9. Create a Transition Center with flyers and other dis-trict, school, NBK SLO resources, and community re-sources for parents and staff.

10. Recognize Month of Military Child in your community via district and/or school webpages, school news-letters, school and community readerboards, and encouraging the local paper to do an article.

11. Have a writing contest about military life or to say “thanks” to military families. Read winning entries over announcements or at an assembly.

12.Give military children and children of veterans the opportunity to assist with Veterans Day activities.

13. Tie ribbons on a tree at the school as a visual remind-er of each military family.

14. Have a display in the school library on topics such as deployment, transitions, military service branches .

15. Share your school’s activities with other schools!

The Month of the Military Family celebrates the contribu-tions and resiliency of military children and their families. Plan now for how you can show your support for military families in your chool buildings. Work with your students, staff, PTA or Boosters to do recognition.

Here are a few ideas:

1. Encourage leadership by military students in the planning and implementation of the activities. Trevor Romain’s An-chored 4 Life Program is coming to some schools with high military numbers in Kitsap County . Let me know if you’d like info.

2. Have students create a banner each year to hang at the school entrance, on the fence, in the commons or gym for the month.

3. Create a postcard with the banner design on one side; write your thanks and give to a military family, individually or in an assembly.

4. Design a bulletin board with photos of all military children in the school.

5.Have announcements where facts are shared about mili-tary families, followed by a public “thank you” for their ser-vice to our country.

6. At an assembly or recognition tea, give a certificate of thanks to each military family. Invite military leadership or principal or military parents to hand them out to the fami-lies.

7. Invite some military parents or other service members in uniform to your school for Q+A sessions in classrooms or at an assembly. Discuss/have children write out questions in advance of the visit to prevent inappropriate questions.

8. Read books to students about military families or deploy-

ment.
