we are the premier roaster and retailer of specialty
coffee globally.” => Tidak menjelaskan ingin jadi apa.
Starbucks “Improved” Vision Statement
Starbucks’ vision is to be the most well-known, specialty
coffee, tea, and pastry restaurant in the world, offering
sincere customer service, a welcoming atmosphere, and
unequaled quality

Enduring statements of purpose that
distinguish one business from other similar
firms.
A mission statement identifies the scope of a
firm’s operations in product and market
terms.

Benefit of written mission statement
1. To make sure all employees/managers understand
the firm’s purpose or reason for being.
2. To provide a basis for prioritization of key internal
and external factors utilized to formulate feasible
strategies.
3. To provide a basis for the allocation of resources.
4. To provide a basis for organizing work, departments,
activities, and segments around a common purpose.
