Thank you for joining us!

8th Grade FAA Welcome! In 8th Grade FAA, your child has 3 FAA courses. Each course lasts a trimester (12 weeks). This allows for a deeper dive into the course for more complex and in depth study. In 8th Grade we are proud to offer seven different elective courses: Computer Tech: 8th Grade: EPIC Impact -Core Objectives: I can define and describe the stages of design thinking. I can apply design thinking to an authentic issue. I can draw conclusions from a virtual interview with an expert. ART -This year in art we will be focusing on creative exploration through photography, drawing, watercolor and sculpture. We will also review Copyright Law and various business-related topics to help guide those who wish to pursue art as a career option in the future. In addition, students may apply to create “Passion Projects” by submitting a portfolio of their artwork. The Passion Projects will allow those who are interested in developing their own creative “voice” to work in-depth on projects of their choosing with teacher approval.

CATD (Formerly FACS) -8th Grade Culinary and Textile Design – Students will be hand sewing a felt coffee cozy and cartoon pillow of their own design. They will also expand their kitchen safety and cooking knowledge by experiencing an assortment of recipes.

Applied Tech is designed to introduce students to the world of Manufacturing and Construction. Technical Illustration concepts and techniques (The Language of Industry) will be expanded upon. Students will be able to draft the types of drawings utilized in a complete set of Production/Working drawings utilized to create an object or structure. 3D Pictorial Drawings: Isometric, Oblique and Perspectives. 2D Multi-view Orthographic Projections. The Alphabet of line type symbols and designations. Dimensioning technique: location and criteria. Shading technique, Scaling and Renderings.

Music -This year in 8th grade music students will continue to create unique compositions using GarageBand using advanced composition techniques. Learn to play a variety of chord progressions and songs using ukuleles .

Drama: We continue to explore how to communicate meaning by: Making short film scenes focusing on the impact camera angles have on communication. Studying Situation Comedy and examining how television is a reflection of society and our values. Students will craft and create their own pilot episode of an original situation comedy.

STEAM - STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathmatics) is a self-driven, problem based curriculum where students explore their passions and interests research ways to better the world. Integration is key as students discover how their knowledge in multiple areas connect. The course culminates with a multi -media project.

Now I’ll share about the Band, Orchestra and Chorus programs here at MSN. Sometimes referred to as BOC. We have a long history of excellent music performing ensembles here. Trophies and plaques from competitions and contests are visible in all of the BOC rooms, and students work hard to achieve excellent ratings when they share their music. While this year will be different in many ways, that excellence is still the goal and the standard for all that the BOC does. Here are some specifics about each ensemble.

Choir- In 7th and 8th grade choir, we will continue developing individual and group singing. We will build upon music literacy skills introduced in previous years in choir. This year we will work on innovative ways to present a performance in a virtual concert.

Band & Orchestra- In 7th and 8th grade band, the objective is a continuation of 6th grade. We seek to read and express music better every day. By building on foundational skills established in previous years, students learn to be more independent musicians, exploring elements of music theory and composition, experiencing stylistic differences, and working on their own understanding and enjoyment of music which is so much a part of all of our surroundings. Reading and expressing music better every day is achieved through large and small group performances and through concentrated individual practice. Along the way, significant relationships are built, students foster connections with one another, and experience the feeling full side of life that is often not touched on in other subjects. Music is unique. Here at MSN, band students seek to read and express its importance every day.
