好幾代的小朋友都以為「傻豹」是個卡通人物，手腳柔韌，走起路來趾高氣揚，一臉滿不在乎的樣子，又經常含着長長的煙嘴抽煙，行徑千奇百怪 ──「傻豹」一句話也不說，所思所感全部依賴配樂表達。可是經歷過60年代的人卻會記得，「傻豹」其實是一枚鑽石的名字──那是一系列電影的軸心，講述鑽石被竊、失而復得的故事。劇情本身錯綜複雜，電影也非常惹笑，由演技精湛的彼得斯拉飾演庸碌無能的烏龍幫辦克羅素，華裔演員郭弼飾演活力充沛的助手嘉杜。原著電影中也確實有卡通傻豹的蹤影──傻豹雖然只在片頭出現，卻與相關配樂渾然一體，因此傻豹成了電視節目主角時，也繼續沿用同一配樂。其實在大家眼中，無論傻豹是有趣的卡通或是滑稽的電影，大家都會馬上想起「傻豹主題」── 主題1963年由意裔美籍作曲家曼西尼（1924-1994）所作，既帶有軟爵士樂氣息，又瀰漫著悠閒慵懶的氣氛，堪稱一絕。

《圖畫展覽會》原是一套鋼琴組曲（1886），出自俄羅斯作曲家穆索斯基（1839-1881）手筆，但現在最常見的卻是今天演出的版本──也就是法國作曲家拉威爾（1875-1937）改編的管弦樂版。展覽會內全是作曲家的友人維托‧赫特曼的作品，樂曲則描繪觀者在畫廊裡，邊走邊觀賞

Several generations of children have been brought up to believe that the Pink Panther is an elastic-limbed cartoon character who struts around nonchalantly, often carrying a cigarette in a long holder, getting into all sorts of improbable situations. He says nothing, his thoughts and feelings are expressed through the musical score which accompanies the cartoon. Those of us with memories stretching back to the 1960s will know that the Pink Panther was actually a diamond, the complex theft (and return) of which formed the basis of a series of hilarious movies starring the brilliant Peter Sellers as the incompetent Inspector Clouseau and Burt Kwouk as his impossibly dynamic Chinese sidekick, Cato. The cartoon panther did appear in the original movies, but only in the title sequence where it became so closely associated with the music that when it became the centrepiece of its own TV series, the music went with it. Whether the Pink Panther for you is an amusing cartoon or an hilarious movie, the name immediately summons up a wonderfully laid-back, soft-jazz theme composed in 1963 by the Italian-American composer, Henry Mancini (1924-1994).

Pictures at an Exhibition was originally a suite of piano pieces composed in 1886 by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) – today it is more usually heard in this version for orchestra made by the French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). It sets out to portray

someone walking around an art gallery looking at various pictures and sculptures created by the composer’s friend, Victor Hartmann. Today we hear two of Mussorgsky’s musical impressions of those pictures, the first being “Gnomus”. This was a drawing of an ornamental set of nutcrackers designed in the shape of a grotesque gnome-like doll. Listen out for the ugly, growling music (representing the gnome) and the sudden bursts of activity and equally abrupt pauses as the nutcrackers are squeezed to break the shells.

OSCAR WINNER HANS ZIMMER Now we come to the first of our composers who is not dead! Hans Zimmer (b. 1957) turned 60 last year and is still highly active as a composer for film and television. Zimmer was born in Frankfurt and started his musical life as a member of a pop group called “The Buggles” who are remembered, if at all, for one international hit, Video Killed the Radio Star, which had the distinction of being the first music video ever to be shown on MTV. He moved to London and joined up with the British film music composer, Stanley Myers, and has gone on to evolve a style of film-music composition which integrates electronic and traditional instruments. His first real success in the film industry was his score for Rain Man, released in 1988 and which won Zimmer his first Oscar Nomination. The following year his score for Driving Miss Daisy was also nominated and in 1990 his score for The Lion King won the Oscar for Best Score. To date Zimmer has composed over 150 film scores, one of his most recent successes being for the movie franchise Sherlock Holmes. We hear one extract from his score for the original 2009 movie and three from its 2011 sequel, A Game of Shadows. First comes the menacing “Discombobulate” followed by “The Mycroft Suite”, depicting Holmes’ famously intelligent brother, Mycroft. Next up is the spectacular music depicting a

scene in a dark forest, “Zu viele Füchse für euch Hänsel” (“Too many foxes for you, Hansel?”) and the final “The End?”, which revisits the music of the opening number.

“Babi-Yaga (The Hut on Fowl’s Legs)” is another of the Pictures at an Exhibition. Hartmann’s original picture on display at the exhibition was of a clock shaped like a hut on legs. Mussorgsky, however, conveyed this in music as a frantic, demonic chase featuring the famous evil witch from Russian folklore, Babi-Yaga, while all the time the clock seems to be ticking away ominously in the background.

THE LEGENDARY SHERLOCK HOLMES The famous detective Sherlock Holmes, created in the 1880s by Arthur Conan-Doyle and featuring the darker side of criminal life in Victorian London, has long fascinated film and television directors. In addition to the famous 2009/11 movies for which Hans Zimmer wrote the score, another recent version (called simply Sherlock) has been appearing on BBC Television since 2010, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and with music by David Arnold (b.1962) and Michael Price. So highly has their score been regarded that it has won a British Academy Television Award for Best Original Television Music and in both 2010 and 2011 was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score).

DECOMPOSING COMPOSER Finally to the headline work of our concert. Nathaniel Stookey (b. 1970) was born in San Francisco and he was just 17 years old when the city’s Symphony Orchestra commissioned him to write a new work for them. He spent some time in the UK before returning to America, and

in 2006 the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra again commissioned a new work from him, this time designed as a guide to the instruments of the orchestra led by a narrator. The story about murder, mystery and detective work in a symphony orchestra written by Lemony Snicket and called The Composer is Dead was chosen as the basis of this new work. In the story a composer is found dead (or “decomposing”) and an inspector called in to solve the mystery. He interviews each section of the orchestra, who profess their innocence by claiming to have been doing something else at the time. He eventually solves the mystery by bringing in the cases of many other dead composers, including Beethoven, Schubert, Berlioz, Wagner, Mahler and Tchaikovsky.

The Composer is Dead was first presented on 8 July 2006 by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edwin Outwater with Lemony Snicket narrating. Stookey has written his own introduction for the work: “I hope I’m not giving away too much by saying that The Composer is Dead ends with a funeral march... Classical composers have always had a preoccupation with death, partly because we are human, like you, partly because we grapple with the mysteries of the universe, partly because death sells records and always has... Someday you'll be able to tell your grandchildren that you appreciated a living composer before that living composer became, like all composers, dead.”

2006年7月8日，樂曲由三藩市交響樂團首演，歐威特指揮，史尼杰親自擔任旁述。史圖基在親撰的樂曲介紹中寫道：「《作曲家已死》最後以葬禮進行曲作結 ── 我這麼說，希望不會劇透太多⋯⋯古典作曲家對『死亡』這個題材往往情有獨鍾，一來因為大家都是人，就像你和我；二來因為大家都在努力應付宇宙中的種種奧秘；三來因為這種題材會令唱片銷量好些，過去也確實如是⋯⋯那麼大家有天就可以告訴孫兒，自己欣賞過一個活生生的作曲家──趁他還未作古，還未步所有其他作曲家後塵之前，就已經欣賞過。」

雷夫 CHRISTIAN REIF指揮 Conductor

German-born Christian Reif is Resident Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. He started in the 2016/17 season following two years in Miami as Conducting Fellow with the New World Symphony, working closely with Michael Tilson Thomas.

In the 2018/19 season Reif will conduct Prokofiev’s Symphony no. 5 and the world premiere of Andrew Norman’s Cello Concerto with Johannes Moser as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, and a programme which includes works by Britten, Shostakovich and Haydn with the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. He makes his debuts with the Omaha Symphony and the HK Phil, and returns to work with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, Berkeley Symphony and San Francisco Conservatory. He will also conduct a production of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci at Opera San Jose and a new chamber version of John Adams’ El Niño with the American Modern Opera Company.

As part of his duties as Resident Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, Reif regularly conducts the orchestra in performances including Hansel and Gretel, an Oktoberfest concert and two Soundbox shows – the orchestra’s successful cutting-edge late-night series. Previous performance highlights include the Juilliard Orchestra, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, Meiningen Court Orchestra, Georgian Chamber Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Soloists and the Munich Chamber Opera in performances of Mozart’s La finta semplice.

American baritone, Eric Monson, has been performing around the world for over 25 years. He has been fortunate to work with several Grammy and Tony award winners throughout his performance career and maintains a steady schedule of performing, conducting, arranging vocal charts and teaching. His a cappella group, Water Street Junction, won the first-ever International Collegiate Barbershop Quartet competition in 1992. Afterwards, Monson went on to perform for a season at Europe’s largest revue theatre, the Friedrichstadtpalast, in Berlin, Germany. In 1998, after several years of producing choir festivals at Disney parks and in cities around the world, Monson decided to form Metro Vocal Group. The group has been performing around the world ever since, receiving over 25 million views on various online platforms, and are known for their ability to sing in both Cantonese and Mandarin. This has included multiple performances on Hunan TV and CCTV, at Tokyo and Hong Kong Disney, and collaborations with such artists as G.E.M., Hacken Lee and Hanjin, to name a few.

As an individual performer, Monson has combined his Disney talents with his love of children, narrating children’s symphonies with the HK Phil. In 2008, Monson started his own company, the American Vocal Studio in Hong Kong, to provide students with vocal and a cappella training.

香港管弦樂團（港樂）被喻為亞洲最前列的古典管弦樂團之一。在為期44週的樂季中，樂團共演出超過150場音樂會，把音樂帶給超過20萬名觀眾。

梵志登是現今國際古典樂壇最炙手可熱的指揮之一，他自2012/13樂季正式擔任港樂音樂總監一職，至少直到2022年。此外，由2018/19樂季開始，梵志登大師正式成為紐約愛樂第26位音樂總監。

余隆由2015/16樂季開始被委任為首席客席指揮。

繼歐洲巡演（包括在維也納著名的金色大廳的演出及錄影）取得成功後，港樂在中國內地多個城市展開巡演。為慶祝香港特區成立20週年，香港經濟貿易辦事處資助港樂，於2017年四至五月前赴首爾、大阪、新加坡、墨爾本和悉尼歌劇院巡演。

梵志登帶領樂團、合唱團與一眾頂尖歌唱家，於2018年1月完成了歷時四年的華格納巨著《指環》四部曲的歌劇音樂會。這四年的浩瀚旅程由拿索斯現場錄音，非凡的演出贏得了本地和海外觀眾、樂評的讚譽。《指環》第四部曲──《諸神的黃昏》的錄音將於2018年年底發行。

近年和港樂合作過的指揮家和演奏家包括：阿殊堅納西、貝爾、杜托華、艾遜巴赫、葛納、侯夫、郎朗、馬友友、寧峰、王羽佳等。

THE HONG KONG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (HK Phil) is recognised as Asia’s foremost classical orchestra. Presenting more than 150 concerts over a 44-week season, the HK Phil attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually.

Jaap van Zweden, one of today’s most sought-after conductors, has been the orchestra’s Music Director since the 2012/13 concert season, a position he will continue to hold until at least 2022. Maestro van Zweden is the 26th Music Director of the New York Philharmonic from the 2018/19 season.

Yu Long has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor since 2015/16 season.

Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Jaap van Zweden, the HK Phil has attained new heights of artistic excellence, garnering international critical acclaim.

Following on from the success of the European tour, which included a filmed concert from Vienna’s famous Musikverein, the HK Phil has toured extensively within mainland China. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, and with support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices, the orchestra performed in Seoul, Osaka, Singapore, Melbourne and at the Sydney Opera House between April and May 2017.

Jaap, the HK Phil, a superb cast of soloists and a chorus successfully completed an epic four-year journey through Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” in January 2018. The concert performances and live Naxos recordings have been enthusiastically received by audiences and praised by critics at home and abroad. The recording of Götterdämmerung will be released towards the end of 2018.

港樂積極推廣華裔作曲家的作品，除了委約新作，更已灌錄由作曲家譚盾和盛宗亮親自指揮其作品的唱片，由拿索斯唱片發行。此外，港樂的教育及社區推廣計劃一向致力將音樂帶到學校、醫院、戶外等不同場所，每年讓數以萬計兒童和家庭受惠。

太古集團自2006年起成為港樂的首席贊助，也是本團歷來最大的企業贊助。太古集團透過支持港樂，積極推廣藝術活動，在藝術水平上精益求精，並推動本地的文化參與和發展，以鞏固香港的國際大都會美譽。

Conductors and soloists who have recently performed with the orchestra include Vladimir Ashkenazy, Joshua Bell, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Matthias Goerne, Stephen Hough, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Ning Feng and Yuja Wang.

The HK Phil promotes the work of Hong Kong and Chinese composers through an active commissioning programme, and has released recordings on the Naxos label featuring Tan Dun and Bright Sheng, each conducting their own compositions. Its acclaimed education and community engagement programmes in schools, hospitals and outdoor spaces, bring music into the hearts of tens of thousands of children and families every year.

The Swire Group has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since 2006. Through this sponsorship, which is the largest in the orchestra’s history, Swire endeavours to promote artistic excellence, foster access to classical music, and stimulate cultural participation in Hong Kong, as well as to enhance Hong Kong’s reputation as one of the great cities of the world.

Thanks to a significant subsidy from the Hong Kong Government and long-term funding from Principal Patron Swire, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and other supporters, the HK Phil now boasts a full-time annual schedule of core classical repertoire and innovative popular programming, extensive education and community programmes, and collaborations with, amongst others, Opera Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Originally called the Sino-British Orchestra, it was renamed the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 1957 and became fully professional in 1974. The HK Phil is a registered charitable organisation.

大音樂家小故事系列LITTLE STORIES OF GREAT COMPOSERS

1996年至2000年間，我們推出了「大音樂家小故事」系列，邀得著名兒童文學作家周蜜蜜為五位偉大作曲家：莫扎特、貝多芬、海頓、巴赫、舒伯特，分別撰寫生平故事；插圖和封面則由鄧美心和郭靜宜繪畫。此故事圖書系列輔以CD發行。

From 1996 to 2000 the HK Phil launched a series of “Little Stories of Great Composers” by inviting renowned children’s author Mimi Zhou to write interesting biographical stories of five great composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Bach and Schubert. Illustrations and covers by Maxim Tang and Kwok Ching-yee. The series was released with respective CDs.

展覽已於2018年9月2日圓滿結束。The story books and CDs

were displayed at the “Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra
