介绍 Introduction
这些水语口述故事原来是潘池元（水族，塘州人）和赖静如（水语研究员）以塘州音收集、整
理、翻译和发表的。为了方便水族和学者学习水语三洞标准音，潘承龙（水族，三洞人）和康
蔼德（水语研究员）就把它们改成三洞音，并提供英文翻译和水-汉-英个别单词对照。
希望这些材料有助于学习水语标准拼音的水族朋友和国内外学者！

These Sui oral stories were originally collected, transcribed, edited and published according to
Tangzhou pronunciation by Pan Chiyuan (Sui from Tangzhou) and Daisy Lai (Sui researcher). For the
convenience of those learning the standard Sui orthography transcribed according to the Sandong
pronunciation, Pan Chenglong (Sui from Sandong) and Andy Castro (Sui researcher) converted them
into standard Sandong dialect and added English translations and Sui-Chinese-English
interlinearisations.
We hope that these materials will prove useful for Sui friends learning to read and write, and for
Chinese and foreign scholars.

*BizFul 水族一种鬼火的名称。In Sui, BizFul is the name of a kind of demon fire.
1很久以前，有一个妇女去买大锅。2到半路，看到坟墓突然着火，她叫了一声，鬼火就追着烧
她。 3她不知所措，就蹲在地用锅盖住自己，鬼火把锅烧得通红。4别人看见了就拿芦苇来拍
打，之后整个锅被烧得黑不得了。 5 （在水族地区若有人被鬼缠身，就要用芦苇来拍打，去盛一碗井水一边用口喷水一边拍打，
把鬼驱走。）
1Once upon a time, a woman went to buy a large pan for the stove. 2On the way, she saw a grave
suddenly catch fire. She called out, and the fire chased after her and singed her. 3Not knowing what to
do, she took the pan and hid underneath it. The pan got so hot that it turned red. 4A passer-by saw
what was happening, took some reeds and beat the fire out. The whole pan had been seared black by
the fire. 5(In the Sui region, if someone is possessed by a demon you must go and get a bowl of water from the
well, then beat the person with reeds while sprinkling on water. This will drive the demon away.)

里有十几只鸭子游来游去，后来又看到有个人在大路边那坐着。9他以为那个人坐在那看鸭
子，他就上前问那人：“你把这些鸭子卖给我吧！”10那人回答说：“嗯好！11你把钱给我！12你就可以自己到塘里捉要（鸭子）”。13他又笨就把身上所有的那些钱全给了那人，然后他
跳进塘里捉鸭子。14捉了大半天，鸭子全飞走了。15他捉鸭子捉累了就爬到塘边休息，就看不
到那个坐在路边的那个人，16那样他什么就都没得到，两手空空的回家。
17回到家他的妻子问：“你买了什么回来？”18“我买鸭子但被骗成这样了。”19他的
妻子就非常生气，满肚子都是怒火。20“连野鸭子你都不认识吗！21你真是笨啊！笨也没有这
么笨的了！22嘱咐你，下次你看到别人做什么，你也做什么！”
23到第二天，他的妻子就有叫他去跟他妻子的父亲借钱，他很高兴（去行）。24走到半
路看到一对夫妻（俩）正在争吵打架， 25他就上前去劝说，他就打那人的妻子，26然后那人骂
他：“凭什么轮到你打她！27你打我的妻子作什么？”28但那人就抓住他不放，直到他不知该
怎么办。29他承认错误，把从他岳父那里借来的钱，全都给了那人，30然后又认错赔礼。
31回到家妻子问：“你买到了什么？”32然后她的丈夫就说到半路遇到了这样这样的
事。33他妻子又生气说：“别人两夫妻争吵，你劝就好，你干嘛去帮忙打人！”
34第三天，他又去向他的岳父借钱，35回到半路看到两头水牛相斗，哪一头都各不相
让，哪一头也都各不服输，36两头一直在那斗啊斗啊然后他看到了就去劝。37水牛相互打斗也
去劝笨不笨啊？38最后两头牛都不听他的，后来牛脚一踢，一下牛角一扬，就把他推到了田埂
边，直到他疼痛哀吟，他喊：“老婆啊！老婆！39你喜欢叫我去劝别人，现在才疼成这样，40
疼得快要死了。”然后他一呜呼哀哉就真的死了。
*擂钵 loiz - 水族舂辣椒用的器具。
1Once upon a time there was a husband and wife. 2The wife was extremely clever and the husband
extremely stupid. 3One day, the wife said to the husband, “Our household is so poor that it’s like this
mortar* after it has been washed clean three times. 4Go and borrow some money from my father.
Then we can do some business and make some money.” 5The husband thought this was a great idea
and felt very happy.
6So he went to borrow some money from his father-in-law. 7Having got the money, he came
home in high spirits. 8On the way home he saw a pond with lots of ducks in it swimming back and
forth. He then saw a man sitting there by the main road. 9He immediately thought that the man must
be sitting there to guard the ducks, so he went over and asked him, “Sell the ducks to me, OK?” 10The
man said, “Alright! 11Give me the money! 12Then you can go and catch the ducks yourself.” 13The
husband was really stupid, so he gave all the money he had on him to the man. Then he jumped into
the pond to catch the ducks. 14As he tried to catch them, the day wore on, and all of the ducks flew
away. 15Eventually he became quite exhausted from trying to catch the ducks and he climbed up onto
the side of the pond. But he could no longer see the man who had been sitting by the road. 16So he
went home empty-handed, having got nothing at all.
17When he got home, his wife asked him, “What did you buy?” 18“I bought some ducks but
was cheated out of them!” 19His wife was so angry that her whole stomach felt on fire. 20“You don’t
even recognise wild ducks?! 21You’re so stupid, it’s impossible to get stupider than you. 22I tell you,
next time just do the same as whatever you see other people doing!”
23On the second day, his wife told him to go and borrow some more money from his father-in-
law, and he cheerfully (went off). 24On the way home, he saw a husband and wife quarrelling with
each other and hitting each other. 25So he went up and tried to mediate between them, but he ended up
hitting the man’s wife. 26The man yelled at him, “Why did you go and hit her? 27What did you hit my
wife for?” 28The man grabbed him and wouldn’t let him go. He was completely desperate, so 29he
came clean and gave all of the money that he’d borrowed from his father-in-law to the man. 30Then he
admitted he was wrong and apologized profusely.
31When he got home, his wife asked him, “What did you buy?” 32So the husband told her

what had happened to him on the way home. 33The wife was furious, “If a couple you don’t know are
quarrelling, it’s enough for you just to go and remonstrate with them, but what on earth did you hit the
wife for?!”
34On the third day, he went and borrowed even more money from his father-in-law. 35On the
way home he saw two water buffalo fighting. Neither of them would give way to the other. Neither of
them was willing to give in to the other. 36They just kept on fighting. Eventually he had seen enough
and went to mediate. 37Isn’t it stupid, to go and mediate between two fighting water buffalo?! 38Neither of the water buffalo paid any attention to him. Suddenly, one of them struck out with its foot
and kicked him. In a flash it tossed him with its horn, sending him to the edge of the rice paddy. He
moaned in pain and called out, “Oh my darling, my darling! 39You said that I should go and
remonstrate between others, but now I’m in so much pain. 40It’s so painful I feel like I’m about to
die.” Then, all of a sudden, he let out a moan and really did die.

1According to legend, the dragon and the fly had a dispute. 2The dragon said that dragons are the most

the other and they both refused to back down. 3But they couldn’t think of what they could use to
measure which one was more lowly and which was more brilliant.
4So they decided to see who was the first to draw lots for doing some magic. 5The dragon
drew lots for doing magic first. 6The dragon let out a roar, and with a swish of his tail turned into a

without sleeping. Very late the next morning he still hadn’t come to work. 20Then he asked his son to
go to the landlord’s house. 21When he arrived there, the landlord asked, “Why didn’t your father
come?” 22“My father is giving birth to a child at home.” 23The landlord said, “How can a man give
birth to a child? I don’t believe you.” 24“If you don’t believe me, go to our home to see for yourself.” 25So the landlord went to the servant’s home to see for himself. 26When he saw the servant, he asked
him, “Your son tells me you’re giving birth to a child?” 27“Yes! And you told me to go and get a

gave the servant rice paddies and fields as compensation for his daughter.

1Once upon a time, all the animals were able to speak – including cats, tigers, dogs and rats! 2One day,
all the animals were having a discussion on a mountain peak. Only the tiger had not made come. 3The
cat was good at running, so they asked the cat to go and call the tiger. While on his way, he came
across a dog. The cat called the dog, thinking he was a tiger (lit. calling the dog a tiger), and they went
back (to the mountain peak).
4When they arrived, all the animals laughed at the dog. The dog angrily said to the cat, “I live

that he pounced on the cat and bit him. 7So at home nowadays, the dog and the cat never get along
with each other, and people often remark, “dogs and cats” (a saying that means people don’t get along
with each other).
8Then the tiger arrived, and all the animals laughed at the tiger. The tiger angrily said to the
cat, “Of all the animals here, I am the most frightening, I am the strongest, yet you called me a dog!” 9Upon saying this, he pounced on the cat. 10Previously, the cat was the tiger’s instructor, and he had
taught the tiger three moves: 11one move was to pounce; the second move was to roar, and the third
was to wave the tail. 12The tiger only knew these three moves. 13There was one kind of move left that
the cat hadn’t taught the tiger: the ability to climb trees. 14So when the tiger pounced on the cat, the
cat jumped up a tree, and the tiger could only look up at him. 15Previously, the cat had known that he

7报名的那一天，梁山伯先去，天热他坐在一棵大树下乘凉。8一会兒，祝英台到了，
她也坐在到那棵树下乘凉，9祝英台爱说话就问梁山伯：“哥，你要去哪儿啊?”10“我去杭州
报名读书。”11祝英台说：“我也到那里去哦！”12然后他们一起去那地方，报了同一班，住
在同一房间，还同睡一张床。13梁山伯看祝英台睡觉从不脱去衣服，14梁山伯就问：“你怎么
睡觉都不脱衣呢？”15“嗯，我不习惯脱衣服（睡觉）。”
16之后他们去洗澡，祝英台叫梁山伯先走，梁山伯在河的下游洗澡，让（留）祝英台
在上游洗。17（以前）女孩子洗澡时喜欢把花朵放在水里，这样可以散发（花）香味，花瓣被
水冲到下游。那时梁山伯都不知道，18梁山伯自言自语说：“男孩子为什么也要把花放在水里
洗澡呢？19女孩子洗澡才要花吧？”
20梁山伯一直都不知道她（是女孩），他们的老师也不知道祝英台是女孩。21他们的老
师见他们俩相处得很好，他就拿了一碗水放到睡觉的被子上，那碗水一点都不溅出来。
22祝英台大到了婚嫁的年龄，她父母写信叫她回家嫁人，祝英台就对梁山伯说：“假
如我是个女孩，你愿意娶我吗?”23然后梁山伯就笑她说：“你是男孩，你这样问干嘛！”24
“嗯！我家里有个妹妹，她长得很像我，就像我一模一样。”25之后祝英台就回家了，26回到
家里，有一户姓马的人家，他们家又有人当官，提糯米竹篮来提亲。
27快到祝英台出嫁那天，梁山伯才回到家，到了家他打听要去拜访祝英台。28他打听到
了祝家，看到一个小妹很像祝英台，他不知道那女孩其实就是祝英台。29以前他以为祝英台是
男孩，现在他穿女孩的衣服，他就认不出她来了。30然后他问：“你哥哥上哪儿去了，妹
妹？”31那小妹说：“我的哥哥名叫什么？”32梁山伯说：“叫祝英台。”33“哦，是我哥哥
啊，他不在家呢，他刚刚去别处了。你到家里来坐一会等他来”34梁山伯就进屋坐着等。35她
倒茶招待梁山伯。 36“你哥哥还不回来等这么久了。”37“你再等一会他就回来。”38等到天
黑梁山伯就回去了。
39过了几天听说祝英台要嫁人，梁山伯感到非常惊讶。40“男人怎么会出嫁呢？”41因
此梁山伯就到祝家去看才知道祝英台是女孩。42人家已经提着糯米篮很快就迎娶（吃酒），梁
山伯伤心回去，43回到他家里一到家（一爬上楼梯）就病了。44祝英台知道了，她就去看望。45她的父母知道了就派人去把祝英台抓回来关在家里。46她就还是从窗户跳出去，47到了梁山
伯的家，她握住梁山伯的手，什么都不说就回来了。48之后马家就抬着花轿来娶了祝英台。
49然后梁山伯就伤心（病）死了。50他的家人就把梁山伯葬在那大路旁。51抬迎娶祝英
台的花轿正好路过梁山伯的坟旁，到了坟墓那，祝英台就对那些抬轿的人说：“放我下来解手

小便一下，好吗？”52祝英台就到梁山伯的坟墓那里，跪下后前拜了三拜。53雷就把那坟给劈
开，祝英台就跳进那坟里。54她就变成了蝴蝶，梁山伯变成了蜻蜓，他们就成双成对地在天空
中飞翔。
1A long time ago, there were two villages. 2Residents of one village had the surname Zhu, residents of
the other had the surname Liang. The two villages were some distance away from each other. 3In the
village surnamed Liang, a boy was born called Liang Shanbo*. 4In the village surnamed Zhu, a girl
was born called Zhu Yingtai*. 5Zhu Yingtai really enjoyed studying, but she was born in the wrong
times. In those days, girls were not allowed to study. 6So she decided to wear boys’ clothes and go to
study.
7On registration day, Liang Shanbo left first. It was very hot so he sat down under a tree to
keep cool. 8At that moment, Zhu Yingtai arrived. She too sat down under the tree to rest. 9Zhu Yingtai
was very talkative and she asked Liang Shanbo, “Where are you going, elder brother?” 10“I’m going
to Hangzhou to register for my studies.” 11Zhu Yingtai said, “Oh, I’m going there too!” 12So they went
there together, they registered for the same class, they lived in the same room, and they even slept in
the same bed! 13Liang Shanbo noticed that Zhu Yingtai never took her clothes off when she went to
bed. 14Liang Shanbo asked her, “Why do you never take your clothes off when you go to bed?” 15“Oh,
I don’t like taking my clothes off.” 16And when they went to bathe, Zhu Yingtai asked Liang Shanbo
to go first. Liang Shanbo bathed downstream, leaving Zhu Yingtai to bathe upstream.
17(In those days,) girls liked to put flowers in the water when they bathed to create a fragrant
smell. The flowers floated down to where Liang Shanbo was bathing, but he didn’t know (what they
were for). 18Liang Shanbo said to himself, “Why is a boy putting flowers in the water while he’s
bathing? 19Isn’t it girls who want flowers?”
20Neither Liang Shanbo nor their teacher ever knew that Zhu Yingtai was actually a girl. 21Their teacher saw that they got on really well together, and he put a bowl of water on their quilt. The
water never spilled out!
22When Zhu Yingtai got to marriageable age, her parents sent her a letter asking her to go
home and get married. So Zhu Yingtai said to Liang Shanbo, “If I were a girl, would you be willing to
marry me?” 23Liang Shanbo laughed, “But you are a boy, so why do you ask that?” 24“Oh, I’ve got a
little sister at home who looks like me, in fact she’s the spitting image of me!” 25Then Zhu Yingtai
went home. 26When she got home, there was a household surnamed Ma, within that household was a
man who was an official, and he came carrying a rice basket with a marriage proposal.
27Zhu Yingtai’s wedding day had almost come when Liang Shanbo came home. When he
arrived home, he went to inquire after Zhu Yingtai so as to go and visit her. 28When he got to her
home, he saw a young girl who looked exactly like Zhu Yingtai. He didn’t know that the girl was
really Zhu Yingtai! 29He had thought that Zhu Yingtai was a boy, so now that she was wearing girl’s
clothes, he didn’t recognise her. 30Then he asked her, “Where has your older brother gone?” 31The girl
replied, “Which brother are you talking about? (lit. What is the older brother’s name?)” 32Liang
Shanbo said, “Zhu Yingtai.” 33“Oh, yes, he’s my older brother. He’s not at home at the moment. He’s
just gone out. Why don’t you come in and sit down and wait for him to come back?” 34So Liang
Shanbo went in and sat down to wait. 35Zhu Yingtai poured some tea for Liang Shanbo. 36“Your older
brother still hasn’t come back. I’ve been waiting for ages!” 37“Wait a bit longer.” 38Liang Shanbo
waited until it was dark and then went home.
39After a few days Liang Shanbo heard that Zhu Yingtai was being married off and he was
stupefied. 40“How can a boy be married off?” 41Then Liang Shanbo went to have a look and only then
did he discover that Zhu Yingtai was a girl. 42Someone else had brought a basket of rice and arranged
the banquet to marry her, and Liang Shanbo went back home mortified. 43Upon arriving home, he had
just climbed the stairs† when he fell ill. 44Zhu Yingtai heard about it and came to spend some time
with him. 45Her parents found out and sent people to bring Zhu Yingtai back and lock her up. 46So she
jumped out of her window and went to see Liang Shanbo again. 47When she arrived, she grasped
Liang Shanbo’s hand. She didn’t say a word and then returned home. 48Then people from the Ma
family came with a sedan chair and took Zhu Yingtai away.
49At that very moment, Liang Shanbo died heartbroken. 50His family carried him to the main

road and buried him there. 51The sedan chair carrying Zhu Yingtai went by Liang Shanbo’s grave.
When they arrived at the grave, Zhu Yingtai said to the people carrying the sedan chair, “Let me out
here so that I can relieve myself.” 52Then Zhu Yingtai went to Liang Shanbo’s grave, kneeled down
and kowtowed three times. 53Lightning then struck the grave and split it in two, and Zhu Yingtai
jumped into the grave. 54She then turned into a butterfly and Liang Shanbo turned into a dragonfly.
Forming a pair, they flew up into the sky together.
*This story is a traditional Han Chinese story so names are transcribed in pinyin according to the
standard Mandarin pronunciation. In Sui, Liang Shanbo is written LyaangzSaancBez and Zhu
Yingtai is written ZuzYincTaix. †Traditional Sui homes have stairs on the outside of the house leading to the front door. The animals

1Once upon a time, a family raised a water buffalo. The buffalo was still a heifer. She had not yet
gone into heat, had not yet been pregnant, and was very fat. 2One day, during the season for levelling
the paddy fields, it was raining hard, and (the master of the house) was driving the buffalo out to level
the paddies. 3The buffalo felt tired, so she got down and went to sleep right there in the middle of the
paddy fields. Then the man beat the water buffalo but she refused to get up. 4He beat her until she was
in great pain. Then the water buffalo spoke. “I am really tired, master!" 5The man was startled and ran
back home. He said to his wife, 6“Today our water buffalo actually spoke. She had fallen asleep in the
middle of the paddy field. I beat her and she told me that she was very tired!”
7His wife was astonished. 8She ran with him to the paddy field to have a look. When they got
to the field, the water buffalo had gone off somewhere and was nowhere to be found. 9After that, his
wife never felt completely at ease, so she took some rice to a shaman and got him to called the spirit

1Long ago, there was a household which bore a son. The son was very shrewd, very clever and very
