NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti

NABANABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti is an internationally renowned Academy focused on arts and design. Founded in Milan in 1980 upon the private initiative of prominent artists such as Ausonio Zappa, Guido Ballo and Gianni Colombo, it is the largest private Academy in Italy and the first one to have been recognised back in 1981, by the Higher Education in Art, Music and Dance (AFAM) system, which is part of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). Born with the aim of overcoming the limits of traditional disciplines to introduce visions and languages closer to the contemporary artistic practices and to the system of art and creative professions, NABA has been the first fine arts academy in Italy to offer recognised courses in Fashion, Graphics and Design.NABA’s growth has begun in the ‘90s, leading to collaborations with prestigious cultural institutions, further enriching its educational offer and opening its doors to an increasing number of international students from all over the world. In 2018, the Academy became part of Galileo Global Education, a leading international provider of higher education and, afterwards, opened a new campus in Italy's capital city. With its two campus in Milan and Rome, the Academy currently offers academic degrees equivalent to first and second level university degrees in the Communication and Graphic Design, Design, Fashion Design, Media Design and New Technologies, Set Design, and Visual Arts Areas. At the end of the programmes, students obtain the necessary credits (CFA) to continue their studies either within Academies or Universities in Italy and abroad. According to the last research conducted by UniItalia (Centre for the academic promotion and orientation of study in Italy) on AFAM institutes in the A.Y. 2018/19, NABA is the Italian Academy of Fine Arts with the highest number of foreign students, confirming its prestige as the most international Art and Design Academy in Italy.

learning by thinkingOur programmes constitute a continuous sequence of multidisciplinary experiences generating research and projects in the artistic and professional contexts of current trends.

learning by doingIdeas become projects, strategies, techniques and technologies, turning into prototypes and in some cases developing into products for the companies we work with.

teaching by learningLearning by doing is also teaching by learning and this has changed the relationship between teachers and students: classes and groups have transformed into work teams that liaise continuously with companies and research institutes. Experience forms the methodological skeleton through which innovation insinuates itself and guides us in planning the future together.

AREAS ACADEMIC OFFER

Communication and Graphic DesignThrough the different study levels provided by the BA in Graphic Design and Art Direction, the MA in Communication Design and the Academic Master in Creative Advertising, this Area distinctively meets the continuously evolving needs of the field of communication, integrating an academic approach with the experimentation of visual languages.

DesignThe Area includes the BA in Design and the MAs in Interior Design, in Product and Service Design, and in Social Design, providing skills and theoretical as well as practical tools to imagine and design the future, to approach elaborate ideas in a crossdisciplinary way, to manage complex processes, and to adapt to change and create scenarios.

Fashion DesignDeveloping through the BA in Fashion Design and the MAs in Fashion Design and in Textile Design, the Area focuses on theoretical and projectrelated topics, with a contemporary and innovative approach. The academic path provides the cultural and methodological tools to nurture talents and competencies, and to recognise fashion as an expressive language capable of interpreting the most original and contemporary demands.

Media Design and New TechnologiesThe purpose of this Area, which includes the BAs in Media Design and Multimedia Arts and in Creative Technologies, and the MA in New Technologies for Arts, is to expand knowledge and the most advanced media and creative technologybased methods to create complex and contemporary authorial and research projects.

Set DesignThrough the BA in Set Design, offered by NABA since the beginning, this Area introduces students to the varied world of set and costume design for the show business and for live events, from opera to theatre plays, from dance to musicals to concerts, and to new kinds of sets for performances, exhibitions, events, music videos, and fashion shows.

Visual ArtsBy means of the BA in Painting and Visual Arts, the MA in Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies, and the Academic Masters in Contemporary Art Markets and in Photography and Visual Design, this Area addresses contemporary art as a methodology that enables interdisciplinary and crosscultural approaches, beginning with an indepth investigation into the aesthetic, social and economic contexts, opening up to the challenges of the future.

The programmes and topics indicated in this brochure may undergo variations due to academic or ministerial reasons.

Credit points in the Higher Education in Art, Music and Dance system (AFAM) The AFAM Institutions use academic credits (CFA) which, just as ECTS European Credit Transfer System, are based on the idea of “workload”. CFA and ECTS are fully equivalent (1 CFA = 1 ECTS). One CFA normally corresponds to 2025 hours of student work spent between facetoface activities with professors, and individual study, research and projects development. The average amount of academic work performed by a student in one year is conventionally calculated as 60 credits.

Awarded degrees and ministerial denominationsThe degrees awarded at the end of AFAM programmes are First Level (Bachelor of Arts) and Second Level (Master of Arts) Academic Degrees and First Level Academic Master Degrees (Academic Master), recognised by the MIUR and equivalent to University Degrees. The BA in Creative Technologies corresponds to the ministerial name of “First Level Academic Degree in New Technologies for Applied Arts”; the MAs in Interior Design, in Product and Service Design, and in Social Design to that of

“Second Level Academic Degree in Design”; the MAs in Fashion Design and in Textile Design to “Second Level Academic Degree in Fashion and Textile Design”.

Following the “learning by doing” approach, the BA alternates and integrates theoretical studies with experiential workshops. After having explored basic concepts and techniques, students learn to observe the multitude of contemporary forms of design and how to apply them to their work. The programme aims

at stimulating sensitivity and passion for the world of objects, understood as cultural artefacts that reflect and shape human life. It explores space as an environment, examining its interactions with objects and its function as a stage for individual and collective rituals.

RELATIONS AND CAREER SERVICE

INDUSTRY RELATIONS The Industry Relations office represents a bridge between the Academy and the working world, promoting collaborations with companies interested in the young, creative minds of our students.

These projects put students in touch with leading companies in the fields of design, fashion, graphics, communication and art, enabling them to gain an insight into how companies work and to prove their skills with the goal of creating their own professional future.

CAREER SERVICENABA's Career Service office supports students and alumni through:

◼ the building and development of their skills;

◼ support in the creation of their career path;

◼ the definition of personal branding tools thanks to a dedicated Career Coaching service;

◼ the opportunity of internships at leading companies in the relevant fields.

Students and alumni can find the perfect match with companies thanks to NABASymplicity, the online platform where the former can showcase their curricula vitae and portfolio, and where the latter can advertise internships and job offers and select the profiles that best fit their requirements.

Every year, NABA's Career Service office promotes a Talent Harbour Week and a Talent Harbour Day, oncampus initiatives that offer students and alumni the chance to spectate round tables and to take part to recruiting sessions managed by prominent company representatives. This is also an occasion for them to receive marketfocused updates in their fields of interest.

The Career Service office promotes the Job Corner; a service dedicated to recent graduates and alumni, in order to facilitate their entrance into the working world thanks to individual meetings and career orientation sessions.

library NABA’s Library features over 14 thousand books, 50 subscriptions to sectorspecific periodicals and more than 500 DVDs related to the various study fields of the Academy. All of these resources are available to the students in the quiet and peaceful environment of the library, or can be taken home by students for longer consultations. A Materials Library has also been set up within the library, where more than 100 samples of innovative materials are exhibited for students to touch with their own hands. In addition, students can access, free of charge, ten of the most important online databases, including the Vogue Archive, Bof and WGSN, as well as more than 500 ebooks.

student life NABA's Student Life office assists the students during their academic studies proposing or facilitating numerous extracurricular activities to foster integration and socialisation. These activities, promoted together with the Students' Council (Consulta degli Studenti), that is the main student representative body of the Academy, can include guided tours, recreational classes, and sports activities such as football, volleyball, basketball and table tennis. In fact, NABA annually promotes and supports the creation of Academy sport teams and their participation in official local university tournaments.

The students can benefit from the many agreements signed by the Academy with cultural and commercial services, including sports centres, copy shops, theatres, medical centres and restaurants, in addition to a medical assistance service provided by appointment at a private medical practice near the campus. NABA has also set up the Buddy Project: within this initiative, a group of second and third year students volunteer additional support to international students. In addition to creating a network of relationships with new students, the Buddy Project helps students to improve their language skills and their knowledge of different cultures.

SEASY: EPDA AWARD

Which content and which container will we need in the future? This is the chal-lenge of the EPDA contest for the BA in Graphic Design and Art Direction stu-dents. The winning project has drawn curves inspired by the sea and seaweed, applying them on a food packaging that

is both attractive and good for environ-ment. The project was developed dur-ing A.Y. 2018-2019 by Chiara Versaico, Lorenzo Vivaldini, Elisabetta Vedovato and Matteo Varisco, NABA students of the Packaging design course, under the guidance of the lecturer Luca Ferreccio.

SAN BENEDETTOAndrea Bartoli, Yuri Falcioni, Francesco Magni

This project was selected by San Bene-detto as the best proposal for the new edition of “Limited Edition Sleek Cans”, the creative contest conceived for the Undergraduate programme in collab-oration with the brand. During the year, the students created the graphic design

proposals for the tea cans presenting a complete packaging and communica-tion project; this is an important result of the fourth edition of a collaboration started in 2015 with the brand. The project was developed under the guid-ance of the lecturers of Future Scenarios Patrizia Moschella, Communication and Graphic Design Area Leader, Emanuele Soi and Alberto Bettinetti of the Visual Design course, with the support of the lecturer Luca Ferreccio.

DESIGN

DOTSLuca Vernieri, Chiara Torterolo

Dots originates from the idea to rein-terpret the BS classic studded surface flooring, designed by Franco Albini and Franca Helg in 1962 for Milan’s under-ground. A historical and iconic material, 100% made in Italy, with an extremely high graphic and design value, based on which a collection of furnishing accessories, comprising three small tables, three containers and a console, have been created. The rubber was

gradually manipulated into the various accessories, proceeding by intermedi-ate stages of use: starting with a surface, initially free and then flexed to create a series of volumes. Dots offers a different perspective on this material, enhancing and ennobling its pre-existing qualities through unprecedented chromatic and formal compositions, providing new ave-nues to explore.Dots is a final project by the NABA BA in Design students Chiara Torterolo and Luca Vernieri conceived under the guid-ance of Claudio Larcher.

AGO Edoardo Trombin, Giorgia Salamanca

This project derives from reflections on certain issues related to fly fishing. These include the cultural limits of this sport and the lack of innovation in the equipment used by fly anglers. From the outset, the idea was to design a product capable of radically changing how this activity is conducted, which has remained unchanged for centuries. Secondly, our objective was to attract young individuals to engaging in this sport. Technology is a fundamental element of the project and a common feature of smart devices, the internet of things and, in particular, wearable tech-nology. Technology is revolutionising the way people live, in particular in relation to objects, simplifying them and expanding their functions. Ago is a technological and connected fly fishing kit, made up of a tube for fishing tackle, a rod and reel.

Ago is a final project developed under the guidance of Claudio Larcher, NABA Design Area Leader; it was awarded with the Critics Award at the 23rd edition of Targa Bonetto.

WOODOPIAGiulia Botticchio

Woodopia derives from the combination of the term “wood”, the main material of the project, and -opia (uto-pia). In fact, it

narrates the utopian journey towards a different community without social bar-riers and the fear of anything different. The project recounts a journey through the rooms enabling individual users to become part of something, to feel trans-ported to another reality via the books

and the library itself. The project origi-nated within the “Culture on the move” proposal involving the Vigentina Library in collaboration with Milan City Council.

FABERLuca Magistrali

Faber is a manifesto of the link between craftsmanship and design, a simple set of tools (hammer and screwdriver) designed to deliver a story to homes, as well as a simple object. The stu-dent attributed the global meaning of

“handmade” to the hammer in this pro-ject, just as the Global Tools collective did in the past. The shapes are a further simplification of the already elementary shapes of a classic hammer, just like the materials, only wood and steel.Faber is a final project made by the NABA student Luca Magistrali conceived under the guidance of Dante Donegani, NABA Design Advisor.

MAGAZINE ‘SO YOUNG SO OLD’Magazine edited by students of the BA in Fashion Design, Fashion Styling and Communication Specialisation, coordinated by the lecturers Paolo Bazzani and Michele Corradini

Each year, students on the Fashion Styl-ing and Communication Specialisation create a magazine, overseeing its cre-ative and graphic content and working closely with students studying Fashion Design Specialisation, in a sort of contin-uous creative workshop. The production of the magazine provides opportunities for students from different areas to interact and work together on a project involving various figures connected with the representation of fashion, such as art directors, stylists and graphic designers.

The 2019 edition of the magazine cre-ated for the So Young So Old Fashion Show contains numerous editorials developing this theme proposed by Nicoletta Morozzi, NABA Fashion Advi-sor. Young and old, two adjectives closely related to the idea of time take on differ-ent values in accordance with the values associated with them, constituting food for thought on fashion and its production sector.

CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIESCLOCKWORLD Aron Gilli, Marco Consoli, Riccardo Ortombina and Beatrice Lenzi Game Design projectDetails of software used: Unity3D and Blender

ClockWorld is an RPG with metroidva-nia-style exploring of the settings and a combat system inspired by the rhythm game genre. The setting is a world in which the passage of time is the victim of an anomaly; the characters are only able to perform one single action for eternity. This is the case until a player comes along, who must decide whether to free them or absorb them to become stronger. The player’s choices have con-sequences on the world’s fate.

ARTISSIMA THROUGH THE EYES OF NABA

NABA collaborated with Artissima, the International Contemporary Art Fair in Turin. Students from NABA’s Media Design and New Technologies Area

produced a series of video clips to document the three days of the twen-ty-sixth edition of the Turin fair. At the end of the event, the video have been diffused through Artissima social media platforms to offer the participants - and the younger audience especially - a ret-rospective look on the event, which is at the same time a documentation and an interpretation and reveals new visions

and alternative readings. In line with the visual identity of the 2019 fair edition, the project seeks to amplify those unique features that make Artis-sima one of the landmarks of the Italian and international art fair system, offer-ing a thorough overview of its actors and contents: from artworks to galler-ies, from the audience of art lovers to experts, and from specific projects to

exhibitions around the city. The collaboration between NABA and Artissima offered the students the opportunity to produce audiovisual documents with a strong contempo-rary edge, facing them to a complex and fascinating context like that of the first contemporary art fair in Italy.

FRAGMENTS/FRAMES FROM A QUARANTINE28 students of the Animation Specialisation

To create this experimental short ani-mated film, the ways and poetics of team work were blended with the feelings and experiences the students lived during the Covid-19 lockdown. Each student

was asked to create a drawing that rep-resented their personal lockdown expe-rience: these drawings then became the key frames of the animation.

In a collective animation session on a shared server, each student was able to freely intervene on each frame, using Lines, innovative minimalist animation software enabling the collaborative crea-tion of animation sequences in real time.

FIGARO! OPERA CAMION Direction - Francesco Bartoli Avveduti and Jacopo Brenicci, Sound design - Giorgio Corna Production - Davide Lionello Editing - Isotta Fiorenzi Colorist - Matteo Falvo

Il Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (The Rome Opera House) goes out in the open taking its Opera Camion programme

into the city, bringing Figaro to Rome’s squares. Thus bringing opera to new audiences, sharing culture and enter-tainment. NABA’s students, coordi-nated by the lecturer Marianna Schivardi, documented the show from behind the scenes, conducting numerous inter-views in order to recount a short story on the truck opera, the performance that travels from square to square with its orchestra and company of singers. The video made by the students is available on NABA’s YouTube channel.

ROMA 1930Jacopo Martinotti Performance at MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secoloInstallation view: Adrian Paci, One and Twenty-One Chairs

A selection of verses of a poem by San-dro Penna are drawn as an architec-tural design project on a leftover piece of marble. Roma 1930 (Rome 1930) is a performance where this poem brings together the two cities of Milan and Rome. A journey that concludes with the re-enactment of a Greek folk dance:

“Hasapiko”. The gesture in Jacopo Mar-tinotti’s artistic research evokes testi-monies of cultural context, exposing an inevitable relationship with history.

POÉTIQUE DE LA RELATIONFabrizio Milani

Poétique de la Relation (Poetics of Rela-tion) is a site specific display that aims to engage users. A polysemic container,

a place par excellence for debating and reflecting becomes a space for discuss-ing and dialoguing, understood as the highest form of Relation. Poétique de la Relation forms part of broader research carried out by the NABA artist and alum-nus, Fabrizio Milani, and the independ-ent curator, Simona La Neve.
