More than 3 million miles of roads and over 300,000 bridges in the United States are owned and maintained by local governments.

In 1982, the Federal Highway Administration established the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). In 1991, the Tribal Technical Assistance Program (TTAP) was also created. LTAP and TTAP help local governments improve management of their transportation networks.

There are 58 LTAP/TTAP Centers: one in each state, one in Puerto Rico, and seven regional Centers that serve tribal governments. Most Centers are housed at colleges, universities and state departments of transportation.

The mission of LTAP/TTAP is to foster a safe, efficient, and environmentally sound surface transportation system by improving skills and increasing knowledge of the transportation workforce and decision makers. LTAP/TTAP strives to improve safety for users on local roads, help local governments build and maintain their

That’s how many people are killed or injured in and around U.S. transportation construction projects each year, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Industry leaders have decided status quo safety performance is not enough. They’ve launched the Safety Certi� cation for Transportation Project Professionals™ (SCTPP) program to address this serious public health issue.

Its goal: To signi� cantly boost the hazard awareness and risk management skills of all transportation project professionals who are in positions of in� uence—from project inception through completion—to cause a decline in safety incidents.

The SCTPP is designed to meet the rigorous protocols for ANSI ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation.

There are three windows to take the certi� cation exam in 2017:

Honorary Life Membership is one of the highest honors ARTBA bestows. This honor is given to recognize extraordinary, long-term service to the association. The following are guidelines for nominating an individual for ARTBA Life Membership:

1. Has the individual held ARTBA membership for at least 15 years?

2. Has the individual served at least five years in ARTBA leadership positions? This would include service as an: ARTBA Officer, Division Officer, Member of the ARTBA Board of Directors, Advisory Council Chairman or ARTBA Committee Chairman.

3. Has the individual provided—or helped generate—substantial, extraordinary financial support to the association through individual contributions, fundraising, or membership development?

4. Does the individual want to receive a Life Membership?

5. ARTBA Life Membership is automatically bestowed on those individuals who are honored as recipients of the annual ARTBA Award.

LIFE MEMBERS


In 1960, the association established the “ARTBA Award” to recognize individuals for outstanding contributions that have advanced the broad goals of the association. It is the highest honor the association bestows. Many distinguished members of the transportation construction industry have received the award, including more than a dozen U.S. representatives and U.S. senators, two U.S. secretaries of transportation and two state governors. Since 1972, this award has been presented annually to public and private sector individuals. (Private sector recipients are noted in italics.)
