YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE

FROM

THE

EDITOR

Ilove school holidays. I don’thave to worry about gettingthings organised for school

lunches and I can start work onmy time, rather than the schoolclock.

I also get to see more of thekids, of course.

I’m lucky that my lot are oldenough now to look afterthemselves, so holidays are allabout sleeping in, catching up onhomework and creative projects, and hanging out with friends. I’llget home to baking, stories andclean rooms. Well, that’s my hope, anyway.

Holidays also mean fewer carson the road in the morning, sothat dreaded commute should bearound half an hour quicker.

It also means more childrenabout when you least expectthem, so keep your eyes peeledwhen you’re out and about.

And enjoy the extra time, andthe extra cuddles. They don’t lastnearly long enough.

Hall no longer earthquake-proneMONIQUE STEELE

Springston Hall Committee members Jenny Turner, Bruce Woods, Nita Phillips, chairman Neville Benny, Elizabeth Thomas,

councillor Debra Hasson, James Woods, Christine Bezar and Bill Woods celebrate the reopening of the community hall.

PHOTO: MONIQUE STEELE/FAIRFAX NZ

The Springston Hall Committeehas celebrated the reopening ofthe community hall over a glass ofbubbly.

Selwyn District Council (SDC)property and commercial man-ager Douglas Marshall announcedthe hall was able to be reopenedlast month, following a councilreassessment for earthquakeproneness.

The Springston Hall Com-mittee had pushed for thereassessment since the main areawas closed in September 2014 as itfailed to reach the minimum NewBuilding Standard (NBS) rating of34 per cent.

Marshall said the reviewreflected Ministry of Educationupdates to the measurement ofwhether wooden buildings wereearthquake-prone.

‘‘Using this guidance, therevised assessment for Springstonhas concluded that the main hallis no longer deemed to be earth-quake prone,’’ Marshall said.

‘‘The hall reopening is verypleasing for the Springston com-munity and I would like toacknowledge the chairmanship ofNeville Benny and his committee, particularly in working throughthis challenging process withcouncil,’’ Marshall said.

Image Construction managing

director and local Springston resi-dent James Woods has been inconstruction for 23 years and saidthe hall should never have beenclosed.

His concern was that the pub-lic may now have unnecessaryconcerns about the hall’s safety.

‘‘From the committee perspec-tive, it’s important to reassure thepublic that the reassessment hascome in greater than 40% NBS...It’s a good thing for the com-munity,’’ he said.

Woods said post-earthquake,old wooden structures such asthis hall were the most resilientstructures of all.

‘‘Douglas [Marshall] said theywouldn’t open it if they didn’tthink it was safe.’’

He said local engineers conduc-ted their own reassessmentswhich mirrored the figures of thecouncil reassessment.

Bill Woods worked with theCommittee, contacting govern-ment engineers, the SDC and local

engineers and builders.‘‘It was [the community’s]

pride and bloody joy and todestroy it would be a kick in theguts,’’ Bill said.

‘‘It’s a very safe hall... I’mreally really pleased it is openagain.’’

Committee member ElizabethThomas said ‘‘...it’s good that it’sopened... it’s been 18 months’’.

The report advised that theCommittee consider strengthen-ing and upgrades for the future.

Lawn watering restrictions for properties connected to Council water

supplies across Selwyn have been lifted from Wednesday 20 April.

Residents can now water their lawns at any time – but should considerwatering after 9pm and before 6am. This is when demand is lowestand conditions are best for water to soak into the ground, reducing theamount of water needed.

Groundwater levels remain very low. If these conditions continue, water restrictions

are likely to be re-imposed in the spring.

The Council thanks residents for their assistance in reducing water demand during

the summer.

Taking knife to spending can be satisfyingROB STOCKopinion

Easing up on a book addiction can

help trim personal expenditure

without damaging your happiness.

I’ve done it three times in the pasttwo years, and each time it hasyielded really good results.

In each case, I chose an item ofpersonal expenditure I decided Icould get rid of without damagingmy happiness.

The first was forbidding myselfto ever, ever buy lunch.

I’ve got so used to not spendingon convenience food it’s becomesecond nature. It’s now physicallypainful to pull my wallet out tobuy lunch.

The second was ditching myhabit of consuming a couple ofbottles of diet Coke a week.

The third, and the mostglorious, was selling my car whenmy younger daughter startedschool.

I’m lucky to live near my workand my daughters’ school.

Sure, I miss the sushi, but notthat much, and I’m fitter,

healthier and wealthier.I’m embarking on another cut

this year, albeit a temporary one.I have a book addiction.Reading is a vice of mine, and

books seem to stack up in myhouse faster than empty bottles ina booze hound’s recycling bin.

The result is there are books onshelves, books in boxes, books incupboards, and books in cartonsin the garage.

Many are pre-loved bookspicked up when passingsecondhand bookstores.

Like a squirrel gathering nutsfor future consumption, I find ithard to walk past a book I will oneday want to read, even though Ireckon I’ve already got years ofvirgin reading material in myhome.

As addictions go, it’s notparticularly harmful, but I’vedecided not to buy another bookfor myself this year.

I’m going to read through thebook mountain I already own, buthave never cracked the spine of.

So far this year I have survivedon books that came my way atChristmas (including theexcellent Speeches that ShapedNew Zealand 1814-1956) and booksoff the shelves. I’ve been choosingthe fattest ones as a means ofslowing myself down. I’mcurrently engaged in trying tokeep up momentum in GeorgeElliot’s Middlemarch. Onlyanother 450 pages to go.

Actively taking the knife tospending makes sense from time

to time. Spending can buildaccidentally. If work isparticularly full-on, you can slipinto buying lunches. If you aresleeping badly, soft drinks can bea crutch to help get you through.

Habit is both the friend and theenemy of the wealth. Good habitsbreed wealth. Bad habits leech itaway.

Often, a jolt is required to getus to change bad habits, such as asudden drop in income, or a bigbill such as a shortfall in a healthinsurance surgical claim.

How much better not to waitfor the jolt, but to be proactive, and try to spend only onnecessities, and luxuries thatreally do add to happiness.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Healthy dining out as the weather begins to draw inWintermeansmenu changes, and there are plenty of healthyoptions out there.

This latest cold snap is a reminderthat winter is on its wicked way.You may notice many restaurantswill start adjusting their menusaccordingly. Some include ‘slow cook’ items,

and some take out light salad-typeofferings and substitute heavierdishes. While something hot is a pleasant

choice on a chilly (no pun intended)night out, the portions we’re servedwhen eating out at restaurants andtake-out establishments can foilany healthy diet or weight loss. The good news is that eating out

healthfully has never been easier. You’ll find that nearly allrestaurants offer healthy choicesfor discriminating diners. When eating out, you can almost

always find a nutritious salad, grilled chicken sandwich, or cup ofsoup that will satisfy your hungerwithout excess calories. At restaurants it is quite in order

for you to ask for the food to beprepared the way you like it, and bepicky when scanning the menu.Experts offer the following tips to

help you make the most nutritiousand healthy choices when you’re

eating out:❚ Have sauces served on the siderather than poured directly overthe dish❚ Opt for light salad dressings orvinaigrettes, served on the side.

❚ Go for foods that are baked, broiled, roasted, grilled – anypreparation other than fried is thebest choice.❚ Select broth-based soups.❚ Have tomato or vegetable

toppings on pasta.❚ Take it easy with the cheese.❚ Limit your intake of selectionsfrom the basket while you wait foryour meal.❚ Look for fresh fruit or fruit sorbet

for dessert.❚ Go for vegetables rather thanfries and salad.❚ Choose simply prepared foodswithout lots of extra ingredientsand calories.❚ Enjoy as many simply preparedvegetables as you like.❚ Keep portions small.❚ Avoid mindless hand-to-moutheating.❚ Enjoy a salad and an appetiser inplace of an entree.❚ If you don’t feel like eating thewhole course and don’t want towaste it, ask for a doggy bag.In the final analysis, a meal out at

a nice restaurant during themonths approaching winter is anenlivening and a special experience, and you would be right to say, ‘‘Ishall jolly well eat what I like,’’ butyou should be able to enjoyyourself without any regrets. Bonappetite!

All aboard for fun

George Henare stars as Sir Joseph in

HMS Pinafore.

Ahoy! Ship ahoy!. HMS Pinaforesteams into the Ashburton TrustEvent Centre on Tuesday April 26.

Gilbert & Sullivan’s comedicmusical Savoy operas poked theborax at just about everything. From lampooning the class systemand bumbling bureaucracy tostuffed shirt patriotism andindividual foibles, their 19th centurymasterpieces are still tilting at andhitting themark.

Modernmusical theatre owesmuch to the duo, who in real lifecould hardly stand one another, buttogethermanaged tomake stagemagic full of wit, silliness andwhimsicality.

Starring George Henare as SirJoseph, TizaneMcEvoy asJosephinewith Tainui Kuru asRalph, HelenMedlyn as Buttercupand Paul Barrett as the captain,HMS Pinafore is directed byGeraldine Brophy. Featuring the stillwell-known numbers LittleButtercup and He is an Englishman,

HMS Pinafore was one of the firstGilbert & Sullivan shows to tourNew Zealand courtesy of theRiccardi Opera Company in 1879,only a year after its Londonpremiere.

Forbidden and star-crossed love, matters of class and identity drivethis enduringly popular operetta, also known by its sub-title The Lassthat Loved A Sailor.

Aboard the good ship HMSPinafore (the ship being namedafter an apron is all part of theextended joke), the captain’sdaughter, Josephine, has fallen inlovewith Ralph Rackstraw, a lower-class sailor. Ah, but her father,Captain Corcoran desires her tomarry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lordof the Admiralty, no less.

Josephine is prepared to put herfeelings aside and abide by herfather’s wishes at first. But when SirJoseph starts professing equalityfor all (except, of course, no one isequal to him), his words encourage

Josephine and Ralph to flout theconventional notions of socialorder.

Declaring their love, the pairmake plans to elope. However, thesour able-seaman Dick Deadeyedobs them in, and it’s the ignominyof the brig for for Ralph. Thencomes the inevitable surprisedisclosure which causes a completeturnabout in fortune.

All hands on deck as HMSPinaforemakes Ashburton a portcity just for one night. Bookingsthrough TicketDirect.

New equestrian park opens soonA new horse riding park will open on 30 April in Selwyn. The new park, called West Melton Forest, is part of Environment Canterbury’s Waimakariri River Regional Park, which also includes Baynons Brake, a smaller horse-riding trail on the opposite side of the river, near Kainga.

Originally planted as a lood protection measure, the 350-hectare pine forest continues to protect the Waimakariri’s stopbanks from loods, and has been developed with equestrians in mind. The development was undertaken to meet the increasing demand for safe horse-riding facilities in Selwyn district.

“Lots of people have been asking for places to ride off-road in the Selwyn district,” says Environment Canterbury Parks and Forests Team Leader David Owen.

“Equestrians will appreciate the new 10 kilometres of marked trail. Horse-and-carts are permitted in the forest as well, with large sandy areas and forest roads to explore.”

This project has been supported by the community through volunteer planting days, a picnic bench donated by Canterbury pony clubs and many other donations of both time and resources. Environment Canterbury is developing the park in association with Selwyn District Council, which has contributed inancially, and Fulton Hogan, which has also generously contributed to the development of the park.

All local horse riders and carriage drivers are welcome to attend the grand opening of this new park on Saturday 30 April at 10.30am. A barbecue lunch will follow later in the afternoon. For more information and to register for the event, go to www.ecan.govt.nz/westmeltonforest

Water restrictions liftedLawn watering restrictions for properties connected to Council water supplies will be lifted from Wednesday 20 April.

“The restrictions have been lifted as cooler weather and shorter daylight hours has helped reduce the demand for water,” says Asset Manager Water Services Murray England.

While you will soon be able to water your lawn at any time of theday, the Council still encourages people to consider watering after9pm and before 6am as this is the time of lowest demand for water and provides the best opportunity for water to soak into the ground, reducing the amount of water needed for irrigation.

Groundwater levels remain very low and in many locations continue to decline. If groundwater recharge does not occur this autumn and winter then early water restrictions are likely this coming spring.

Council would like to thank residents for their assistance in reducing water demand over the summer.

Water rates changes proposedAs part of its Annual Plan for 2016/17, the Council is currently consulting on a change to water rates for households on rural water supplies.

Last year the Council introduced a district-wide rate for urban water and wastewater, and indicated itwould consult on extending the district-wide rate to rural water supplies. These include the HororataAcheron scheme, supplying Hororata and the surrounding area, the Malvern Hills scheme, supplyingCoalgate, Glentunnel, Whitecliffs, Dalethorpe and surrounding areas, and the Te Pirita scheme (metered).

It’s proposed that properties connected to the Hororata Acheron and Malvern Hills supplies moveto a more standardised water charge, where properties using one unit (1,000 litres) of water per daywould pay the same charge as the district-wide water rate. Properties connected to these ruralschemes purchase water in units and can pay for more units if they wish to. The change to rating forrural water schemes would also result in a small increase in the district-wide water rates and chargesfor other properties connected to Council water supplies.

More information on this change is included in our Annual Plan Consultation Document, availablefrom Council service centres or online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay. The document alsooutlines other proposals currently under consultation. Submissions on the Annual Plan close at 5pmon Wednesday 4 May.

Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY

I think I’m lacking in protein, Ieat a relatively balanced dietand include meat but I read it’sdifficult to get enough protein. What are your thoughts on this? With thanks – Susie.

Hi Susie. Protein is anessential macronutrient. Itsupplies us energy, helps ourbodies recover and is a criticalpart of our immune system.Proteins are composed of aminoacids, which are the buildingblocks of muscle and other bodyproteins.

In the Western world it’s prettydifficult to become proteindeficient if you eat a varied dietconsisting of whole foods.

The reasons you may not begetting enough protein are fairlystraightforward such as, notconsuming enough food ingeneral (low energy/calorierestrictive diet), you’re followinga restricted diet such as avegetarian or vegan diet, or if youhave some digestive systemsproblems. If it is the latter, you

may not absorb the amino acidsfrom your proteins foodseffectively. If you don’t eatenough food, your body may nothave enough amino acids forbuilding muscles, immunity, andhealthy hair, skin and nails etc.

Science currently suggeststhat the average person needs toconsume somewhere between 0.5and 1 gram of protein perkilogram of body weight. Onaverage, this suggests that for aperson who weighs 70kg, thatwould be about 55 grams ofprotein per day.

But consuming ‘‘adequate’’amounts of protein depends on anumber of factors including: yourphysical activity, age, currentmuscle mass or current state ofhealth (particular medicalconditions can require higher orlower consumptions of protein).Furthermore, nothing in natureis 100 per cent protein. Manypeople have been misinformedabout how much protein theyactually need for optimal health.

I’m a health coach and I wantedto know what your top threehealth tips would be for anyonewanting to lead a healthierlifestyle? Thanks, Chrystal.

Hi Chrystal. It’s difficult tochoose just three – but Ithink these tips are great foranyone wanting to improvetheir health and wellbeing,regardless of their current healthstatus;

1. Instead of focusing on eating

less of something that isn’t goodfor you, focus on eating morewhole real food.

2. Become breath aware. A lotof people live on adrenalin and it

can cause a host of problems.Diaphragmatic breathing lowersstress hormones more effectivelythan anything.

3. Stay in touch with what agift life is. When we feel gratefulwe can’t be stressed.

Zootopia a joyous celebration of diversityZootopia (PG)

Directors:ByronHoward, RIch

Moore and Jared Bush

Starring:Ginnifer Goodwin, JasonBateman, Idris Elba

★★★★

108 mins

Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) is looking to make a difference as the first bunny police officer in the excellent andthoroughly entertaining Zootopia.

As weighty as thesubject matter is, itnever drags the filmdown from being agloriously fun time.

LIAM MAGUREN

Disney has lit a stick ofrainbow dynamite, and itthreatens to blow away

Shane Black’s The Nice Guys forBest Buddy-Cop Film of 2016.

Set in a world of talkinganimals, Zootopia not only usesthis conceit (done to death inanimation) to tell a deceptivelyclever crime tale, but also tohighlight the importance ofdiversity and the danger ofdiscrimination.

Those themes seem prettyheavy for a kids film, but thepremise is simple enough: JudyHopps (Ginnifer Goodwin, TV’sOnce Upon a Time) is looking tomake a difference as the firstbunny police officer. When she’sgiven a shot at solving a missingperson’s case, it forces her topartner with hustling fox NickWilde (Jason Bateman).

Disney could have easilyvacuumed up stacks of cash hadthe film just been about thiscomedic odd couple solving thecase, hi-fiving each other, andwrapping it up with a sing-a-longmusical number. But Zootopiaisn’t looking to simply be ‘‘cute’’ –which, hilariously, is consideredan offensive label in its world. When Hopps’ investigationthreatens to label and segregate‘‘predators’’ and ‘‘prey’’, that’swhen the film shines a harshlight on some truths about the

modern world. But as weighty as the subject

matter is, it never drags the filmdown from being a gloriously funtime. From the metropolis thatcaters to different animalenvironments, to the sight of anelephant doing naturist yoga, theanimators and visual artistsknock every frame out of thepark.

And while the film invites us tochuckle at the unique quirks of allits species (the sloths taking thecomedy cake), it’s never mean-spirited. That’s because Zootopiaslices through complex socialissues with a simple message: ourdifferences can be joyous.

Professional rugby grows into adulthoodThere’s not thesame buzz for SuperRugby as there wasin those days ofFitzy, Zinny, Jonahand Tana.

Zinzan Brooke leads the Auckland Blues on to the Palmerston North

Showgrounds on March 1, 1996, to kick off the professional rugby era.

Sports talk

Super Rugby has come of age,and my, how it’s grown. It doesn’t seem 21 seasons

ago since rugby entered a bold, professional era with theintroduction of the Super 12.

That competition evolved fromthe amateur South PacificChampionship, and the Super 6and Super 10 competitions.

But it was different – it wasprofessional. Players wereguaranteed at least $65,000 a year.A referee like Paddy O’Briencould earn $45,000.

The players loved it. AsAuckland Blues (the teams hadgeographic tags back then)captain Zinzan Brooke said afterthe opening match: ‘‘At least it’s apayday now.’’

In the early years there wasgreat crowd support andtelevision audiences were strong.

The first professional matchwas Wellington Hurricanes vAuckland Blues at the PalmerstonNorth Showgrounds, which begsthe question: why not play youropening match in a major

stadium in a main city? The Blues fielded a team of All

Blacks, Zinzan and Robin Brooke,Sean Fitzpatrick, Jonah Lomu,Michael Jones and Olo Brownamong them. The Hurricaneswere led by Norm Hewitt and hadfirepower too, including ChristianCullen, Alama Ieremia, TanaUmaga and Bull Allen.

Ieremia scored the first try, butthe Blues won 36-28, havingtrailed until the 75th minute.

The power-packed Blues werefavourites to win the Super title, and duly delivered. TheHurricanes were at odds of 66:1.The bookies know their stuff – theHurricanes still haven’t won thecompetition.

About 13,000 people turned upin Palmerston North and theyloved the fast, open rugby.

Amazingly, the Crusaders, who have become the great teamof Super Rugby, with seven titles, finished last in 1996.

New Zealand teams havedominated. Besides theCrusaders, the Blues have wonthree times, the Chiefs twice andthe Highlanders once.

South African sides have wononly three of the 20 titles, all bythe Bulls. For Australia, theBrumbies twice, Waratahs andReds have had victorious seasons.

New Zealand’s dominationextends to individual record-holders. Most games – KevenMealamu, 175. Most consecutive

games – Caleb Ralph, 104. Mostpoints – Daniel Carter, 1708. Mosttries – Doug Howlett, 59. Mostpenalties – Andrew Mehrtens, 202.Most conversions – Carter, 185.

The Super 12 expanded to

Super 14 in 2006 and Super 15 in2011. Now there are 18 teams. Fivecountries, including Argentinaand Japan, are involved. Thetelevision audience extends tomore than 50 countries.

That first match in PalmerstonNorth took place on March 1 , butthe competition began evenearlier after that until in 2007 itkicked off on February 2: peaksummer. It used to finish in May,but now it extends until August.

Some say rugby officials arekilling the goose that lays thegolden egg, that rugby hasreached saturation point.

Certainly there’s not the samebuzz for Super Rugby as there wasin those days of Fitzy, Zinny,Jonah and Tana.

But at the business end of thecompetition, the fervour isundeniably there – think back tothe intense interest last year inthat cracking Highlanders-Hurricanes final.

The rugby administrators whodesigned the Super 12 in 1996would surely be proud to see howtheir baby has grown into a fulladult.

earlier this month. PHOTO: MONIQUE STEELE

A team of five young Lincolngolfers has won a Canterbury-wide junior golf competition.

The Lincoln Golf Club cameinto the competition as the under-dog, having not entered in thecompetition before, and came outon top.

The five Lincoln High Schoolstudents were reasonably new tothe club, but were already show-ing their potential, winning theinterclub finals of the Canterburyjunior championships at theTempleton Golf Club on April 2.

Lincoln players RobsonHarker, 15, Jack Knewstubb, 15,Taylor Holland, 13, Mitchell Hol-land, 15, and Camron Harker, 13,said they loved the competitive-ness of golf.

Lincoln played against Horo-rata, Russley Blue, Weedons and

won the semi-final against Russ-ley Gold 3-1 and then won the finalagainst Russley Blue atTempleton 3-1.

Lincoln junior coach MikeBond said the boys were a greatteam, considering they had allbeen with the club for one year orless.

‘‘I’m proud of the way they con-ducted themselves, their sports-manship and how they played,’’Bond said.

‘‘You can support yourfriends,’’ Camron Harker said.

Most of the boys wanted to con-tinue to play golf competitively, saying some of their favouritegolfers included Jason Day,Rickie Fowler, and a name syn-onymous with professional golf.

‘‘If it works out ... I’ll be thenew Tiger Woods,’’ Knewstubbsaid.

The trophy for the most

individual wins during the roundrobin competition was wonjointly by Knewstubb and Wai-mairi Beach’s Grace Petelo.

‘‘He [Knewstubb] only lost onematch,’’ Bond said.

‘‘I had a feeling they would allwin.

Trudy Harker, mother ofRobson and Camron, paid tributeto the coach.

‘‘I don’t think without hisencouragement that they’d do it,’’she said.

Bond said there were around60 juniors at the Lincoln club, aged from 5 to 18 – boys and girls.

He said membership forjuniors was $40 for the year.

‘‘We’ve got about 60 juniors onour books, but only about 13 withhandicaps.’’

The next competition will bethe Canterbury junior foursomesbeginning in August.
