SOMETHING FOR ALL ASTATTERSALLS IRELAND

SEPTEMBER BEGINS

By Emma Berry

NEWMARKET, UKBBIt's Fairyhouse, but not as we know it. For

the second year running the Tattersalls Ireland September

Yearling Sale has gone on tour to Newmarket, with just shy of

600 youngsters catalogued to sell over the next two days.

The claim of Tattersalls Ireland's CEO Simon Kerins that the

September Sale has something for everyone is fully backed up

by two notable graduates of the sale on the track this year. This

time last year Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) was plucked

from Micheal Ryan's Al Eile Stud for ,50,000 by breeze-up

pinhooker Robson Aguiar and he is now a Group 2 winner and

Group 1-placed. Go back another two years and Johnny Murtagh

picked up Sonnyboyliston (Ire) (Power {GB}) for i26,000. He

may have taken a little longer to reach his peak, but the

4-year-old is now a six-time winner with the G1 Irish St Leger

and famous Ebor H. to his name as well as almost ,650,000 in

earnings.

"We always have a mix of types at this saleBByou have some

2-year-old types and later-maturing, staying types as well, so

you'd like to think there is something for everyone," says Kerins.

"It has stood the test of time in terms of its graduates. There's a

great mix of winners from the sale." Cont. p2

THE WEEKLY WRAP: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE

HORSES By Emma Berry

Those who work in racing know all too well the endless hours

devoted to getting horses ready for the racecourse, and fans of

the sport were able to see that for themselves during the first

National Racehorse Week in Britain. The brainchild of National

Hunt trainer Richard Phillips, the inaugural week-long spotlight

on the racing industry included racing stables being open to the

public all over the country, starting at Epsom and Malton, and

culminating in Newmarket's popular Henry Cecil Open

Weekend. It can be deemed a huge success.

This past Sunday alone, 30 trainers opened their doors

throughout the morning at >HQ', with a rare chance to see

behind the scenes at Godolphin's Stanley House Stables proving

immensely popular and attracting around 1,200 visitors in the

90 minutes in which it was open. Cont. p4

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Preview Cont. from p1

The fact that Kerins is speaking at Park Paddocks rather than

from Tattersalls Ireland's base at Fairyhouse may be the source

of some frustration but, as with all sales through the pandemic,

the number one concern is that they are able to take place at all,

even if dates and locations have to be shuffled. The fate of the

September Sale, at least when it came to its location, was sealed

when a number of British visitors to the Tattersalls Ireland Derby

Sale were told they had to remain in their hotels or return to

Britain on the eve of the sale despite a Covid >bubble' being in

operation during Ireland's lockdown.

"The background to it was what happened at the Derby Sale,

when we were told at the 11th hour that the bubble for the UK

buyers had ben rescinded," says Kerins. "It wasn't long

afterwards that the entries for the September Sale were closing

and we made the decision to come here. We wanted to give

clarity and certainty to our customers."

He continues, "In an ideal world we wouldn't have the sale in

Newmarket for the second year in a row, we've also had the

breeze-up sale here twice now, but I can't see it happening ever

again and the plan is certainly to go back to Ireland next year.

The Somerville Sale was exceptional here recently, there was

great buzz about the place, and you hope it will follow through

to this sale."

At least one consignor at Park Paddocks was certainly buzzing,

even if he is based in almost the quietest area of the sales

grounds in the calm at the back of Highflyer's G yard. Guy

O'Callaghan, who has brought four yearlings from his

Grangemore Stud to sell this week, had the joy of watching

Wings Of War (Ire) win the G2 Mill Reef S. at Newbury at the

weekend. The Clive Cox-trained colt, who runs in the colours of

Isa Salman Al Khalifa, is the first foal of O'Callaghan's Kodiac (GB)

mare Futoon (Ire) and is by his family's perennially popular

stallion Dark Angel (Ire).

"It's magic," says O'Callaghan. "It was great timing and it's a

great result for everyoneBBfor the stallion, for the mare, and

great for Sheikh Isa. He's an enthusiastic and relatively new

owner to the game and let's hope he turns into a brilliant horse

for him. Clive is just a consistently fantastic trainer. Time and

time again he comes up with a new one."

He adds, "It's a great start for the mare and long may it

continue. It's a wonderful family and every year good,

hard-knocking, fast horses come out of it and he seems to be

another one."

On the timing front, the update is almost as good as it gets for

the full-brother to Wings Of War, who is set to appear on the

Monday of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

"He's a big, strong, grey colt. I'd be quite hopeful that people

will like him and I'm very proud of him," says the breeder.

But for now O'Callaghan's focus is on the quartet being

paraded up and down before him for a range of yearling

viewers. They include a Dark Angel filly (lot 129), this time not a

homebred but a 20,000gns pinhook from the December Foal

Sale. Another first foal, her dam Light My Fire (Ire) (Dragon Pulse

{Ire}) looks exactly the type to appeal to those with a

commercial eye, being a winner twice at two herself and placed

in the G3 Firth of Clyde S.

Similar comments apply to the El Kabeir filly in the draft (lot

258), whose hardy dam Rural Celebration (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits

{GB}) won seven times between the ages of two and six and was

runner-up in the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S. Her daughter

Country Carnival (Ire) (Mayson {GB}) was also a winner at two

and was third in the Listed Marygate S.

By now, Dark Angel needs no introduction to sales folk, being

one of the most dependable stallions, both commercially and on

the racecourse. "He's the gift that keeps on giving," admits

O'Callaghan.

Following in his wake at Yeomanstown Stud is another grey, El

Kabeir, a strong son of Scat Daddy whose first 2-year-olds are

beginning to make quite an impression. Two of his leading colts,

the listed winner Masekela (Ire) and treble winner Harrow (Ire),

hold group-race entries at Newmarket later this week. Cont. p3

A filly by Mehmas is lot 312 | Tattersalls Ireland

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Preview Cont.

"El Kabeir has made a wonderful start and we are so proud of

him. His horses have plenty of size and scope and they have

come to hand at the time of year that we were hoping they

would," O'Callaghan says.

Of his hopes for the next few days, he adds, "I think I have a

lovely even draft, with the Dark Angel filly and the El Kabeir filly

probably the picks of them. There's been plenty of footfall, so

we're just hoping that the trade will be good and that we have

four empty head-collars at the end of the sale."

Another yearling in the sale to have benefited from a useful

recent update is Ballinalard Stud's Mehmas (Ire) filly (lot 312).

When the catalogue went to print, her half-brother King X J (Ire)

(Cotai Glory {GB}) was still unraced but the colt, bred by Tom

and Hazel Russell, has since scooped the pot of the valuable

Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale S. for trainer Michael

O'Callaghan and owner Paul J Nolan. Worth i300,000 in total,

the juvenile contest is run over six and a half furlongs on Irish

Champions Weekend and is open to all graduates of the

September Yearling Sale.

Part II of the sale, which with fairly precision timing is set to

start at 5:53 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Tattersalls

Ireland website, features a quartet of yearlings by a stallion

whose offspring are not often seen on these shores but who will

be widely remembered. Kool Kompany (Ire), a flashy son of the

much-missed Jeremy, won the G2 Prix Robert Papin and G2

Railway S. among his seven victories between the ages of two

and five, and he eventually retired to Dehesa de Milagro in

Spain, where his first crop are now 2-year-olds. Spanish-based

consignor Alex Mahony of EAM Bloodstock consigns three colts

and a filly by the stallion for Wednesday's sale, including a son of

the G3 Prix Eclipse winner Damoiselle (Sky Classic) as lot 586.

The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale takes place on

Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m.

Budding jockey Joshua Myers enjoying National Racehorse

Week

It=s All About The Horses Cont.

from p1

I live in one of the smaller stables

in Newmarket and our yard had a

constant stream of visitors who

clearly loved being able to see and

get close to the horses in their

home environment. It may be easy

for those of us who work with

horses on a daily basis to forget

sometimes what drew us to this life

in the first place. Having the chance

to see our stable through the eyes

of our guests on Sunday morning

really made the day extra special,

bringing a reminder, amid all the

politics and other background noise,

that really racing is only ever about the horses.

We particularly enjoyed welcoming budding jockey Joshua

Myers, who was first taken to a racecourse at the age of seven

back in August 2014 on a day when our filly Indira (GB)

happened to win at Ripon. Waiting near where the horses were

being washed down after the race, Joshua asked if he was

allowed to stroke Indira. So began his passion for the sport.

Seven years later, Joshua has now ridden in two pony races

and clearly has his heart set on a future in racing. Over the

weekend he travelled to Newmarket from Yorkshire with his

family and as part of his tour came to our yard to meet Indira's

first foal, now a 2-year-old.

As Joshua's younger brother got in on the photo with him and

the horse, their dad said to me, "Oh

no, I hope I haven't got two

racing-mad sons." I hope he has.

He's Apples As we head into arguably the most

important few weeks of the

European Flat turf season, it's tight

at the top of the British trainers'

championship between Andrew

Balding, Charlie Appleby, and John

and Thady Gosden. While Aidan

O'Brien has a commanding lead in

Ireland, chased determinedly by his

son Joseph, the excellent form of

the stables of Jessica Harrington,

Ger Lyons and Johnny Murtagh in

particular have brought an interesting depth to the season.

Godolphin's Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) became the first North American top-level winner for her superstar Banstead Manor-based stallion,

overcoming an eventful start before storming home through the final furlong to prove much-the-best in the GI Natalma S. on Sunday at

Woodbine. | Michael Burns/WEG

The Weekly Wrap Cont.

Appleby may be narrowly behind Balding at present but he is

without question the trainer of the moment. Currently operating

at a 41% strike-rate and having sent out Group 1 winners

Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Native Trail (GB) (Oasis

Dream {GB}) the previous weekend in Britain and Ireland, not to

mention a 1-2 in the G2 Park S. with Glorious Journey (GB)

(Dubawi {Ire}) and D'Bai (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), his half of the

Godolphin operation rolled on to North America this weekend

with all guns blazing.

All three Grade I contenders at WoodbineBBWalton Street

(GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), and the 2-year-olds Wild Beauty (GB)

(Frankel {GB}) and Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})BBwere triumphant

in their assignments, notably with erstwhile Godolphin stable

jockey Frankie Dettori in the saddle for all three.

Meanwhile in New York, Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) won

Belmont Park's Jockey Club Derby Invitational S. with Jamie

Spencer, who flew home overnight in time to record another

important victory in the team showjumping competition at

Newmarket's open weekend with his talented daughter Chloe

and trainer George Scott.

That quartet of Godolphin winners and Jockey Club Oaks

fourth Creative Flair (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) netted almost $1

million in prize-money for the stable which has two of the

favourites for Europe's richest race, the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de

Triomphe, in a little under a fortnight's time.

Important Call Up For Graffard There was major news from the French training ranks over the

last week with the announcement that Francis Graffard is to

succeed his former boss Alain de Royer-Dupre at the Aga Khan's

Aiglemont training centre at Gouvieux at the end of 2021.

Graffard will continue to operate his own significant Chantilly

stable, which in recent years has been responsible for a stream

of top-class horses, including the Classic winners Channel (Ire)

(Nathaniel {Ire}) and In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}).

The impending retirement of de Royer-Dupre will bring to a

close a near-40-year tenure at Aiglemont, during which time he

has overseen the careers of such champions as Dalakhani (Ire)

and Zarkava (Fr). He too has run a separate public training stable

from which base the famously flighty Irish Oaks winner Chicquita

(Ire), champion racemare Pride (Fr), and Melbourne Cup winner

Americain were trained. Cont. p6

Stallions In The News Wootton Bassett (GB) continues to play an ever more

prominent role as a sire of note and with his biggest crop to date

set to start appearing in paddocks around Europe from January,

he is enjoying a decent season on the track, especially with his

juveniles.

In recent weeks his new stakes winners have included Atomic

Jones (Fr), Royal Patronage (Fr), Zellie (Fr) and Attagirl (GB), and

on Thursday the Fabrice Chappet-trained Topgear (Fr) extended

his unbeaten run to three when landing the G3 Prix Eclipse for

owner Hisaaki Saito. A i200,000 purchase at last year's Arqana

Select Sale by Sebastian Desmontils, Topgear is entered for the

G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc weekend.

Wootton Bassett may now have departed for Ireland, but

France can still boast the services of Le Havre (Ire), who is also

enjoying a good spin. His major Arc hope Wonderful Tonight (Fr)

has sadly been retired through injury but Le Havre was

represented by another two stakes winners on consecutive days

last week when Hunscote Stud and Chris Humber's homebred

Ville de Grace (GB) landed the Listed John Musker Fillies' S., and

Waliyak (Fr) added the G3 Prix Bertrand de Tarragon to her

previous listed success for Roger Varian and Fawzi Nass. A Saxon

Warrior (Jpn) half-sister to Ville De Grace is scheduled to sell at

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale through

Stauffenberg Bloodstock as lot 385.

We can also expect to see Le Havre's daughter Beholding (GB)

lining up in Pattern races before too long following her 12-length

victory at Kempton on Friday. This followed on from her

previous 10-length win in novice company at Lingfield. Her

Siyouni yearling half-brother is also entered for Book 1 though

breeder Newsells Park Stud as lot 109.

Updates Give You Wings It is 15 years since Dark Angel (Ire) won the G2 Mill Reef S.

before going on to take the G1 Middle Park S., and on Saturday

his son Wings Of War (Ire) landed the first part of that double

for Isa Salman Al KhalifaBBalso the owner of the aforementioned

BeholdingBBand trainer Clive Cox.

Wings Of War has a strong >O'Callaghan feel' to him, having

been bred by Guy O'Callaghan of Grangemore Stud, whose

parents Gay and Annette own Yeomanstown Stud where Dark

Angel has stood throughout his career. Moreover the colt is the

first foal of the listed-placed Futoon (Ire), a mare by Kodiac (GB),

the flagship stallion of Tally-Ho Stud, owned by Guy's uncle and

aunt, Tony and Anne O'Callaghan. Wings Of War is not only

following the example of his own sire in winning the Mill Reef

but his dam is out of a sister to Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil), who won

the same race in 2004 and went on to be runner-up in the

following year's G1 Golden Jubilee S.

Guy O'Callaghan is also the breeder of Dark Angel's son

Birchwood (Ire), the G2 Superlative S. winner who is now a

first-season sire in France. His Grangemore Stud draft for Book 2

of the October Yearling Sale includes the full-brother to Wings

Of War (lot 577), who is set to sell during the opening session.

An update on that colt from O'Callaghan can be found in our

accompanying preview for the Tattersalls Ireland September

Sale, in which he sells a draft of four yearlings over the next two

days.

She Was A Star In less than two hours on Saturday the full-siblings Foxes Tales

(Ire) and Astadash (Ire), both by Zoffany (Ire), went agonisingly

close to pulling off a Group 3 double in Britain and Ireland. King

Power Racing's 3-year-old Foxes Tales had already landed the

G3 Rose of Lancaster S. on his previous start and he was beaten

just a neck by Solid Stone (Ire) (Shamardal) when backing up in

the G3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup at Newbury.

For breeder Luke Barry of Manister House, arguably what

happened a little later at Gowran Park was even more important

when Astadash won the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades

Stud Fillies S. in the colours of Barry's mother Elizabeth and wife

Rebecca. The 4-year-old has now been retired and will replace

her mother Starfish (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the paddocks at the Co

Limerick farm.

Replace might be too strong a word to use as the celebrated

Starfish has set a very high bar for her daughter to follow. Her

second foal was the dual Group 1 winner La Collina (Ire)

(Strategic Prince {Ire}).

"Saturday was very special. Astadash

has been so consistent and she will

come home now. It's fantastic to have a

group-winning daughter of Starfish for

the farm. We couldn't afford to go and

buy a filly like her, and to have bred and

raced her is very special.".Luke Barry on Astadash

The Weekly Wrap Cont.

As well as Astadash and Foxes Tales, the mare also produced

the listed winner and Group 2

runner-up Fox Chairman (Ire)

(Kingman {GB}) and listed winner

Entsar (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})

among her nine winners from

nine foals of racing age.

Even those who didn't garner

black type were multiple scorers,

including the 11-time winner

Black Night (Ire) (Excellent Art

{GB}). Starfish died earlier this

year at the age of 18 after

foaling a Kingman filly.

"She never missed," said Luke

Barry of Starfish in Newmarket

on Monday morning as he

oversaw his draft for the

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale.

"Saturday was very special. Astadash has been so consistent

and she will come home now. It's fantastic to have a

group-winning daughter of Starfish for the farm. We couldn't

afford to go and buy a filly like her, and to have bred and raced

her is very special."

Starfish's offspring have been as consistently successful in the

sales ring as on the racetrack,

with four of her yearlings selling

for in excess of 260,000gns at

the October Sale. King Power

Racing paid 450,000gns and

400,000gns respectively for Fox

Chairman and Foxes Tales.

"She always produced very

good-looking stock who came

back here to Book 1 year after

year," said Barry, who also

celebrated being a Royal

Ascot-winning breeder this year

following the victory of Foxes

Tales in the Golden Gates H.

"We're very excited about him

as well," he added. "I know the

team behind him have big hopes that he could make up into a

Group 1 horse for next year."

been a huge contributor to British racing enjoying enormous

success over many years and it is a privilege to have his team of

24 beautifully bred fillies and mares selling at the forthcoming

Tattersalls December Sale. Sir Robert=s fillies and mares will

what happens with the weather through the week and go from

there.

AI was a bit worried about what she beat at Kempton, but it turns out I need not have been--with them being first and second in the Mill Reef.@ Cont. p11

Cheveley Park S. Cont.

Fellowes added, AYou don=t get to run in Cheveley Parks very often. She=s a very good filly, we=ve always felt that, so

providing the ground isn=t too quick I see no reason why we

won=t take our chance.

AThe rain on Sunday helped, and there is the possibility of showers later in the week.@

Another Cheveley Park S. supplement was George Boughey=s Corazon (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}), who won the G3 Prix

d=Arenberg on Sept. 2 and was third in the G2 Flying Childers S. on Sept. 10. Boughey will also saddle Thunder Love (GB)

(Profitable {Ire}).

The four-for-four Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who won the G3 Round Tower S., flies the flag for Juddmonte and Ger Lyons. Ismail Mohammed=s Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) enters on the back of victories in the G3 Princess Margaret S. in July and the G2 Lowther S. in August. Sandrine (GB) (Bobby=s Kitten), who won the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. and three-time group-placed Desert Dreamer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) were second and third, respectively in the Lowther.

Mohammed said, AShe=s in very good form--we worked her on Monday on the all weather, and she is flying. She=s in good nick up to now--we=ll work her on grass on Wednesday too. She=s changed a lot since the Group 2 and she=s doing very, very well.

AYou will 100% see her in the Cheveley Park next.@

Group winners Velocidad (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), successful in the G2 Airlie Stud S. from the yard of Joseph O=Brien and G3 Prix de Cabourg victress Have A Good Day (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) have also signed up. Listed winner Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Ire}) and the winning Tenebrism (Caravaggio) will also take part.

A CASE OF YOU TO BE SUPPLEMENTED TO

ABBAYE Group 1-placed A Case Of You (Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}) will be

supplemented to the G1 Qatar Prix de l=Abbaye on Oct. 3. The

Adrian McGuinness trainee, earlier a winner of the G3 Lacken S.

at Naas in May, was second in the G1 Derrinstown Stud Flying

Five S. at The Curragh on Sept. 12.

AHe=s going to be supplemented for the Abbaye, so he goes

there next week,@ McGuinness confirmed. AHe came out of his

race really well, he was bouncing and very happy. I think he=s

improved, it was his first time over five [furlongs] and I really am

looking forward to a big run there [ParisLongchamp].

APeople were telling me that he was a seven [furlong] horse

and that he needed six [furlongs], but he showed me a lot of

natural speed at home.

AThat=s why we decided to drop back to five, it was his first run

ever over five. For a 3-year-old to run for the first time ever over

five furlongs, taking on some of the best sprinters in training and

to finish the way he finished, you couldn=t complain.@

Depending on how the G3 Anglesey S. hero runs at

ParisLongchamp, an overseas venture to Del Mar in November is

not out of the question.

AWe=ll make plans after that, we=ll see which way the Abbaye

goes, but there is a possibility that if he ran well he might go to

the Breeders= Cup,@ he said. AEither way I do think he=s definitely

going to get better, he=s an exciting horse to look forward to for

the future.@

RACLETTE CONFIRMED FOR BOUSSAC The undefeated >TDN Rising Star= Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB})

will head for the Oct. 3 Prix Marcel Boussac at ParisLongchamp

next. A winner when unveiled at Deauville on Aug. 8, the bay

Juddmonte colourbearer added a conditions races at Chantilly

on Sept. 17.

AShe was very impressive last time out and she is probably one

of the best fillies I have ever trained--she=s got everything,@ said

trainer Andre Fabre.

AShe has acceleration, a wonderful temperament, so far she is

doing everything right. We=ll go for the Boussac with her next.

AIt is quite a big step going from a conditions race to a Group 1,

but she was way better than her opponents last time. I can=t see

why quicker ground would be an issue as she has a beautiful

action.

AShe has already won over a mile so the dream would be the

Prix de Diane and the Arc, but there=s also a lot of speed on the

dam=s side so hopefully she=d go for the Guineas first.@

Fabre also provided an update on the benched Group 1 winner

Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who was recovering from

an injury. Cont. p12

Ger Lyons and Colin Keane are the men of the moment in

Monday as TDN Rising Star Straight Answer recorded an

impressive success in this six-furlong test. Handling soft ground

the homebred led at every step on this good-to-firm going en

route to a comprehensive success from some useful yardsticks.

AHe=s a work in progress,@ Shane Lyons said. AGer and Barry

Trail, by Pulpit) (lot 38) topped the Emirates Racing Authority

Racing in Dubai September Sale on Saturday. He was knocked

down for AED825,000 to Satish Seemar of Zabeel Stables after

being previously campaigned by Godolphin and Andre Fabre.

Another that went to Seemar was the day=s second highest

priceBRoyal Mews (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), a 4-year-old gelding. Out of

Queen Arabella (GB) (Medicean {GB}), lot 37 brought

AED520,000 and won once at three. Rounding out the top three

horses from the 41-strong sale was Al Nefud (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

The gelded son of Albashara (Arch) (lot 34) was yet another lot

bound for Zabeel Stables after bringing AED425,000.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS

by Chris McGrath

It=s as though we have walked out to the very last among the

thousands of volcanic rock columns that comprise the Giant=s

Causeway, and the sea is now lapping round our ankles. But

though we probably shouldn=t place undue pressure on the

stone beneath our feet, it might just support a final expansion of

perspective on a horse that truly measured up to his naming for

a geological phenomenon.

For the scintillating debut of Classic Causeway on the main

track at Saratoga a couple of weeks ago permits us to hope that

a finishing flourish might yet be added to the legacy of one of

the most influential stallions of the modern era.

This is one of just three named colts eked from a handful of

last coverings by Giant=s Causeway, who died in April 2018.

(There was apparently one live daughter, too, but she does not

appear to have been registered.) And his trainer Brian Lynch is

optimistic that he may have the potential to bring his sire to a

posthumous milestone by inching him up from his present

aggregate of 99 graded stakes winners.

One step at a time: but Classic Causeway certainly dominated

some fancied rivals, representing powerful operations, before

cutting loose by six and a half lengths in the stretch. Lynch is

proposing to test the water for the Breeders= Cup in the GI

Claiborne Breeders= Futurity at Keeneland Oct. 9.

BOOK 4 OPENS WITH MORE COMPETITIVE

BIDDING by Jessica Martini

The Keeneland September Yearling Sale marched into its

second week with continued competitive bidding as the

auction=s Book 4 section opened Monday in Lexington.

AThere is unbelievable trade here today,@ said consignor Peter

O=Callaghan of Woods Edge Farm. AThere is just a huge crowd up

there. And they=d knock you down for a good horse. I=m actually

not surprised it=s this strong. Not with the way it started and the

amount of people who have not yet got to buy horses. It was

clear that trickle down effect was going to happen.@

During Monday=s session, 319 yearlings grossed $27,330,000.

The average of $85,674 soared 76.31% over the 2020 Book 4

opener and the median was up 50% to $60,000. With 52 horses

reported not sold, the buy-back rate was just 14.02%.

AIt was a feeding frenzy,@ Gainesway=s Brian Graves said of

Monday=s trade. AThat=s all. It was just an absolute feeding

frenzy. I think that right now the soft spot in the market is at the

top, with the absence of Sheikh Mohammed and Shadwell. If

there is any soft spot in the market, it=s for turf-type horses with

European appeal. The tip-top could be considered a little bit soft

and probably some good buys were made. And once you get

into Book 2, and especially Books 3 and 4, that=s where the

turnover is and it=s extremely strong.@

A colt from the first crop of Mo Town brought the session=s top

bid when trainer Tom Amoss purchased the yearling for

$450,000 on behalf of a partnership of clients. The session-

topper was consigned by Gainesway, which was the day=s

leading consignor with 27 sold for $3,262,000.

The yearling was one of three to reach the $400,000 mark

Monday and five to bring $300,000 or more. The top price at the

opening Book 4 session of the 2020 September sale--which was

held amidst the uncertainty of the pre-vaccination pandemic--

was $210,000. Cont. p8

Classic Causeway | Sarah Andrew

They Might Be Giants cont. from p1

Classic Causeway was homebred by Patrick O=Keefe (of

Kentucky West Racing) and Clarke M. Cooper from the Thunder

Gulch mare Private World, herself a smart juvenile back in 2005.

AOld friends of mine from

California bred him,@ Lynch

explains. AAnd they asked me to

go and have a look at him as a

yearling: if I liked him, I could go

ahead and put him into training.

And I did, he had some sort of

presence about him: strong, lot

of bone, just a real well-made

colt.@

So the youngster was sent to

Margaux Farm to be prepared

for his track career.

AAs they started on him, he

was still a plain brown paper

bag,@ Lynch recalls. AHe didn=t

really impress them too much,

early--but as they started to do more with him, they started to

like him more. And when we got him into training, about the

beginning of June, it was the same thing: the more we did with

him, the more we began to see the talent. And once we started

breezing, it was very obvious he could run.@

In those first, tentative works at Churchill, Classic Causeway

volunteered himself for service at Saratoga, where Lynch was

delighted to be taking a barn

again after sitting out the

pandemic meet last year.

AAs we got some more serious

work into him, he definitely

stood out as a Saratoga 2-year-

old,@ Lynch says. AHe was one of

those that just never missed a

beat: never had a pimple, never

left an oat. Every work you gave

him, he came out a better horse

than he went into it. He loved

going to the gate, loved breaking

from the gate. He=s just been a

very easy, precocious horse who

loves to train.

AYou send him to the top of

the mountain, he looks down and says: >What=s next, boss?=

Where some of these 2-year-olds won=t be halfway up before

they=re saying, >Oh, my toe=s sore,= or >I got a kink in my tail.=@

Giant's Causeway (left) battled Tiznow down to the wire in the

2000 GI Breeders' Cup Classic | Horsephotos

AHe=s just always been a tough, hardy horse,@ Lynch continued.

AI always say we=re not hard on them, but if they do have some

run to them, we=ll ask them for a bit of it along the way. And

every time we=ve asked him, he=s just taken that step up.@

The Australian-born conditioner remains mystified that so

many rivals here confine their young horses to half-mile works,

maybe five-eighths at a push. But as a son of such a venerable

two-turn influence, and moreover out of a mare by a Belmont

winner, Classic Causeway was given the chance to bed down his

speed and precocity in a deeper foundation.

AI always had it mind to run him seven-eighths at Saratoga, so I

got some good 1200-meter drills into him,@ Lynch explains. AAnd

you know, for a 2-year-old to be able to work in 1:12 and

change, it=s like when you watch the kids play footy that just

have all the mechanics: they know how to kick the ball, how to

pass, how to tackle. He just knew how to do everything.@

Sure enough, Classic Causeway proved far too natural a runner

for his pursuers on debut.

AI was absolutely thrilled,@ Lynch admits. AThose are expensive

horses, at Saratoga, but he just broke and took it to them. The

farther they went, the farther he was going to win by. He=s come

out of his race like the ultimate professional, too. So if he can

run well at Keeneland next month, he=d have the GI Breeders=

Cup Juvenile as a target to head for.@

Lynch is humbly aware of this colt=s status as a Acollector=s

item@ and would be honored if he could carve a fresh memorial

to Giant=s Causeway.

AI followed his career in Europe with Aidan [O=Brien] and then

to run a race like that, first time on the dirt [in the GI Breeders'

Cup Classic in 2000], showed what an incredible racehorse he

was,@ he remarks. AThat stretch duel with Tiznow have to go

down there as one of the great Breeders= Cup Classics, it ranks

up there with Blame and Zenyatta.@ Cont. p5

The late Giant's Causeway | Coolmore

Giant=s Causeway left a number of potential heirs at stud but

none, so far, can challenge Shamardal, actually a member of his

very first crop. Though he, too, has departed since the loss of

the patriarch, Shamardal gave the male line a robust presence in

Europe, notably through the rise of Lope de Vega (Ire) at

Ballylinch in Ireland.

True to his own versatility, however, Giant=s Causeway was

also a historic achiever in North America, only overtaken this

summer by Tapit for the all-time progeny earnings record. He is,

moreover, proving as important a broodmare sire as always

seemed likely in a son of Storm Cat and a Rahy mare, with

freshman sensation Gun Runner already promising dramatic

enhancement to this dimension of Athe Iron Horse@.

That soubriquet reminds us how very wholesome an influence

we=re celebrating here. Hopefully, then, Giant=s Causeway will

draw out some similarly ferrous elements in the pedigree of

Classic Causeway, which combines some considerable contrasts

in terms of soundness.

His dam Private World won her first three (including two

stakes) before tailing off in the GI Starlet S. and then managing

only a couple of sophomore starts. Kentucky West had bred her

from an Arkansas-bred mare named Rita Rucker, by a forgotten

son of Danzig, Dmitri, who himself made only one start. Rita

Rucker, in contrast, won no fewer than 21 of 72, albeit at a very

modest level. Mated with Point Given--a son, of course, of

Private World=s sire Thunder Gulch--Rita Rucker produced a colt

named Point Encounter, whose solitary start at Santa Anita was

so impressive that he, like Dmitri, was given a chance at stud.

(Private World, incidentally, has remained a regular client at

Ashford since the loss of Giant=s Causeway, resulting in a

yearling filly by Lookin At Lucky and a weanling colt by Justify.)

As for Giant=s Causeway, his two other parting shots both have

auspicious antecedents. Cont. p6

Tom Conway | Sarah Andrew

Giant Game, bred by H. Allen Poindexter out of graded-stakes

producer Game For More (More Than Ready), realized $500,000

from a very shrewd partnership, between Albaugh Family

Stables and West Point Thoroughbreds, at Fasig-Tipton last year.

His debut for Dale Romans at Churchill last Saturday had been

preceded by some very brisk works and he shaped extremely

well in rallying for third after a green break.

The other Giant=s Causeway colt, Shadwell homebred

Monaadah, is in training with Saeed bin Suroor in England. But

the one who=s up and running is Classic Causeway. Morale is

high in the Lynch barn, following three wins at the lucrative

Kentucky Downs meet, and $17,000 weanling Red Danger (Orb)

will also be given a chance to target the Breeders= Cup after

following up his own Saratoga maiden success in the $500,000

Global Tote Juvenile Sprint S. And, having launched multiple

graded stakes winner Giant Gizmo while working for the

Stronach family=s Woodbine division, Lynch certainly valued the

compliment when someone remarked how much of their sire

could be seen in Classic Causeway.

AAnd he does possess a lot of his father in him,@ he agrees.

AWhen I think of how gutsy Giant=s Causeway was, coming down

the lane with Tiznow, I just hope we can keep this one healthy

and sound. Because he=s potentially a very nice horse in the

making.@

HORSE OWNER TOM CONWAY PASSES

AWAY AT 83by Bill Finley

Tom Conway, a prominent Kentucky attorney who owned

2010 GI Blue Grass S. winner Stately Victor (Ghostzapper) in

partnership with his son, Jack, passed away Saturday at the age

of 83.

Conway was attending the races at Kentucky Downs Sept. 11

when he fell and suffered multiple fractures. That led to

complications that caused his death.

After graduating from Western Kentucky University, Conway

served as U.S. Army police officer stationed in West Germany.

With funding from the G.I. Bill, he went to law school at the

University of Louisville and was admitted to the bar in 1968.

Conway, a trial attorney, embarked on a legal career that

spanned more than 50 years. Specializing in personal injury

litigation, he won some of the largest civil verdicts in Kentucky

history.

Conway had been an owner for about 40 years and continued

to campaign a small stable up until the time of his death.

AHe grew up on a farm in western Kentucky surrounded by

ponies, horses, donkeys,@ said Jack Conway, who is the former

Attorney General of Kentucky. AHis dad would travel up to Ellis

Park and bet. He liked to take his boys and talk to them about

horse racing. My dad grew up with the sport.@

After winning the Blue Grass, Stately Victor finished eighth in

the GI Kentucky Derby. Jack Conway said those days were

magical.

AIt was a thrill of a lifetime,@ he said. AI=ve been going to the

Derby since I was 16 and every year we=d look out at that turn

and watch them bring their horses over for the Derby.@ Cont. p7

Conway also campaigned GIII Kentucky Cup Turf S. winner

General Jumbo (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and GIII Matt Winn S. winner

KEESEP Book 4 Opener cont. from p1 AIt=s been extremely strong,@ bloodstock agent Ben McElroysaid of the market. AI thought it was going to be strong going in,with the purses being so high--there are four or five trackswhere maiden special weights are running for $100,000--and Ithink everybody is feeling good and hopefully getting back tonormalcy. I think there is so much enthusiasm, it=s reflected inthe yearling prices.@ The Keeneland September sale continues through Friday withsessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Mo Town Colt Completes the Ensemble It may not have been one of the colt-buying partnerships inthe headlines this past week at Keeneland, but Tom Amoss wasquietly assembling a package of four potential Classic horses fora new partnership of 10 of his existing clients. The trainer madehis highest purchase of the auction when going to $450,000 toacquire a colt by Mo Town (Uncle Mo) (hip 2242) in the name ofEnsemble Stables. AI have tremendous respect for the Uncle Mo line,@ Amoss saidof the yearling=s appeal. AI bought Mo Tom from his first crop. When I saw this horse today, I really liked what I saw. This is areally special athlete, in my opinion. I am fully aware that thiswas an awful lot--and maybe the highest Mo Town that will sellthis year--but I am confident he is an athlete.@

Mo Tom, purchased for $150,000 at the 2014 KeenelandSeptember sale, went on to win the 2016 GIII Lecomte S. andearned over $665,000 for G M B Racing. Joel Politi, owner of the Amoss-trained 2019 GI Kentucky Oakswinner Serengeti Empress, spearheaded the new partnership. AThe trend has been for people to come together and partnerup so they can buy better horses,@ Amoss said. AWe are seeingthat a lot at the sales. I might be a little late to the party, butJoel Politi put this group together. We call it Ensemble Stablesbecause it is an ensemble of people. And we are excited.@ In addition to the Mo Town colt, Amoss also purchased a coltby West Coast (hip 1110) for $70,000, a son of Runhappy (hip 1706) and a colt by Midnight Storm (hip 1863) for $45,000. AWe have completed the group with those four,@ Amoss said. Of the focus on colts, he explained, AIt=s what appeals to thegroup. The group was formed with the idea of trying to get anopportunity to win the Kentucky Derby. We wanted to get alottery ticket to the Derby. And right now we=ve got four lotterytickets.@ Consigned by Gainesway, the session-topping son of first-cropsire Mo Town is out of Closing Move (Bernardini), a half-sister tothe dam of multiple graded stakes winner Stanford (MalibuMoon) and stakes winner and multiple graded placed HedgeFund (Super Saver).

The dark bay was purchased by Stella Stables for $75,000 at

last year=s Keeneland November sale.

AHe was one that Danielle Jones and I had bought last year,@

explained Gainesway=s Brian Graves. ADanielle has worked at

Gainesway for many years. She wanted to get some horses on

her farm and we picked that one out together. She took him

home and prepped him and she did a great job with him. She

was partners with Gainesway on him.@

The session-topper is one of 14 yearlings by Mo Town to have

sold so far at the September sale for a total of $1,916,000. The

Coolmore stallion also had fillies sell for $275,000 (hip 1905) and

$255,000 (hip 1014) and a colt sell for $200,000 (hip 2118).

Ten Broeck Farm Back for More Munnings David Mowat=s Ten Broeck Farm, which has enjoyed Grade I

success with Kimari (Munnings), added another daughter of the

Coolmore stallion to its roster when bloodstock agent Ben

McElroy signed the ticket at $400,000 on hip 2163 Monday at

Keeneland.

AShe was the spitting image of Kimari as a yearling,@ McElroy

said. AI saw her yesterday and she was the one we had to have.

We tried on a couple of fillies yesterday and got outbid, but

since I saw her yesterday, I always had a preference for this

filly.@

McElroy signed the ticket at $152,000 to acquire Kimari at the

2018 Fasig-Tipton July sale. The bay filly, second in Royal Ascot

engagements in the 2019 G2 Queen Mary S. and 2020 G1

Commonwealth Cup, earned her top-level success in the GI

Madison S. in April for trainer Wesley Ward.

Hip 2163 was bred by Gail Radke=s Asiel Stable and was

consigned by Lane=s End. She is out of Vitae (Awesome Again), a

daughter of multiple stakes winner Bonita Meadow

(Meadowlake) and a half-sister to multiple stakes winner

Meadow Bride (Runaway Groom).

AWhen she walked in the back walking ring, she was all class,@

McElroy said. AShe=s a May foal and there is a lot to look forward

to.@

Asked who would train the filly, McElroy said, AWe will

probably stick to the same plan as Kimari.@

Practical Joke Colt Continues Strong Sale for

O=Callaghan Peter O=Callaghan=s Woods Edge Farm has had a bang-up

Keeneland September sale, led by a mixture of popular

homebreds and prescient pinhook prospects. The consignment

had another strong session Monday with a colt by Practical Joke

(hip 2070) bringing $285,000 to top the operation=s returns on

the day. The bay yearling was purchased by O=Callaghan for

$110,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton November sale.

AHe is an outstanding physical,@ O=Callaghan said. AHe was a

real powerhouse of a foal and a very good representation of

Practical Joke. You=d see a lot of Practical Joke in him, but you=d

also see Elusive Quality--those really good Elusive Qualitys who

are big, masculine horses. And he was exactly one of those. We

had all sorts of interest in him at the sale and he sold

accordingly.@ Cont. p10

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 12 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • SEPTEMBER 21, 2021

Beyond the popular pinhook, Woods Edge was strong

throughout the Book 4 opener Monday as demand continued to

be high.

AWe=ve had a bonanza of a day,@ O=Callaghan said. AWe got

$230,000 for a homebred Bolt d=Oro filly with a $79,000 reserve.

We got $200,000 for a Mo Town colt with a $59,000 reserve and

$150,000 for a Goldencents who was the second horse in the

ring. We didn=t sell two in the ring, but we sold one shortly after

and then the other one will be sold soon, I=d imagine.@

Woods Edge, which had homebred success with a $1.05-

million son of City of Light, has sold 34 yearlings through the first

week of the September sale for $9,815,000.

AIt=s been a great sale,@ O=Callaghan said. AWe had a very

strong crop of horses this year, the homebreds and the bought

foals. It was a good mix of horses. We weren=t in on the foals too

deep, our spending was way down last year. It all fit in just right.

We are breeding a lot more of them now, so we don=t have to

chase [the foals] as hard. I still like to buy them and we need to

buy them. There is just no fun in these $300,000 foals. You have

to keep it to where enough people can bid for them. But

everyone is trying to do that. We are all trying to do that and

everyone knows it. It=s up to ourselves to be disciplined.@

COVID-RELATED TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS TO

EASE Edited Press Release

The White House Monday announced plans to ease COVID-19

travel restrictions into the United States by foreign visitors from

33 countries, including the United Kingdom and European

Union, starting in November. The move is expected to clear the

way to make it easier for foreign nationals to attend important

equine-related events in the United States like the Breeders=

Cup World Championships in California and the November

breeding stock sales at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland in Kentucky.

The new rules will require all foreign nationals from the

impacted countries arriving in the United States to show proof

of being fully vaccinated and a negative COVID test taken within

three days of flight, according to the White House.

AThis is very welcome news as Thoroughbred breeding and

racing in the United States continues to rebound from the

negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic,@ said NTRA

President and Chief Executive Officer Alex Waldrop.

The progressive Samurai Charm retained a perfect record at

this Orange County facility with a battling success in Sunday's

Dark Mirage S.

Kicked straight into the lead by Kyle Frey from the inside stall,

the dark bay set a decent pace while racing off the inside and

built an imposing advantage passing the quarter pole. She began

to waver in the stretch, weaving in and out and though clear

into the final furlong, drifted out a sixteenth from home and just

held sway. Velvet Slippers, last of the quintet for the opening

three-quarters of a mile, came with a late rally to just miss.

A maiden winner for $50,000 at second asking at this venue in

September 2019, Samurai Charm returned from a 22-month

absence to take a $50,000 starter-allowance going 5 1/2 panels

here July 2. A very impressive 9 1/4-length winner at the same

level down at Del Mar Aug. 13, she backed up on just nine days'

rest to take a first-level allowance at the seaside oval by 3/4 of a

length.

The 33rd black-type winner for Claiborne's First Samurai,

Samurai Charm descends from the family of champion

GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Caressing (Honour and

Glory), the dam of Eclipse Award winner West Coast (Flatter)

and the granddam of this year's G1 Yasuda Kinen hero Danon

Kingly (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Click for the Equibase.com

Awesomely Shy | Coady

IN ORDER OF PURSE:

2nd-Indiana Grand, $34,000, Msw, 9-20, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f, 1:04.86,

sy, 3 1/4 lengths.

AWESOMELY SHY (f, 2, Gormley--Awesome Story, by Awesome

Again) was pegged at morning-line odds of 9-2, but was

completely friendless in the market and was off at 12.50-1 for a

high-percentage outfit based south and east at Belterra Park.

Straightened out after breaking a bit to her right, the homebred

cut out a decent pace on the front end, increased her advantage

in upper stretch and was punched out to best even-money

Abuela's Humor (Distorted Humor) by 3 1/4 lengths. The 10th

winner for her freshman sire (by Malibu Moon), Awesomely Shy

is out of a winning daughter of MSW Drexel Monorail

(Glitterman), herself a full-sister to the useful MGSW sprinter

Champali. Awesome Story foaled a full-sister to the winner this

year and was bred back to Cloud Computing. Lifetime Record:

1-1-0-0, $20,400. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

3rd-Indiana Grand, $34,000, Msw, 9-20, 2yo, 5f (off turf),

1:00.15, sy, 1 1/4 lengths.

SPEIGHTY WAR (c, 2, Java's War--Speighty Girl, by

Speightstown) jumped alertly in this rained-off affair, but was

outsprinted by 2-5 Tapped Off (Tapiture), who went several

lengths clear while appearing to race greenly on the turn. The

heavy favorite looked to have the race in safe keeping as they

hit the stretch, but he was running on empty at the sixteenth

pole, and Java's War raced over the top of that one on his

incorrect lead en route to a 1 1/4-length success. Private Connie

(Fusaichi Pegasus) was up late for second. Speighty War is out of

a daughter of three-time GISW Jersey Girl (Belong to Me),

whose son Jersey Town (Speightstown) won the GI Hill 'n' Dale

Cigar Mile H. Speighty Girl has a yearling full-brother to Speighty

War and a colt foal by Tale of Verve. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0,

DYNAMIC MIMI (f, 2, Exaggerator--One More {GSP, $162,884},

by Holy Bull), a 53-10 shot on career debut, showed good early

interest to stalk the pace outside of Bork (Malibu Moon) through

an opening half-mile in :45.91. Asked to come after that rival in

upper stretch, the chestnut was in front a furlong out and

outbattled Bork to the wire. Dynamic Mimi has a yearling half-

sister by Violence and a foal half-brother named Right This Way

(Street Sense). One More was most recently bred to Midnight

MARK THE MOOSE (g, 2, Mark Valeski--Holiday Kiss, by

Harlan's Holiday) covered a bit of ground and was an even

fourth on his six-furlong debut over this track Sept. 8 and was

getting two turns here as the 27-10 second choice. The bay

showed enough speed to make the running had Mario Pino

elected to do so, but instead he was hard held inside and just off

the pace to the backstretch. Still restrained behind a wall of

three horses at the top of the lane, the bay was angled out and

took some time to find his best stride, but got to the wire a half-

length better than favored Wingspun (Hard Spun). Mark the

Moose is out of a half-sister to GISW Request For Parole (Judge
