Greetings, my friends: It’s often difficult to know just what the Apostle Paul was thinking, but the above verse got me thinking. Paul had credentials. Paul had a good resume. But Paul doesn’t want people impressed because of his name or his resume. He wants them to come to their own conclusions based on what they see for themselves. Does he embody the love of Christ? Is he faithful to the mission of Jesus? Do people hear him speak and feel inspired to find more deeply meaningful things to do with their life? In terms of touting his credentials, Paul simply says: I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me. Can you imagine a world with no boasting? Can you imagine a world with no slick marketing campaigns, no billboards, no celebrity endorsements? Can you imagine a world in which we are not affected by reputations, hearsay, or gossip? At some level, it might be a little scary. We are SO used to making decisions and value judgments based on what other people think. We pay more attention to paintings and sculptures that critics have baptized as “masterpieces.” We go to see movies that our friends liked. We eat at restaurants that come highly recommended. It might be a little scary to have a world with no second hand knowledge. But still, I’m intrigued. Have you ever met someone for the first time and they’ve said: “I’ve heard so much about you?” Hmm. If it was good, then you worry about living up to your own reputation. And if it wasn’t good, you wonder how much work you’ve got to do to prove yourself. What if we were all trained to make our own judgments, to come to our own conclusions, to base our reactions on what we see and hear for ourselves – not on someone else’s thoughts or experience? Paul, at least in this verse, seems not to want the advantages that can come with a good reputation. See for yourself. Come to your own conclusions. I refrain from [boasting] so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me. Peace & Blessings to you all, Pastor Jay

If I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me. – 2 Corinthians 12:6

Eastwood Kids Programs!

Our kids’ programs are gearing up for a new year! Our new Sunday School classes start on August 5! We’ve got a wonderful year planned and I’m so excited for our families at Eastwood!

In case you’re wondering what the difference is between Sunday School and Children’s Worship –

Sunday School is an hour -long program from 9:00-10:00 am that includes a Bible lesson and activities. It’s for all kids ages 3-10. We have two classes for ECC kids; the younger class is for 3-5 year olds and the older class is for kids in grades 1-5. Parents pick up either after their own Sunday School class or after the 9:00 am worship service. Children’s Worship is a shor ter program where we br ing kids ages 3-8 from the 10:30 am worship service after they hear the Children’s Sermon. Those kids have a brief Bible lesson, snack, and playtime until the service is over.

And of course, our wonderful Nursery is open from 8:45 am – 12:00 pm for children ages 6 weeks -2 years. Sometimes when a child turns 3 they’re not quite ready for Sunday School, and that’s okay. We can talk through what’s best for the family and child then and make a plan for their transition. Eastwood kids’ Sunday evening program – our Children’s Choirs - will be star ting on August 19. We’ll be doing lots of singing and playing instruments again this year. We’ll also incorporate some game playing into our hour together! We’ll be singing in the worship services about once a month, which is always a great opportunity for these young musicians to start to serve and be part of the worship in our church community.

We’re also hoping to continue Pastor Jay’s popular spiritual parenting program on some Sunday evenings through the fall. We’ll send out more information about this once they’re planned out!

Here’s the rundown for all of our Eastwood children’s programs:

Sunday mornings: 9:00-10:00 a.m. – Children’s Sunday School (Ages 3-5, Grades 1-5)

10:30 service (after Children’s Sermon) – Children’s Worship (Ages 3-8)

Sunday evenings: 5:00-6:00 p.m. – Preschool Choir and Children’s Choir

More information will be coming to Eastwood parents about particulars on all of our programs for kids this year. If you’re new and would like to be on our email lists, or if you have any questions, please contact Julie Aaron at [email protected].

Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

My husband and I serve in Morocco with the Comité d’Entraide Internationale - CEI (International Aid

Committee) of the Evangelical Protestant Church in Morocco, a Global Ministries partner. CEI’s work in-

cludes welcoming, assisting, and accompanying refugees and migrants coming mainly from Sub-Saharan

Africa hoping to pass through to Europe.

Some come because they don’t have enough money to survive where they were living. Many are first-born

males and their family’s well being is on their shoulders. The few women that I have encountered are

mothers, leaving their children in their home country to find a better life for their offspring in Europe. Some

are unaccompanied minors. Some are young women who were raped on their route to what they call Ca-

naan. All are risking their lives for a dream.

As part of our work, we visited a training class in a mechanic’s garage. The name of the garage is “Le Se-

cret du Zanzan” (Zanzan’s Secret). While we watched the work, I asked the owner about the meaning of

the name.

“Zanzan” means coming from afar to another land to establish oneself. He told me the story of two broth-

ers who travelled from Cameroon to the Ivory Coast. They left their land, their country, their families, and

everything they knew to go to a foreign land that would one day be their own. In his eyes, we could see

hope! I didn’t ask any more questions, but I think he was telling his own story. He now teaches others the

basics of mechanics and is investing and infusing life into future generations.

His story was inspiring and relevant to us. My husband and I are from Canada - another country, another

land, another continent, and another culture - yet we arrived here in Morocco and it felt like home.

Emmanuela Loccident and Fritz-Gerald Joseph currently serve with the Evangelical Protestant Church of Morocco. Their appointment is supported by Our Church’s Wider Mission, Disciples Mission Fund, and your special gifts.
