IN THIS ISSUE

| 3March/April 2017/5777 Vol. 109, No. 3 www.templedehirschsinai.org

Dear Friends,As you can undoubtedly tell from the cover photo and many articles, the theme for this issue of Tidings is

“blossoming” or “blooming” – because that’s exactly what Temple is doing this spring! Our schools continue to attract families to Temple; our programs are growing in both number and depth; and we continue to welcome new members each month. As the board president, it is a great feeling to see so many faces, both new and old, each time I come to Temple.Earlier this month, I had the good fortune to accompany Rabbis Weiner and Meyer on a trip to Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles to interview candidates for Assistant Rabbi. What a great experience! To meet these young, not-quite-yet rabbis, full of enthusiasm for Jewish life and learning, was inspiring. And I felt very fortunate to be representing Temple there. Our Rabbis are held in very high esteem by their colleagues, and obviously Rabbi Weiner is sought as a mentor. We are most fortunate. The process of hiring a new rabbi is a fast one and we should know by mid-March what offer we will extend.

Our schools and children continue to blossom as well. We would love your help in getting the word out about our preschool expansion in the fall, when we will be offering a full-time option for the first time! But first – I hope you are planning to join us at our gala auction to celebrate 25 years of Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool on May 20! (And, of course, on April 30, Deli Night!)I’m sure that there are more rainy and perhaps snowy days before winter leaves us entirely, but here at Temple it’s always warm and welcoming. I look forward to seeing you.Warmest regards,

Don LoebTDHS Board President

LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT

Welcoming Elijahby Rabbi Aaron C. Meyer,Associate Rabbi

“Look really closely. If you have been good this year, you will be able to see when Elijah drinks from his cup!” With the same mirth in his eyes other grandfathers might have had when setting out cookies for Santa Claus, my grandfather would bang his knee into the table to conclude our Passover Seder. Ripples appeared in the wine glass as the door was opened and we were sure that we could see Elijah the Prophet, herald of the messianic times, sneaking a quick sip!

With age and awareness came a better understanding of the mechanics of this moment, though it has never lost its wonder. The simplicity of the act — opening the door for Elijah — belies its intricacy and its centrality to the Jewish religious experience. Perhaps I might explain.

Part one. Three glasses of wine at Passover would be simply boring and unsatisfying. Five glasses would certainly lead to inebriation and frivolity.

In true Goldilocks fashion, then, the rabbis of the Mishnah settled on four cups of wine at our Passover Seder. Perhaps drawing their inspiration from the Greek Symposium (at which four glasses was deemed “just right”) and the four promises God made to the ancient Hebrews in Exodus 6:6-7, the consumption of wine is both an eminently recognizable and enjoyable part of the Seder. An astute reader of this text notices, however, that there are actually five promises made by God: “I will take you out of Egypt,” God promises (1). “I will save you (2); I will redeem you (3); I will take you as a people (4) and I will be your God (5).” The custom soon developed to pour five glasses of wine, recalling these promises, even though we only drink four. What should we do with the fifth cup?

Part two. “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” It is said of Rav Huna, an amora quoted in the Babylonian Talmud, that during meal times he left open the doors of his house that all who were hungry might join him. We open our festive meal in the same way, encouraging others to share our Passover lamb (none of which could remain overnight). When the Jewish community lived in tolerant times or isolated enclaves, this practice enabled our highest values to be served, for “when a poor

man knocks on your door, the Holy One attends him at his right hand” (Leviticus Rabah).

When the Jewish community was imperiled during Crusades and programs, this practice became a mortal threat to life and limb. It is a religious obligation to open our doors, but we can’t do so for an extended period of time. What should we do with this ritual?

Historians suggest the welcoming Elijah to our

Seder was an elegant, innovative solution capable of solving both of these problems at once. We open our doors to God’s promise of redemption

and a fifth cup of wine, symbolically

welcoming to our Seder one who is the messenger of

a promised time. That time, in turn, can only be ushered in through our human actions. Inviting Elijah into our homes thus becomes the test for core competency after an intensive elective on our people’s narrative history. If we have internalized the sacred and eternal message of Passover, to remember that we were strangers in Egypt and God’s agents to alleviate the suffering of the poor and the downtrodden, we must act accordingly in every subsequent day and age.

May we each see Elijah sip from the fifth cup of wine this year, having done and always doing our part to stand for justice. Chag Peisach Sameiach!

Rabbi Aaron C. Meyer

doors to God’s promise of redemption and a fifth cup of wine,

symbolically welcoming to our Seder one who is the messenger of a promised time. That time, in turn, can only be ushered in

Introducing Shabbat Junior.by Sarah Sklare, Young Families Engagement Coordinator

Temple has an incredible array of worship opportunities, and we’re thrilled to announce one more – Shabbat Junior! Shabbat Junior will be the Shabbat service on the third Friday of each month at our Bellevue campus, and will be geared towards families with children in elementary school and younger. First, we’ll enjoy an extended preneg with kid-friendly food and activities, then head into the sanctuary for a service full of singing, storytelling, movement, and fun. Although the service will be primarily focused on the younger crowd, everyone is, of course, welcome. We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Shabbat family-style!

In addition to Shabbat Junior, the Village has oodles of other activities going on this spring. Our partnership with PEPS is up and running – we still have a few spaces available in the current group, so if you’re interested in joining please contact [email protected] ASAP! We’ll also have groups in the summer and fall, so if you’re expecting and interested in the PEPS experience through a Jewish lens contact Sarah to get on the list!

Plus, save the date for the Purim Carnival, Community Seder, and an Earth Day project!

NEWFULL TIME OPTIONS

The new growth of spring is evident in our children and programs at Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool. Kids are thriving in our variety of activities and the school is preparing to offer full-time care this fall.

On Grandparents’ Day, children and relatives planted parsley together in our garden, which we plan to use during our Family Passover Seder on April 7, led by Rabbi Meyer. The sounds of young voices singing in both English and Hebrew fill our classrooms during music class, often accompanied by the children’s dancing and instruments. In movement class, led by Ms. Charmin Wray of Backstage Dance Studio, children are gaining an understanding of spatial awareness by making shapes with their bodies.

And during Tot Shabbat each Friday, there’s a closeness and connection among the children, families, rabbis and JRM staff that is hard to describe.

Understanding of Jewish ideas is growing as well, as children not only celebrate Jewish holidays and practice Hebrew words, but also practice values of being kind to each other and kind to our earth. Students have now experienced tzedakah on a deeper level, having gone on a walking field trip to purchase dental items for Temple’s Women’s Homeless Shelter using the money they collected.

But what is blooming most are our relationships. I can think of several examples of parents who were

friends when they attended JRM Preschool as kids, and they now bring their children, whose own lifelong friendships may well be budding at JRM Preschool.

Whether you have a child in our program or not, thank you to all who support this foundational Jewish education in our community.

Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool is now accepting applications for fall 2017. Full-time and part-time options are available, and families enrolling in the new full-time program will be granted full Temple membership. Please contact Shannon Solomon, Early Childhood Education Director, at [email protected] or 425.559.2571 for an application or to schedule a tour.

Join us for dinner accompanied by a stimulating auction in support of Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool, which celebrates its 25th year of providing an outstanding early childhood education enriched by Jewish values. This year, experience the auction in our own home, as we gather in Temple’s Seattle Jaffe Room at 6:00 PM on Saturday, May 20.“Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool has touched the lives of so many in our community,” said Board Member Elizabeth Goertzel, who is the Preschool Committee Chair and Auction Chair. Elizabeth notes that over the past 25 years, over 500 families and approximately 1,000 kids have gone through Temple’s early childhood education program. “Jewish education and educating our children is something that is important to every member of our community, not just those with kids in the current program,” Elizabeth notes. We hope that you will join us in celebrating the tremendous impact that Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool has had on our community, as well as it’s blossoming future as the school prepares to offer its first full-day programs this fall. Invitations will be sent out in March, and we hope everyone will take advantage of the early-bird RSVP rate and reply by May 5th.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Obtaining unique items for the auction is a big part of making our event successful. Please consider helping us procure items for our auction. Visit jrmpreschool.org/homepage/jrm-auction/ to find our wish list, procurement letters and other information that would be helpful when asking for donations.Do you own a business? Are you interested in corporate sponsorship? HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR CHILDREN

1 4 | March/April 2017/5777 Vol. 109, No. 3 www.templedehirschsinai.org

As proud as we are of what goes on inside our Religion School classrooms, we also know that some of the most valuable learning experiences take place outside those walls. That is why we have led trips to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. this spring, for eighth graders and tenth graders, respectively. The trip to L.A. included visits to the Museum of Tolerance and Beit T’Shuvah, an addiction recovery facility that integrates Jewish teachings into the treatment. Students also attended a Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial service at First African Methodist Episcopal Church (FAME), and held Shabbat morning services on Venice Beach. Recreational activities included time at Santa Monica Pier and Disneyland. Eighth grader Ethan Weinberg reflected, “Along with going to Disneyland and bonding more with my Jewish friends, activities such as going to a recovery center and going to an African church opened my eyes to how strong people can be when they are dealing with adversity. For me this represented people celebrating new beginnings.”The tenth grade confirmation class trip to D.C. was also action-packed, as students considered “The American Jewish Experience” with visits to the Smithsonian Museums, presidential memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, the Supreme Court, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

During the trip, students participated in the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s L’Taken Social Justice Seminar, studying a range of current topics from a Jewish values perspective. The seminar culminated with each student writing and delivering a persuasive speech to their senators and representatives. Rabbi Aaron Meyer expressed, “As confirmands, they are affirming their connection to Judaism and learning how to navigate the world using Jewish values.”TDSY teens also did some travel this spring, going to Portland for a regional NFTY event and snow-tubing at Snoqualmie Pass. A few students attended the NFTY National Convention in Chicago. Ultimately, among the most valuable takeaways of these trips are the relationships the students build. It is heartwarming to see groups of students return as a bonded group, and we are so impressed by how engaged and present they were in everything we did. Leah Levy is the Director of Middle School and High School Programs at Temple. Temple Hosts Interfaith Sabbath of Dreamsby Irene Amster, Marketing & Development CoordinatorAn estimated 800 people gathered at Temple on Friday, January 20 for Temple’s interfaith Shabbat service titled “Sabbath of Dreams: The Hard Won and the Yet to Be, Embracing the Wisdom of King, Heschel, and Gandhi as We Move Forward Together.”

The event, which was open to the public, was held with partners including St. James Cathedral, St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, MAPS Redmond, the Church Council of Greater Seattle, and the Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry.

Faith leaders from a range of local communities led prayers and delivered sermons from the bimah, and also presented readings from Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Joshua Heschel and Mahatma Gandhi. The community joined in song throughout the service.

Rabbi Daniel Weiner commented, “I was immensely gratified by the attendance, the substance and our achievement of goal: To provide a potent alternative vision for our society at a time of uncertainty and concern—one that faith communities are uniquely endowed to offer.”

At the end of the service, friends, relatives, and complete strangers joined hands and swayed together singing Mosh Ben Ari’s “Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu,” meaning “Peace will come upon us, yet.”

Join us on Sunday, March 12 for Temple’s Annual Purim Shpiel & Celebration in Seattle! Guests of all ages are invited to the Sanctuary at 9:30 AM for the Purim Shpiel and Megillah Reading, which will tell the story of Esther, Mordecai, Haman…and Dorothy and Toto! That’s right--it’s a Wizard of Oz-themed shpiel this year, starring Temple’s very own rabbis and staff.

From 10:30 AM until noon, there will be a carnival in the Jaffe Room for families, and a brunch in the foyer for adults. The Adult Coffeehouse & Brunch, sponsored by TDHS Sisterhood, includes a full brunch buffet, coffee, and a cocktail for $15/person; no RSVP is required.

The carnival will have activities for ages preschool and up, including a bounce house, a photo booth, and music from Nicholas Barrat, aka The Celebration Specialist "M.C. Nicky B." Kids, use your punchcards to play games and win tickets to cash in for prizes! Punchcards can also be used to buy noshes such as cotton candy, popcorn, snacks provided by Vance Dingfelder with Nourish Catering, and of--course--hamantashen!

Don’t forget your costumes…guests of all ages are encouraged to dress up for Purim! So follow that yellow brick road, and we’ll see you in Emerald City!

“It's been a difficult year, but this call

comes at the exact right time. Thank you

for the yahrzeit candle and letting me

know you knew how I felt.”

“Thank you so much for allowing me to

have a family dinner after my mother died,

without doing the cooking. I felt as if I was

not alone as we ate the delicious chicken

soup. I hope I will be able to help another

family in grief.”

Sacred Journeys reaches out to Temple members who have experienced a death of a loved one. We make condolence calls, offer soup and follow up with another call. Our volunteers also call families who are commemorating the first anniversary of a loved one’s death to share with them sympathy and experience for this difficult milestone. Death has no schedule, so we never know when our volunteers will be busy making calls. In the last month or so, we lost several congregants who had large multi-generational families.Sacred Journeys volunteers made condolence calls to wives, brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren. Soup was delivered to doorsteps, picked up in the Seattle office, and picked up at both of our sanctuaries on several Friday nights in February. Here are a few recent notes we have received:A Temple member wrote us: “Thank you so much for allowing me to have a family dinner after my mother died, without doing the cooking. I felt as if I was not alone as we ate the delicious chicken soup. I hope I will be able to help another family in grief.”Often when our volunteers call, we have to leave messages. Recently, a volunteer connected with a widower calling him to let him know we were thinking of him as his wife’s yahrzeit approached. “It's been a difficult year,” he told her, “but this call comes at the exact right time. Thank you for the yahrzeit candle and letting me know you knew how I felt.”If you are interested in hearing more about volunteering for Sacred Journeys, please contact Blaire Notrica at 206.693.3047 or [email protected].

B'NAI MITZVAH PROJECTS AT TEMPLEby Rabbi Aaron C. Meyer, Associate Rabbi

Students who become B’nai Mitzvah at Temple De Hirsch Sinai, adult members of our Jewish community, are newly responsible for upholding the commandments as we understand them — including doing their part to partner with God in perfecting the work of creation. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch taught that "Judaism is not a mere adjunct to life: it comprises all of life....To be a Jew in the synagogue and the kitchen, in the field and the warehouse, in the office and the pulpit ... with the needle and the engraving tool, with the pen and the chisel — that is what it means to be a Jew." Our learning about Judaism, then, can only be fully actualized when we integrate that learning into our lived reality and experience of the world. The B’nai Mitzvah Project is about accepting this responsibility. Surprisingly, it is one’s actions, not the party, that demonstrate adulthood during this sacred milestone! Together with their families and in community with other students, our B’nai Mitzvah candidates choose an interested-based specialization, or track, and go out into the world in partnership with local organizations including Northwest Harvest, East and West Side Baby Corner, Treehouse for Foster Kids, the Mountains to Sound Greenway, and many more.

Avery Siebrecht, whose Hebrew name is Aviva Binyomina, will be called to the Torah on March 4, 2017. Avery is the daughter of Stacie & Karl Siebrecht and the sister of Isabel & Vivian Siebrecht. She is the granddaughter of Ileana & Lewis Berger and Judy & Frank Siebrecht. Avery is a 7th grader at Seattle Academy. She enjoys competitive gymnastics and volleyball. Avery’s mitzvah project supports Casa Hogar, a non-profit in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico that provides home and care for children in need, ages 4 to 18. During her recent visit to Mexico, Avery along with family and friends volunteered there. With the help of her friends and school community, Avery raised money by holding a bake sale at her school. Her donation will support the building of a new dormitory for girls.

Daniella Rose Fisher will be called to the Torah on March 11, 2017. Dani is the daughter of Rodney & Lauren Fisher and the sister of Barrett & Ava Fisher. She is the granddaughter of Herb & Linda Garfinkel and Edward & the late Babs Fisher. Dani is a 7th grader at Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. She enjoys performing in theater at her school and at Studio East during the summer. She also enjoys dancing, music, and hanging out with her friends and sisters.

Lily Clementine Podolsky, whose Hebrew name is Shoshana, will be called to the Torah on March 25, 2017. Lily is the daughter of Rachael Podolsky & Matt Podolsky and the sister of Jack Morris & Nathan Ben. She is the granddaughter of John & Elaine Hibshman and Mickey & Linda Podolsky. Lily is a 7th Grader at Chinook Middle School. She enjoys playing volleyball and lacrosse, Snapchatting, spending time with friends, and volunteering to feed the homeless. For her mitzvah project, Lily is volunteering with the Friendship Circle.

Grace Louise Leibowitz, whose Hebrew name is Kochavah, will be called to the Torah on April 1, 2017. Grace is the daughter of Aaron & Rebekkah Leibowitz and the sister of Emily Leibowitz. She is the granddaughter of Isaac & Terry Chamaty, Starlyn Chamaty z”l, Roy & Carol Leibowitz, and Hollis Diamond. Grace is a 7th grader at Maywood Middle School. She plays the tenor saxophone in her school band and enjoys photography and basketball. Grace loves to hang out with her friends and family and playing with her two dogs, Betsy and Libby. For her mitzvah project, Grace volunteered at Treehouse, made blankets for Children’s Hospital, and helped prepare and serve food at local shelters. Grace currently works weekly with a local elementary school helping 1st graders learn how to read. For all of this, we are very proud of her.

Sisterhood Gift Shop Seeks New Managers Join the team that runs the historic TDHS Sisterhood Gift Shop! With locations in both Seattle and Bellevue, the shop is entirely volunteer-run, and helps fund Sisterhood and other Temple programming while serving our community’s need for Judaica.

Possible roles to fill include finance manager, buyer manager, volunteer coordinator, and merchandising manager. Year-long and longer positions are available, and any Temple member is eligible to apply—being a Sisterhood member is not required, nor is being female! As a perk, all managers have access to gift shows.

The shop offers an impressive range of beautiful ritual items, stunning jewelry, and exciting children’s games. The shop also sells a large assortment of books, including Jewish cookbooks and Jewish children's books

The current managers – Roslyn Tooley, Betty Anne McCall and Cindy Stratiner – are retiring after long and rewarding tenures, but will be available in advisory roles. The shop has about 25 volunteers at present.

If you are interested, please contact Cindy Stratiner at 425.766.0039 or [email protected]. We look forward to talking with you about this opportunity!

Please “like" TDHS Sisterhood on Facebook to connect with us and learn about Sisterhood events and programs. To get involved, join Sisterhood, RSVP for an event or if you have any questions, email: [email protected].

Need Some Seder Inspiration?by Toby Harris, Librarian

Joyous Haggadah, The Illuminated Story of Passover, as told by Richard and Liora Codor is a child-friendly, condensed and clear text with a traditional structure. Colorful, humorous illustrations contribute to this delightful Haggadah for the whole family.

New American Haggadah, edited by Jonathan Safran Foer and translated by Nathan Englander is intended for those who want an intellectually stimulating seder, with short essays scattered throughout meant for digging deeper. Translations are traditional.

The New World Haggadah, by Ilan Stavans, art by Gloria Abella Ballen. Poetry and art abound in this less traditional Haggadah, enhanced with Spanish culture and language.

The Gateways Haggadah, by Rebecca Redner is a basic Haggadah designed for families with children of all abilities and disabilities featuring simple, clear language, color photos and illustrations, and prayers and songs illuminated with Mayer-Johnson Picture Communication Symbols.

The New American Haggadah, developed by Mordecai M. Kaplan, Eugene Kohn, and Ira Eisenstein has a traditional structure with a Reconstructionist, liberal Judaism perspective and gender sensitive translations.

BooK disCussionsOur book group meets monthly and reads books with Jewish content. Feel free to come once or every month. We rotate between the Seattle & Bellevue campuses. To be on our email list, send note to [email protected].

Save the Date: sun • Jun 4The Tribe’s Third annual senior ProM wiTh The suMMiT aT firsT hill! For the third year in a row The Tribe will be putting on the feel-good event of the year! Senior Prom first debuted in April 2015 as “A Night in Vintage Hollywood.” First envisioned and altogether executed by Tribe leaders David Hedlund and Alyssa Bobman, this fantastic night brought the generations together in a fun, engaging and spirited way. We dined together, took fantastic snapshots in a photo booth sponsored by Red Fish Blue Fish, and danced the night away to the tunes spun by The Celebration Specialist "M.C. Nicky B," Temple’s own Nicholas Barrat. Last year’s theme was “Casino Night” and, suffice it to say, everyone went home a winner! This year’s theme will be decided upon in the coming weeks and we encourage you to join us as we put this meaningful, fun event together. Consider attending as a volunteer or sponsoring one of our tables – the more the merrier! Let’s make some more “L’dor Va’Dorable” moments this coming spring at Senior Prom 2017!
