ABSTRACT

With the growing number of Facebook users in the Philippines,

Facebook page administrators introduced the new fad of anonymity

patterned from PostSecret.Com. Following the new trend, The

University of the Philippines Los Baños has also launched its own

anonymous confession Facebook page called The Elbi Files

containing an array of confessions ranging from sex confessions

to administration confrontations. These topics are often tainted

with stigmatization due to the hampering of the need to adhere to

societal norms. However, applying the SIDE Model (Lea et al 5),

through the aid of both visual and nominal anonymity, the

likelihood of conformity to societal norms decreases. Thus, the

focal point of this research is centered on the notion that The

Elbi Files unleashes the taboos of society particularly the UPLB

community through the service of anonymity. In the process of

research, these topics are revealed to be the taboos found in the

University: admission of violence, confrontations to the

administration, intra-organization conflicts, rants against

imposition of religion, angst against preference of degree

program, disembowelment on the notion of virginity and sex

confessions. These forbidden topics reflecting the taboos in

Philippine culture appeared to be repeatedly seen in the

confessions within The Elbi Files.Hernandez--------------------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTIONLike, type, share—three

simple steps can turn a simpleconfession into a widespreaddiffusion. From coffee shops, fast foods, malls, and even upto public modes oftransportation, the free useof Wi-Fi has now been handilyoffered, granting moreFilipinos the privilege toaccess the Internet. Accordingto The Philippine Starcolumnist, Lawrence Agcaoili, internet usage in thePhilippines had risen to 35%(The Philippine Star).Recently, in a surveyconducted by ComScore (qtd. inVisconti), Philippines baggedthe recognition of having the‘second highest Facebookpenetration rate’ with 92.2%users following Brazil with92.6%.

Nowadays, anonymity gainspopularity. Just last year, anonymous online confessionsites had a sudden boom, continually earning more pagelikes, thus, more readers.Patterned from The IItianInsider of the Mindanao StateUniversity, The University ofthe Philippines-Los Baños haslaunched its own anonymousconfession page, The ElbiFiles. Reaching thousands of

students with 22, 015 likes, this page brought up numeroussocietal issues inside thecampus that were written byanonymous students andadministered by anonymoususers as well.

From sex confessions toUP System rants, theseFacebook posts reflect theissues and concerns of the newgeneration of “Iskolar ngBayan”. Generally, the postsare divided into themes givenby the administrators weekly. However, some posts were stillpublished despite theincompatibility with thetheme, for these posts tacklethe currency of the situationwhich needs to be adheredimmediately. From criticizingagainst the notion of annualevaluation of students toprofessors to attacking thelaude-standard of becoming aninstructor, these publishedissues share the same core—toquestion the system thatgoverns the University.

In line with this, thispaper aims to identify thetaboos found in the Universityof the Philippines Los Bañosthrough analyzing the contentof the confessions rangingfrom sex confessions toadministration confrontations

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2

posted in The Elbi Files. These taboos include repressedopinions that are commonlyregarded with contempt by thenorms of society. Also, thispaper seeks to weigh thesocietal judgment placed aftera confession post.SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

Grounding the research inthe University of thePhilippines Los Baños, thispaper intends to cater onlythe forbidden themes forstudents of tertiary level. The societal context of thecreation of this paperdictates how these taboos aresuppressed and its need to beunleashed. Thus, the role ofUPLB as the setting ofconfessions plays a vital rolein assessing the confessions. However, this does not includethe confessions posted in thepage having insignificantamount of contribution to thetopic of this study.REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Secret confession sitesground their service toanonymity in order to offertheir users a window ofopportunity to expressthemselves freely. Theanonymity on the Internetenables people the opportunityto take on various personas to

express facets of themselveswithout fear of disapprovaland sanctions by those intheir real life social circle(Bargh et al 34). Proving theclaim of Collins and Berge(qtd. in Bernstein et al 51),anonymity elicitsparticipation seen in theincreasing number of secretconfession sites that hadspread from an onlineconfession website in theUnited States, PostSecret, tothe individual Facebook pagesof universities from differentcountries.

Another factor thatexplains this increasingnumber is that the majority ofInternet users are teenagers. As studied by Timothy Jay andMike Thelwall (qtd. in Jay156), swearing or tabooutterance occurs on all ageranges, but peaks on teenageyears. More and more teenageideas are repressed; thus, escalating the number of theseconfession sites which act asan outlet to release thesuppression of ideas.

Tracing the roots oftaboo back to the late 1800s,Wundt identified taboo as athing to be avoided due to its‘impurity’ (qtd. in Steiner128). This abstraction leads

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------3

to a validation which is inneed of culture verification.Since culture and society areindispensable, taboos areoutcomes of the societalaffirmation of which the‘good’ or the ‘evil’ is. Dueto the impurity of taboo, these concepts are oftenidentified as the ‘evil’force, making it forbidden, and are usually frowned uponby society. Often times, theseconcepts are not done in thepresence of ‘others’, for theinevitable presence of‘interhuman’ dictates that onevalues ‘others’ over his/herown will (Buber 2). These‘others’ may refer to theinstitutions of power such asreligion and media which playa significant role inidentifying and sanctioningthe taboos in society (Jay153).

Protection of anonymityis primarily used for tworeasons: (1) to decrease thesocial risks of tacklingunpopular perspectives andtopics considered as taboo, and (2) to assume differentpersonas apart from theiroffline identity (Kang et al2). These personas are oftenproducts of suppression whichcreate an avenue for a

formation of new self. SherryTurkle (qtd. in Bargh 34)mentioned that “the Internet,as a kind of sociallaboratory, explores thecurrently possessed, alternative inner conceptionsof self.” This type of self, the inner self, digs downone’s deepest and darkestideas which often receivederogatory response fromsociety. It is similar to CarlRoger’s conception of “trueself” (qtd. in Bargh 34). Asone finds an outlet of taboodefiance through the Internet, internet exploration oftenleads to the formation of trueself due to its concealment ofactual identity.THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUALFRAMEWORK

Social Identity andDeindividuation Effects Model, commonly known as the SIDEmodel, is a theory developedout of social identity theory(Tajfel & Turner) and selfcategorization theory (Turneret al). Reicher (qtd. in Leaet al 527) argued that SIDEModel aims to explaincognitive and strategiceffects of visibility andanonymity in both intragroupand intergroup contexts withina single theoretical

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4

framework. This theory hasbeen developed to counter thedeindividuation theory, butboth were grounded on the sameassumption thatdeindividuation enables theindividual to indulge in formsof behavior in which, whenalone, they would not indulge(Festinger 382).

This study is hooked onthe core of the SIDE Model asit expresses that anonymityreduces interpersonal basisfor social comparison, self-awareness and self-presentation (Lea et al 582).Confession sites often containthings which are hardlyuttered in everyday living dueto the liberty offered byanonymity. Self-awareness isdirectly proportional to self-monitoring; thus, the lesserself aware an individual is,the lesser he monitors hisbehavior as well.

SIDE Model also claimsthat anonymity decreases theattention of oneself to othersthrough removal ofinterpersonal cues—leading tothe removal of concern to bepositively evaluated by others(Lea et al 528). This claimwas used to strengthen thispaper to reflect the tabootopics in the society through

the content of the confessionposts. Using the theory, thebasis of the indifference tosocietal stigmatism reflectedin the posts is found in theabsence of the observation ofphysical cues, liberating anindividual to express thoughteasily.

Applying the strategicconsequences of SIDE Model, the variables that are neededto be considered are the in-group which consists of thecommunity within the Facebookpage of The Elbi Files and theout-group, holding more powerthan the in-group, consists ofthe norms of society. The in-group does not match with theout-group due to clash ofnorms. In The Elbi Files, thenorms to be followed areboundless. The people withinthe page can say anything theywant provided that they submittheir confessions to theGoogle drive of the page. However, if a person is notinformed with how thecommunity in The Elbi Filesworks, he/she will questionthe credibility of the pagedue to the tackling of taboosin society. Thus, in examiningthe comments after aconfession, an array of variedreactions occurs. Also,

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5

anonymity highlights thecapability of in-group toexpress his/her thoughtsfreely (Lea et al 13). Thisclaim supports the system usedby The Elbi Files with regardsto submission of confessionand page administration.METHODOLOGY

Fortifying the claim ofusing anonymity to defy taboosin society, the Facebook page“The Elbi Files” was examinedthrough discourse analysis. The Facebook posts, rangingfrom the highlighted postsfound in the Timeline of thepage gathered on the 15th dayof March, 2014, served as theartifacts analyzed, and thecomments were related to thereaction of public in suchforbidden confessions. Theseartifacts identified theresistance of proscribed normsin the society.

This paper used aqualitative data analysiswhere the artifacts weremeasured and organized intoseven types of taboos:violence, administrationconfrontations, intra-organization conflicts, angstagainst preference of degreeprogram, sex confessions, rants against imposition ofreligion, and disembowelment

on the idea of virginity. Ingauging the public opinion onthe confession, the thread onthe comment box was alsoexamined. These comments wereessential in determining theacceptance/rejection of ataboo confession in today’ssociety.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Verifying the claim thatThe Elbi Files serves as aninstrument to express taboothemes, the outcome of thecollection and analysis ofconfessions was bridgedthrough themes which center onexpression of angst againstthe normative of society. Intwenty analyzed confessions inthis research, the taboo themewhich got the highest numberwas confrontations against theadministration with sevenposts.

Directly attacking theadministration of the officeswithin the University, theseconfessions contained rantsagainst the university’sdormitory policies and fees, the system of picking laudeinstructors, scheme ofteachers’ evaluation, andabhorrence against professors(See Appendix A). Instead ofaddressing these concerns tothe right authority, these

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6

rants used the Elbi Files asan outlet to express dismay onthe current system.

Supporting to this claimis the discourse made by TheElbi Files as a separateentity to its like page whichcontains the stand of studentsregarding the rule inapplication process toorganization. This issuesparked when a confessioncontaining revulsion againstthe physical and verbal abusein the application process oforganizations in UPLB waspublished. The reactions tothis post were divided intotwo: hatred and concurrence. The reasons for their loathingtowards the confessors werebound by the concern that thegrowth of this issue attractsthe students not to join anorganization; hence, taintingthe reputation oforganizations which have beenbuilt for years to train thestudents for their futureworkplace. This concern hasbeen intensified by the postssupporting the distaste to‘pangungupal’ or ‘harshtreatment during application’,especially when graduatesthemselves posted theirinexperience to such treatmentin the workplace. This

discussion sprouted after theOffice of StudentAdministration released thememorandum of three-dayapplication process whichgarnered violent reactionsfrom students withorganizations (See Appendix B).

In relation to this, twoconfessions containingviolence was also observed. These confessions containedterror against people ofcontrol—people left unnamedfeared by people unnamed. These posts criticized theseen violence executed bygroup of people through amedium grounded with anonymity(See Appendix C). The risk toviolence was observed to reachits peak during childhood andadolescence (Federal Ministryfor Family Affairs, SeniorCitizens, Women and Youth 9).As explained by the audienceinhibition effect (qtd. inMadon), in a situation whereone’s safety is beingthreatened, the likelihood ofan individual to helptremendously decreases. Thisclaim was reflected on theconfessions relating toviolence. Assisting theintensity of the witnessedsituation, the release of atopic entailing fear becomes

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7

unleashed only when theservice of anonymity isoffered.

Setting the ground of theresearch in a university, tworelated taboo themes wereobserved: intra-organizationconflicts and dislike on theimposition of degree program. These themes are said to bepart of taboos, for theyutilized anonymity inarticulating their rantsagainst their orgmates andparents. As brothers andsisters in an organization, people looking from the bird’seye point of view expects thatthe people sharing the samegoal would jive together andhelp each ither in times ofneed. However, through TheElbi Files, the deficiency oforganizational unity shelledout, manipulating the chanceof anonymity of self to othersand anonymity of others toself (Lea et al 3). Theseconfessions all took advantageof nominal anonymity includingtheir college identity toconceal the organization frombeing identified (See AppendixD).

There were alsoconfessions revealing theirabhorrence to the impositionof degree program on them (See

Appendix E). In a science-oriented community, it isinevitable to seestigmatization on arts-relateddegree programs. The saidconfessions refelected thebinary opposition between artsand science—having arts-related degree programs beingoutshadowed by the science-related courses. Repressingthe notion of the unificationof arts and sciences leads tothe discrimination of minorityagainst the majority, in thiscase, arts receiving prejudicefrom ‘the’ science. Throughthe service of anonymityrendered by The Elbi Files, the battle of the few clashingwith the dominant becomespossible. Relating thetheoretical framework of thisresearch, SIDE Model explainsthat visual anonymity reducesthe basis for ‘interpersonalcomparison and self awareness’in order to achieve groupbelongingness and attraction(Lea et al 5). In achievinggreater group attraction, therelease of repressed thoughtsaccumulated in everydayinteraction becomes possible.

Church is considered tobe one of the most powerfulinstitutions in the Philippinesociety. In fact, the

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8

Philippines, the churchprojects a unified stand“affecting political, social, cultural vicissitudes ofFilipinos (Bautista 30)”.However, in The Elbi Files, the mantle protecting thispower seemed to be undressed.Containing dismay againstmembers of this culturalinstitution, The Elbi Fileshad published confessionswhich assail members with lackof manifestation through theiractions rooted from theirdetachment to their ownteaching, criticize the systemof a church-relatedorganization of having themembers pay cash in exchangeto accord of having a romanticrelationship, and assault themembers of the church and‘godly’ organizations whostigmatize people of noreligion and force people totheir bible study session. Oneconfession even suggested thatthe growing trend of biblicalsharing within the Universitymust be a ground forharassment and be punishedlawfully (See Appendix F). Insuch case, the reduction ofconcern to be evaluated andcritically judged by othersdue to the disalignment totraditional viewpoint of

cultural conformity becamevisible through the aid ofanonymity in confession (Leaet al 5).

As shaped by the culturalnormative of Philippinesociety where premarital sexreceives disgrace, people whohad experienced such oftengoes meek about this issue. However, due to the anonymityoffered in The Elbi Files, virginity and premarital sexconsistently persisted in thetopic of discussion amongcollege students. The issue ofvirginity tackled from peopleexpressing envy to thosepeople who practice sexwithout fear of societaljudgment to people revealingpregnancy (See Appendix G). Thisissue sparked the interest ofreaders which led to ananonymous poll started by TheElbi Files administratorsasking if the students had anintercourse already. Out of1166 respondents, 40.2%admitted that they hadexperienced sex already (SeeAppendix H). This alarmingpercentage opened an avenuefor the discussion of SexuallyTransmitted Diseases (STDs)such as AIDS.

Confessing actualexperience from the first-

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------9

person point of view, AIDSreceived a special attentionfrom both the administratorand the readers whicbrotheheven reached the attention ofthe authorities. There werethree highlighted AIDSconfessions, each admittingtheir disease and informingthe public with thefeasibility of AIDS regardlessof age. These confessions wereborn after the increase in sexconfessions; however, theconfessors themselves offeredvaried attitude towards thisissue—some expressed theirregrets and warned the publicto stop making out, whileothers offered positiveattitude on such issue andwarned the public of thepossibility of viraldispersion. The said issueeven alarmed the UPLB GenderCenter summoning the confessorwith the pseudonym SunCityGirlto submit himself/herself tothe authority for appropriateaction to make. In the threadcontaining the search for thereal identity of SunCityGirl, anarray of reactions wasunleashed. Through the commentbox of the said thread, somereaders had violent reactiontowards the search for thesaid confessor, for the reason

of hampering his/her libertyto express without judgmentrendered in an anonymousconfession page. However, somereaders were convinced thatthis issue must be addressedand sent to authority—instigating the normative ofoutside world to the normsfollowed within the Facebookpage of The Elbi Files. Inthis variety of reactions, theimposition of cultural normsof Philippine society acts asthe normative of real world towhich the behavioralexpectation of majority isanchored on. Applying SIDEModel (Lea et al 13), thisexternal normative clasheswith the internal normative ofliberty in nominal anonymitydominating the said Facebookpage.

Concealing their realidentities through pseudonyms, two confessions stirred theattention of the viewers asseen in the comments added byreaders. Having sex with anauthority, or in this case, with a professor is highlydegraded by the mores ofsociety. Actually, it wasstated in Republic Act 7877,or commonly known as the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995,

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------10

Section 3 (House ofRepresentatives) that:

“Work, education ortraining-relatedsexual harassment iscommitted by anemployer, employee, manager, supervisor, agent of theemployer, teacher, instructor, professor, coach, trainor, or anyother person who, having authority, influence or moralascendancy overanother in a work ortraining oreducationenvironment, demands, requests orotherwise requiresany sexual favorfrom the other, regardless ofwhether the demand, request orrequirement forsubmission isaccepted by theobject of said Act.”

Thus, professor-studentrelationship is punishable bylaw. However, through The ElbiFiles, the bending of this lawsurfaced. A confession wasposted containing the

admission of a student havingsex with the professor to acehis/her major subject (SeeAppendix I). Similar to this, aconfession reflected an affairinvolving a politician and astudent (See Appendix J). In thePhilippine context, adulteryprotrudes demoralization.Actually, Republic Act 9292 orcommonly known as An ActDefining Sexual Infidelity(qtd. in Yahoo! NewsPhilippines) states thatadultery or sexual infidelitybecomes a ground for legalseparation entailing thepunishment of being jailed fora maximum of six years. Thesaid two confessions arecommon in one aspect: affairwith an authority. However, they differ in the context inwhich they belong to—for theformer, within the walls ofUniversity, and the latter, ina wider scope involving apublic servant. Theseconfessors took advantage ofthe liberty of expressionoffered in The Elbi Filesusing the claim of anonymityas a tool to avoid theexperience of rejectionthrough reduction of the needto norms conformity (Lea et al15).CONCLUSION

Hernandez-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------11

Combining these points,it is conclusive that The ElbiFiles offers an avenue toliberate an individual fromsocietal stigmatizationthrough the combination ofnominal and visual anonymityreflected on the service ofcomputer-mediated confessioninvolving the disembowelmentof societal norms. The studyalso highlighted the taboosfound within the Universitynamely: admission of violence, confrontations to theadministration, intra-organization conflicts, rantsagainst imposition ofreligion, angst againstpreference of degree program, disembowelment of the notionof virginity and sexconfessions, which are alsomirroring the taboos in thePhilippine culture. It isimportant to note that theresearch had explored the aidof anonymity with itscorresponding effects to theconformity of an individual totraditional norms of theirculture. To sum up the resultsof the study, the likelihoodof an individual to succumb tothese norms decreased when thenotion of anonymity waspresented—revealing thecultural taboos found in a

specific group of peoplesharing a common ground. Inthe focal point of this study, the assumption that The ElbiFiles was utilized by studentsor even professors residing inthe University to confessideas and situations that areforbidden in usual everydayconversation due to thehampering of societal norms onits blatant admission.

The researcher proposesthat this study can beextended if the administratorsas well would be interviewedon how the selection ofpublished confessions wasmade. Also, this study can befurthered if the relationshipbetween the time interval ofthe confession and itspublication on the Facebookpage was determined andstudied. The relation ofanonymity and tabooconfessions can also beexplored through examinationof social networking sitesgrounded on anonymous askingof questions such ashttp://www.ask.fm orhttp://www. formspring.me anddifferentiate its effects onthe aid of anonymity toconfession sites.

A. Administration confrontations1. Buhay Men's dorm.

Dati, may silent hour.

2. Bakit ganun?

Yung totoo? Wow. Dahil isang oras pabago yung next classnamin, pumayag kami nagawin niya yung gustoniya samin. Hehe.So ayon, nagshare siya ngGospel, tinanggap ko ulitfor the nth time angDiyos para sa ikaliligtasng kaluluwa namin mula sa"lawa ng kumukulongasupre", all the usualstuff, tapos nagdasal

kaming tatlo.

Ayon. Pakiramdam konaharass ako nung kuya sapagyayaya niyang mag-bible study at wala manlang akong nagawa nungpanahon na yon.
