Motivation: noun“The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way; the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.”I don’t know about the rest of you all, but this summer has been very difficult for me to focus on
photography. I find that without the impetus of the in-person photo club activities, I have tended to leave my camera on the shelf. Not only are our activities limited by the COVID-19 restrictions but it has been REALLY hot out there. Motivation is sometime hard to come by. How does one motivate oneself to do anything? There are plenty of websites with articles about staying motivated. Here’s one: petapixel.com/2009/07/31/13-tips-for-staying-motivated-in-photography/. And another: https://motivated-inspired-photography/. One more: digital-photography-school.com/get-motivated-photography/. Google “motivation + photography” and you will be overwhelmed with results. There are hundreds of helpful articles out there.Basically it comes down to making the effort. Carry your camera everywhere with you, change your habit patterns, start a project, force yourself to get out every day, if possible, to make some photographs AND participate in the CPC offerings, whether online or in groups or by yourself. For the last few months, we have provided activities that stay within the Social Distancing guidelines and hope that you all have been out with your camera making photos. Early on we tried weekly assignments to be posted to Shutterfly, monthly digital contests, and Coffee & Cameras Outdoors. In July there was a field trip to Tryon Gardens and another to Brock’s Mill Pond. In August we gave you Down East on Your Own. And for September, there will be a Backyard Scavenger Hunt.

Carol Krom, President Coastal Photo Club
Granted these last two field trips are not group oriented but having the feedback of the “judges” on our photos will help bring us back into the fold. We will continue to have Coffee & Cameras Outdoors and when the weather starts cooling down a bit, we hope to see more of you out there. We are still here and working hard to help you stay motivated and involved with the club and photography If you haven’t yet renewed your club membership, please consider doing that. You’ll be glad you did!

Check Out This Photography Online ForumUgly Hedgehog (uglyhedgehog.com) is a photographer’s forum that allows photographers to pose questions and share experiences to answer the questions posed. They also have their photo contests, as well as a challenges & periodicals section where members can identify subject specific challenges and participants can share their photos. They also provide a photo gallery so a UHH member can share a series or group of photos they have taken. It then allows members to chime in with comments. UHH also has a section for
General Chit-Chat (non-photography talk) and a section for members to Buy/Sell/Trade (Classifieds). Subscribing to UHH will get you all of this every day, and it’s all free. Try it out, and see if it’s something that helps you.

ITEMS of INTEREST
One Tough Piece of EquipmentA few weeks ago, I was doing some late afternoon/early evening shooting at Martin Marietta Park off Glenburnie Road in New Bern. As I was packing up to leave, my brand new remote shutter release fell out of my bag into the sandy area near the water's edge. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it until I got home and started unpacking my gear. By that time, it was already dark so I couldn't return to the park. That's when the rain began to fall.
When I returned to the park the next day, I found the shutter release half buried in the damp sand and grass. I didn't have much hope, but after letting it dry and removing the accumulated sand ... it worked.
Third-party gear can be hit or miss, but I have to give high marks to the Vello FreeWave remote shutter release.

"Shots are of my former wife, Carol (on the right) and her best bud at the time, Ann (on the left).
"This has meaning to me as every once in a while you have a shoot where you can do no wrong, where every capture is beautiful, and the only problem you have is which image do I pick.
"This was one of them.
"And the ladies were ecstatic. I recently came across the ancient Tri-X negatives, scanned them, sent files to both of them, and they swooned again."
- Alan Welch
If you have a photograph you have taken that has a special meaning or story behind it, please email it to Dave Hilbert (address is listed in the weekly CPC email).
The emphasis should be on the meaning or story, not necessarily the quality of the photo.
Remember to resize your photos to 100 ppi, 900 px on the long edge and no larger than 2 MB.

We left home before sunrise to catch the morning light of Atlantic, N.C.
After riding for an hour-and-a-half in our air conditioned car, we arrived at the marina in Atlantic just as the beautiful morning light was coming through. Feeling happy to have made the effort to get an early start, I stepped out of the car with some great photo ops right in front of me.
As those magic hour minutes were quickly ticking away, I aimed my camera at this classic old boat with sunlight streaming under the dock … and what did I see but a fogged up lens. Ugh! I tried wiping it off to no avail. The fog kept reappearing over and over for about five minutes until my camera had enough time to adjust to the heat and humidity of the Down East summertime conditions. In the meantime I snapped a few photos with my iPhone which turned out pretty good.
Here are two photos: the original (below left) and the same foggy photo post processed using Topaz Studio (below right). My favorite part of the scene was where the golden sunlight was streaming under the dock creating a beautiful luminescence. Even though the corrected photo is not totally to my liking, I do like the way the light shows on the side of the boat as it reflects what my eye saw at that magic minute in time.
