Case Study - Mining Joint Venture

Why JV model?

Mine owner and Thriveni will sign an agreement to operate the mine belonging to mine owner.

It is a business model where the mine owner and Thriveni will arrive at the cost of operation till the sales, considering all parameters like strip ratio of the mine, cost of mining, lead distance, logistics, etc. In this cost, the royalty amount to the mine owner will also be taken into consideration to ensure minimum guaranteed profit to the mine owner. This mutually agreed cost of operation will

remain the same throughout the life of the mine.

The real benefit to the owner is that, even if the market prices are lesser than the operation cost, the owner gets the minimum guaranteed profit.

In addition to the above, the net profit from this project will be shared proportionately as per the investment done by both the parties.

Thriveni provides an end-to-end mining service which extends from obtaining statutory approvals from government bodies to exploration, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling from face processing plant, screening, crushing, beneficiation, dozing, haul road maintenance, dump management, environment measures, quality control and dispatch.

Thriveni takes the operational responsibility and the owner is free from operational risks. However, the owner is responsible for the legal risks.

Through this JV model the owner benefits substantially as he invests a lesser amount to support the development of the mine and operations.

Case Study - Mining MDO Model

The Pakri Barwadih coal mine is in the state of Jharkhand in India. The area is fraught with fringe groups trying to mobilise society for civil strife. Despite more than a decade of granting this mine, and trying out established contractors like Thiess, the mine was not operational.

When Thriveni won the contract to develop and operate this 15 Mtpa mine in Oct 2015, the whole mining industry was keenly watching whether Thriveni will be able to deliver where others have failed.

By closely integrating the community, Thriveni was able to bring this mine into production within a record time of one year. The business model of Thriveni hinges on its ability to integrate community. So the erstwhile resistance melted, and foes became friends.

The result is for all to see. In FY18, Thriveni will despatch +2 Mt coal for use in the power generation units of NTPC.

We will rapidly ramp up production to 6 Mtpa in FY19, and within next two years, the mine will produce to its full capacity of 15 Mtpa.

Thriveni is deploying the latest technologies at the PB mine like IOT based control room, in-pit crushing and conveying, predictive maintenance, etc., which will help the Indian mining industry to adapt technologies.

This demonstrates Thriveni’s ability in working in very difficult operating environment and integrating all the stake holders into its operations thereby exceeding client expectations.

Case Study - Mining Contract Model

The Mangampet Barytes mine is the world’s largest Barytes deposit having a reserve of 50 Mt. Thriveni won the contract from the state owned AMPDC Ltd through competitive tendering process in 2015. The APMDC production till 2015 was less than 1 Mt. After Thriveni took charge as a contractor, the baryte production has increased to 2.5 Mt. per year and it is the second largest producer globally.

Mining – Owner and Investor

Jonnagiri Gold mine located in South India is owned by Geomysore India (P) Ltd, a subsidiary of an Australian company. 244,000 ounces of gold has been proved so far by the exploration conducted in a 6 sq. km. area (35,000 mtrs). Thriveni holds 36.27% stake in this company. The mining operations will be started in the last quarter of 2018 and Thriveni has been awarded as an MDO Contractor.

This is the first Manganese block (11 Mt Reserve) awarded by the Government of India through mineral auction process. Thriveni won this block by quoting maximum revenue share to the state government. Thriveni is planning for an exploration activity to bring the geological resource to the next level. All the statutory approvals are in place to commence the exploration operation. Mining operation will commence by 2019 end.

Thriveni started its journey in Indonesia by acquiring this 3 Mtpa coal mine at Jambi. The coal produced from this mine is directly exported to Japan, Korea, Singapore, India and Vietnam.

BRPL is a 4 Mtpa integrated Iron Ore pellet manufacturing business in Odisha. Its facilities include a 4.0 Mtpa pellet plant, 4.7 Mtpa beneficiation plant and a 230 Km underground slurry pipeline to transport iron ore fines in slurry form from the beneficiation plant to the pellet plant in an ecofriendly and cost effective manner.

BRPL was established by Stemcor Group, UK with an estimated investment of over USD 330 Million (INR 2000 Crore) in 2013-14.

For various reasons, BRPL went into financial difficulty and defaulted on its debt servicing to the erstwhile secured lenders to the company who invoked restructuring and was managing the operations of the company. In addition, BRPL also accumulated significant amount of debt towards its shareholders.

Consequently, BRPL was unable to utilize its production capacity and was intermittently profitable.

Thriveni Earthmovers and JSW worked out a comprehensive restructuring plan for BRPL to take out its lenders and shareholders.

Within a short span of time, BRPL’s production has increased 33% and cost of conversion has decreased 15%. BRPL will turn around in FY19 and will become a leading player in the industry.

This demonstrates Thriveni Earthmovers ability to work through significant acquisition involving complex financial and operating restructuring and creating substantive value in the process.

Case study: HEMM Leasing

We purchase old and used equipment from overseas at lowest cost and refurbish the same at our world-class rebuild centre, where all the components like engine, transmission, hydraulics and others will be meticulously checked and repaired and refurbished. We have a dedicated mechanical team to refurbish the equipment.

Also, we assure 90% availability for each refurbished equipment. Asia’s largest loader Letourneau L2350 was leased out to Reliance coal mine, where it gave a record availability of 93%.

Irrigation and Civil contracts

River-linking project of Andhra Pradesh government. Thriveni took a part of the contract in 2015 to excavate and handle the 80 million cum of hard rock and soft soil. This project is reviewed by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh every week. Thriveni has removed 40 million cum of hard rock and soft rock deploying the world’s largest equipment like 650T class excavator Liebherr R 996, 240T dump trucks, 100-ton dump trucks. This project is progressing at a very fast pace because of our quarrying activity. Once this project is completed 6.41 lakhs of land will get water source for agriculture.

Exploration

Thriveni specializes in Core drilling and Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling.

Thriveni has totally 8 rigs and it can drill up to 1000 mtrs and we have achieved 1000 mtrs depth at our Mozambique operation. Our sophisticated fleet comprises of Boart Longyear LF 90D Core Drilling Rigs, Sandvik DE710, and BLD525 with a range of ancillary equipment. With more than a decade’s experience in variety of geological situations, we have developed specialized drilling methods to provide maximum core and sample recovery.

Geovale Service, a subsidiary of Thriveni is focused on pre-mining activities including site visit, conducting airborne survey, remote sensing, geological studies, geotechnical studies, hydrological studies, geological resource modelling, geological report preparation and other pre-mining activities. Geovale is managed by renowned leading geologists.

We have a separate statutory division comprising of legal experts to assist our owners to obtain approvals with the meticulous follow-up with the respective approving authority.

Capability statement

Exploration is one of the biggest strengths which creates an opportunity for our mining business.

Balda Block Iron ore mine is one of the largest mines in India having 15.15 Mtpa capacity and it is operating since 1950 to 2010 from various owners with less than 1 Mtpa capacity. When we entered this mine in 2010, the remaining reserve was only 50 Mt and we have deployed our biggest exploration rigs and done extensive exploration about 20,000 metres with closed grid intervals in 400 ha area, which increased the remaining reserve from 50 Mt to 300 Mt. Subsequently, we got approval from the government to increase the annual capacity from 1 Mtpa to 15.15 Mtpa showing the reserve potential and today Balda Block is considered as the largest Iron ore mine in India because of us.

Rebuild Centre Facilities

Engine Test Bench

Thriveni is the first mining company that established its own rebuild centre to refurbish the biggest mining equipment. The workshop is very sophisticated and is built in an area of 25 acres. Our main focus is that we buy old used equipment from overseas and bring it here to refurbish. While refurbishing, each component will be thoroughly checked and repaired by our internal team in an organized manner. We follow the separate Safe Operating Procedures (SOP) for different set of equipment.

Rebuild centre reduces the Capital Expenditure as we are refurbishing the equipment at one-third cost of the brand-new equipment with maximum life and availability equivalent to the new equipment.

We purchased L2350, the world’s largest front-end loader from Canada. We brought it here and refurbished in 60 days. This loader was leased out to Reliance for their Sasan coal mine, where our refurbished loader has recorded 93% availability, while their new same class loader was giving only 85% availability. This is a classic example of Thriveni’s refurbishment skills.

Mineral Processing

In Iron ore and Coal, mineral processing plays a vital role. Our expertise lies in design, engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning a mineral processing plant. Our own EPCC team has designed and commissioned one of the biggest processing plants in India i.e.1500 tph Central Processing Unit in Balda Block Iron ore mines, which is completely covered and dust and noise free environment is adopted. We operate and maintain this plant.

We have also designed, erected and commissioned a 2 Mtpa coarse Iron ore beneficiation plant with jigging, thickener and filter process technology. This is a zero discharge plant, where water will be completely recycled.

Logistics & Trading

Logistics is the only factor which makes any project viable/unviable economically. Underground Slurry pipeline technology is the best cost effective transportation system, by which the total operating cost will be substantially reduced. This is 100% eco-friendly system where the material loss will be zero.

Thriveni has a 230 km underground slurry pipeline that connects the Iron ore beneficiation plant located in mine head with the pellet plant. The capacity of the pipeline is 5 Mtpa. India has now started implementing the slurry pipeline transportation system by seeing its cost viability.

Road: We have our own Logistic company to cater our transportation need to deliver the commodity to the end users within the prescribed timeline. We have also clubbed major local transporters into our domain and providing them job opportunities.

Water: Road Logistics is the biggest bottleneck in Indonesia. The transportation of produced coal must be done through river logistics only and there are constraints in river logistics during the rainy season. We have adopted barge transportation to transport the coal form our mines to the mother vessel. We own few 1000 ton and 8000 ton barges and also we have signed an agreement with the local Barge owners to deploy their barges in our project. We are almost using about 15 barges every day.

Technology and Innovation

Fleet Monitoring System (FMS)

Fleet Monitoring System is a centralised monitoring system by which the activities happening in the various mines will be monitored and studied at centralised control room.

FMS has really helped us to identify the unproductive time in hauling and subsequently we have taken the correct measures to reduce the Idle time which in turn increases the productivity and operating cost also been reduced proportionately.

Quick Dispatch System

Quick Dispatch System (QDS) was introduced to reduce the time and increase the despatch efficiency. QDS concept was introduced by Thriveni in Odisha. Earlier days, there were no quantity adjustment system for the trucks which carries Iron ore from mine to outside so trucks used to return back to loading point whenever underloaded/overloaded. Hence, we built QDS structure in such way that a platform comes above the weighbridge at height of truck along with hopper to store Iron ore. Now, the overloaded/underloaded trucks will be easily be adjusted with mini excavators located on platform.

Simulator Training

“We Put People First in Training” – Operator’s efficiency is very important in controlling the cost so we put them in training first. We bought very expensive simulators from overseas, which we very few big company has in India. Our simulator is very high fidelity model which can senses operator’s eye blink. We have two set of simulators namely Immersive Pro-3 (S-350) and Immersive (S-124) by which 650 ton class excavator operators, 240 ton dump truck operators and Electric drill operators shall be trained. We are providing training to all our operators.

Bucket Manufacturing

Thriveni has modified and fabricated the bucket size of Liebherr R996, from 26 cum to 35 cum departmentally.

Coal Briquetting

Coal Briquetting is a method by which high moisture and low calorific coal is converted into low moisture and high calorific coal. Thriveni is having a briquetting plant with area of 16 ha, capacity of 800 TPD and 1 MT storage capacity.

This plant will be commencing by 2018 end.
