Except iona l Medic ine. Extraord inary Care.

In 2003, through the generosity of our donors, the

Mercy Hospital Foundation made gifts totaling

$457,000 to Mercy Iowa City. The following stories

bring real-life application to some of these gifts and

also introduce you to a very special donor who has

embraced Mercy through his steady giving.

The largest portion of the Foundation’s gift to

Mercy is directed to the purchase of medical

equipment identified by hospital staff. The feature

on the cardiovascular department and Dr. Hopson

shows how these gifts impact patient care and place

cutting-edge instrumentation in the hands of our

gifted medical staff.

Beyond equipment, the Foundation is partnering

with the hospital to cultivate the caregivers of

tomorrow to ensure that the extraordinary care you

have come to expect will always be here for you and

your loved ones. Kelsey Deeds is one of eighteen area

high school seniors awarded the Health Career

Scholarship in 2003 and 2004, which provides a $1,000

yearly scholarship, renewable for up to four years.

In addition to these scholarships, the Foundation

continues to fund the Nursing Education Endowment

Fund, which awards education grants to Mercy

employees seeking a degree in nursing.

Finally, you will learn about the successful “Line

Meets Curve” campaign, inspired by Dr. M.J. Haworth,

who has a passion for music and a vision to bring the

healing gift of music to patients at Mercy.

In the coming year, the Foundation is pledged

to continue to support these programs, launch

the Foundation Education Forum series, and again

make a significant contribution to patient care by

purchasing important medical equipment, including

all the items requested by the cardiovascular

department and the nursery.

Your gift to the Annual Fund is critical in enabling

the Foundation to support Mercy Iowa City in its

mission, begun 131 years ago by the founding Sisters

of Mercy, to heal and comfort the sick. Please know

that Foundation staff members are also here to help

direct a memorial gift, to explore a planned gift, or

answer any questions about how your gift to the

Mercy Hospital Foundation can be directed according

to your wishes.

We are also grateful to our Board of Directors

which volunteers its time to guide the Foundation

and carry the message of caring to others in the

community. Thank you for your confidence in Mercy

Hospital and for your support of our work.

Sincerely,

Richard Oberman

Letter to Our Donors

Mission:

Mercy Hospital Foundation was incorporated in 1969

as a separate not-for-profit corporation to raise private

support for Mercy Iowa City’s facilities and programs.

Its sole mission, in conjunction with Mercy Iowa City

and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, is to:

• Generate financial support for Mercy Iowa City’s

primary and specialized health care services

• Manage, invest and disburse all funds efficiently

and with regard to donor intentions

Vision:

• To maximize private contributions for the ongoing

and future needs of Mercy Iowa City and the

communities it serves

Values:

• Respect: Treat each donor with dignity, honoring his

or her wishes for acknowledgement.

• Excellence: Vigorously and ethically seek outside

resources to support the mission of the hospital.

• Compassion: Show empathy and care for the

specific stewardship wishes of our donors.

• Stewardship: Direct donations and investment

income responsibly.

• Collaboration: Work with staff, volunteers, donors,

and other organizations for the good of those we

serve and the greater community.

Our Mission, Vision & Values

Off the eastern Philippine island of Samar, October 25,

1944—Five escort carrier task units of the U.S. Navy’s

Seventh Fleet engage the numerically superior

Japanese main force. After a ferocious two-hour

battle, five American ships are lost, including the

U.S.S. Gambier Bay. Along with 3,000 surviving

shipmates, a young Navy signalman named John

Crawford floats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for

the next 45 hours, fending off hunger, thirst, and the

ever-circling sharks.

Though many were lost to exposure and predators,

the majority of the Gambier Bay’s crew were

eventually picked up by Navy patrol vessels. After

being taken below deck to recuperate, his lips

blistered by sun and salt water, Crawford’s first post-

rescue meal of reconstituted tomato soup tasted,

according to him, “like heaven.” He would know

that familiar sensation again 45 years later after a very

different battle.

In 1989, Crawford’s second life-or-death battle occurred

when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer at Mercy

Hospital. His internist, Dr. Neal Llewellyn, “scoped”

his stomach with a tiny camera, allowing him to view

the organ’s interior on a television monitor. What

looked, in Crawford’s estimation, “like a navy bean”

on the back wall of his stomach was actually a plum-

sized malignant mass that needed to be removed.

Feeling that there was no time like the present,

Crawford opted to have the surgery immediately—

though it would put him in the hospital over

Christmas. The procedure was a success, removing

the tumor—along with half the patient’s stomach. In

order for the surgery to heal, a tube was placed down

Crawford’s throat to evacuate his stomach’s fluids.

When Crawford was allowed to have solid food for

the first time since the surgery and was asked what

he would like, he answered without hesitation that he

wanted a roast beef dinner. As was the case with his

tomato soup 45 years earlier, the seemingly mundane

meal, sweetened by survival, tasted “like heaven.”

Crawford then underwent six months of

chemotherapy to ensure the cancer would not spread.

Thinking he would have to go to a major cancer center

to receive his treatments, Crawford decided to stay at

Mercy Iowa City after being informed by Dr. Llewellyn

that his local hospital could provide exactly the same

therapy as he would receive anywhere else.

Now 79 years old and cancer-free, Crawford credits

Mercy Iowa City with giving him an extra 15 years and

counting. That, in addition to his appreciation of then

Foundation President Emilie Rubright’s daily visits

during his convalescence, spurred Crawford’s new

vocation as a constant and munificent donor to the

Mercy Foundation.

To him, his gifts enable the hospital to better serve

its patients, which is all the gratification he requires.

Though they may not know him personally, to those

whose lives are made better through his generous

donations, John Crawford is a lifesaver—a strong and

steady hand, reaching down from the railing above,

pulling them up out of the water to safety.

Longtime Foundation Donor John Crawford is a True Survivor

Crawford’s first post-rescue meal of

reconstituted tomato soup tasted,

according to him, “like heaven.”

Thanks to donations channeled through the

Foundation, Mercy Hospital’s Cardiovascular

Department has acquired several leading-edge

technologies to enhance its diagnostic and

surgical abilities.

Last year, Mercy cardiologists began using a new

and sophisticated digital holter monitor. The device,

which is about the size of a pack

of playing cards, is worn by a

patient for up to 48 hours while

he or she simultaneously keeps

a log of the day’s activities.

When plugged into its charging

cradle, the monitor automatically

dials Mercy Hospital and

transmits its data to the system’s

primary computer, which can

then analyze and display the

information.

Prior to the acquisition of this

new technology, patients would

use older, analog-type recording

equipment that was less

reliable and required physically

transporting the tape back to the

hospital. As with the older

equipment, the holter monitor

allows cardiologists to look for

arrhythmias in patients with suspicious symptoms.

This new digital system has been adopted by several

prestigious academic medical centers, including the

Mayo and Cleveland Clinics. Mercy’s Cardiovascular

Department now has 16 such devices and is considering

sending several to various regional clinics.

Another donation-facilitated acquisition is the

SaphLITE saphenous vein retractor system, which

allows Mercy cardiothoracic surgeons to harvest veins

from patients’ legs for use in cardiac bypass surgery.

Before the introduction of the system, surgery would

typically leave a large scar on the leg from the groin to

the ankle. With the SaphLITE system, the procedure

can be completed with minimal

scarring, which often results in

less pain for the patient and a

faster recovery time.

Someone who has an

intimate understanding of

the Foundation’s largesse is

Dr. James R. Hopson, Mercy’s

Director of Arrhythmia Services.

An avid bicyclist and President

of the Mercy Specialized

Racing Team, Dr. Hopson is

an everyday example of the

benefits of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Practicing what he

preaches, he bikes to and from work every day, where

he specializes in cardiac electrophysiology—the

diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the electrical

system of the heart. Much of the equipment used by

the department is extremely costly and wouldn’t be

available to Dr. Hopson and his patients if not for the

Foundation and its donors.

One recent example is equipment used for an

electrophysiological procedure for treating atrial

fibrillation—a disorder in which the heart's two

upper chambers (the atria) quiver instead of beating

effectively. Because blood isn't completely pumped

out, it can pool and clot, sometimes resulting in

a stroke. Traditionally treated with antiarrhythmic

drugs, atrial fibrillation can now be treated by an

electrophysiological procedure called circumferential

atrial fibrillation ablation. The procedure, which was

brought to Mercy by Dr. Hopson, means fewer

patients may have to take antiarrhythmic medicine,

and preliminary findings indicate it may actually be

more effective than traditional drug therapy.

Due to the tireless work of the Mercy Hospital

Foundation and the generosity of its donors, new

medical technologies such as these are acquired

and implemented by Mercy Hospital on a regular

basis, making a demonstrable difference in the quality

Practicing what he preaches,

Dr. Hopson bikes to and from

work every day.

Left to right: Dr. Daniel K. Reasoner and Dr. James R.

Dr. Merry Jayne Haworth, Medical Director of Mercy’s

Emergency Care Unit, has long desired to bring the

palliative powers of music to Mercy Hospital. Dr.

Haworth, who received her undergraduate degree in

music and still plays the

flute, wanted to add

music to Mercy’s existing

art program for the

benefit of patients and

staff alike. Since 2002,

students from Iowa City’s

Preucil School of Music

have performed at the

hospital on several

occasions, but Dr. Haworth felt that in order to attract

other performers, the hospital needed a “fine”

piano—specifically, a Steinway.

A campaign was developed—Line Meets Curve,

Classical Meets Jazz—with the goal of raising enough

money to buy a Steinway Model L 5’ 10” grand piano.

With a lead gift from the Mercy Hospital Guild, a

generous discount from West Music, and an event

on June 12 to finish raising the funds (at which

Dr. Haworth performed), the goal was met and the

piano installed. Community members and Mercy

staff, from physicians to housekeepers, reached

deep and responded

overwhelmingly to the

campaign’s request for

support.

The impressive,

black lacquered Steinway

now sits in the hospital’s

glass atrium, which

exhibits excellent acoustic

properties and provides

adequate seating for a

variety of musical recitals.

The piano was just

the beginning of Mercy’s

foray into music. An

audiovisual system is

in the process of being

installed that will allow patients to watch and listen

to musical events in the comfort of their own rooms.

Emboldened by her initial success, Dr. Haworth

envisions the program continuing through

partnerships with Preucil and Hancher artists to

bring in world-class talent to expand the

program’s offerings.

The Legacy Award is a new tribute that recognizes

a Mercy nurse for continuing the professionalism and

compassion traditions of the founding Sisters of Mercy.

The recipient is recognized with a special tribute and a

cash gift.

2004 Recipient: Laurie Wood R.N., 4 Center

The Mercy Foundation

continued its support of the

Health Career Scholarships,

which are designed to

bring new talent to health

care—especially in fields

experiencing shortages. As

many as ten students per

year are selected to receive

$1,000 per year for up to

four years. While there

is no requirement that recipients work there upon

graduation, the hospital encourages these talented,

motivated students to consider Mercy as a possible

future employer.

One of this year’s recipients was Kelsey Deeds, who

is currently in her second year of nursing school at

Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. Kelsey, a

graduate of City High in Iowa City, has wanted to work

in health care ever since she can remember, thanks to

an aunt who was a nurse. Kelsey’s ambitions lie in the

area of pediatric nursing, and she is very appreciative

of the scholarship because it helps her move forward

towards her ultimate goal of practicing pediatric

nursing care.
