Pran receives Dadasaheb Phalke award at his home

Legendary actor Pran Sikhand better known as Pran was today honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award

by Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari at his residence in Mumbai.

Pran, 93 known as Bollywood's Black gold, could not attend the ceremony in New Delhi due to ill-health. It is

probably for the first time that an artiste was given the Phalke award at his home.

Best known for his portrayal of negative roles in Hindi movies like Milan, Madhumati, Kashmir ki Kali, the veteran

actor was honoured with a 'Swarna Kamal' (golden lotus) medallion, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a shawl.

Wheel chair bound Pran, dressed in a kurt-pyjama, received the award at his apartment in Pali Hill, Bandra.

He was accompanied by daughter Pinky and son Sunil.

"He was not well so it was our responsibility to give him the award at his place. He thanked everyone," Tewari said.

When asked if the felicitation came late, Tewari said, "There is a procedure that is followed for the awards. It is the

jury that decides when to give the award."

In the past Dilip Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Dev Anand and Yash Chopra to name a few have received the prestigious

award.

Even Pran's children expressed happiness over the honour.

"He (Pran) is also happy. We all are happy that they (Minister) came here to give the award. It feels good. We did a

party and enjoyed," Pinky said.

The veteran actor was not keeping well since sometime.

"He is better than before. He is fine," Sunil said.

When asked if the award came late, he said, "We don't want to get into all this."

Pran has acted in more than 350 films in a career spanning six-decades, giving memorable performances in movies

like 'Milan', 'Madhumati', 'Kashmir Ki Kali' and 'Upkaar'.

Such was the magic of his unique on-screen villainy that people stopped naming their children 'Pran' at the height of

his fame. He ruled the industry from 1969 to 1982.

Greatness of Dadasaheb Phalke award gets bigger

after honouring Pran: Manish Tewari

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari, who presented the Dadasaheb Phalke award to veteran Bollywood

actor Pran, on Friday said his contribution to Indian cinema has been huge and added that the greatness of the award gets

bigger after honouring Pran.

"It's a great honour to present the honour to Pran saab. The Dadasaheb Phalke award has become even more prestigious now

that Pran sahab has received it," Tewari told media at Pran's residence.

The 93-year-old veteran actor was unable to visit Delhi to collect the award due to his ill health.

Although it has been a tradition that the winner has to go to Delhi to receive the award, it is probably the first time that an

artiste will receive his award at his home.

Pran, whose career is spanned over six decades, was seen in every big Bollywood film of the 1960s and 70s.

Some of his memorable roles are in movies like Ram Aur Shyam, Purab aur Paschim, Karz, Upkaar Sharaabi

andZanjeer to name a few from the list of movies.

He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in 2001.
