What is WIPO?

World Intellectual property organization (WIPO).

Specialized United Nations agency for encouragement of creative

activity and to promote the protection of Intellectual property

through out the world.

WIPO's immediate predecessor, the ‘United International Bureaus

for the Protection of Intellectual Property’, best known by its French

acronym – BIRPI (1893).

Currently has 188 member states, administers 26

international treaties and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Current Director General – Mr. Francis Gurry.

Brief History of Establishment of WIPO

1883 – Paris Convention

First major step taken for IP protection.

1886 – Berne Convention

for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.

1891 – Madrid Agreement

first international IP filing service is launched: “The Madrid System for the international registration of marks”.

1893 – BIRPI established

Paris and Berne Conventions secretariats combined.

1967 – The WIPO Convention

Resolution to form WIPO was passed.

1970 – The WIPO came into existence

1978 – PCT system launched

The PCT international patent system

INDIA and WIPO

Joined WIPO in 1975.

The International Conference on ‘The Utilization of the

Traditional Knowledge Digital Library as a Model for

Protection of Traditional Knowledge’, was organized by the

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in

cooperation with the Council of Scientific and Industrial

Research (CSIR), in New Delhi, India, from March 22 to 24,

2011.

Within the BRICS group, after China, India with 1,394 patent applications, is the largest user of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Indian patents have grown by 5.6 percentage over the 2013

PCT figures. 6

To promote the protection of IP rights worldwide and extend the benefits of the international IP system to all member states.

Effort to demystify IPR and make it more accessible and relevant to a broader group of people.

IP no longer to be seen from solely a legal perspective but also its place in the society as a tool for economic growth.

WIPO's nine strategic goals were adopted by member states in December

2008 in the first phase of a comprehensive strategic realignment process

within the Organization.

1. Balanced Evolution of the International Normative Framework for IP.

2. Provision of Premier Global IP Services.

3. Facilitating the Use of IP for Development.

4. Coordination and Development of Global IP Infrastructure.

5. World Reference Source for IP Information and Analysis.

Organizational structure is based on seven sectors.

Each Sector comprises several units, usually called Divisions or

Departments .

Protection for industrial design and brands

responsible for maintaining the International Registry of trademarks

and for the development of the various systems.

2. Culture & Creative Industries Sector

Units:-

Main Activities:

Responsible for developing and delivering diverse communications strategies and content, Managing the WIPO web site, social media.

Providing staffing for the secretariat of the Accessible Books Consortium (ABC).

Support and technical assistance to Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) and national copyright offices around the world.

responsible for the implementation and operation of WIPO's public global

databases, namely PATENTSCOPE, the Global Brand Database and the Global
