Weapons of Peace VATICAN CITY- MC) —" Judicious disarming" ;;nd the updating and ob- 1 ervance of treaties are prime "weapons of peace" against mounting symptoms of conflict, Pope Paul VI has declared in his 1976 message for the Day of Peace (Jan. 1). In his message, released here recently, the Pope asserted that "progress is being made by the idea of peace." He put "idea" in italics. "But unfortunately at the same time we see the manifestation of phenomena contrary to the content and purpose of peace." He added: "These phenomena, too, are making progress, even though they are often restricted to a latent state, yet with unmistakable symptoms of incipient or future conflagrations." THE POPE lauded last summer's conference on the peace and security of Europe in Helsinki as "an event which gives reason for hope." In calling "judicious disarming" a prime "weapon of peace," Pope Paul wrote: "Arms and wars are, in a word, to be excluded from civilization's programs." At the same time, he pointed out that it will take time to achieve this state. In the meantime, the is World Day theme message observed, weapons are still needed for legitimate defense. "Military disarmament, if it is not to constitute an unforgiveable error of im- possible optimism...should be common and general," the message said. Claretian Conventdedicated in Delray

DELRAY BEACH-Thenew Claretian convent, ad-jacent to Our Lady Queen ofPeace Church which primarilyserves migrants living west ofhere, was blessed Sunday.

Designed to house acommunity of four Sisters, theconvent was built and fur-nished primarily with ABCDfunds of the Archdiocese ofMiami, plus gifts from CarlKoch, of Fort Lauderdale;Walter Loughran, an areabenefactor, and Mrs. MarionHallman, a Boca Ratonresident who is an Epis-copalian.

Sister Margarita Ramirezand the three Sisters assignedto the Mission, have alreadyoccupied the new structure.Until now, they have resided ina small Boynton Beach houseand commuted the 15-miledistance each day to their workamong the migrants.

In addition to livingquarters for the Religious, thenew convent includes Koch

Hall, which is expected toprovide a badly needed facilityfor parish meetings.

The structure was blessedSunday, by the pastor, FatherJohn B. Handrahan, S.J., asthe official representative ofArchbishop Coleman F. Carroll,following the 11 a.m. Mass.Special honoree at the Masswas the parish's most famousmember, Mrs. Amelia Cortez,85, a parishioner for almost aquarter of a century, who has113 descendants across fivegenerations.

At the Mass, FatherHandrahan thanked Arch-bishop Carroll, all donors tothe ABCD fund, and otherdonors, for their generosity andinterest. He also praised thework of the Sisters who providenumerous services in the fieldsof social welfare; are in chargeof religious doctrine in-struction, and are responsiblefor receiving and distributingthe gifts of clothing and cannedfood items sent to the mission.

'Dona Amelia' honored byher parish and her family

DELRAY BEACH —DonaAmelia was the V.I.P. lastSunday at the blessing of thenew Claretian convent adjacentto Our Lady Queen of Peacechurch, in this rural area.

Her full name is Mrs.Amelia Cortez, and she hasbeen in Palm Beach County for24 of her 85 years; she has 113descendants across fivegenerations—half of them stillin Palm Beach County; she stillspeaks only Spanish, and she isthe beloved matriarch of theCortez family.

NOBODY calls her Mrs.Cortez or even senora. As amark of respect, she is alwaysDona Amelia.

Ninety members of herfamily were seated among theoverflowing congregation in thewell-known missionary churchfor migrants, Sunday, when itspastor, Father John Han-drahan, S.J., presented herwith a plaque and said, "DonaAmelia is better than anysymbol we could have amongPalm Beach County's Spanish'colony' to inspire others."

Dona Amelia is a Mexican-American who was born inHarlingen, Texas, near theMexican border. She was nineyears old before she met herf i r s t E n g l i s h - s p e a k i n gAmerican.

THE FUTURE matriarchof the Cortez family had ninechildren, of which eight arestill alive. When one of herdaughters and son-in-law died,Dona Amelia took under herwing and brought up the fouryoung orphans until all weremarried.

She came to Florida from

Father HandrahanTexas as a memb ;r of a small—mostly family —group ofmigrant farm laborers lookingfor work. Her son, Julian, wasthe crew leader, and the groupfollowed him first to PompanoBeach, later to rural SouthPalm Beach County, near thethen struggling little mission ofOur Lady Queen of Peace. Theywere the first Mexican-Americans to reside in thecounty.

Today, Dona Amelia liveswith a daughter in West PalmBeach, some 20 miles to thenorth, but always comes toSunday Mass at Our LadyQueen of Peace becauseSpanish is spoken there. Herson Julian, the former crewleader, is now a farmer, suc-cessfully operating his ownland on Southern Boulevard inWest Palm Beach.

HER OTHER son,Eduardo, is a graduateengineer, employed by thenationally-known MartinMarietta Corp. at Denver, Colo.He and the Colorado branch ofthe Cortez family flew in for theceremony, to play host withbrother Jul ian and other

members of the family at theactivities. These included abarbecue held to honor DohaAmelia, following the blessingof the convent; presentation ofthe plaque to his mother, atMass; and the reception DonaAmelia held after the service ina room next to the church.

One of her many grand-children, Minnie, a secretary inWest Palm Beach, acted asinterpreter.

As her sons and daughtersstood nearby as senior membersof the family, dozens of

grandchildren and greatgrandchildren came to pay theirrespects to Dona Amelia— anda great, great grandchild wasbrought for her to hold. TheVoice asked through her in-terpreter, what advice she couldgive all her descendants, aftersuch a fruitful life.

Dona Amelia did nothesitate in making her reply.With animation she replied.

"I will tell them to remainfaithful to their C h u r c h -faithful to their religion. I willtell them they must not swingaway if they talk with peoplewho contradict the Church.They must stay with their ownbeliefs—they must keep theFaith."

G r a n d c h i l d M i n n i edisplayed the quilt her grand-mother had sewn for her, whenshe had been born. DonaAmelia sewed quilts for everychild in the family.

The Cortez family whichhad gathered from fours t a t e s — F l o r i d a , T e x a s ,Colorado and Illinois, and frommany of the professions, dif-ferent types of business, orfrom the land—filed into thechurch grounds for the bar-becue held within the shadow ofthe little church oi Our LadyQueen of Peace.

The Pope called for"moral weapons" to maintainpeace, especially the"weapon" of "the observanceof pacts."

'"Pacta sunt servanda'(pacts must be kept) is thestill valid axiom for theconsistency of effectiverelations between states, forthe stability of justice be-tween nations, for the uprightconscience of peoples. Peacemakes this axiom its shield,"the Pope asserted.

New international in-stitutions must make surethat treaties reflect justice,the Pope counseled.

The Pope rejected asunreliable guarantors of peacethe fear of nuclear conflict,"preventive and secretweapons," "resignation to acertain state of endured

oppression, such as colo-nialism, imperialism or revo-lution," and "a capitalist—that is, egoistical"organization of the economicworld.''

REFERRING to thethreats to peace, the Popequestioned: "Can we give thename 'peaceful' to a worldthat is radicially divided byirreconcilable ideologies-ideologies that are powerfullyand fiercely organized, thatdivide peoples from oneanother, and, when they areallowed free rein, subdividethose peoples within them-selves, into factions andparties that find their reasonfor existence and activity inpoisoning their ranks withirreconcilable hatred andsystematic struggle within thevery fabric of society itself?

"The apparent normalityof such situations does notconceal the tension of acorresponding iron hand,ready to crush the adversaryas soon as he should betray asign of fatal weakness."

The Pope asserted:"Peace is a work of continualtherapy. Its health is by itsvery nature frail."

IN A PRESS conferenceat which the message wasreleased. Bishop RamonTorrella Cascante, vicepresident of the PontificalJustice and Peace Com-mission, said that the WorldDay of Peace was establishedby Pope Paul VI as "a per-sonal initiative."

He then spoke of Catholicsblocked from coming to Romefor Holy Year by the

"hostility—sometimes absoluteand at other times less directbut no less effective," ofgovernments.

These people, he said, are"vividly and sadly present."

"ONLY PEOPLE who donot know with what feeling weparticipate in their trials andwith what spirit we exertourselves to go to their aid...canatribute our careful andprudent silence...to forgetting,or worse, to a lack of care orindifference," he said.

Vatican diplomatic efforts,the Pope said, are gearedtoward assuring the Church'srights. "If in some cases, theresults appear to be slim, in-

sufficient or late in coming, weconsider it our grave duty toproceed with enlightenedpersistence."

The Pope was replying tocriticism, especially strong inRome, that he does not take ahard enough line with com-munists and that hisnegotiations with EasternEuropean governments haveproduced too little.

THE POPE said that lastsummer's Helsinki conferenceon European security wouldhelp the situation if nationsrespected their pledge to allowfreedom of conscience.

The Pope said that theVatican had tried to start talks

with Vietnam, implying thatthe Vietnamese had notresponded. He singled outCzechoslovakia, Rumania, andthe Soviet Union as placeswhere freedom of conscience isnot respected.

The Pope praised thedecolonization of Africa andexpressed the hope that thedevelopment process in Africawould continue "undisturbed inparticular by foreign in-terference which is trying tosubstitute new forms ofdomination through power orideological influence for the oldcolonization."

HE THEN called for peacein Angola.

For Lebanon he repeatedhis calls that a "traditionof...good collaboration" bespared destruction.

ECUMENISM, the Popemaintained, is proceeding"calmly and without in-terruption, without dramaticgestures, but with steps whichare perhaps more constructiveand to the point."

He lashed out against a"willful, categorical, unworthyand cold rejection of themission of the Church" by the"manipulators of public opinionthrough the media, by men ofscience and education and art."

Voice Staff Writer"No, I had never thought

•..as could ever happen to me.But I hold no bitterness orresentment," Fifo Lliraldi saysas he slowly removes the plasticcover on the electronic mixer infront of him.

He speaks softly, leavinglong pauses between sentences.It would almost seem as if helistens to his own silence in aneffort, perhaps, to avoid theconversation about himself.Since 1968, his has been a worldof total darkness.

"I have never paid toomuch attention to my ownphysical adjustment," he says," philosophy has never been mybag.

"I HAVE always tried tolook reality in the face... now Ijust take things simply as theycome."

He has now finished themeticulous folding of the"mixer" cover, but refuses anyhelp in putting it away and hesays courteously, "I'd ratherknow where I put thingsmyself, so I may find themlater."

His room is quite smalland poorly lit—it really makesno difference to him. There areno windows and it's soundproof. All around the wall lay anumber of musical instruments.

THE SON of a Cubanheart surgeon, Fifo was born inCuba 30 years ago. A diabeticsince he was two, at age 15 hecame to the United States withhis older brother, and they livedon their own for almost twoyears, until the arrival of theirparents.

New York, Puerto Ricoand Miami were where Fifogrew into a young man full ofhope and expectations for thefuture. He was in his secondyear of college and looking intoEngineering as a career, whenhe lost his sight. Plans aboutgett ing married were alsoabandoned and he started awhole reorientation of his lifethrough music.

What he is now, is aproduct of his own training andperseverance. Many thought he

small recording studio in hisroom, and by himself, heoperates the "mixer" with itsover 100 switches. He makeshis own recordings which in-clude, sometimes, four to fiveinstruments.

lifted me up," an acquaintancesays.

"He always strikes mewith his quiet opt imism,"Prudencio Nodarte commented.

Having known Fifo as ayoung boy, before blindnessstruck him, Nodarte still recallshim when he was a high schoolstudent in Cuba.

"He was always a quietboy, but had a big followingand influence among hisclassmates. It 's the same now,"he adds, "his house is alwaysfull of young men who come topractice with him and stay untillate hours at night," Nodarteexplains.

Fifo is now part of anorchestra, a professional groupof rock musicians called "TheSevilla Biltmore." They play

mainly at private house parties,and Fifo is the bass- guitarist.But he can also play organ,drums, and Spanish guitar. Thegroup has already some recordsin the market.

AT HOME, Fifo doesmusical arrangements forprofessional singers, and healso dedicates many hours tocreating music and , soundeffects for the plays presentedby some of the Catholic youthgroups in several Miamiparishes.

He works in collaborationwith Prudencio Nodarte whohas written some of these. Now,together and with the backingof Monsignor Agustin Roman,they are preparing a series ofradio programs on Catholichistorical figures from the

different Cuban provinces.These will be aired on Spanishradio stations as public servicetime, connected with the Shrineof Our Lady of Charity.

"They are supposed to beinspirational and educational,and Fifo will do all the record-ing," Nodarte explained.

ON SUNDAYS, Fifo playsthe organ at the noon Mass atSt. Hugh Parish. He doesn'tconsider himself a good singer,but he has managed to lead asmall choir that sings at theSpanish Mass.

Fifo leads a very normallife, and he always has friendsto drive him around. Those whoknow him always describe himas "a most pleasant company.

Asked about his plans forthe new year Fifo pauses awhile before answering. His realconcern is living the present, hesays and he adds: "I like music,I always did, although I neverthought I'd make a career of it.

I would like to open a smallrecording business. Somethingsimilar to what I have at home,but on a commercial set up."

Until his dream comestrue, Fifo continues happy withhis music and his service. Heknows tha t happiness issomething to be conquered dayby day, something, that in spiteof difficulties, can be carriedwithin and shared with others.

At least that's what isperceived after spendingsometime in his company.

1975 Shows we need the RockNine teen-Seventy-f ive. It was the best of

times; it was the worst of times in America.Science and the arts flourished, and in

spite of economic recession Americans ingeneral had one of the highest standards ofliving in history. Spiritually it was the HolyYear and there were signs of a newawareness of the need for renewal and thehealing powers of reconciliation.

Yet, many of the worst of times whichhave plagued mankind throughout all hishistory were reflected on several fronts thisyear. Wars and terrorism, displaced per-sons, hunger, killing of the unborn, religiousuncertainty were everywhere.

Much of the best and the worst weredepicted in the year's headlines of themajor news stories as cited by the nation'sCatholic editors.

The canonization of Mother Seton setfor Americans a new ideal, an inspiration ata time when Americans are groping formodels of behavior to immitate when theonly models left are corrupt governmentleaders, greedy athletic stars, immoralentertainers, divisive parents, profit-onlybusiness leaders, some feminists whoexhalt business careers above motherhoodand television and movie heros who place

violence and sex above justice and love.The Quinlan case raised the issue of life

and death itself, and while Karen Ann'sparents have suffered greatly, they cantake consolation in the fact that theirdaughter's condition has illuminated thewhole problem for millions of averagepeople and has brought the Church'scompassionate and enlightened opinion be-fore the entire nation. Karen's life—anddeath—will have meant a lot. Hopefully,when the case is resolved it will also chart anew course for the nation in its handling ofthe ill and dying.

Resettlement of the Vietnameserefugees was by no means universallyaccepted by Americans, but the factremains, they were brought in by thethousands, given temporary quarters andthen absorbed into the communities, withCatholic agencies and sponsoring parishesplaying a leading role. The country still hasits share of Good Samaritans.

The issue of women's ordination, whileapparently answered in the negative in theCatholic Church for now, had the positiveeffect of bringing forth the need for greaterunderstanding of the dignity of women and

increased use of their skills.The struggle over abortion continued

with the U.S. Senate turning away fromaction on a prolife amendment. But theBishops responded by setting up a pastoralplan of prolife activities as evidence thatthey are not giving up just because the trendof the day is against them.

And the names of Lebanon, Ireland,Portugal, Cambodia, Israel, Palestine, stillconjure up visions of guns, men running instreets, refugees, ruined buildings andhatred.

And it is all the clearer as this yearends, that the solution to mankind'sproblems is not in science or politics or"new morality" or a balance of bombs.

It is for each human being to seehimself as a small but dignified part of agreat family of mankind, existing under oneCreator for the purpose of loving oneanother.

And in the midst of today's chaos andconfusion about how to live and what tobelieve in, never before was it so importantthat there be a rock standing fast in theswirling waters for those who are wiseenough or lucky enough to climb on to.

Church is becoming 'Mother' again

Time was —and not light-years ago —when all of us feltmerit and wisdom in the factthat the Church treated us aslittle children. In those days,we were not thinking of theChurch as the People of Godso much as the community ofbelievers supported andguided by the Holy Spirit.

We knew the Church washuman since we were mem-bers, and we had faults andweaknesses that scandalizednon-Catholics and helped pavethe way for some atheists toembrace their chilling belief.We didn't like that, but it wastrue.

However, it was morethan made up for, wereasoned, because the Churchwas also divine. Christfounded it, promised nothingwould destroy it, and, on thepositive and consoling side,assured us He and His Spirit,would be with us always. Wemight fail the Church, but Hewould not fail us. Most of us,it seems likely, believed ratherfirmly in that.

THEREFORE, "Moth-er" Church was not aterm to be ashamed of or torebel against. But times dochange. In the freedom ex-plosion of the sixties, somefound that title, Mother,demeaning, maternalistic inthe bad sense, symbolic of"momism" in our socials t ructure. We are free,mature, responsible, creative,community-minded. We don'tneed to be tied to the Church's

apron string. We don't need alife threaded with legalism,because we are a decision-making people. We don't needscaffolding, such as structureswould give a child in order toclimb. And so on.

Well, that's interestingnow, but also rather sad, whenwe see that some of those who,like Thomas Paine, were" reason ing" out theirfreedom, as Paine did so well,also reasoned themselves outof the church or into a state oftotal confusion.

Why these thoughts rightnow? A new year is comingup. I don't know why it putssome people in a pensive,reflective mood, but it does.Anyhow it's good for a family,including the family of theChurch, to regroup andreestablish relationships. Agreat many who went throughthe faith-crisis of the sixtiesand the early seventies are nolonger embarassed to think ofthe Church as serving in amaternal role. Christ's wordsstill make good sense:"Unless you become as littlechildren, you will not enter thekingdom of heaven."

THE CHURCH, viewednow as God's instrument, stilldeals with Pope and child,octogenarian and simple firstcommunicant, as if all werechildren on pilgrimage to theFather.

And if there is anythingat the beginning of the newyear which needs to bereviewed and reflected uponwith all seriousness, it is theChurch telling us, as if we

were little children who needto learn a lesson over and overagain, that we were notcreated for these few years onearth. There is much more toour destiny. And how we livenow will shape that destiny.

Truth is if you notice theliturgy after Christmas youcan see the Church is gettinganxious about her children.The great celebration of thebirth of the Christ-Child isover. But the very next daywe are brought to attention bythe martyrdom, of Stephen —the follower of Christ whofinds this life of no value whenhe can go to the Father in theother world of God.

Stephen reminds us thereis a tomorrow — an endlessone. A tomorrow withouthatred and fear and prejudiceand uncertainty. A tomorrowwith our Father , a daywithout end of rejoicing thatwe are safe, we are saved, weneed no longer worry. Thegoal has been reached; thevictory won: true successachieved.

SO IN THESE post-Nativity days, the Churchsounds like a concernedMother. It 's as if she isgathering her family aroundher with a firm arm andsaying: "Don't lose sight ofthe purpose of all this. Don'tforget the most important linein the Christmas Scriptures:There is born to you aSaviour.

"So...think of salvationoften...live with the thought ofsalvation. Take it to workwith you. Let its reality in-

fluence your home life. Let itshape your views and at-titudes among friends andstrangers...

"Make salvation yourfirst and last concern. Putaway the toys now and settledown, as a man does with aserious problem which affects

his future..."Who is so big—in this

illusory world of Nietzsche'ssupermen — that he cannotstand to hear again fromMother Church exactly whyhe is spending the briefest ofmoments on this tiny planetearth?

livery year editors gothrough a ritual of choosingthe ten most important storiesof the year. NC News Serviceasks this of Catholicnewspapermen each year.Often I just ignore requests—an editor friend of mine says itis an exercise in futility—butthis year I chose the tenstories I thought mostsignificant to the CatholicPress in the United States.Here they are:

(1) The question of lifeand death. This includes thedrive for euthanasia, theKaren Quinlan case, the rightto die without intervention ofextraordinary measures. It isimportant because there reallyis a campaign to define worth-while life by whether it has aparticular necessary quality.Just as abortion was only apreliminary step in a battleagainst the importance of allhuman life so euthanasia isjust another step in adeveloping plan to diminishthe importance of life.Eventually the lives of thementally and physicallyhandicapped, the chronicallyor terminally ill andultimately the lives of theaged are threatened by this

movement. We began arecognition of this danger in1975 and that was an im-portant event.

(2) Recognition of theneed for development of therole of women in the Church.The campaign for the or-dination of women is anabberation in what is a validcall for the development of therole of women in the Church.If the vocal effort to get or-dination of women isshallowly conceived, wecannot avoid the truth thatwomen have not been utilizedin the Church according totheir ta lents and theirdedication. This was the yearthat emphasized the necessityfor bringing women into rolesof leadership and decision-making in the Church.

(3) The HartfordStatement. A group ofProtes tant and Catholictheologians met in Hartford,Connecticut, and issued adecisive statement. They weretheologians known as liberalsand they questioned thedirection of liberal churchmen.It was the first challenge to asocial gospel that haddeveloped to a place where theGospel was being forgotten. Ithad a significant impactthroughout Christianity andin the Catholic Church.

(4) The Pro-Lifemovement. If Senator BirchBayh's senate committeerefused to bring out any of theversions of pro-life con-stitutional amendments, itwas still a year in which themovement against legalizedabortion strengthened itself.There was a new solidarity.There was significant par-ticipation by Protestants andthose of other religious faiths.Finally, there was a plan forcitizen action organized by theU.S. Bishops. The Pro-Lifemovement will play asignificant role in the 1976national elections.

(5) Canonization ofMother Seton. Thecanonization of the firstAmerican-born saint was ofhistorical importance. MotherSeton is a model for not onlywomen but for all the laity.Her life was one of action. Bythe strength of her owndedication, she did what shethought should be done. Itwas a historically importantevent.

(6) Growth of Church-state conflict in LatinAmerica. Where once in LatinAmerica the Church wassupportive of the status quo,the Church today is solidlyplaced in opposition to un-democratic governments and

on the side of the poor anddisenfranchised. This makesconflict inevitable. Thesituation is confused to someextent by the fact that thereare Marxists among theclergy, but the real fact aboutthe Church's position is that itis democratic and in supportof the people. The conflictbetween the Church and thestate in almost all LatinAmerican countries is certainto come.

(7) Unrest on the Iberianpeninsula. Portugal and Spainare in situations of unrest. TheChurch in both countries is inthe very center of the comingconflict. In Spain particularlybut in both countries, theChurch will support the rightsof the people, especially thepoor and working people. Therise of communism is possiblein both countries and theChurch must of necessityoppose it. It is a criticalsituation that becomes a realtest for the Church in thosecountries.

(8) World hunger. Whatis especially significant aboutthis is the way the Catholicpeople have joined to meetthis need, not only in theUnited States but in manycountries.

(9) Resettlement ofVietnamese refugees. Again

this is a significant news eventbecause of the response of thepeople. In less than a year,hundreds of thousands ofhomeless refugees were givenhomes. As in the case of worldhunger, the Catholic peopleresponded well.

(10) The situation inItaly. There is a very realpossibility that the Com-munists may come to powerby election in Italy, that theymay control Rome. At thesame time, there is a growingcampaign for legalization ofabortion and a growth ofpornography. This challengesthe Pope. As a necessity, theVatican has become in-creasingly anti-communist,more so than at any time sinceimmediately after World WarII. The potential danger ofRed rule surrounding theVatican is a matter of criticalimportance for all of theChurch.

Those are the ten eventsthat seemed to me mostimportant in 1975. I con-sidered adding the conflictinvolving Catholic collegesand universities and theVatican's insistence theymust be Catholic —but thenthat is just a developing issuethat will probably be one ofthe - most important newsevents of 1976.

Editors pick top 10 stories-Mother SetonandQuinlan suit,1st, 2nd

WASHINGTON -(NC) —The canonization of St.Elizabeth Ann Seton, Sept.14, was the religious newsstory of the year in the UnitedStates, according to Catholicnewspaper editors polled byNC News Service.

In second place, saidmost editors, was the right todie issue raised by Karen AnnQuinlan's parents in theirunsuccessful court fight toend extraordinary medicalprocedures being used topreserve Miss Quinlan's life.The case drew worldwideattention to the Catholicposition that no one isobligated to use extraordinarymeans to preserve life, coupledwith moral and legal dilemmasposed by modern medicaltechnology.

All 25 editors whoresponded to the wire servicepoll ranked Mother Seton'scanonization among the top 10stories in 1975. She received10 first-place votes, foursecond-place votes, and a totalof 203 points on a scale of 10

points per first-place votedown to one point for a 10th-place vote. Only one editor didnot rank the canonizationamong the top five stories.

Five Catholic editorsconsidered the Quinlan casethe top story, and anotherseven thought it was theyear's second major story.Vote points on the ten-to-onescale totalled 185.

Other stories that editorsranked in the top 10, withpoint totals, were:

• Third, the resettlementof the Vietnamese refugeeswho fled to this country afterthe fall of South Vietnam inApril (163 points, with threefirst-place votes).

• Fourth, the issue of theordination of women in theCatholic and Episcopalchurches (137 points, fourfirst-place votes).

• Fifth, the continuingbattle against abortion, in-cluding the defeat in a Senatesubcommittee of anti-abortion

amendments to the Con-stitution and the establish-ment of a pastoral plan forpro-life activities by the U.S.bishops (116 points, one votefor first place).

• Sixth, the continuingissue of food shortages andhunger around the world (100points, one vote for firstplace).

• Seventh, the 1975 HolyYear of Reconciliation (82points).

• Eighth, the growingpastoral and canonical con-cern for Catholics who aredivorced and remarried (61points).

• Tied for ninth andtenth place, with 48 pointseach, the initial stages of U.S.bishops' program to observethe nation's bicentennial witha new drive for social justice,and the passage of a new farmlabor law in California thatgave farmworkers the right tosecret-ballot elections forunion representation.

Only one other newsstory came close to the top 10in the voting: the Catholiccharismatic movement, with

The top four stories thisyear— Mother Seton 'scanonization, the right to lifeissue, the Vietnamese refugeesand the ordination ofwomen — had not been in thenews in 1974 or were notconsidered at the top of thenews yet. The food crisis,coupled with populationconcerns, was rated the topstory in the 1974 NC Newspoll, but it dropped to sixthplace this year. Anti-abortionactivities, which editors ratednumber one in 1973 andnumber two in 1974, droppedto number five this year.

THE HINDENBURGVisual effects spectacular

in a mediocre presentationThe most recent of the

disaster films, The Hindenburgis based upon the ill-fated lastvoyage of the famous GermanZeppelin, which ended in aspectacular and terrible infernoat the naval stat ion atLakehurst, New Jersey, in Mayof 1937. The investigations thatfollowed never uncovered thecause of the disaster. Onetheory was sabotage, and themovie takes this as its point ofdeparture for a fictional re-creation .

George C. Scott plays aGerman intelligence officerassigned to the Hindenburg assecurity officer, and his an-tagonist (William Atherton) isa young crewman, an activeanti-Nazi who is determined todestroy the giant zeppelin withher garish swastika emblem inorder to prove to the world thatthere is opposition to Hitlerwithin Germany.

THE MOVIE has muchgoing for it. Its real star is a 25-foot scale model of the airship.(A circumstance tha t im-mediately recalls the 30-footstar of Jaws, and anyone whowishes to speculate as to whatthis tells us about the role ofintelligence in present-dayAmerican films is free to do so.)

Furthermore, howeverdebased Academy Awards maybe as testimony toachievement, Albert Whitlocksurely deserves one for hisawesome and impressive visualeffects. Such sights as that ofthe giant zeppelin lifting offfrom Frankfurt at night,cruising over the iceberg-filledocean beneath, and aboveManhattan are breath-taking.It is probably no coincidence,therefore, that the most im-pressive acting is done by thosecast members whose roles areclosely allied with the zeppelinherself and remote from theplot: Charles Durning, as thecaptain, who despite thedwarfed human scale of thedrama, manages to conveysomething of the hubris ofGreek tragedy; Richard A.Dysart as the Hindenburg'sformer captain; and the otheractors who play the rest of thecrew. As long as DirectorRobert Wise keeps his cameraon the airship herself or on theofficers and crew, he holds ourinterest consistently.

Once he strays back intothe Grand Hotel atmosphere ofthe passenger 's quar ters ,however, or becomes involvedwith the unconvincing plot, hecomes to grief, this despite thepresence of Scott and Bancroft,two of the greatest naturalresources that Hollywood hasin its clutches. There is anattempt to create a bit ofsuspense as to whom thepotential saboteur might be,

but this has to be abandonedquite early because of plotconsiderations, which makes allthe energy expended on it afoolish waste.

ONCE THE suspenseangle is junked, the passengershave absolutely nothing to dobut engage in small talk untilthe climax when they either getaway or do not. Miss Bancroft,even though she is given nextto nothing to do, comes veryclose to triumphing over thebanality of her role as an anti-Nazi countess and the inanityof her dialog, but thisremarkable lady's moral vic-

tory does not help the viewermuch. Scott has much more todo, but most of it so downrightpointless that it is more ofa handicap than an advant-age. William Atherton doesmoderately well in thethankless role of the saboteur,and his failure to win theaudience's sympathy isprobably more due as much tothe absurdity of his position asto his grim manner. (With hiscold fanatical anti-Nazi zeal, hein fact evokes the image of theNazi spy in World War ITmovies, an unfortunateassociaton. (A-II)

Prophets duringBabylonian exile

God responds to theneeds of His people. In thedays of the kingdoms of Israeland Judah when prosperityand political expediencycaused the Israeli tes toabandon their covenantpromises to Yahweh, He sentthem prophets to exhort themto faithfulness, to warn themof the consequences theirapathy toward the covenantcould bring upon them.

When Jerusalem fell tothe might of Nebuchadnezzarand most of the citizens ofJudah were exiled to Babylon,the dangers facing theremnant of God's people wereentirely different from thosethey had faced as an in-dependent nation.

JERUSALEM, God'sHoly City, had beenconquered and destroyed. TheTemple had been leveled andthe Ark of the Covenantdestroyed or hidden never tobe found. Those who hadinterpreted their "chosen-ness" to mean national in-vincibility had their dreamshattered by reality.

Exiles who survived thefall of Jerusalem and the 600-mile death march to Babylonwere grief stricken and con-fused. The Land, promisedthem by Yahweh, had beenwrenched from them. The citywhere His name was to dwellforever was in ruins. It was asif the Word of Yahweh hadbeen blotted out by paganvictories.

With their religious rootsbrutally yanked from thesacred soil of Israel they werefaced with the same despairthat had caused their brothers

from the Northern Kingdomto disappear completely whenexiled to Assyria a centuryand a half earlier.

The feelings of desolationare expressed in Psalm 137."By the streams of Babylonwe sat and wept when weremembered Zion..."

But God responded to thenew need of his people andraised up among them greatprophets to speak to them ofYahweh's love for them andexhort them to hope in Hispromise that a Holy Remnantwould return to the land.

The two great prophets ofthe Exile were Ezekiel and hewho is known to us only asSecond Isaiah.

Ezekiel was among thosetaken hostage and deportedto Babylon in 597 byNebuchadnezzar. He receivedhis prophetic call in 592 (Ezk1-3) and spoke the Word ofGod among his fellow Exilesuntil 570.

His first prophecies pre-date the fall of Jerusalem andlike Jeremiah's warn thepeople of the coming disaster.Many of his prophecies weredramatically acted out by theprophet who most scholarswould agree was the mosteccentric of a breed of unusualmen.

He acts out the fall ofJerusalem by digging a hole inthe wall of his house throughwhich he escapes and fleesinto the darkness (12:lff). Allthis while his fellow hostageslook on. Another suchcomination prophecy is his"Song of the Sword"(21:13ff).

the dry bones (37:Iff) and theNew Temple (40-42) are God'sconsolation of His people andHis assurance that He ispresent among them even inexile, and that they will indeedbe restored as a people to theLand of the Promise.

His allegory of the twosisters (23) reminds theIsraelites of their history ofinfidelity to Yahweh and thehardness of heart tha tresulted in their conquest andfall.

After the fall of Je-rusalem (587) Ezekiel 'sprophecies change to mes-sages of hope. In his Par-

The promise of acleansing of His people andthe gift of new hearts, of flesh,not stone (36:24-28) speaks ofthe gift of God's Spirit toenable men to live by God'sstatutes.

Second Isaiah (Is 40-55)is raised up among the exilestoward the end of theircaptivity and is charged withthe message of hope andconsolation. Indeed his firstoracle prophesies an end to theexile. "Comfort, give comfortto my people, says your God.Speak tenderly, to Jerusalem,and proclaim to her that herservice is at an end, her guiltis expiated...A voice cries out:In the desert prepare the wayof the Lord!" (Is 40:1-3).

He contrasts the power ofYahweh to the lifeless idols ofBabylon (40:12-31). Cyrus,the conquerer of Babylon, ispictured as the chosen in-strument of God to free Hispeople (45:24ff) and the fall ofBabylon as God's punishmentthe Babylonian's treatment of

Israel (45:1-7).Yahweh's forgiveness

and restoration of Israel ismovingly described in SecondIsaiah's canticle on "The NewZion" (54), where the barrenand rejected wife (Israel) istaken back by God to be themother of the New Israel.

It is in Second Isaiah thatwe find the beautiful andmysterious Servant Songs(42:1-4, 49:1-6, 50:4-11 and52:13ff) that portray the idealservant of God, unselfish, self-sacrificing and respondingperfectly to the covenant callof Yahweh. Jesus clearlyidentified himself as thisServant, the Man of Sorrows.

SECOND ISAIAH, likehis predecessor whose namehe bears emphasizes -theholiness of God and par-ticularly the power of HisWord (55:10) that is able torecreate and renew (43:19ff).

God responds to theneeds of His people as part ofHis hesed, his covenant love.Through Ezekiel and SecondIsaiah he responds to abroken, dejected and de-spairing people with con-solation and hope based uponHis promise of restoration.

Singleminded commitment to any greatlove is a rare human achievement. To knowone's way to personal fulfillment and to followthat way without deviation seems to be toohard an assignment for the ordinary man orwoman. Waywardness of some kind seems tobe built right into the human heart.

EVEN MARITAL LOVE which is twopeople's commitment to an enduring com-placence in each other rarely escapes period'sof disillusionment. Husband and wife cannormally mature together only a series ofdisappointments and rediscoveries. And beforeeach rediscovery, there is a strong likelihoodthat one or the other may have a painful feelingof having lost his or her way. "I don't knowwhere we are going" is a very understandablecomplaint at times, even in the best of loves.

The prophet Ezechiel uttered propheciesof doom and prophecies of restoration. For me,one of the most beautiful is in the form of anallegory about a marriage. In it, God speaks toJerusalem and its people, with all the grief,indignation, poignancy, and ultimateforgiveness of a hurt lover. He is a husbandwho has been betrayed by a fickle and wantonwife. And like any hurt lover, He seems unableto retrain from chastising the beloved byreminding her of all the things He has done forher.

In vivid and earthy language, theprophet's voice tells of the Lord's discovery ofHis beloved as an abandoned child, un-washed, uncared for, doomed to die. He madeher live and watched her grow into youngmaidenhood but found her still naked anduntamed.

Then the Lord says tenderly, "Again Ipassed by you and saw that you were now oldenough for love. So I spread the corner of mycloak over you to cover your nakedness; Iswore an oath to you and entered into acovenant with you. You became mine."(Ezechiel 16:8)

LOVING solicitude was heaped upon theLord's bride. All this solicitude is drummedinto her consciousness with an overtone of hurtfeelings until the Lord's words to her culminate

in a rebuke for ruined beauty."You were renowed among the nations for

your beauty, perfect as it was because of mysplendor which I had bestowed on you. Butyou were captivated by your own beauty. Youused your renown to make yourself a harlotand you lavished your harlotry on everypasserby whose own you became." (Ezechiel16:15)

There is a timelessness to this rebuke toJerusalem and its people. It is the story ofmankind's response to God in every age. TheLord enriches us and beautifies us by theoutpouring of gratuitous love. And we forgetwho we are, where we came from, and where weare going. Waywardness is an old story. Andwe throw ourselves away whenever we leavethe way where love is calling us to follow Him.

It would be calamitous if Ezechiel'sallegory stopped here. Even in the romance ofGod and the human race, there is rediscoveryafter disillusionment.

The hurt Lord says "Yet I will rememberthe covenant I made with you when you were agirl, and I will set up an everlasting covenantwith you, that you may remember and becovered with confusion, and that you may beutterly silenced for shame when I pardon youall you have done." (Ezechiel 16:60)

Saint Augustine has a somewhat shockingremark about our Lord's love for the Church.He says, "He found her a harlot and made hera virgin."

" VIRGINITY is identified withsinglemindedness. Achieving singlemindedlove of the Lord is the vocation of the wholeredeemed people of God. Christ, theBridegroom, is ultimately the adorable centerof all that undeviating complacence whichhuman hearts are capable of when lookingupon the beloved.

While waiting to achieve this enviablefidelity amidst all the indecision, restlessness,and incongruity of our human bungling, wemust accept ourselves as we are. We mustlearn to accept the struggle between our call tototal commitment and our flirtations withwaywardness. The virgin and the harlot live inthe same house. They live in your heart andmine.

M.CHAMPLINA recent news item out of

Los Angeles reported theproposed establishment inthat area of four centers forthe study of Gregorian chant.The founder, Msgr. Robert E.Brennan, believes there is "agrowing movement to bringback Latin and Gregorianchant as a normal part ofliturgical prayer."

I concur in his ob-servation about the trendtoward restoration of chantand Latin in our liturgies, butwith some qualification. Myexperiences indicate thereturn of these musicalelements is only a partialreintroduction and thosemelodies tend in a givencelebration to be combinedwith other contemporaryvernacular songs.

TWO illustrations shouldclarify the point.

St. Charles BorromeoSeminary at Overbrook inPhiladelphia possesses thereputation among peer in-stitutions as a conservative,old style, formidable Eastern

school for future priests. Themassive buildings and vastcampus, the s tudents incassock (and surplice forMass), the seminarians' verydeferential attitude towardvisiting priests, the ancientpaintings in every hallwaytend to confirm this im-pression.

However, after directinga three-day retreat for thetheological s tudents atOverbrook, I found the labelinaccurate. These young menare not ashamed of the past orof the Philadelphia tradition,but they seem very open tothe Church's needs for today 'and tomorrow.

The liturgies for thatopening retreat reflected thispride of the past, but in tunewith the present attitude.

We worshiped from thePrayer of Christ ians,celebrated a communalPenance service and con-cluded on Friday withbenediction of the BlessedSacrament.

The music included"Deus in adjutorium intende"(a famous Gregorian chant

introduction to the divineoffice) and the Bossa Nova"Holy, holy, holy ." Wechanted the Agnus Dei (ModeVIII) and joined in songs byDeiss and the Dameans. Wesang "Down in adorationfalling" (a vernacularizedLatin benediction hymn) andlistened to a melody by themonks of Weston Priory.

Something old, some-thing new indeed.

The priests of ourSyracuse diocese gatheredthis September at a localmotel for their second "livein" clergy workshop. Despitethe presence of two excellentlecturers, feedback stressedthat the highlight of theconference was not the goodacademic presentations, butthe daily eucharistic liturgies.

Carefully planned tofeature a variety of optionsprovided by the revisedliturgical tex ts , the twoMasses contained musically,as in Philadelphia, somethingold and something new.

We changed a familiarKyrie Eleison to begin oneEucharist and concluded that

service with the popular "Letthere be peace on earth."Contemporary composerCarey Landry's "I'll NeverForget You" was a Com-munion meditation piece forMass and the Salve Regina inGregorian chant endedCompline or Night Prayer.The priests united both inLucien Deiss' antiphonal"Hosanna, hosanna, hosannain the highest" and an AgnusDei, again in plain chant.They also listened to a vocalsolo with strong Charismaticovertones and a violin ren-dition of "Jesu, Joy of Man'sDesiring."

This is the type of old andnew liturgies I see developingacross the nation. It rep-resents a restoration ofGregorian chant, true but amodified reintroduction.

Msgr. Brennan's centersmay stir more than localinterest. In too manyseminaries the Church's richmusical tradition has all butbeen abandoned for con-temporary compositions.Future priests certainly needan awareness of today's best

in music, but they also shouldacquire an appreciation foryesterday's finest works.

Into this eden of wisdomcrept the ancient snare, to usewisdom for self-servingpurposes and not as astairway to the stars. Solomonfound out that kingdoms costmoney. In the beginning theforeign trade helped pay thebills. Soon, however, Solomonrealized what all kings andpoliticians come to know, thathe must levy taxes, and heavyones at that, to sustain thenew style of governmentliving.

WORSE YET, heresorted to what amounted toslave labor. He forced thefiercely free-spirited nomadsof the northern tr ibes,especially Israel, into con-tributed services. This wasbasically forced labor camps,

The number is doubtlessan exaggeration, but thecorrupting result was not. Hismarriages to foreign wives ledto a support for their strangereligions.

"When Solomon was oldhis wives had turned his heartto strange gods. By adoringAstarte, the goddess of theSidonians and Milcom, theidol of the Ammonites,Solomon did evil in the sightof the Lord. He built a highplace (i.e. shrine) to Chemosh,the idol of Moab and toMolech, the idol of the Am-monites." (I Kings 11:4-9)

THE BIBLE does nothide this seamy side of the sunking. Clearly he was too fondof ostentation and the displayof wealth. His enormousharem witnesses both to hismonumental lust for selfindulgence as well as a senilepampering of his wives;idolatrous pieties. Hisautocratic spirit which servedhim well jp establishing asound administration for hiskingdom turned sour when hebecame churlishly insensitiveto the demands of humandignity and the griefs causedby unbearable taxation.

Thus idolatry, unfairtaxation and a humilatingslave policy marked the finaldays of Solomon. The glory ofSolomon, which could havebeen that of the integratedgenius of a religious leaderand a political monarch,turned merely into theflatulent wheezings of atypical oriental despot,

surrounded as all such peoplehave ever been, by a corps ofsychophants.

Other troubles plaguedhis final years. The Egyptianpharaoh hired Hadad, theprince of Edom, to conductborder raids againstSolomon's kingdom. Thedesert chieftan, Rezon,created an independent nationat Damascus, which even-tually became a seriousmilitary threat to the northernterritories.

Appalled by the slavepolicies, a group of prophetspersuaded Jeroboam toinitiate a rebellion againstSolomon. The attempt failedand Jeroboam was exiled toEgypt. But the spirit of armedrebellion was sown and wouldmature at the king's death.

Speaking of his death, theBible simply notes: "Solomonrested with his ancestors. Hewas buried in his father's Cityof David, and his sonRehoboam succeeded him asking." (I Kings 11:49)

HE WHO could have lefta legacy of peace and hope anddivine witness to the world,instead bequeathed a politicaland religious situation thatresulted in civil war. Israel inthe north broke away fromJudah in the south. Thenortherners set up a center ofworship in Gerizim to rival thetemple in Jerusalem. Thenorth became known asSamaria. Their religious andpolitical quarrels turned themin upon themselves.

However, dreams don'tdie. The initial vision andwisdom of Solomon lives on,even as his later foolishnessserves as a cautionary tale.

"Do you know where you're going to?" This question nodoubt will receive as many different approaches as there are peoplebeing asked the question. Not only will there by varying answers,there will also be different degrees of emotion accompanying thequestion.

THE PERSON who is a senior in high school will have adifferent feeling in dealing with the question than the sophomorewho is not pressured with having to make any immediatedecisions. The individual who has just finished college, or theperson who is trying to decide on a life work, or a marriage partner,will approach the question with grave seriousness. The man orwoman in the 40s and entering what psychologists term the "crisisof the limits" will stare the question in the eye with a soberinglook. It is this person who looks back over his life, views all thepossibilities that have been present, wonders why certain goalsand ideals were not met, and realizes that these will never befulfilled. He or she questions why life, with its money, fame, andpower, still lacks peace and fulfillment. "Do you know whereyou're going to?" is threatening, challenging question.

This song is the theme for the movie "Mahogany." DianaRoss plays the leading role. She portrays a person who has workedher way from poverty to becoming a famous model and fashio",designer. As she is working her way to fame, the question of whereis she going is easily handled. In fact, she "laughs at the questionsyou once asked of me." She has to compromise much on her way tothe top, but she doesn't mind since it helps her become the successthat she has always dreamed of becoming.

Granting some weak points in the movie, there are a numberof basic experiences of life to reflect on. There is the story ofseeking happiness and thinking that fame will bring that hap-piness. There is the story of living through that time of life whereour "free spirit" takes us down many roads, playing out manyoptions in life. There is the story of letting dreams "slip away" andwatching "doors close" as the person looks behind the journey oflife. It is the story of being amused and "laughing" at the seriousquestions of life as long as the person is in good health, attractive,has a sharp mind, a free spirit, and people are friends because weare successful. The real shock of this type of life story is the day wewake up and realize that many of these experiences are empty andfade with the passing of time. It is then that we wonder why wedidn't make the sacrifices and struggles necessary for more lastinghappiness.

I went to the movie expecting a sad ending with the finalscene focusing on her either ruining herself or either still askingthe question, "Do you know where you're going to?" However, itends with her returning to the love in her life, putting aside herown selfishness and self-seeking motives, and having someone toshare real success with. There is no doubt that this took a lot ofhumility and personal forgiveness.

I like Jewish people.Maybe it's because as a boy I fell on a picket fence in

Brooklyn trying to climb an apartment wall after a rubberball. People passed by. The only one who took me off thefence and carried me home was the Jewish delicatessenowner, Mr. Selig Lesnoy. The doctor said he saved my life.'From that day on the Lesnoy and Reynolds families werevery close.

Today we honor a Jewish family. You may think howeasy it was for Jesus to grow up as a perfect young man.After all, He was raised by two saints: Mary and Joseph. Noproblems. Except there were the poor living conditions atBethlehem. And the time Jesus was "lost" in the temple-certainly a lack of communication there. Or Mary "forcing"her son into action at Cana, simply because He was unwillingto "show off." Or the biting shame of having her Sonarrested as a criminal and the tragic loss when her Son wasexecuted. Every family has problems, even the best family.

But the "Joseph of Nazareth Family" is special; it's aJewish family. Of all the ethnic groups in the United States,

Jewish families have the smallest number of juveniledelinquents. The style of Jewish family life may present aclue. Jewish children grow up experiencing their father as therepresentative of God in the family.

Many Jewish feastdays are times of family celebrationand the father presides over the prayers. He blesses thechildren as God's representative. Then growing up, thechildren can accuse their father of not being a RobertRedford because he's getting bald, or not being another JoeNamath because he is getting fat, but they can never denythat for them he represents God.

How many Catholic fathers lead their families in prayer,or bless them before they go to bed? More fathers shouldrecognize their God-given authority to be a teacher and aleader of prayer in their family. Most fathers try year afteryear to provide the best of everything for their family. Andthey become "unknown" heroes since they are gone from thefamily for most of the day. But how impressive it would befor any family to have the father's presence be a joyfulreminder of God, as Joseph reminded his family of theFather. All fathers aren't perfect, but each one reflects theloving care, the protection of our Father in heaven. Eachfather has a special patron in heaven, God the Father, andshould make demands on the Father. And if more familiescould rely on the blessings flowing from the head of thefamily, perhaps less disunity and mistrust would be present.

The Christmas season' is very much a time for familycelebration. The sign of our familyhood is that we gatheraround our Christmas banquet. This Mass is also a familycelebration as we gather around our Father's table. As onefamily, we sign from our hearts in psalms, hymns and otherinspired songs. And the Father nourishes us with life-givingFood: His own Son.

Mass by Mass our own sonship grows. Let us prayduring this Mass for our own families, but especially for eachother —that we may long for the day when all of us willfinally be home with the Father.

. EDITOR: Your editorial,"Catholic Institutions ShouldBe Catholic," raised someinteresting points —namely, theadvantages and disadvantagesof priests and nuns wearingtheir Roman collars or nun'shabits.

It seems that many priestsand nuns today feel that peoplerelate better to them when theyare dressed in civilian clothes,that the collar or habit putspeople off and makes them feeluncomfortable. But I think thereason a person needing helpturns to a priest or nun insteadof a lay counselor is preciselywhat the collar or habitsymbolizes—here is a persondevoted to serving God andman and the Catholic Church.He might feel uncomfortabletalking to "just another guy,"but the collar or habit makesthe person wearing it standapart as someone special.

Likewise, a person choosesa Catholic school or hospitalspecifically because it isCatholic. What a- disap-pointment for someone todiscover that the only evidenceof its Catholicism is a Sister'sname on the letterheadstationery— no nuns inevidence as teachers or nurses,because either they aren't thereor they are dressed in civilianclothing. Of course theyshouldn't push the Catholicismon non-Catholics using theinstitution, but they should nottry to hide the fact, either.

EDITOR: As primarytime draws nearer, politiciansare swamping the area withpropaganda about themselvesand their opponents. But notonly is it the politiciansthemselves, but outside groupswho try to push their views onthe public.

The main example is theRight to Life movement, whichprints lists of possiblepresidential contenders andtheir views on abortion and theHuman Life Amendment. Thisis fine; it is useful to know howthe politicians stand on thisvital issue.

The problem is that thesegroups seem to imply that anycandidate who is pro-abortion isto be scorned regardless of hisother views, which might favorsuch desirable goals as racialequality, housing for all, im-proved education, sane foreignpolicy, etc.

Likewise, they seem to saythat a candidates's anti-abortion stand makes him thebest—or indeed the onlycandidate, ignoring the factthat he may also hold racistviews or have other undesirablequalities.

The Right to Life groupsserve a useful purpose, but theyshould stay out of politics ifthey are going to be so single-minded in their zeal that noother issues mean a thing tothem. Let the citizens vote onthe whole person, not one issue.

1975—the Holy Year ofreconciliation tha t drewmillions of Catholic pilgrimsto Rome—reconciliation wasfar from evident as a numberof countries were wracked bypolitical-Religious turmoil andworldwide economic troublesintensified human injustices.

In the United States, thegreat questions of publicmorality that Watergateraised in 1974 began to fade,and religious leaders turnedmore at tention to unem-ployment, housing shortagesand other economic justiceissues.

For U.S. Catholics, thereligious highlight of the yearwas the canonization Sept. 14of Elizabeth Ann Seton, thefirst U.S. native to be declareda saint.

And for more than amonth the issue of the right todie drew international at-tention to a small courtroomin Morristown, N.J., wherethe life or death of KarenQuinlan hung on a judge'sdecision whether to let herparents halt life-maintenancetreatment for the comatosegirl.

Nineteen seventy-fivealso was:

• The United NationsInternational Women's Year,with women's rights in theChurch and ordination ofwomen taking many religiousheadlines;

• A year of continuingreligious controversy overlegalized abortion;

• A year of reflection bythe U.S. Church on almostevery social justice issue aspart of the Catholic bicen-tennial observance, and actionby the bishops on some issues,notably the economy andhousing;

• A year marked byincreased interreligious un-derstanding on many issues,coupled, ironically, with in-ternal divisions and threats ofschism within some deno-minations.

Most of the political-religious conflicts in othernations did not affect theUnited States directly. Butone, the fall of South Vietnamto the North in April, broughtto the United States tens ofthousands of South Vietna-mese refugees, 40 per cent ofthem Catholic and manyfleeing for religious as well aspolitical reasons. Of the manyreligious organizations thatentered into the emergencyresett lement project, thelargest agency was Migrationand Refugee Services de-partment of the U.S. Cath-olic Conference.

# In Lebanon,exchangesof terrorism between Christianand Moslem factions throughthe year gradually escalatedinto full-scale civil war, whichwas only partially stopped bya cease-fire as the year wasdrawing to a close-

• In Portugal, Catholicsand communists faced offinnumerable times in 1975 asthe military junta that stageda coup in April 1974, triedunsuccessfully to restore thecountry to some semblance ofrepresentative government.

• On a lesser scale,Catholic Spain faced the deathof Generalissimo FranciscoFranco and the accession topower of King Juan Carlos;regional elections in Italybrought significant com-munist victories that shook upthe power structure of theruling Christian Democrats;and sporadic acts of terrorismmarked the continuingCatholic-Protestant conflict inNorthern Ireland.

• The United Nationscondemnation of Zionism as aform of racism was motivatedchiefly by political andeconomic factors, but it drewstrong denunciations frommany Christian religiousleaders, particularly fromCatholic bishops in thiscountry.

For Catholics throughoutthe world the 1975 Holy Yearwas a matter of continuing-interest. Despite soaring fuelcosts and worldwide economicproblems that curtailed manytraveling plans, millions ofpilgrims visited Rome.

Throughout the yearPope Paul VI tirelesslypreached his Holy Yearmessage of reconciliation.Among the many events thatmarked the year, it was thecanonization of Mother Seton

that caught the attention ofthe United States. But thePope also canonized orbeatified nearly 20 otherpersons, most of themmissionaries or, like MotherSeton, founder of religiousorders.

The other major in-ternational religious event ofthe year was the WorldCouncil of Churches' generalassembly in Nairobi, Kenya,Nov. 23-Dec. 10. Many of theresolutions at that meetingwere aimed at continuing theWCC's policy of standingstrongly on the side of humanrights, and the assemblycontinued its direction ofcooperation and collaborationwith the Roman CatholicChurch, the largest Christiandenomination outside the 286-member organization.

A wide range of otherissues also captured religiousheadlines in the United Statesduring the year. Among them:

• A group of MenomineeIndian activists in Gresham,Wis., opened the new year byseizing a former novitiate ofthe Alexian Brothers thereJan. 1 and holding it for morethan a month, until theAlexians agreed to give theproperty to the Menominees.

• On Jan. 3, the Vaticanissued new guidelines forCatholic-Jewish relations thatgenerally received praise butalso provoked some criticismfor their failure to mention theimportance of the land ofIsrael in Jewish religiousthought. In November the

U.S. hierarchy issued a majorstatement on the same topic,hailing a decade of progress inCatholic-Jewish relationssince the close of the SecondVatican Council.

• Also in January, Dr.Kenneth Edelin of Bostonwent on trial and was even-tually convicted of man-slaughter for the death of afetus in an abortion he per-formed.

• Jan. 23 saw a March forLife rally in Washington onthe second anniversary of theSupreme Court 's abortionrulings. Later in the year thepro-life movement suffered aserious blow when a Senatesubcommittee consideringanti-abortion amendments tothe U.S. Constitution defeatedall of the proposed amend-ments before it. In a pastoralplan issued at the end of the.year the U.S. bishops urged alegislative and social actionplan to fight abortion andother anti-life trends in thiscountry.

• A group of prominentCatholic, Protes tant andOrthodox theologians met inHartford, Conn, at the end ofJanuary and issued a widelypublicized appeal to theirfellow Christians for a .renewed sense of the tran-scendent in Christianteaching, preaching andliving.

• In February the U.S.bishops began the first of sixhearings on Liberty andJustice for All, the year-longfirst phase of a project

designed to observe thenation's bicentennial with anew Catholic social actionprogram.

• In March the U.S.Catholic Conference, intestimony before Congress,urged universal amnesty forillegal aliens in this country.The testimony marked thebeginning of a strong USCCcampaign for amnesty for theestimated eight millionillegals in the United States.

• In April Bishop Leo T.Maher of San Diego, Calif.,provoked a confrontation withthe National Organization forWomen (NOW) when he citedNOW's pro-abortion stance ina letter saying that Catholicwomen who publicly favorabortion are to be excludedfrom reception of theEucharist.

• April also markedapproval by Pope Paul of"The Eucharist and theHungers of the HumanFamily" as the theme for the41st International EucharisticCongress, to be held next yearin Philadelphia, Preparationsfor the event moved forwardduring 1975, and in Novemberthe U.S. bishops issued apastoral letter urgingCatholics to make thecongress an occasion forspiritual renewal.

• A new farm labor lawwas passed in California inMay, guaranteeing secretballot elections for unionrepresentation to the state'sfarmworkers. It was widely

• A conference in DetroitAug. 17-23, "Theology in theAmericas: 1975," drew newattention in the United Statesto Latin American liberationtheology, but a number ofcritics in the media arguedthat attempts to importliberation theology to thiscountry are unrealistic, andthe conference did not arousethe kind of enthusiasm thatmany participants had ap-parently hoped for.

• In October the courtcase on Karen Quinlan beganin Morristown, N.J. Herparents argued that she wouldnot want to be kept alive on arespirator with no hope ofrecovery, while her doctorsand state-appointed interest

In November, the U.S.bishops met in Washington,D.C. Among their majoractions were a pastoral planfor pro-life activities, andstatements on housing, theeconomy, and Catholic-Jewishrelations.

Thanksgiving Day inmany Catholic homes was anoccasion for new attention tothe " continuing problem ofworld hunger. Although themajor news coverage of theprevious year died downconsiderably, it was a year-long concern for mostreligious groups.

In December Pope PaulVI and Orthodox EcumenicalPatriarch Dimitrios I ofConstantinople announced theformation of a pan-Orthodoxcommission that will preparefor dialogue with the CatholicChurch.

The move was the mostsignificant step toward Or-thodox-Catholic reconciliationsince the mutual lifting ofexcommunications 10 yearsago by Pope Paul and the lateOr thodox E c u m e n i c a lPatriarch Athenagoras ofConstantinople (Istanbul).

Among the majorreligious leaders who diedduring 1975 were CardinalJozsef Mindszenty, exiledformer primate of Hungary;Cardinal Luigi Raimondi,former apostolic delegate inthe United States; andCardinal John Heenan ofWestminster, England.

Dr. Kenneth Edelin was convicted in Bostonfor killing a baby in a hysterotomy. The casegained worldwide attention. Cardinal JoszefMindszenty, symbol of anti-Communism, diedin May. Generalissimo Francisco Franco andhis eventual successor, then Prince JuanCarlos, attend a rally. Franco's death inNovember put Juan Carlos on the Spanishthrone as king. Mother Elizabeth Ann BaileySeton was canonized as the first saint fromwhat is now the U.S. Mother Teresa ofCalcutta, famous for her work among the poor,

"It's likea mini-retreat each weekand offers a short period ofquiet and meditation forme when I go over to thechurch." Although shebegan her service as altarchairman doing all of thelinens she now has twoother volunteers to helpher do the amices andfinger towls. "I've got itmade now," she laughs."In the beginning we even

Familia. En la mente de muchos celebraruna fiesta tan sefialada por la Iglesiadonde se honra el concepto de la familiaparece ser absurdo. En realidad, £comopodemos celebrar la union y el amor de lafamilia cuando nuestra sociedad indicauna situacion diferente?

Los padres se quejan de que sus hijosles desobedecen. Los hijos proclaman quesus padres no les entienden. Los esposos seseparan sin comprender los factores queles llevan a tal separacion, incluyendo suspropios problemas emocionales. Y el

*?iivundo que esta llamado a vivir en har-monia, parece que crece en el caos porquela familia, la fuente de la soiedad, se vadesintegrando.

Sin embargo, es precisamente unacelebracion como esta la que nos llama aexaminar nuestras vidas, a buscar y re-buscar en nuestro ambiente las raices quehacen de la familia cristiana una familiafeliz.

Decididamente el Evangelio nos in-dica los valores que hacen del cristiano yde su familia una fuente de inspiracion yde amor a los demas. Solamente cuandolos cristianos nos dispongamos aalimentarnos de esta Palabra de libertadpodremos vivir en libertad, sin prejuicios,compartiendo del amor que nace en elcorazon y que se extiende en la familia.

Cuando Jerusalem cay6 enmanos invasoras, muchos de sushabitantes fueron lanzados alexilio en tierras extrafias. ElTemplo habia sido destruido. El estilo prof6tico deEzequiel esti lleno de un sinfin desimbolos que expresan nosolamente la destruccidn de unanacion, sino tambito su futura'resurreccion'. Entre otrasfamosas imagenes descubiertasen su libro, la imagen de loshuesos secos manifiesta estecanto de esperanza: Israelparece haber muerto, pero sushuesos tomaran forma de nuevo;el Sefior le soplara su espiritu y"pondre nervios, y har6 crecercarne y los cubrire con piel"(Capitulo 37). A pesar de todo,Yave continiia acompafiando aSu pueblo hasta en el exilio. Misaiin, los traera de nuevo a laTierra Prometida.

Cuando llego el dia en que de acuerdo a la Ley de Moises debiancumplir el rito de purificacidn de la madre, llevaron al nifio aJerusalen. Una vez que cumplleron todo lo que ordenaba la Ley delSefior, volvieron a Galilea, a su ciudad de Nazaret. Y el nifio crecia, sedesarrollaba y se hacta cada dia mis sabio. Y la gracia de Dios estabaen el.

Lucas 2:22-40No hay mejor termometro de nuestra sociedad que la situacion

actual de la familia. La integridad de la sociedad depende de la in-tegridad familiar.

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Cada familiacristiana tiene mucho que aprender de la familia de Nazaret. Cadafamilia cristiana tambien es "sagrada."

Todos necesitamos pertenecer a alguna familia. Sea nuestrafamilia inmediata, sea la familia de la Iglesia. El ambiente familiar eslo que humaniza al hombre. Necesitamos vivir entrelazados como lascuentas de un rosario.

Una vez le preguntaron a un estudiante de catecismo si habiaalgun mandamiento que nos indicara como tratar a nuestros her-manosy hermanas. Despu6s de pensar un poco, el nifio contesto: "jSi,no matar!" Si cada uno mira su pasado no es dificil encontrarocasiones de nuestra nifiez en que hubieramos estado de acuerdo coneste joven estudiante de catecismo. -

Pero a pesar de todos los pormenores e inconvenientes quenuestra vida familiar presentara, habia algo que nos unia: el serparte de la familia.

Este "sentirse parte" es esencial en nuestro desarrollo humaneSentirse parte de una misma familia conquista cualquier divisi6n oresentimiento entre hermanos.

La Sagrada Familia de Nazaret era una familia unida. En esteambiente familiar Jesus "crecia, se desarrollaba, y se hacia cada dfamas sabio."

Todos sabemos que una de las instituciones que m£s sufre en losregimenes comunistas es la familia. Peroiacaso no sufre violencia lafamilia tambien en este pais?

El materialismo, el individualismo, la falta de tiempo, la pocaeducaci6n religiosa de nuestros hijos. Todo esto va minando nuestrasfamilias. Peligra la salud familiar mientras los valores espiritualessean secundarios a los valores materiales. Si una casa mas lujosa esmds importante que pasar los fines de semana con nuestros hijos esposible que cuando nos dispongamos a disfrutar nuestro bienestarmaterial no tengamos una familia con quien compartirlo-

Jesus, Maria y Jos6 son nuestro modelo de vida familiar. Que elamor que reinaba en el hogar de Nazaret sea tambign una realidad ennuestras familias cristianas en nuestros tiempos.

Fifo se encontraba en elsegundo ano de universidad, y conplanes de llegar a ser ingeniero,cuandoperdi6 la vista. Para 61 fueun nuevo comienzo. Inici6 uncamino totalmente distinto dondela musica sustituyb a la ingenieria.

Lo que Fifo es hoy, es unproducto de autoformacion yperseverancia. Muchos pensabanque no lo lograria, pero el caso esque ha ido reuniendo en su casatoda una serie de instrumentosmusicales y tiene ya un sin-cronizador electr6nico o "mixer"que 61 mismo opera a pesar de susmas de 100 controles. El mismohace grabaciones musicales queincluyen tres o cuatro ins-trumentos.

"Primero grabo cada uno delos instrumentos por separado,"nos explica. "Despu6s los sin-cronizo electronicamente con el"mixer."

"Como no veo los indicadoresdel volumen y tono, manipulo loscontroles a oido. Cuando viene unvocalista, generalmente ya tengotoda la parte instrumental lista, 61solo tiene que cantar encimamientras hago la grabaci6n."

Ademas de hacer arreglosmusicales, Fifo tambi6n compone:"Me gusta tocar los instrumentoshasta ver que me dicen con sumelodia. Despu6s busco laspalabras."

"No siempre es f£cil mantenerel entusiasmo," nos confiesa aladmitir todo lo que ha sido para 61,el apoyo de sus padres. Los que leconocen a Fifo no dudan en admitirlo que el ha sido para ellos:

"Mas de una vez he ido avisitarle cuando me encontraba -pesimista y triste, y ha sido 61quien me ha animado," comentabauno de sus amigos.

Coopera con Nodarte, que haescrito varias de estas obras yjuntos estdn ahora preparando unaserie radial sobre personajes de lahistoria de Cuba, que serinpresentados en los programas deservicio publico conectados con lasperegrinaciones de las distintasprovincias de Cuba a la Ermita dela Caridad.

"Son estampas socio-religiosas de nuestra historia, queseryirdn de inspiraci6n paramuchos . . . Fifo realizard lasgrabaciones en su casa," explic6Nodarte.

Los domingos, Fifo toca elorgano y dirige un pequefio corodurante la misa hispana en la -parroquia de San Hugo. Por lodemas, su vida se desarrolla

normalmente entre el carifio de suspadres y la amistad de quienesllegan a conocerle. Su compania esmuy agradable, segun afirmantodos. "Con una gran sensibilidadpara detectar todo lo que ocurre asu alrededor, durante los ensayossiempre interviene acertadamenteanimando o corrigiendo a los »"i-tores," dicen.

"Nunca se desanima. Alcontrario ma's de una vez ha sabidoromper un momento tenso, con unpar de chistes," coment6 otroamigo.

Al preguntarle sobre el futuroy sobre sus planes para el nuevoafio, Fifo reflexiona. Realmente a61 le basta con el presente . . . peroafiade: "Me gusta la musica,aunque nunca pens6 hacer de ellauna profesi6n. Me gustaria poderestablecer un pequefio negocio degrabacion . . . algo como lo quehago en casa, pero con car£cter -m£s comercial."

Y mientras ese momento Uega,Fifo sigue contento con su musica ysu servicio desinteresado. Sabeque la felicidad es algo que seconquista dia a dia y que a pesar delas dificultades es algo que sepuede llevar dentro y compartircon los demds.

Al menos eso es lo que s'epercibe despu6s de pasar un ratoen su compafiia.

El espiritu de Navidad esta presente hoy en lascalles y en los hogares de Miami y del mundo. Losninos en el Centro Cat61ico San Juan de Puerto Rico(1 y 2) lo celebraron con representaciones esc6nicasy villancicos siguiendo la tradici6n boricua. En elCentro Hispano Cat61ico (3) la Liga de Damas hizoque decenas de "abuelitos y abuelitas" anoraranaquellas navidades de "los buenos tiempos" en laCuba de ayer, mientras disfrutaban de un apetitosoalmuerzo animado por artistas. Tambi&i en unanota de nostalgia, el Padre Modesto Galofr6, (4) quecada ano en las Escuelas Pias de Guanabacoa,

Cuba, creaba un artistico nacimiento que millaresde personas acudian a admirar, mantuvo sutradici6n en la iglesia de San Juan Bosco. Y comoayer en Cuba, millares de grandes y chicosacudiran a admirar esa estampa de Navidad enfigurillas de porcelana. Es tiempo de cantatas, devillancicos, de cena en el calor del hogar, de misadel gallo, de alegre compartir entre hermanos,celebrando que Dios se hizo hombre.
