Indraprastha College for Women is the oldest women’s college of the University of Delhi and was founded in 1924 as a part of the nation-wide campaign for women’s education and empowerment. Today this prestigious College has an enrolment of over 2670 students and offers a wide range of courses and activities. The College ranks in the top ten Arts colleges of the city and the top twenty in the country.

Under the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), the College offers Discipline I courses in Computer Science, Commerce, Economics, English, Hindi, History, Journalism and Mass Communication, Music, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science and Psychology. It boasts of an excellent faculty and a very helpful support staff. The College results are consistantly good and many of its students secure top positions in the University every year.

The College follows a strict attendance policy within the frame work of the rules of the University of Delhi. The “ discretion “ of the Principal of the College, in cases of shortage of attendance cannot be invoked as a matter of right. The College believes in the classroom interaction and experience, and insists that the attendance requirement of at least 2/3 of the classes is necessary for students to derive value from a 14 week semester programme.

In its drive to constantly upgrade material and human resources to meet the demands of a modern system of education and realize its own vision, the College has regularly added new facilities to provide a comfortable working environment for its faculty and students. Full power back-up has been provided in the College to ensure that all activities are carried out without interruption. In an ongoing endeavor to create a disabled-friendly environment, the College is completely barrier – free. Special toilets, a lift in the library, ramps and markers for the visually-challenged, are provided for the differently-abled. Customized software and reading materials in Braille for the visually-challenged are available in the Library.

The College has an auditorium, a state-of-the-art conference and seminar rooms and an Audio-Visual Resource Centre. There is a fully equipped studio, radio production centre, editing bays, dark rooms and equipment required for in-house training and production related to the Journalism and Mass Communication course. The College has a spacious Library with many rare books and the latest in national and international journals. The iCT Centre with 80 computers is also located in the Library.

A sprawling multi - facility sports complex offering an entire range of sports activities, a swimming pool, outdoor and indoor shooting ranges, vast playgrounds, synthetic tennis and basketball courts form part of the excellent sports infrastructure offered by the College. Sports like Archery, Aerobics, Baseball, Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, Swimming, Martial Arts, Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Squash, Table Tennis, Chess, Rifle Shooting are some of the sports in which students excel. There is also a fitness training centre with the latest equipment.

The College offers various extra-curricular activities and excels in Dramatics, Dance, Debate, Choreography, Music and Fine arts. The College also runs an NCC unit and the NSS program. The golden Key international Honour Society, the International Award for Young People are opportunities for all students who want to push their limits of achievements. The North East Society and the Foreign Students Society are actively involved in the acculturation of students from different parts of the country and the world. The College has a 26 seater bus to facilitate student transport related to all activities in the College. The College also provides basic medical facilities to deal with minor emergencies in its medical room. There is a visiting doctor and nurse. Student counseling services are provided by a professional throughout the year. A Career guidance and Placement Cell regularly facilitates recruitment and exposure of students to education and employment opportunities.

I – AdmIssIon Procedure:

a) Candidates are required to fill centralised pre admission form prior to the announcement of cut-off lists. (For details about the availability of these forms, check the University Website)

b) Candidates are required to check the cut-offs and additional eligibility criteria to the desired course from the College Notice Board and College website.

c) All admissions will be based on the norms laid down by the respective departments and will depend on the number of seats available.

d) All notifications regarding admissions will be displayed on the College Notice Board. No individual intimation relating to admissions will be communicated.

e) Candidates who qualify for admission according to the criteria fixed for a given course should report to the Teacher-in-Charge of the concerned department in the allotted room on any of the designated dates between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m.

Note: • It is necessary for candidates to be physically present at the time

of admission.• Only the candidate shall be allowed to enter the admission room.

• It is strictly advised that any person(s) accompanying the candidate wait in the designated waiting area (Auditorium) till the candidate finishes the admission process.

Procedure for admissions under sports quota

1) Applicants under this category must submit a separate sports application form, available at the College Office.

2) Photocopies of certificates along with photographs duly verified by the Head of Institution last attended must be attached with the applicaiton.

3) The candidates will be required to appear for the sports trials to be conducted by the College as per dates notified.

4) The applicants should carry the acknowledgement slip of the College application form at the time of sports trials.

5) They will also be required to bring the original sports certificates on the day of the trials.

VII– HosTeL AdmIssIon

A percentage of hostel seats, available in the two hostels, is reserved for first year outstation students in the. Hostel admission procedures require students to fill and submit a separate application form. Students should report in person to the Warden(s) and register their names with her as soon as the formalities for College admission have been completed. Registration will continue till the last day of the Second Admission list.Please note that admission to the College does not guarantee accommodation in the hostel as seats for students in the first year are limited. Hostel seats are alloted purely on the basis of availability and performance in the school leaving examination. The hostel Merit list for Admission will be displayed the day after the completion of Second list admissions in the College. Admission to the hostel will take place thereafter.Further applications will be received for hostel seats and may be entertained subject to availability. ORIENTATION PROGRAMMEAll first-year students are expected to attend the Orientation Programme to be held in the College on 23th July 2013 at 10 a.m.

All sessions will be followed by their Departmental Orientation in which students will be familiarised with the academic requirements of their course of study.

ABOUT ThE COURSE

More than a decade ago Indraprastha College for Women, with its finger on the pulse of the times, had introduced the Bachelor in Mass Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC). The course met with stupendous response and attracted aspirants who went on to become media professionals, thinkers and practitioners in their chosen field. The College today ranks among the top five media schools in the country.

This year, under the direction of the University of Delhi, the BMMMC course of Indraprastha College merged with the B.A Hons Journalism course. The merging of the courses has created a more enriched, dynamic and expansive field of study and practice with many exciting possibilities for students. The course has been renamed Bachelor in Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC).

The BJMC Course is based on academically sound contours and profiling, which makes it a globally viable course, aimed at producing excellence. Mindful also of its location within the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and Humanities (FAASH), it not only seeks to be based on the basic principles of Social Sciences and the Humanities and their interdisciplinary nature, but is also a Course which imparts technical knowledge and hands-on skills. it is aimed not merely at producing skilled workers for the media industry, (which any short-term diploma course can provide), but developing a core competence and comprehension, in the crucially important areas of mass communication across mass media, in their complexity, political dynamics and technological advances. It is aimed at students who may want to work as journalists or in

other capacities in media houses, enter policy research, development studies, freelance or indeed, pursue higher studies to become teachers in the field. The syllabus is evenly balanced in imparting technical skills in various areas of mass communication and mass media, theoretical knowledge and perspectives which determine their nature and use, and a historical and social understanding of their dynamics, which is so important in a metamorphosing, unequal, globalised world where the power and ownership of the means of communication may change the fate of nations.

INFRASTRUCTUREThe existing and ready infrastructure of indraprastha College has positioned it uniquely to offer every facility required for students to pursue this course in College. The College will continue to encourage and facilitate internship with various organizations even though the syllabus no longer has a compulsory internship component. The Career guidance and Placement Cell of the College will continue to enable recruitment of students to viable job opportunities.The huge infrastructure built over 14 years in I.P College for the course includes a fully air conditioned studio and audio visual production centre, 3 radio production rooms. The studio is equipped with 15 camera setups, production control room, radio studio, NLE with 15 editing bays, equipped with MAC machines with the latest software. Dark rooms, the latest in computer hardware and software and classrooms equipped with projection facilities. The department has also made cameras, video units and other equipment available on an individual basis to each and every student, for hands-on experience of the course and to enable them to fulfill the requirements of the curriculum. The students are involved in various activites through out the year.

Attendance Requirement

The student is required to attend two-thirds of the lectures, practicals, tutorials and presentations in all the subjects taken together.

medical certificate:1. The Principal of the college may consider, on the basis of the Medical

Certificates produced, exceptionally hard cases of students who had fallen seriously ill or had met with an accident, disabling them from attending classes for a certain period, with a view to determining whether the lectures etc. delivered during the said period or a part thereof, could be excluded for purposes of calculation of attendance and it will be decide on its own merits.

2. Medical certificates should be submitted within 3 days of joining back with a covering application addressed to the Principal with supporting documents (lab reports, X-ray etc) at the college dispatch window.

3. A copy of documents submitted to the office has to be given to the teacher incharge for record.

Maintenance of discipline among students of the University1. All powers relating to discipline and disciplinary action are vested in the

Vice-Chancellor2. The Vice-Chancellor may delegate all or such powers as he/she deems

proper to the Proctor and to such other persons as he/she may specify in this behalf

3. Without prejudice to the generality of power to enforce discipline under the Ordinance the following shall amount to acts of gross indiscipline:a. Physical assault, or threat to use physical force, against any member of

the teaching and non-teaching staff of any Institution and Department and against any student within the University of Delhi

b. Carrying of, use of or threat to use of any weaponsc. Any violationof theprovisionsof theCivilRights ProtectionAct,

1976d. Violationofthestatus,dignityandhonourofstudentsbelongingto

the scheduled castes and tribese. Any practice-whether verbal or otherwise derogatory of women

Without prejudice to the generality of his/her powers relating to the maintenance of discipline and taking such action in the interest of maintaining discipline as may seem to him/her appropriate, the Vice-Chancellor, may in the exercise of his/her powers aforesaid order or direct that any student or students –a. be expelledb. be, for a stated period rusticatedc. be not for a stated period, admitted to a course or courses of study

in a College, Department or Institution of the Universityd. be fined with a sum of rupees that may be specifiede. be debarred from taking a University or College or Departmental

Examination or Examinations for one or more yearsf. the result of the student or students concerned in the Examination

or Examinations in which he/she or they have appeared be cancelled5. The Principals of the Colleges, Heads of the Halls, Dean of Faculties,

Heads of Teaching Departments in the University, the Principal, School of Open Learning and Librarians shall have the authority to exercise all such disciplinary powers over students in their respective Colleges, Institutions, Faculties and Teaching Departments in the University as may be necessary for the proper conduct of the Institutions, Halls and teaching in the concerned Departments. They may exercise their authority through, or delegate authority to such of the teachers in their colleges, institutions or Departments as they may specify for these purposes.

6. Without prejudice to the powers of the Vice-chancellor and the Procter as aforesaid detailed rules of discipline and proper conduct shall be framed. These rules may be supplemented, where necessary, by the Principals of Colleges, Heads of Halls, Deans of Faculties and Heads of Teaching Departments in this University. Each student shall be expected to provide himself/herself with a copy of these rules

At the time of admission, every student shall be required to sign a declaration that on admission he/she submits himself/herself to the disciplinary jurisdiction of the Vice-Chancellor and several authorities of the University who may be vested with the authority to exercise discipline under the Acts, the Statutes, the Ordinances and the rules that have been framed therein by the University.

Prohibition of and Punishment for Ragging

1. Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited, within the premises of the College/Department or Institution and any part of the Delhi University system as well as on public transport.

2. Any individual or collective act or practice of ragging constitutes gross indiscipline and shall be dealt with under this Ordinance.

3. Ragging for the purposes of this Ordinance, ordinarily means any act, conduct or practice by which dominant power or status of senior students is brought to bear on students freshly enrolled or students who are in any .way considered junior or inferior by other students and includes individual or collective acts or practices which-

(a) involve physical assault or threat to use of physical force; (b) violate the status, dignity and honour of women students; (c) violate the status, dignity and honour of students belonging to the scheduled castes and tribes; (d) expose students to ridicule and contempt and affect their self

esteem; (e) entail verbal abuse and aggression, indecent gestures and obscene behaviour.

4. The Principal of a College, the Head of the Department or an Institution, the authorities of the College, of University Hostels or Halls of Residence shall take immediate action on any information of the occurrence of ragging.

5. Notwithstanding anything in Clause (4) above, the Proctor may also suo moto enquire into any incident of ragging and make a report to the Vice-Chancellor of the identity of those who have engaged in ragging and the nature of the incident.

6. The Proctor may also submit an initial report establishing the identity of the perpetrators of ragging and the nature of the ragging incident.

7. if the Principal of a College or Head of the Department or institution or the Proctor is satisfied that for some reason, to be recorded in writing, it is not reasonably practical to hold such an enquiry, he/she may so advise theVice-Chancellor accordingly.

8. When the Vice-Chancellor is satisfied that it is not expedient to hold such an enquiry, his/her decision shall be final.

9. On the receipt of a report under Clause (5) or (6) or a determination by the relevant authority under Clause (7) disclosing the occurrence

of ragging incidents described in Clause 3 (a), (b) and (c), theVice-Chancellor shall direct or order rustication of a student or students for a specific number of years.

10. TheVice-Chancellor may in other cases of ragging order or direct that any student or students be expelled or be not for a stated period, admitted to a course of study in a college, departmental examination for one or more years or that the results of the student or students concerned in the examination or examinations in which they appeared be cancelled.

1. 3% of the total number of sanctioned seats are reserved for admission to various undergraduate courses under Sports quota.

2. Sports forms are to be filled separately, available in the College office w.e.f. 5th June - 19th June 2013 from 10am-1.00 (excluding Saturday and Sunday).
