With the completion of 50 years as a centre for providing high quality education to meet the growing needs of internationalization and globalization, IIFT constantly strives to raise the bar every year in terms of quality of students as well as the course curriculum. At IIFT, the course content and curriculum are reviewed regularly in order to align them to recent developments in various disciplines and cater to the needs of the industry.

The students of our flagship programme of MBA (International Business) go through a series of foundation courses in their first two trimesters where they equip themselves with the tools to understand the advanced courses in various domains. Moving ahead, they undergo core courses in Finance, Marketing, Strategy and trade coupled with substantive courses in International Business. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was set up on 2nd of May 1963 with the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as an Institution with a focus on foreign trade related research and training. Since its inception, the Institute has evolved and undergone major transformations and has, over the years, broadened the scope and dimensions of its academic activity that now encompasses the full spectrum of international business.

Today, the Institute, in its 51st year of existence, is widely recognized for its knowledge and resource base, its rich heritage and strong alumni network both in India and abroad. An organization like IIFT grows from within but only after taking the nourishment from its environment. The more numerous and difficult the challenges thrown up by the surrounding system, the greater has been the effort to come up to the level to meet the emerging tasks. The ever evolving character of the foreign trade sector continuously throws up new opportunities and challenges which the Institute in its own way attempts to face by re-delineating the contours of its activities.

LocationNew Delhi Campus: Located in Qutab Institutional Area, overlooking green ridge and historical Qutab Minar, the

IIft – a gLorIous JourneY

IIFT Campus is considered to be one of the finest in the country. The campus spread over 6.5 acres of land houses two academic blocks and two residential blocks for students and visiting faculty. Be it the imposing structure of the “atrium”, the mystic beauty of the architectural design called “eye of the universe”, or the splendor of the campus in full bloom in winter, it never fails to impress the visitors.

Kolkata Campus: IIFT Kolkata Campus is currently operating from Sector 5, Salt Lake City. However, IIFT’s own Campus is located in South Kolkata near Ruby Hospital. The Campus is expected to be operational very soon.

Release of Postage Stamp on IIFTThe Prime Minister had released the Golden Jubilee Stamp to commemorate the legacy which IIFT has carved in its rich existence. It became exclusive educational institute to be accorded this privilege and shows the trust that the nation has put in IIFT.

Prominent institutions, national and international organizations that have been consulting the Institute on issues related to international business include: RBI, FICCI, CII, FIEO, CID, QCI–Harvard University, European Union Office, USAID, UNDP, ESCAP, Commonwealth Secretariat, German Development Institute, IFC-World Bank and Central & State Governments of India. IIFT has over the years undertaken path-breaking research studies in association with organizations like the WTO, World Bank, UNCTAD and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Strong research and consultancy capabilities of IIFT faculty with multi-disciplinary focus lead to creation of cutting edge knowledge with implications for policy and development action.

Current portfolio of research includes: Trade Policy Research, Functional Research, Preferential & Foreign Trade Agreements, Survey Research and Database Development. Some of the major research papers in hand are:

1. Study on the Destination Specific Elasticity of Demand for Top 10 Commodity Groups Exported to Top 10 Countries having Trade Surplus and Trade Deficit.

2. Ensuring India’s Energy Security: Preparation of a Matrix of Energy and Fertilizer Products and Identifying Export Opportunities to Finance the Imports.

3. Project Survey Report on Indian Accountancy Sector – Potential to become Global Hub.

4. India’s Trade Potential.

5. Advisory Services to Kolkata Port Trust.

Over the years, IIFT has broadened its academic framework by providing management education and PhD courses. Its endeavour should not only be to produce successful managers, business leaders and academic thinkers but also to prepare them as socially conscious citizens who have the capacity and willingness to respond and contribute to our society’s needs.

International ConferenceIIFT organizes an International Conference on Empirical Issues in International Trade & Finance every two years. The Fourth Conference will be organized in December 2014 at the Delhi Campus.

The MSME CentreKeeping in view that the MSME sector would continue to play a crucial role in our globalizing economy towards national development, the Institute had set up the MSME Centre in May 2005 in order to provide continuous support to the MSME sector by carrying out activities which can broadly be classified into conducting Training Programmes, provision of Business Intelligence services through comprehensive information hub and acting as a catalyst for interfacing with other concerned and associated institutions and organizations.

Centre for International Trade in Technology (CITT)With the primary objective of actualizing India’s potential in technology trade and addressing the complexities involved, IIFT had set up CITT in 2001 with financial and technical support from the DSIR, Government of India.

It is a unique institutional arrangement in which roles of active players in international technology trade, especially those of Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and Ministry of Science & Technology are being synthesized. It is well recognized that building up of technology trade requires sustained efforts over a period of time.

The objectives of the Centre for International Trade in Technology are to:

(b) Support the corporate sector by providing access to relevant global, commercial intelligence and analytical review of market potential of priority markets;

(c) Develop a cadre of experts and trainers to make available specialized training to the industry and for policy-making.

Centre for WTO StudiesThe Centre for WTO Studies was established in IIFT in 2002 to provide research, analytical and informational

support pertaining to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to the Department of Commerce, Government of India on a continuous basis. Over the years, the Centre has undertaken detailed research on various issues including agriculture, industrial tariffs, trade remedies, trade facilitation etc., which has provided a strong foundation for India’s engagement at the WTO. The Centre has also provided significant technical support to the Department of Commerce in various WTO disputes. In addition, the Centre has undertaken cutting edge research on some of the emerging areas of international trade such as climate change.

This Division helps IIFT in achieving the position of a Centre of Excellence in imparting education, training and conducting research in other parts of the world in the area of International Business and Trade. One of the key objectives of the IPD is to train government officials, diplomats, entrepreneurs, exporters, corporate sector and civil society members to develop broader understanding of issues related to international business and its implications on trade policy. MBa (InternatIonaL BusIness)

The ever-changing global and domestic environments and their interactions with each other have necessitated a structured understanding of the International Business Environment for any global manager. The MBA (International Business) is a foundation course that provides a professional and structured approach to develop candidates into competent business executives who can satisfy the ever-growing requirement for professionals who are qualified to function as International Business Managers.

MBA (IB), the flagship programme of IIFT, spans over a period of two years and is a fully-residential programme. IIFT is known for its academic rigor with courses laying equal emphasis on international implications of every concept. This very aspect of the curriculum at IIFT gives the participants an edge over other management students wherein they are sensitized about international issues and develop into global managers. The courses at IIFT are structured and intertwined in such a manner so as

to provide the perfect blend of each and every aspect of the management curriculum. This is further supplemented by port visits, summer projects, live projects, a social awareness programme, symposia, cultural events, community service activities, sports and different club activities each of which adds to the hands-on knowledge and provides the candidates the opportunity to apply various concepts in the real life situation.

Admission ProcedureAny institution can surpass itself only if it continues to provide an unparalleled learning environment for students to learn and grow. This becomes even more crucial when an institute offers a Master’s degree. At IIFT, we strive to achieve the same through a rigorous admission procedure involving an intensive written exam, group discussion, essay writing and an interview. The same is reflected in the 1:300 students to applicant ratio that has been maintained at IIFT.
