PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT

1980 TENNESSEAN

The 1980 edition of the TENNESSEAN records a landmark year in thehistory of Tennessee State University. This year marks the initiation of thecourt ordered merger with the University of Tennessee at Nashville.

The merging of these two institutions with diverse histories, racialcompositions and educational thrusts is significant as adevelopment of highereducation in America. It merges the rich traditions of both institutions andcreates for the public a major comprehensive urban university. We have achallenge tobridge the accomplishments ofthe past, to innovate for the futureand to design a campus environment that will continue the University's legacyofgreatness. If wecan accomplish these objectives, wecanbuild a TSU thatwill continue to justify pride by itsproducts and which will be a symbol thatin this state and in the nation all people can learn, live and work together inaharmonious and healthy environment.

As we move the institution into the 80's, I believe there are bright promisesand great challenges ahead. It will take a special effort to merge thedifferences of the past to make them a oneness. How successful we are willdetermine whether the American dream can become a reality for all thosewho seek to share in its fruits and benefits.

The staff of the TENNESSEAN have included in these pages a collage ofpictures recording for posterity the activities and events of the past year.Throughout this yearbook is the spirit and the scope of an institution whichwas blueprinted by this great American idea in higher education.

I congratulate the editors and staff hu the splendid job they have done onthis publication.

PRESIDENT

The 1979-80 academic year has been thehighlight of my educational career. To havehad the opportunity of serving as president ofthe Student Government Association of

Tennessee State University in the first year ofthe merger has indeed been a challenge for meand the entire membership of the StudentGovernment Association.

It is hard at this point to Judge how effectivethe 1979-80 S.G.A. Administration has been. However, I do hope that as the months andyears pass, students will reflect back on the1979-80 S.G.A. Administration with goodfeelings.

I have enjoyed serving my feUow studentsand Tennessee State University.

j.-,

:/ • pr, Walter Sbrolher Davis, under whose 25 year leadership at Tennessee S'®*®Udversity achieved land grant status and full accreditation, died October 17,1979,in Na^ville, TN, after an extended illness.

Dr. Davis, a native Mississippian, started his association with the state ofTennessee and Tennessee A & I State College in the late 1920's as a student ofagriculture. During his undergraduate days, he was a star football and baseballplayer, From 1933 until 1936, he was Tennessee State s football coach and histeams become a succession ofgreatness at the institution. However, his first lovewas agriculture and after receiving his doctorate, he continued teaching in thatdivision until he was named president.

Dr. Davis became the second president ofTennessee Agricultural and IndustrialState College in 1943. During his administration the institution achieveduniversity status and expanded to include a Graduate School, School ofArts andSciences, School of Education and School of Engineering. In 1958, Davis's interestin agriculture cameto fruition with the establishment of the School ofAgricultureand Home Economics.

His administration laid the foundation for "TSU's Touch of Greatness". In 1958,the institution was also fully accredited by the Southern Association of Collegesand Schools and was designated a Land Grant University.

Dr. Davis was the recipient of a number of honors and awards throughout hiseducational career. But his greatest thrill came a few months after he retired in1968 when he saw his dream fulfilled—the institution become Tennessee StateUniversity.

When Dr. Davis became president of the University in 1943, there were 1100students; when he retired in 1968 there were 6,000 students. Over 70% of Aebuildings on TSU's campus were erected under his administration. The legacy leftby Dr. Davis', "Touch of Greatness," gives the yearbook staff their reason for"Putting It All TogeAer" for TSU in 1980.

What Is It All About My Sister?

What is it all about my sister, when allis told,

This constant striving for fame or gold..The fleeting joys, the bitter tears. We are only here a few short years.Nothing our own but the silent past.Loving or hating, nothing can last!

What is it all about my sisterIt's just a passing from day to day,A cross for me and a cross for you.Ours seem heavy, while others seem

light. But God in the end makes all things

right! He tempers the wind with such loving

care.

He knows the burdens each of us canbear.

He changes life's grey into heavenlygold.

And that is all when all is told! mysister.

Brief HistoryOn July 1. 1979, Tennessee State

The main campus opened its doors onJune 12. 1912. It became a full fledged LandGrant University in 1958 with the establishment of 5 schools-Agriculture and HomeEconomics, Arts and Sciences, Education,Engineering and the Graduate School. TheSchool of Allied Health Professions wasauthorized in 1974 and theSchool of Business wasauthorized in 1976.

The downtown campusopened its doors in 1971 to meetthe needs for a fully functionalevening University. It offeredmany educational opportunitiesfor the working adult including anursing and MBA program. Some of the other programsdeveloped by the downtowncampus include a wide variety ofpublic and continuing education activities.

As the everyday functionssociety become moreof

intricate, the need for thisadditional education increases. For some, an undergraduatedegree will serve their purpose, for others the Masters degreewill be the answer and still forothers, the doctoral degree will be necessary

THE METER

TheMETER celebrated its 30th anniversary this year since its founding on April 21,1950, by Samuel Yettes.

As the oRicial student newspaper, whose motto is "ameasure of student opinion," the1979-80 edition of the METER reached a new horizon.

Under the editorship ofShelton R. Tucker, the METER became a weekly newspaperand during this same period produced a record setting 22 editions. This year's METER staff, which consisted of 30 members, proved to be one of thewst creative staffsin TSU's history. Through such features as: Dear Debbie, Students•e Talking About, Sports-Players of the Week, JUST FOR LAUGHS, Tiger Pin-Up,

and special columns such as Essien's Outlook and Rod Spann's Album Review, theMETER not only proved to be informative but provided enjoyable reading material.

The 1979-80 edition of the METER established itself as an integral part of TSU aswell as the Nashville community in "Putting It All Together."

LETTER FROM THE STAFF

Time brings about change and Tennessee State University has undergone changes as well. One of the biggest changes was that of the TSU-UTN merger. Another change that not onlyaffected TSU, but the Nation as well was the Iranian Crisis.

Other changes at TSU—The University is in the process of finishing its new ConvocationCenter. It should be open for useduring the fall of 1980. The 1980 class will be the first class tograduate after the merger ofTSU-UTN. When the merger came to TSU, so did a new processofregistering for classes. Thestudents said goodbye to thedays ofrunning from place to, placelooking for a seat card for a particular class.

Along with these changes came thestaff of the 1980 TENNESSEAN. Like any othergroupor organization, we start^ with many butended up with asmaller number of students. ThisTennessean holds not only memories ofdays gone by but days to come. For thestaff it holdssuccess, stress, pain, and happiness of the past, present and future. As you flip through thesepages years from now, we hope the memories you once shared still remain.

The 1980 Staff would like to thank each and everyone who helped with this book, especiallyouradvisor, Mrs. Mary Vowels, (we love you), and John Crow who devoted lots and lots andlots of his time to taking and developing pictures. And thanks to the whole TSU Familybecause YOU are the TENNESSEAN.

In Memory of

Tliais Lavonne Baccus 1958-1976

The world used to disturb me,I always felt different and unclaimed.

I worried about how people felt about meand what kind of personal impression I wasgiving.

But now I don't

I worry about how I feel towards people, andbeing accepted makes no difference now, because you see ... Tm only visiting here, waiting for the day I move on to my realhome.

Thais LaVonne Baccus
