Gathering for 50th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate at USM in Portland on November 10

Distinguished representatives of the Roman Catholicism, Judaism, and Islam faiths will speak at “Beyond Nostra Aetate: Interreligious Dialogue in a Time of Conflict,” scheduled for Hannaford Hall in the Abromson Center at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday, November 10, at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend this special

event, and admission is free. Nostra Aetate (Latin for “In Our Time”) is the Vatican II declaration that addressed the relations of the Catholic Church with other religions. Released fifty years ago (October 28, 1965), it advised Catholics to respect and reach out to their non-Christian neighbors in an effort to establish a new climate promoting understanding and dialogue between faiths. The gathering will include a discussion featuring Bishop Arthur L. Kennedy, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston; Rabbi David Sandmel, a founding rabbi of South Portland’s Congregation Bet Ha’am; and Imam Yahya Hendi, the Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University. The Abromson Center is located at 88 Bedford Street in Portland. For more information, contact Abraham Peck at [email protected], Reza Jalali at [email protected], or Lori Whittemore at [email protected].

Engaging Parents: Forming Family Faith Workshop

in Portland on November 12

“Engaging Parents: Forming Family Faith,” a workshop which will offer ways for parish communities to engage parents and help families to grow in faith together, will be held at the Chancery offices in Portland on Thursday, November 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Videoconferencing will also be available in Caribou and Brewer. The workshop will be presented by the Center for Ministry Development. In July, Pope Francis proclaimed, "How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith!" Won't you join us to learn how you as a parish leader can help parents transmit faith to their children while deepening their own relationship with God? This workshop will give you a better understanding of today's parents and strategies for reaching out to this new breed of parents. It will offer ways to support them in deepening their own faith at home and in the parish, and through service and outreach together. For more information or to register, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/olff/engaging-parents.

Journey Retreat, “Steeped in Mercy, Offered in Love,” in Auburn on Nov. 20-22

Journey, an annual retreat for youth who seek to grow in and deepen their relationships with one another and with Christ, is scheduled for November 20-22 at Saint Dominic Academy in Auburn. This year’s theme is “Steeped in Mercy, Offered in Love.” Based on the “Youth 2000” retreat, Journey is centered on Christ, particularly as we encounter him so intimately in the Scriptures, the Eucharist, and confession. After being immersed in these experiences of his mercy, Journey presenters also invite young people to respond to Jesus by faithfully serving God and neighbor in union with Our Lady and all the saints. Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate Mass on Saturday and spend time with the gathering. The cost is $90 per student or parish chaperone. If a family is not able to afford the full cost, youth ministers should contact the diocese at [email protected] so that organizers can send a scholarship request form. It is very important that financial concerns not keep any youth from participating. For more information or to register, visit [email protected].
