In 2017, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland will mark its 170th year of offering performance arts education in Glasgow. We will be marking this significant birthday celebration throughout 2017 with a series of events and performances.

In 1847, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was first established in order “to provide mental cultivation, moral improvement and delightful recreation to all classes.” With the inaugural ‘soiree’ hosted by none other than Charles Dickens, the institution has always attracted the very best educators, innovators and performers.

Over the past 170 years the institution has developed and grown into a world-leading conservatoire. We are at the forefront of performing arts education, ranked 6th in the world*. Thousands of graduates have studied with us and progressed on to influence the arts and the communities they live in.

Some of the special events to commemorate this birthday include our magnificent gala performance of Chess in March (p13), Die Fledermaus in May (p17) and our first symphony concert in partnership with Gleneagles, held at the City Halls in March (p25).

We hope you can join us to celebrate this special year. *QS World Rankings, 2016

Henry IVBy William ShakespeareAdapted from Henry IVParts 1 & 2 by Gordon BarrDirected by Gordon BarrSat 11 Mar / 7.30pmTue 14 Mar / 2.30pm & 7.30pmWed 15 Mar / 11am & 7.30pm

“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown”

Henry IV has won the crown from Richard II but his throne faces rebellion and his health is failing. As the King prepares for war, his son Prince Hal is languishing in brothels and taverns in the company of the notorious Sir John Falstaff. Can young Hal face up to the responsibilities required of an heir to the throne? Will he ever live up to his father’s expectations?

And when the time comes, will he be able to choose between duty and loyalty to an old friend?

Shakespeare’s historical epic moves from tavern to court to battlefield, from hilarious comedy to heartbreaking tragedy and creates a vivid portrait of a nation and a family in turmoil.

A Midsummer Night’s DreamBy William ShakespeareDirected by Hugh HodgartWed 22 Mar / 7.30pmThu 23 Mar / 11am & 7.30pmFri 24 Mar / 2.30pm (CAP) & 7.30pm

“Such tricks hath strong imagination that… in the night, imagining some fear, how easy is a bush supposed a bear?”

Straight from the dark corners of his imagination, but also rooted in both Greek mythology and 16th century English court and country, this most loved of Shakespeare’s plays is both a delightful comedy and a sombre look at some of the darker corners of the human psyche.

A miracle of multi-faceted storytelling, it explores the self in the world and the inner world of the self, exposing the need for empathy, balance and harmony in our relationships with each other and with nature.

A play for our uncertain and unpredictable times if ever there was one.

“Go on then, table, speak. You tell us, you were there, you’ve always been there."

Six generations, twenty-three characters and one very special piece of furniture. Tanya Ronder’s thrilling play is an epic tale of belonging, identity and the things we pass on. Constructed as an intriguing puzzle, we follow the shifting fortunes of the Best family on their travels around the world. A tour de force of assured storytelling encompassing one hundred years of a family and the table that is passed down from generation to generation.

Pleasure and PainAdapted from Guy de Maupassant short stories directed by Mark ThomsonWed 31 May / 7.30pmThu 1 Jun / 7.30pmFri 2 Jun / 7.30pmSat 3 Jun / 2pm & 7.30pm

An evening with French writer Guy de Maupassant, charting his tragic journey from aspiring writer into the darkness of drug addiction and madness. Maupassant’s perfectly crafted short stories explore social and political upheaval, and relationships where men and women spar and dance their way through tales of love, sex, personal tragedy and the need to belong. Playful and funny, unsettling and brutal, Mark Thomson’s adaptation of Maupassant’s stories conjures up a florid and vivid world that reflects Maupassant’s own life and imagination.

Originally produced by Mark Thomson for the Citizens Theatre 14 years ago, we are very pleased to tell Guy de Maupassant’s story again.

“tremendous bonhomie and wit, stirred up with a strongly felt sense of tragedy.”★★★★★ The Guardian (on the original 2002 production)

Two Great French Romantic TragediesDirected by Kally Lloyd-JonesConducted by Professor Timothy DeanSat 4 Mar / 7.15pmMon 6 Mar / 7.15pmWed 8 Mar / 7.15pmFri 10 Mar / 7.15pm

Darius Milhaud Les malheurs d’OrphéeFrank Martin Le Vin Herbe

Apart from Romeo and Juliet, were there ever lovers more destined for tragedy than Orpheus and Eurydice, and Tristan and Isolde? RCS Opera presents two rarely-performed 20th century versions of these stories. Milhaud’s Orphee is punchy, colourful, expressive and vibrant. Frank Martin’s Le vin herbe (‘The drugged wine’) is pure, clean, expressive and concise. Here it receives its Scottish premiere.

Johann Strauss’ “The Bat” is a joyous romp of popular melodies, dances, wit and farcical twists and turns. Based on a late 19th century French vaudeville, it is a popular and well-known opera. However, if you dig a little deeper, you reveal some rather more unsettling themes: marital infidelity, deception, and a society on the brink.

The first half of the concert features a celebration of Scotland’s foremost composer, Sir James MacMillan, as part of the Glasgow-wide MacMillan Festival. As our Visiting Professor, the renowned composer will conduct two

of his own works, including the ravishing The World’s Ransoming, featuring the winner of the first RCS MacMillan Concerto Competition in 2015-16, Clara Lafuente Garcia.

The second half prepares us for the forthcoming change of season, with Britten’s joyous Spring Symphony. Artistic Director of Conducting Garry Walker and the RCS Symphony Orchestra are joined by the RCS Chamber Choir as well as the talented youngsters of our Junior Conservatoire of Music. They are supported by an international lineup of superb alumni including Karen Cargill and Jamie MacDougall.

Transaction feesWe charge a maximum of 50p per transaction. Transaction fees will not apply to cash purchases made at the Box Office. An additional 75p charge is made when tickets are posted.

Group bookingsA group booking discount of 20% is available for groups of ten or more. Please contact the Box Office to make a group booking. Group Booking discounts are not available on Visiting Company performances at RCS.

Conditions of sale1. Once purchased tickets cannot be

refunded, except in the event of a cancelled show.

2. Exchanges may be available for a future show, to a seat of the same value or higher. A £1 fee is charged for exchanges.

3. It may not be possible to admit latecomers, so please aim to arrive at the venue 15 mins prior to the start of the performance.

4. Reservations can be held for three days without payment. Reservations will automatically be released after three days unless payment is received. Tickets reserved less than three days prior to the performance will be automatically released the day before the performance. Reservations cannot be made on the day of a performance.

5. We reserve the right to refuse admission.

6. Please ensure that mobile phones and other devices are switched off during the performance.

7. Filming and photography are not permitted during the performance.

8. Glasses, bottles and hot drinks are not permitted in the auditoriums.
