YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE

I have always thought I would likethe option of euthanasia. However, a debate at an ElderAbuse Day event in Takapuna lastweek has got me thinking.Minister for Seniors MaggieBarry opposes the End of LifeChoice bill, because she doesn’tfeel there is any way to fullyprotect vulnerable people whomight feel pressured intoeuthanasia. I was struck by thecomment of a palliative carenurse who said, in 24 years ofnursing, she hadn’t had a singlepatient who wanted to die, yet 3 to4 per cent of family members shesurveyed would chooseeuthanasia. Families find it hardto see a loved one suffering anddiminished. The debate also mademe question whether it is right toask another person to takeresponsibility for ending our life.Yet, I can see why many peoplewould like the choice if they weresuffering without hope ofimprovement. If we are to have alaw allowing euthanasia, it wouldneed every possible safeguard. Iam now questioning whether thatis even possible. - Jodi Yeats

Midwife helps ‘terrified’ SyriansDENISE PIPER

Emma Farmer says volunteering to help Syrian mothers and babies in Greece was a privilege. SUPPLIED

Harrowing tales of babies dyingdue to unsanitary conditions andpregnant woman having toendure extremes wereencountered by a maternityleader volunteering with Syrianrefugees in Greece.

Emma Farmer, head of mid-wifery at Waitemata DistrictHealth Board and Devonport resi-dent, spent four weeksvolunteering with Nurture Proj-ect International in the Greek cityof Thessaloniki.

The non-profit organisationworked with mothers and famil-ies who had fled the war in Syriaand were awaiting permanentresettlement.

Farmer said the Syrians werevery family-focused and did notwant the war to take away theopportunity to have children, despite it not being an ‘‘ideal’’time to have a baby.

For example, an eight-monthpregnant woman had to walk foreight days to get to the relativesafety of Thessaloniki. Anothermother travelled on an eight-hourtrain ride to Athens when herbaby was just a day old.

Farmer’s volunteer workincluded encouraging and sup-porting mothers to breastfeed, asthe insanitary conditions in refu-gee camps meant there was a riskof death with bottle feeding.

Farmer also supportedmothers before and after birth, even though she was not able tohelp during delivery.

‘‘The Greek hospitals did notlet anybody in, even the partner. The women were terrified; it wasvery Third World.

‘‘We did manage to get anArabic translator in for one.’’

Farmer said the Greek govern-ment closed the refugee camps

due to the unsanitary conditionsand put the refugees into apart-ments, where families felt veryisolated.

Being able to help with famil-ies’ social care was the highlightof Farmer’s volunteer work.

‘‘It was an absolute pleasuregoing into people’s homes and sit-ting down and talking with them;it’s such a privileged position.’’

Farmer responded to a Face-

book post advertising the volun-teer post, after seeing news storiesof the Syrian refugees and want-ing to do something to help.

it took two people to replaceher position at Waitemata, whereshe leads 150 staff and 200 self-employed midwives.

Farmer encouraged anyoneconsidering volunteering to do it,saying it improved skills andincreased appreciation.

Bus wanted from Albany to airportAMY BAKER

John Watson has been trying to assess public demand for a bus to the airport

since last year. AMY BAKER/FAIRFAX NZ

North Auckland residents arejumping aboard the band wagonfor an idea for a bus service fromthe North Shore to Auckland air-port.

Since last year, Albany wardcouncillor John Watson has beenworking to gauge public interestin a service from Albany Stationto Auckland Airport.

A call for feedback on the pro-posal on Neighbourly.co.nz just afortnight ago, has garnered morethan 70 replies so far.

Watson said the comments andother feedback would suggest thatsuch a service is in demand andone that people would want to use.

‘‘There’s a real logic to havinga service leaving from our nice,

new, modern, clean bus terminal. It makes it so much more con-venient for people just to getdropped off there or to catch abus,’’ he said.

He estimates the service wouldbe of use to around 300,000residents from all over the shoreand further north. While rail tothe airport was a future possi-bility, Watson said that thiswasn’t really a solution for thearea, as north Aucklanders wouldstill need to get over the bridge inthe first instance.

After establishing public inter-est, Watson said the next stepwould be to approach operators tosee who might be willing to trialit. To give feedback, [email protected].

Euthanasia bill divides, raises concernsDENISE PIPER

North Shore MP

Maggie Barry has

been canvassing

constituents on

the End of Life

Choice bill.

SUPPLIED

North Shore seniors and thosewho work with elderly arestrongly divided on support for anew euthanasia bill.

David Seymour’s End of LifeChoice bill was drawn from theballot for private member’s bills, although it was unlikely to bedebated before Parliament breaksfor the general election.

The bill gives adults with a ter-minal illness, or a grievous andirremediable medical condition, the option of requesting medicalaid in dying.

Seymour said safeguardswould include two doctors havingto sign off that the person genu-inely wished to end their life.Patients must be in an advancedstate of irreversible decline andexperiencing unbearable suffer-ing that cannot be relieved.

At a Takapuna meeting lastThursday, Minister for Seniorsand North Shore MP MaggieBarry said she was inclined tovote against the bill but wanted toknow what constituents thought.

Barry said she thought the billdid not have enough safeguardsfor vulnerable people, particu-larly seniors, who could becoerced into ending their life.

‘‘It does not protect the vulner-able. In order for some people tohave a choice about their end-of-life care, that choice is going to beremoved for some people.

‘‘We need to be very, very care-ful about what we allow to gothrough in law,’’ she warned.

Having been a sponsor of a hos-pice in Wellington, Barry said theend of life need not be full ofsuffering, if people got the rightpalliative care.

The room was divided about

whether or not to support the bill. One woman opened up to say

she was in favour of the bill, asshe wanted to make a choiceabout how she died.

The woman said she hadnursed family members as theydied, including her husband. ‘‘Allof those people died the death of a

dog, despite hospice care.‘‘I think each of us in this room

deserves to make the choice forourselves; those who choose tobreathe to the bitter end can do so.I will choose another way, in myown time.’’

But Marguerite Sakey, a palli-ative care worker, said she disag-

reed with the bill, calling it ‘‘hid-eous’’. In 24 years of palliativecare, she had never had a patientwho had asked to be euthanased.

However, when Sakey inter-viewed family members after theperson had died, about 3 to 4 percent of family members were insupport of euthanasia.

Cup could put wind insails of house pricesDENISE PIPER

Team NZ have won the first four races in the cup final against Team USA. GILLES MARTIN-RAGET

An America’s Cup win could push uphouse prices on the beachy North Shore, but Team NZ will need to work harder.

Emirates Team NZ won the first fourraces in the America’s Cup final againstOracle Team USA. As they took a grip onthe series, Kiwi fans were allowing them-selves to speculate what might happen ifthey took back the Auld Mug.

A win would be good for Auckland’seconomy and infrastructure, sparkingdevelopment like Wynyard Quarter.

Martin Cooper, managing director ofHarcourts Cooper & Co, said when Auck-

land last hosted the America’s Cup therewas a high demand for rental accommo-dation, as crew, support members and theirfamily settled into the area.

The spotlight on Auckland’s ‘‘beautiful’’Hauraki Gulf also garnered some interestfrom overseas property buyers looking tobuy holiday homes.

Cooper said, for house prices to really beaffected, the cup would have to be won thensuccessfully defended in Auckland.

Peter Thompson, Barfoot & Thompsonmanaging director, agreed a win did notguarantee a boom in Shore house prices, asracing could be confined to the inner har-bour, rather than being closer to the Shore.

RATEPAYER’S LAMENTFurther to Tom Dillane’s article ,Ryman Health Care are a popular,

responsible, contributor to manyaspects of society. They obviouslyhad plans A, B and C in place andstuck their necks out for the mostlucrative, in the interests ofshareholders. Council roboticallyapproved Plan A withoutconsultation with a community, close knit, and highly sensitive toits best needs, environmentallyand socially. Are we getting anyvalue at all from those elected? Dowe have to do the due diligencenecessary, independently, atpersonal cost, effectively payingour rates twice, for something tobe done properly?

JOBS, BUT NO SOLUTIONYour ‘‘Stormwater jobs’’ item(April 13) correctly identifiesstormwater as polluted rainwater– road runoff carries heavy metals(copper, zinc, etc), hydrocarbons

(oils, combustion by-products),organic matter (leaves, faeces),and sediment. But, HealthyWaters manager Craig McIlroyand others offer no real measuresto remove these pollutants, despite plans for $33 million ofprojects.

‘‘Healthy Waters worksclosely…’’ ‘‘Local boards advocateand support…’’ ‘‘Initiativesinclude restoration…’’ ‘‘Streetfurniture to be reorganised…’’‘‘Wash cars on grass…’’ Andmore…

These are peripheral fluff andnonsense – roads are generatingtonnes each year of pollutedsediment – trap the sediment, trapthe pollutants. We have knownthis for years; we have knownhow to do it for years; where is thepolitical will for action, notwords?

And, don’t just ‘‘woof’’ thepollutants further offshore withlonger pipes, as George Woodsuggested.

We need to actively preventpollutants entering ourenvironment.

‘‘Before we wereopen, we weregetting phone callsasking when wewere opening.’’Jacqui Cheal, general manager

Ramada Suites Albany has been an almost overwhelming success since opening its doors at the start of April. DENISE PIPER/FAIRFAX NZ

It is not at a tourist destinationand it has views of a car park, butone of the country’s newest hotelsis already doing a roaring trade.

Ramada Suites Albany openedits doors in April and will have itsofficial opening on June 29.

General manager Jacqui Chealsaid the Shore was crying out foraccommodation, particularly forbusinesspeople, due to the growthof businesses in the area.

‘‘Before we were open, we weregetting phone calls asking aboutwhen we were opening.

‘‘There was definitely a need,’’she said.

The Ramada was the firstpurpose-built hotel on the Shorefor about 10 years and is one ofvery few in the area.

Its location overlookingAlbany Bus Station’s park ‘n’ rideand the Northern motorway madeit very convenient, especially forbusiness travellers, Cheal said.

The hotel had 66 servicedsuites which all had kitchen andlaundry facilities, plus double-glazing to keep out any trafficnoise, she said.

The high demand meant theRamada had good occupancyrates since it opened, includingbeing 98 per cent full on someweekdays.

The hotel was also fully bookedduring the World Masters Games, which was on throughout Auck-land when the hotel had justopened, Cheal said.

It was also booked well inadvance for special events, shesaid. An international sports teamwas set to stay later in the year

and some people were alreadybooking for the Ed Sheeran con-cert next March.

‘‘It’s been almost overwhelm-ing, the response.’’

Other guests included a familywaiting for a new house to be fin-ished, Cheal said.

Due to customer requests, the

hotel was changing one of itssuites into a meeting room, suit-able for 12 to 14 people with asmall break-out room.

‘‘We get at least one to two callsevery week asking for a meetingroom,’’ Cheal said.

Complimentary services werestarting to open up around the

new hotel, including a cafe, gymand retail services.

Eighteen privately ownedapartments were also being com-pleted in a new block next to thehotel.

Ramada was part of the Wynd-ham group, the biggest hotelchain in the world.

‘‘One person that Iadmire is my year 9math teacher MrBailey, who inspiredme to work hard inmaths. He helpedme to understandalgebra from thestart and now I findit interesting.’’

LOOK WHO’STALKING

How long have you livedhere and where are you from?

I was born at North ShoreHospital and I have lived aroundthe North Shore all my life.

Describe yourneighbourhood.

The neighbourhood that I livein is nice and quiet. There is abeach close by and Milford is justdown the road.

What is your earliestmemory of the Shore?

One of my earliest memories ofthe Shore is riding in my trolleyup and over the skateboard bowlin Sunnynook park.

It was great, zooming down asfast as I could, then sort-of gettingair time when I came up and out.

What are the greatestadvantages to living here?

Some great advantages ofliving on the Shore is that thereare good schools ranging fromprimary to university.

There are many shops thatcover fashion to technology, andthere are lots of indoor andoutdoor activities to take part in.

Where is your favouriteNorth Shore beach and why?

I don’t really have a specific

favourite beach but I love the onesthat have a pontoon or a wharf todive off.

Who is the person youadmire the most and why?

One person that I admire is myyear 9 math teacher Mr Bailey, who inspired me to work hard inmaths.

He helped me to understandalgebra from the start and now Ifind it interesting and fun to work

out the problems and be rewardedwith satisfaction and the correctanswer.

What do you like least aboutthe North Shore and how canwe fix it?

The thing that I don’t reallylike about the Shore is the trafficon Forest Hill Rd.

The bus takes ages in themornings and sometimes this canhappen in the afternoons.

This could probably be fixed bymaking public transport moreviable by having more bus lanesand upgrading the bus network tocompensate.

Where is the best place to

have a meal?I am not sure, but I can

recommend all the cafes andrestaurants in Milford, as theyhave good food and delicacies atlow prices.

What do you like to doduring the weekends?

During the weekends I like toplay multi-player games with myfriends and go swimming at thebeach.

Also I enjoy hiking, and I dotarget shooting and orienteeringthrough school.

I am also involved with theScouting movement in NewZealand and recently received the

Chief Scout Award, which ourSunnynook group hasn’t hadanyone complete since I started asa Kea at the age of 6.

The Chief Scout Award is thehighest award in Scouts and testsskills in leadership, initiative andcommitment.

Only around 150 scouts in NewZealand achieve this award eachyear.

The award was signed off bythe Governor General, DamePatsy Reddy.

I am currently doing Duke ofEdinburgh with Venturers and Ialso help out as a youth leaderwith Keas.

large glass of water from your drinking water tap eachmorning before you use any water. This removes anymetals that may have dissolved from your plumbing

New Zealand’s water can be slightly acidic. Acidic watercan dissolve metals – this is known as plumbosolventwater. If water stays for several hours in yourhousehold pipes, it can dissolve heavy metals in thepipes, such as lead or copper. Small amounts of thesemetals may then enter your water supply.

The Ministry of Health recommends flushing a tap as asimple precaution for all households, including thoseon public and private water supplies. The health riskfrom your drinking water is small, but a build-up ofheavy metals in your body can cause health problems.

Plumbosolvency is not about the quality of yourdrinking water but about whether the water has hadprolonged contact with metals. We continue to meetthe requirements of the Drinking Water Standards forNew Zealand 2005 (revised 2008) and deliver safewater that you can enjoy from your taps each day.You can find our water quality reports on our websiteby searching for ‘water quality’ and clicking the‘reports and publications’ link.

A major diesel spill from a North Shore Hospital generator into Lake Pupuke, a year

ago, killed at least two birds and left 20 in care. TOM DILLANE

Spill leads to changesFELICITY REID

One year on from a major diesel spillon Lake Pupuke, a local body poli-tician is reassuring the public thatlessons have been learnt.

On the evening of June 22, 2016,Takapuna residents noticed a fuelsmell at the southern end of LakePupuke, by morning, diesel wasclearly visible across a large sectionof the freshwater lake. The spill wastraced back to a North Shore Hos-pital generator. Auckland Councilbelieve between 100 litres to 300L ofdiesel entered the lake.

Information provided to theDevonport-Takapuna Local Boardthis year states three potentialcauses: the diesel filtering system, the diesel transfer system or humanerror.

Kaipatiki Local Board memberAnne-Elise Smithson followed theincident closely . In a letter shewrote to the North Shore Times, prior to becoming a local board

member, she was critical of the time-liness of the authorities response.‘‘Will it take residents reportingheadaches from the diesel smell, before a swift response is taken?’’she wrote.

Having now accessed informationprovided to Auckland Council froman investigation into the spill,Smithson is confident that stepshave been taken to prevent a similarcontamination happening in thefuture. Smithson said the WaitemataDHB has made improvements to itsgenerator maintenance plan and fueltransfer protocols, plus the fre-quency of monitoring and mainten-ance checks has increased. Inaddition, Beca has been com-missioned to design changes to theautomated alarm system and trans-fer systems. ‘‘Safeguards for theenvironment and people’s healthalways need to be top of mind. Thanks to public pressure, it lookslike that lesson may have been takento heart,’’ Smithson said.

Blankets and pyjamasgifted to communitySTAFF REPORTER

City Impact Church’s Tiana Wijohn, Eugene Tuigamala and Olivia Campbell with donated blankets.

Hundreds of people will be warmer thiswinter after a church collected hundreds ofblankets and pyjamas to help families inneed.

As part of City Impact Church’s annualCommunity Impact Day, volunteersdonated 700 blankets and 500 sets ofpyjamas to families throughout Auckland.

The items were donated by individualsand families who attend City ImpactChurch on the North Shore and in Mt Wel-lington.

The church’s senior pastors, Peter andBev Mortlock, said giving this items was a

simple way to reach out but would make adifference.

‘‘We knew of so many people in our com-munity facing a cold winter withoutenough blankets this year,’’ Peter said.

Church members also visited 57 homesto carry out cleaning, maintenance andgardening.

Fifteen volunteers cleaned windows andovens and did gardening at Birkdale Court.

Another group helped out a mother-of-seven whose youngest child was diagnosedwith cancer last year. The church’s Com-munity Impact Days regularly see a turn-out of more than 500 volunteers. Seecommunityimpact.co.nz for more.

The Devonport Peninsula Precincts Society want to have say on developments in their

area.

Group fighting forright to be heardFELICITY REID

A residents’ group that successfullyfought plans for a huge retirementvillage in historic Devonport isseeking assurances from centralGovernment candidates they willseek community input on major dev-elopments.

The Devonport PeninsulaPrecincts Society spent more than$70,000 fighting the consent forRyman Healthcare’s 600-bed, sixstorey, retirement complex, before acompromise was agreed throughEnvironment Court-led mediation.

Now society chairman Iain Reahas sought assurances from politicalcandidates across the spectrum theNorth Shore community won’t haveto go through the same thing again.

‘‘Neighbourhoods are changingfast across the city, there are five bigsites slated for large-scale develop-ment on the Devonport peninsulaalone, and people will have con-cerns,’’ Rea said.

‘‘This is an election issue. Com-munities will not take kindly to theerosion of their rights to be heard.’’

Rea was concerned changes to theResource Management Act (RMA)threaten the notification processthrough which the public can have asay.

‘‘The power of public submissionsto affect change is reducing,’’ hesaid.

North Shore MP, National’sMaggie Barry, said the ResourceLegislation Amendment Bill waspassed earlier this year to better sup-port economic growth, increasehousing supply and affordability, provide better infrastructure andless bureaucracy while ensuring theenvironment is well managed andprotected. Barry said more consul-tation and openness from developerscould make a positive difference onhow a development is received bythe community it is being built in.

Labour’s candidate for the NorthShore, Romy Udanga, felt public par-ticipation was important. ‘‘Publicparticipation can be a strong stabili-sing force in a changing environ-ment,’’ Udanga said.

The Greens were concernedabout the erosion of the RMA’s noti-fication process. ‘‘Meaningful andaccessible public participation is acornerstone of the RMA. People havea right to be involved in decisions onconsent applications which affecttheir neighbourhood and places theycare about,’’ Greens senior policyadvisor Holly Donald said.

Rangitoto College triotackle the acne curseZIZI SPARKS

From left, Josef Morgan, Will Cole and Max Lawton who created Clearfree

as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme 2017. ZIZI SPARKS/FAIRFAX NZ

Acne is an issue most youngadults struggle with, but, according to Will Cole, manydon’t do anything about itbecause it’s too hard.

So the 16-year-old, along withtwo friends created an easy sol-ution.

Josef Morgan, Max Lawton, and Will have created a busi-ness which sells a manuka oil-based facial spray, as part of theYoung Enterprise Scheme, acompetition which sees studentsfrom around the countrydevelop a business.

Clearfree was started inMarch and, while it just sells thespray at this moment, they hopeto expand with other naturalskin products.

‘‘It’s solving a problem ourage group experiences and a lotof people feel unsure about theuse of chemicals on their faces,’’Will said.

‘‘A lot of people feel reallyinsecure, but some don’t see analternative they agree with,’’Josef explained.

So the group, from RangitotoCollege, made severalprototypes using a combinationof manuka oil, manuka oilhydrosol and manuka oil con-centrate, until they found onethat worked by putting it to thetest on 30 trial participants.

‘‘It appeared to have an effectwithin about a week,’’ Will said.

The trio had big dreams for

their brand with hopes of cre-ating more products furtherdown the line and expandinginternationally where there is ademand for manuka-basedproducts.

‘‘We want to grow our brandand potentially get it overseas,’’said Max.

‘‘There’s nothing like it onthe market.’’

He said the fact their firstproduct is in a spray formmeans you don’t have to touchyour face to apply it, spreadinggerms in the process.

The pair said their productcan be used by young adults

with acne or eczema or byadults for manuka’s antisepticand anti-inflammatory proper-ties.

‘‘We’re not just going forpeople our age, we can help lotsof people,’’ Josef said.

Their business has made it tothe Auckland Regional sectionof the contest, the finals ofwhich take place on June 27.

If they make it past that stageof the competition, the nationalawards take place in Decemberand include a total of $22,000 inprize money.

‘Polluter-pays’ modelJAMES PASLEY

A national freshwater plan isadvocating for a ‘polluter pays’ pol-icy to be enforced in Auckland.

Earlier this month political par-ties were urged to adopt a seven-stepplan to help address the country’sfreshwater quality issues.

The plan, put together by tour-ism, science, health, recreation andenvironment organisations, recom-mended a ‘polluter pays’ policy wasadopted by councils, making organ-isations financially responsible forpollution.

Choose Clean Water was one ofthe organisations involved with theplan. Spokesperson Marnie Prickettsaid consequences were not strongenough to deter Auckland polluters.

‘‘At the moment if you can pollutewilly nilly, there’s no incentive toinnovate and change your infra-structure.’’

Auckland Council’s HealthyWaters Andrew Chin said a polluterpays scheme could be considered, but it would be difficult toimplement because of how complexpollution monitoring is.

For example, many householdspollute stormwater systems, fromeveryday tasks like vehicle washingon driveways, Chin said.

‘‘However, these are importantdiscussions to have.’’

While environment minister DrNick Smith said the Governmentwould not adopt the plan, the GreenParty’s Catherine Delahuntysupported the policy.

The mental health patient claimed Waitemata DHB’s smoke-free policy was inhumane

and discriminatory but the Supreme Court disagreed. CHARLOTTE CURD/FAIRFAX NZ

DHB patient losessmoking appealBROOKE BATH

A mental health patient who claimedhis rights were breached by a smoke-free policy at Waitemata DistrictHealth Board has lost an appeal inthe Supreme Court.

The man, in his 30s who has namesuppression, claimed the board’ssmoke-free policy was inconsistentwith the New Zealand Bill of Rightsand the DHB was obliged to have asmokers’ zone on its grounds.

He lost appeals to the High Courtand the Court of Appeal, butappealed to the Supreme Court inNovember 2016.

However in a decision by theSupreme Court, released last week,it unanimously rejected the appeal.

It did not order any costs be paid. The man suffered from paranoid

schizophrenia as a result of a trau-matic brain injury after a car crash.

He was an inpatient at the board’stwo adult mental health units,Waiatarau in Waitakere Hospitaland Taharoto in North Shore Hos-pital, over a 12-week period fromJune 2012.

Both units have a strict non-smoking policy unless the patientleaves the grounds. The patientspent most of his time in the openward, allowing him to leave the siteto smoke, the court said.

However, he was admitted to theIntensive Care Unit on threeoccasions for a total of 11 days. Dur-ing that time he was confined and

unable to smoke. He spent a furthertwo days in hospital where he wasalso not permitted to smoke.

In the Supreme Court, the patientclaimed the DHB was obliged, undersection six of the Smoke-freeEnvironments Act 1990, to establisha dedicated smoking room in mentalhealth units.

Second, he claimed the DHB’ssmoke-free policy had breached hisrights under the the Bill of RightsAct; citing the right to be treatedwith humanity; the right not to besubjected to cruel or disproportion-ately severe treatment; the right tobe free from discrimination on thebasis of disability; and the right to ahome or private life, which heargued included the right to chooseto smoke.

However, the court found underthe Smoke-free Environments Act,the DHB was not obliged to provide asanctioned smokers’ room in itsmental health units.

It also found the way the smoke-free policy was implemented did notbreach the Bill of Rights Act and thepatient was treated the same as allother patients who need to be in ICU.

Chief executive Dr Dale Bramleysaid the DHB was ‘‘heartened’’ theSupreme Court had ruled in favourof a policy that supported positivehealth outcomes for patients.

‘‘To allow patients to smoke inour facilities when we know this isdamaging to health is inconsistentwith our goals,’’ Bramley said.

There’s nothing quite like ‘floating’– it is the ultimate in relaxation andhealing.Floatation therapy is based on a

revolutionary scientific approach todeep relaxation called RestrictedEnvironmental StimulationTechnique (or REST).A pod is filled with a solution of

water that is aprox 40%magnesium sulphate (or Epsomsalts). This increases the water’sdensity so you can float safelywithout effort. The water and theair inside the chamber aremaintained at skin temperature, meaning you experience a feelingof weightlessness.White directors Emma Robins

and Lani Allard are experts in thebeauty and holistic healthindustries.Emma says floating restricts or

eliminates all of the external stress-factors or stimuli normallyaffecting us every day. Floating incomplete darkness and silenceliberates large areas of the braindevoted to processing sensoryinformation, further increasing thedepth of mental relaxation.‘‘Through transdermal

absorption the body assimilatesmagnesium as it enters your skin.Sensory deprivation is a realbenefit. When you’re in the pod youaren’t being stimulated or using upenergy. Your entire body isdedicated to healing or recoveringfrom injury,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s also a

tool to assist the brain in reachinga deeply meditative state and anextremely relaxing way to escapethe chaos of today’s society. Yourfeel good hormones are stimulated, and mood is then elevated.’’Many celebrities and top level

pro sports people choose floattherapy such as Actor Zac Efronand basketballer Steph Curry. If it’s your first time floating it’s

worth doing at least twice within athree week period to reap all thebenefits. The first 10 minutes you’ll hear

calming music, followed by 45minutes of silence, and then thelast five minutes of music bringsyou back to awareness. After the float a cup of tea or

water is available on request in thefloat lounge and you are then ableto freshen up in the powder roomwith the hair dryer andstraightening irons. The entire experience satisfies

the soul. It is worth trying, and youcertainly do feel amazingafterwards.White has spas in both Herne Bay

OnlineshoppingupAlmost one in ten Kiwis are regularlyembracing the convenience ofshopping online, according to newresearch.A Mastercard survey of over 1000

New Zealanders found 87 per centsaying they have made at least onepurchase in the past three months. This is up 12 per cent from just twoyears ago.Top items to purchase online include

airfares, books, music and othermedia, and hotels.“New Zealanders see online

shopping as convenient and easy, andmost people tend to get to know andtrust their favourite online retailers.Increasingly we are seeing businessesuse the e-commerce environment toprovide customers with a greatcustomer experience, fostering trustand loyalty,” Peter Chisnall,Mastercard Country Manager for NewZealand and the Pacific Islands says. When asked about the most

important factors impacting onlineshopping, 89 per cent of consumerslook for a secure payment facilityoption, followed by convenientpayment methods (86 per cent) andprice (84 per cent).“The survey has revealed that

although getting the best price is a key

factor for Kiwis, safety and security isthe most important consideration. Werecommend customers take simplesafety precautions when shoppingonline by using trusted retailers andmonitoring their account in case anysuspicious activity occurs. In addition, customers can look out for Masterpassat the checkout, our cloud-basedwallet where their payment anddelivery information is storedsecurely,” Chisnall says.People who said they have not

purchased anything online in the pastthree months said they prefer to lookat the physical product or cannot findanything they want to buy online. Only6 per cent did not think onlineshopping was cost effective.“In terms of physical products,

people still appreciate checking outgoods out in person. However, as wecan see from the survey, theconvenience of online retailers isparticularly valued for services likebooking flights or securing tickets to aconcert,” Chisnall says.In terms of improving online

shopping, Kiwis would most like to seefree or minimal delivery charges, noadditional service charges andassurance of the security oftransactions.

HerocarbsweshouldbeeatingIf there’s one thing winter brings, aside from a boutof bad weather, it’s an inherent want to seek outillicit comfort foods. But comfort food doesn’t have to be unhealthy.

Here’s some healthy options.1. Warm foods like stews, casseroles, soups and

curries are not only hearty, but you can add plentyof vegetables which will boost the immune systemand increase antioxidants, beneficial for overallhealth.2. Load up on winter fruits and vegies packed with

vitamin C – like oranges, kiwifruit, mandarins, capsicum and broccoli. Not just great for overallimmune system function, they also protect cellsfrom damage caused by virus or bacteria.3. Seafood, red meat and nuts all contain zinc,

essential for keeping the immune systemfunctioning and assisting with cell regulation.4. Red wine, tea and herbs are packed with

antioxidants. They all contain flavonoids – acompound associated with reducing inflammationand helping the immune system.5. Porridge is a winter favourite that’s both warm

and comforting. Nutritionally it’s a healthy breakfastthat will fill you up, lower cholesterol levels andprovide sustained energy release.6. A winter soup using cannellini beans or

chickpeas will give you a great source of protein andprovide a good range of vitamins and minerals. Plussoup gives you extra fluid which is a bonus as weoften get more dehydrated in winter.
