The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 7

MEssAgE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The OBA of our School is considered to be one of the best in India and we are very proud of this. The OBA has a wealth of talent and has always been ready to share it with our present students. The OBA Buzz which you conduct is an excellent platform to discover and nurture talent. We deeply appreciate the time and energy you invest in this, knowing full well that you have other work commitments to handle.

You have the gratitude of our boys and their parents for the generous scholarships you provide to those who need the help. Thank you for helping us organise motivational talks and inspiring our boys with your success stories. Your unfailing goodwill, constant encouragement, generous contribution and timely help have made our task easier and our burden lighter in the noble task of providing quality education to our students.

We, the Jesuits, recognize the different facets of education. We are not just an institution providing tuitions – rather, we are an Education Centre providing an ocean of opportunities for our children to participate, perform, excel and shine in various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular fields. The new Sports Complex which was inaugurated yesterday is a concrete step in realizing the Jesuit vision of education as integral development of the human personality. We aim at providing opportunities to our students not only for their academic achievements but also for athletic accomplishments, aesthetic development and artistic flowering. It is our hope that our students will make good use of this new facility and claim it as their own.

This day has begun in a solemn manner and once the business part is done I am sure you will enjoy yourself to the fullest, meeting old friends, catching up on past years and recalling school stories. I wish you all the very best and pray for God’s blessings on each one of you in a very special way for the love and loyalty that you show towards your School. May Almighty God continue to be with us, guiding every step, leading us along the way, filling us with his grace and strength. May the blessings of our Patron Saint Joseph be with you always. Enjoy this, your very special day, the OBA Day.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 20158

MEssAgE FROM THE PREsIDENT

Dear Old Boys and now, Girls as well

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that your association has done very well for itself during 2014-15. Thanks to generous donations from Old Boys, our corpus funds have grown substantially. The corpus of the OBA, all funds included, is now more than Rs. 3.00 crores.

OBA CONNECT

Our satellite chapters in Coorg, Kerala, and Goa held their connect events in November ‘14, May ’15, and August ’15 respectively. All three events were opportunities to experience the excellent hospitality of the organizing teams. I would prevail upon all Old Boys to make it a point to attend at least one Connect event each year. That alone will gladden the hearts of the committees of our satellite chapters. Connect events are family affairs and the destinations are such that they lend themselves to family outings. Keep that in mind always. Most Old Boys come with their families and thoroughly enjoy themselves.

sALEH AHMED TROPHY

This annual fixture is the tennis ball, limited overs cricket match played between our OBA Cricket Team and those of the Alumni Associations of Bishop Cotton, Baldwins, Germains on our school grounds. Conducted during the month of March in celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph, this entire tournament is sponsored by Nadeem Ahmed of Saleh Ahmed. The Germains won again, making it the fifth time in a row. After mass at the school chapel, an excellent breakfast was served, followed by a sumptuous lunch after the matches. The OBA did a superb job this year again. TEACHER KAIZEN PROgRAMME

The OBA conducted an interactive pilot programme for teachers to see how classroom success could be improved. Twenty high school teachers participated and explored creative methods of teaching. The entire course, save for the module on dramatics, was conducted by old boys. Gopal Bengeri, A.G. Krishnaswamy, Siddharth Raja and Umakanth Alva comprise the OBA Kaizen Team. Mrs. Arundhati Raja conducted the module exploring the use of dramatics as a pedagogical tool. The content of the course is not to teach the principles of Kaizen, instead, it uses the principles of Kaizen to formulate its content and delivery. The feedback from teachers is very positive and encouraging. The school is keen that we keep up the tempo and conduct more programmes for the other teachers as well.

OBA BUZZ

This year, the scope of the OBA Buzz was expanded to include more than 15 events. So far, the Buzz was open only to classes 7 to 12. This year, however, all students from class 1 to 12 participated in events like Elocution, Debate, Quiz, Creative Writing, Mad Ads, JAM, Personality, Sketching, Painting, Collage, Singing, Instrumental music, Dramatics and Dance. Shashi Lewis headed the Buzz Team. Maurice Rebello conducted the quiz again for the 26th successive year.

CENTENARY BOOK

The work on the Centenary Book of the OBA will begin this year. Siddharth Raja is its Editor. The plan is to make the book more anecdotal rather than simply recount the history of the OBA down the ages with facts and figures. We will have interaction with several old boys across the globe, to collect and compile their experiences during their student days and as old boys and members of the Association as well. The book is expected to take two years to put together.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 9

I would urge all members to assist Siddharth in compiling the contents of the book. It could be with an interview, an article, some pictures, photographs, memorablia, or, even, lunch coupons of yesteryear – in fact, anything that has a story to tell about the OBA or any of its events or milestones

THE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDs

This year, the nominations process for The Lifetime Achievement and Young Achiever Awards was thrown open to members, for the first time. An Awards Sub committee was constituted with Zaki Khaleeli, Rajeev Shenoy, Umakanth alva and Vinay Kamath as its members. The sub committee drew up the guidelines, rules and process and published the same on the OBA website sjbhsoba.net, sent by e-mail the details to all batch coordinators and the entire database available with it. We even followed up with sms to 1,600 members whose cell numbers we have. They established a Jury of former Presidents of the OBA to make the final selection, based on the nominations cleared by the Scrutiny Committee.

The last date of filing nominations was extended four times, to allow members to nominate, as we felt that they are not expecting this process and, as a consequence, may take time to collect information and send in the nominations.

The response to the call for nominations was less than desirable and the Managing Committee did not receive too many nominations. We are sure that in the coming year, the response will improve substantially, and the Committee will have a satisfying time selecting persons to receive the Awards.

Please keep a look out for the call for nominations (slated for December – January 2015) and do respond and nominate your friends and / or classmates for the Awards, with all enclosures and details.

Fide et Labore.

IT IS RESOLVED THAT, in accordance with Article 13.1 of the Articles of Association and pursuant to the stipulated majority voting in favour hereof, the following proviso be added at the end of Article 7.2 of the Articles of Association: ‘Provided However That, in order to be eligible to file a nomination, and contest the election, for the office of President, First Vice President and Second Vice President, a member of the Association should have served at least three (3) years as a member of the Managing Committee, within the past seven (7) years preceding the date of the election where he wishes to file a nomination for such office.’

MANAgINg COMMITTEE REsOLUTION # 2

WHEREAS, as a matter of abundant clarification of the Articles of Association, the following insertion be made in the following Articles: RESOLVED THAT, (A), in Article 7.3 as regards the power of the Managing Committee to co-opt additional members, the words “but who shall not be voting members of the Managing Committee” be added at the end thereof. AND FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, (B), consequently, the words “of voting members only” be added in Article 9.3 after the words “show of hands”. * * * * * * * * The Managing Committee recommends the above two Resolutions for adoption by and at the Annual General Meeting of the members of the Association for the year 2015-16.

REsOLUTION PROPOsED BY MR. A.g. KRIsHNAsWAMY

The exception of the Secretary’s post to the requirement of a maximum tenure of three years, currently in place for every office bearer and member of the Managing Committee, needs to be in line with other office bearers’ tenures. That is, an exception cannot be made only for one post. Also, today there are a number of Old Boys willing to join the MC and work in different capacities including that of a secretary. In all fairness, all posts have to have a fixed tenure with no exceptions. A case in point is the current Joint Secretary who has filled the post admirably. Also, this 3 year maximum tenure stipulation should apply to the Joint Secretary / if and as renamed as “Secretary -- Administration” upon that post’s inclusion in the list of office bearers in Article

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 201514

7.1. Consequently, the sentence which exempted the Secretary in this behalf is proposed to be deleted. It is clarified that the three year period will start counting on and from the date of this AGM in 2015-16, for any incumbent in the post of Secretary.”

RESOLVED THAT, the last sentence of Article 7.2 be deleted.

REsOLUTION PROPOsED BY MR. IAN LEWIs:

He commended the batch coordinator, Vinay Kamath, for his efforts in organising his batch reunion.

96.4 The Presidential Address : The President gave a synopsis of the activities undertaken by the OBA during the year. He briefed the members about the Staff Medical Insurance fund which was single-handedly being run by Sumir Hinduja (1985). The Medical Insurance covered 296 individuals (serving/retired staff and their families) and reimbursed 24 of them for hospitalisation during the year. Total claims paid were Rs.6,80,000/-, total premium paid was Rs.3,84,000/-, premium per member with family was Rs. 3407/- (for insurance cover of Rs.2,00,000/- p.a.) and the total corpus in the fund was Rs. 64,50,000/- .

He said the local chapters expend substantial effort in organising them, they are family oriented, non-fund raising and fun events and hence exhorted all Old Boys to attend at least one of the events in a year. He mentioned the OBA Buzz which is normally held in June-July every year. Usually inter-house competitions are held in Elocution, Debate and Quiz. He said that this year, Music, Creative Writing and Dramatics were included and primary and middle school students were also allowed to participate. He thanked Fr.Clifford Sequeira, the Principal for his unstinted support to the event. He said that all the school annuals from 1910 till date had been scanned and were available as e-books. So it is now possible not only to view the annuals in their original design, but the text as well. All the scanned annuals have been installed on a touch-screen device in the OBA Office. This enables a person to search for names, events and dates in any annual. He explained about the new OBA Office which has a conference area, an LCD projector, a lounge area, Wi-Fi connection, computer systems and the scanned annuals. The project was largely financed by Old Boys, primarily from the ISC batch of 1972. Looking towards the future, the President discussed some of the activities/projects which had been planned for the OBA Centenary year (2018). These were a Science Exhibition (the OBA Alvie and Chat Science exhibition), a Teacher Training Programme and a Centenary book.

He mentioned that Mr. Alvarez managed the Annual Sports Day for the school, was the de facto administrator and the Secretary of the OBA. ACTIVITIEs OF THE OBA : 2014-2015

The OBA conducted a number of activities to bring Old Boys together. Reunions were held at Kerala, Coorg and Goa and these get-togethers brought Old Boys from various age groups to interact in the true Josephite spirit. The OBA also instituted schemes, funds collected under which were disbursed towards scholarships to needy students, promotion of cultural activities in the school, conduction of Career Guidance programmes for students and also towards welfare of staff.

In the previous year (2014-15) over Rs. 10 lakhs was given to needy students under the various scholarship schemes, Rs. 6.85 lakhs was paid as Mediclaim Insurance Premium for retired and current school staff and over Rs. 1 lakh was awarded in prizes to students producing outstanding results in the ICSE and ISC Exams. The OBA organized the OBA Buzz, the annual inter-house cultural competition for the school’s students of Class 5 onwards, which included events such as Debate, Elocution and Quiz. Certificates, trophies and cash prizes were awarded to the winners of the competitions. Apart from these, the OBA organized its annual Christmas Dinner, Welcome to OBA, the inter-alumni association tennis ball cricket tournament in celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph, the Blue & White Bash and the OBA Day. The OBA also gave out hampers to Senior Old Boys and staff.

scholarships to school:We had a total of 130 applications. Zaki Khaleeli and Brian D’Lima individually met 126 parents. Need-cum-merit was the criterion and a sum of Rs. 10 lakhs was awarded in scholarships. The need was around Rs. 15 lakhs but due to a shortage of funds, only around Rs. 10 lakhs was given out. Fee instalments were paid directly to the school and the applicants were informed of the same.

staff Medical Insurance:The Staff Medical Insurance scheme covers full-time teachers who have competed two years of service in the school and their families. Also, all retired teachers and staff who had completed 10 years of service are covered under the scheme along with their spouses. Sumir Hinduja, the brain behind the scheme, helps us in negotiating a good amount of premium. Last year, our premium was Rs. 6.85 lakhs and was paid fully by the OBA. It covers medical insurance for each family up to a maximum of Rs. 2 lakhs. This has benefited a number of teachers, retired and serving, as well as service staff of the school who would never have been able to afford good medical treatment on their own.

Awards:This year, over Rs. 1 lakh was given as prizes to the students passing out of the ISC and ICSE classes. The prizes that are given are for standing first in the school, being the best in studies and games, being the best swimmer, for securing the highest marks in each subject etc. The prizes include a trophy, a certificate and a cheque. These awards are sponsored by the Batch of 1968, Batch of 1975, Bashiruddin Babu Khan, Mario de P Miranda, Rev. Fr. Simon Furtado and Rajesh Kheny

OBA BUZZ – 2015:This year, we conducted a number of events under the umbrella of ‘OBA Buzz’. The events that were conducted were Debate, Elocution, Quiz, Essay Writing, Western Music, Indian Music, Instrumental Music and Inter-House Skit competitions. Maurice de Rebello and Shashi Lewis did an excellent job of conducting the Quiz competition.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 25

Shashi Lewis, with the help of Gopal Bengeri, Gavin Cordeiro and Ian Lewis conducted the Elocution and Debate competitions and the response was very positive. Our gratitude goes out to the above-mentioned Old Boys for taking time off to conduct these competitions. Thanks also go out to Shivaram who sponsored the Warrior Award for Elocution and Maurice de Rebello for sponsoring the prizes for Creative Writing.

Career guidance for the students of std. 10:The OBA, along with the PTA, conducted a Career Guidance programme for the students of Std. 10. 205 students took the test and most of the students along with their parents came for personal counselling sessions where various career options were recommended. Our thanks go out to the PTA for helping out and giving a wonderful opportunity to our budding Josephites to wisely choose their careers.

The OBA organized a special function for the students passing out of Stds. 10 & 12. N.K. Dilip, eminent lawyer and Old Boy from the Class of 1988, addressed the students and a memento and booklet on the OBA were given to each one of them. This was followed by tea.

Christmas Hampers:Joe D’Mello and Brian D’Lima visited very senior Old Boys as well as senior retired teachers and their families and gave them a Christmas Hamper. This hamper was sponsored by Pramodh Naidu. The retired teachers and Old Boys were grateful to the OBA for its thoughtfulness.

Fellowship Programmes:Blue & White Bash:The event was held at the Catholic Club and was attended by over 1000 people. The Band in attendance was A26 from Goa and it catered to all age groups.

OBA Day:OBA Day was celebrated on the 7th of September. The day started with Mass, celebrated by Fr. Anthony Joseph, Rector and assisted by Fr. Hedwig Da Costa, Old Boy and former Principal. Mass was followed by placing of a wreath at the War Memorial by Fr. Clifford Sequeira, Principal of the School. The School Flag was unfurled by a senior Old Boy and the singing of the School Song was led by the school choir. The School Song was sung with Old Boys grouped by their Houses.

Group photograph followed the Breakfast, where we had to take the photograph in two batches to accommodate all the Old Boys present.

At the AGM, two awards were given out - first, The OBA Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Rahul Sarpeshkar and second, The OBA Young Achiever of the Year Award to Mr. Robin Uthappa.

The Batch of 1989 sponsored the Breakfast and Lunch on OBA Day.

Christmas Dinner:This year, the Christmas Dinner saw an attendance of over 100 Old Boys from different batches. The committee hopes that in future, representation from younger batches of Old Boys will increase.

Celebration of the Feast of st. Joseph:This year, the entire amount of expense towards celebrating the Feast of St. Joseph was sponsored by Nadeem Ahmed. All those who attended were treated to a sumptuous breakfast, beer and an excellent biryani, all on the house. The Saleh Ahmed Trophy, for the winner of the inter-alumni association tennis ball cricket tournament,

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 201526

was won by the alumni association of St. Germain High School with the team representing the alumni association of Baldwin Boys’ High School coming in as the runners-up. All participants were given a memento, courtesy of Saleh Ahmed.

sJBHs OBA CONNECT:Chapters of the OBA at Coorg, Kerala and Goa organized excellent get-togethers for Old Boys of all ages under the banner of ‘SJBHS OBA CONNECT’. Old Boys from the 1950’s mixed with Old Boys from the 2000’s. Special thanks to C. C. Thimaiah, Abraham Pottamkulam, Lloyd Macedo and their respective committees for organizing the events. Reports filed by Gopal Bengeri on the events held at Coorg and Goa appear later.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 89

CITATION FOR RECIPIENT OF THE YOUNg ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR AWARD - 2014

The Old Boys’ Association would like to recognize the achievements of Robin Uthappa. While better known facts are freely available on the internet, we wish to celebrate not just Robin the cricketer but also Robin the person.

Robin joined school in 1994 and moved out in 2001. His single aim in school was – ‘I want to play cricket for India’. Robin always knew that he wanted to play for the Indian team. Robin’s mother would come to school pretty often to ask for class notes that were missed because he was busy playing cricket. Like any concerned parent, she worried about what would become of her son as he was completely engrossed in cricket. His mother need not have worried. Robin is, today, a cricketer par excellence.

When Robin decides to blaze, he’s literally on fire. At the crease, he’s a human dynamo sending fielders on a leather hunt. An outstanding batsman and a first-class cricketer, he has overcome many odds in his eventful life to reach where he is today. Robin always set the highest standards for himself and continuously strived to achieve perfection. While most of his schoolmates were content playing for the school, Robin always aspired to be on the Indian team. Pushing himself at the nets, he would finish his batting practice and rather than sitting and watching others play, he would try and improve his leg spin bowling or pull on his keeper’s gloves and polish his wicket-keeping skills.

Robin was born on 11th November 1985 to Venu Uthappa, a former international hockey umpire, and Roselyn. Robin is married to Sheethal Goutham. Having a good sense of humour, a plump Robin would keep his friends entertained with his version of the Arabic belly dance before net practice. He would also sometimes get mischievous – once, when the class period was coming to an end, Robin got a bright idea – burst a cracker in class and he went on to do just that. Robin burst a cracker and the teacher burst a blood vessel.

At school matches, the opposition dreaded his arrival and Josephites would go wild in the stands in anticipation of fireworks. Robin never disappointed. An admirable quality is Robin’s thought process on the field. During a two day school final, St. Joseph’s was chasing the ball for most of the two days. While everyone wanted to go inside and chill out with a cold drink, Robin, still alert as ever, was giving the captain inputs and egging the bowlers on. Robin always had a penchant for big hits. There was this match against Bangalore High School and all were thrilled merely to be playing on the main ground at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Robin was batting and simply clobbered the ball onto the second floor stands in the stadium. Even as a schoolboy, his awesome strength and knack to hit the ball was way beyond his young years. His parents would attend many of the school matches and cheer for Robin and the team. As a boy, he was expected to bail out his team during periods of crises. As a man, clearly, things haven’t changed.

Recently, Robin has been a part of the winning side at the inaugural T20 World Cup and the 2014 IPL, where he was awarded the Purple Cap for being the highest run-getter. His 86 on debut is the highest by an Indian cricketer in limited overs cricket. More recently, he has captained the India ‘A’ team and played crucial knocks in the Ranji Trophy that Karnataka won in 2013. What we are now witnessing is the second coming of Robin Uthappa - self assured, confident and not looking to smash every ball out of the field. There is now a sense of relative calm and purpose.

We congratulate Robin for believing in his abilities and achieving what many of us only dreamt of as our future. We wish him the very best in his endeavours and are confident that he will break new barriers.

CITATION FOR RECIPIENT OF THE OBA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – 2014

Rahul Sarpeshkar is a professor and scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he heads a research group on Analog Circuits and Biological Systems. His bioengineering group creates novel wet DNA-protein circuits in living cells and also advanced dry nano-electronic circuits on silicon chips.

His longstanding and pioneering work on analog and biological computation has helped create novel analog synthetic biology circuits and biological and bio-inspired supercomputers based on analog computation in cells. In addition, he has invented ultra-energy-efficient and energy-harvesting systems like glucose-powered neural prosthetics; and ultra-low-power implantable medical devices such as cochlear implants or diagnostic devices.

In simple, layman terms, Rahul’s research is based on the fact that the human body is an extremely energy-efficient system. He has been able to use the principles of energy consumption in the human cell and apply them to electronic inventions. This could include implants for the deaf, blind, paralyzed and cardiac patients where you need an electronic system to survive on an implanted battery in the human body for 30 years or it could be a broadband radio chip that could enable an ultra-fast low-power cell phone by using the principles of how the human ear functions. His work has applications in areas as wide as medicine, biotechnology, bioelectronics and even energy-efficient cars – in fact, anything that needs to work for long periods of time with a limited energy supply.

The 1984 batch had star performers academically. Amongst them was one who stood tall - Rahul Sarpeshkar. A short-statured student with explosive knowledge, he was second to none and was admired by our school clergy and teachers for his knowledge, oratory skills and anything cerebral. It was a foregone conclusion that the OBA gold medal was his and he did not disappoint.

In the 4th standard, while the rest of his batch was still reading Enid Blyton, Rahul had finished the entire Hardy Boys collection. In high school, Rahul would spend his lunch breaks sitting in the library poring over encyclopedias and reference books. Every so often, he would be pulled out to explain a difficult mathematics or physics concept that students needed help in understanding. With all his brilliance, Rahul had the uncanny ability to simplify and explain a complex problem in order to make it comprehensible to the rest of us. There was one occasion when the class asked the teacher to stop the lecture and let Rahul take over. The teacher was only too relieved to oblige. Rahul always seemed to have full knowledge of a topic well before it was covered in class.

Rahul’s brilliance did not end in the classroom. He was an eloquent orator and would inevitably win every debating competition. In addition to his outstanding delivery, it was the facts that he put forward to bolster his case that were very hard to dispute. Note that this was well before the days of the Internet and the only source of information were books.

When in the 12th standard, Rahul was accepted into a number of the top colleges in the USA with full scholarships, including MIT, which he decided to accept. Nonetheless, after making this decision, Rahul still chose to write the IIT entrance exam. When asked why, his answer was “just for the fun of it”. He ended up getting the 7th place in all of India.

Rahul went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics from MIT and a Ph.D. from CalTech. He then became a member of the technical staff of Bell Labs’ division of biological computation before eventually joining the faculty of MIT.

A EULOgY TO FR. RONNIE PRABHU

I first ran into him at the interview. Where he asked me no questions, except to ask me to read out Frost’s Mending Wall

during a lull in the proceedings. I did. He smiled.

He had smiled like that once before. When I entered the room, slightly nervous because I had turned up in jeans, and

one of the two kurtas which were then my entire wardrobe. All the other interviewees had turned up in formal clothes,

many of them in neckties, one in a suit, and one in a rather resplendent Conjeevaram. The smile went all the way into

his eyes, and into the crinkles that sped sideways from there, and into the rims of his spectacles. All in all, the surprise

wattage of a studio lamp, when you go in wanting only passport-size. The smile was all warmth, and perhaps some

instinctive understanding of what was playing in my head the first time. I don’t know what it meant the second time.

I met him two weeks later, after a beautifully slow beginning to my career as college teacher, comprising four lectures a

week. This was some staff orientation, and I got there ten minutes early. Yes, yes, I was young then and capable of such

things. He was already there, and he was pacing in leisurely fashion towards the treetops that framed the corridor-end

in the PU Block. He smiled again, and said hello. He remembered my name, and said it with more affection than I had

heard in a long time. He was wearing a rather superb cream kurta.

I was quite nervous, because everybody in the teaching circuit had stories about this college. About the huge PU classes.

About the irrepressible Degree students, and what they could get up to. Some unfortunate Esther had once said last

bench getout after a torrid half-hour, and had been rewarded with the sight of a ceremonial removal of the said item of

furniture. Following which the five gents returned to park themselves on the desk while the rest of the class applauded

their social conscience. There was also the story of the man who had risked the phrase irresponsible fellows. He received

what you might call a visual-tactile tribute; an airborne idli that arced across the room and landed on his forehead. The

story of unfortunate newbies who strutted across the aisles and went home to find out the backs of their spotless white

shirts crisscrossed by non-Rorschach splashes of ink. About the English lecturer who was interrupted amid notes-giving

by an explosion--a device of great precision featuring an agarbatti and a green-wound hydrogen-bomb from Sivakasi.

And I was a weedy, nervous, easily embarrassed young feller with nothing remotely professorial about me to recommend

my case to such lords of life.

At the orientation, he began by talking about the first class he took while still a scholastic. In fifteen minutes, nobody

was listening to him, and they gave him hell regularly for a week after. A senior priest had passed by his class once,

and everybody shut up. The man later said to him, pitch your class slightly above their heads, and don’t smile so much.

Because when you stop smiling, you look like you are stuck, and they seem to enjoy making that happen. It seemed to

work, he said. I don’t know if it will for you. That was possibly the first time I heard an entire room relax. And then

everybody began asking him questions, and telling their stories.

He listened patiently. And said something only when all the fifteen new teachers in the room had finished. Enforce your

rules consistently. And don’t make too many rules, because then you won’t have the time to do anything but enforce.

Imagine the student, he said. Poor fellow. In the first hour, he has to jump to remember Teacher X’s rules. And then

jump again and remember Teacher Y’s rules. Also, don’t be afraid to have conversations with students. Know their

stories, because they might want you to listen. Especially because nobody in our world takes adolescents seriously. Your

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 93

rules shouldn’t become hoops that they have to jump through, because then they will give up on conversation. Students

tell me all kinds of things. I had to learn not to judge, but to listen, he said.

I didn’t notice how time flew that day. It was a bunch of conversations, not a pep-talk, nor expertise display. I’ve sat

through dozens of orientations by other people, and none of them had the simple gift of making conversation happen,

or freeing you from having to look at your watch.

I remember every minute of that day. The stories he told us. And how he chose not to attire himself in his authority as

Rector of the college, but to return to where we were, and to begin from there with us. That day’s exchanges went simply

and painlessly into my own practice. I don’t think I will forget his bit about it being simpler to make rules for oneself, and

to make as few rules as possible for others.

I think that day was one of the three reasons for my choosing to stay on in college. The other two reasons were named

Eugene Lobo and Clarence D’Souza. I had never before met priests I could respect, and here, suddenly, were men of

great ability, and no hankering after the trappings of authority. Those were great times in which to begin.

I met him about a dozen times after that. And he always had the time for conversation. The last time we met, he was old,

tired, and a little bit shrunken by exhaustion. I had expanded to about two-and-a-half times my original size, and I had

extra foliage. He looked at me, puzzled a little bit by the shrubbery, and then his eyes lit up again, and he pronounced my

name like he had that first time, in a voice that was an extension of that smile, that warmth.

Institutions around us nowadays need booster doses of the kind of good sense he was capable of. Goodbye, Fr. Ronnie

Prabhu. They don’t make Jesuits like you anymore.

THE OBA TEACHER KAIZEN PROgRAMME

Teachers make an institution. A venerable institution like St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School with 3,300 students on roll, present several challenges to teachers, least of all being the high expectations set by parents, management, old boys and the students themselves. Our school is not one to rest on its laurels of 158 years. The school evolves, each year, resetting goals and targets, and, consequently, expectations as well.

Teachers are no longer just teaching subjects and preparing students for examinations. They are involved with students as their mentors, friends, critics, and caregivers. Teachers, in addition to all these activities are also involved as administrators of their classes. Technology is changing now, even as we red this. Students are aware of these changes and adapt much faster than teachers do. It is, therefore, no longer feasible for a teacher to enter a classroom under the assumption that students do not know the subject. Students have unlimited resources and methods of learning off the internet.

The restrictions placed on teachers from these expectations, as well as those placed by the compulsions of the examinations by the ICSE board; compel teachers to adopt what students are apt to define as “boring” methods of teaching.

The teacher must evolve. The question is, if teachers have been teaching subjects in a particular way for decades, and have, more or less, succeeded, then what is this evolution that one expects from them, and, more importantly, how does one enable such evolution?

Fr. Clifford Sequeira, Principal of the school, approached the OBA with this and other related problems facing the school and its teachers.

The OBA, after a great deal of thought, and several rounds of discussions with management and teachers, put together a set of six sessions and called it The OBA Teacher Kaizen Programme. “Kaizen” is the Japanese word for continuous improvement. It is not aimed at teaching Kaizen principles in themselves, but, rather, to use kaizen principles to develop and deliver the programme. It is not meant to be a training programme in the classical sense of the word; it is a set of highly interactive and intensely participatory sessions meant to tickle the creative senses of teachers and to encourage them to clearly enunciate the challenges they face and equip them to look for solutions on their own.

The teachers, on their part, were, understandably, wary of participating. Keeping in mind that most of the teachers in the first pilot batch have more than 20 years’ experience each – much of that experience in our school, we approached the development of the sessions a little off the beaten path.

Each session began with a game that teachers could replicate in their classrooms and involve the children as well. These games were developed specifically for the programme by the OBA Kaizen Team and are very interactive. The advantage with these games is that they can be used for any subject being taught and become all the more interesting and great fun when used while teaching Indian languages. The main sessions were aimed at opening the minds of teachers. Their minds, being conditioned to teaching in an “acceptable’ manner, are the only thing that comes in the way of trying new methods. Each module of the six sessions were planned to tap their inert creative senses and let them free to think without hindrance. They were given situations or problems to solve, allowing them to use “design thinking” to at first, formulate the challenge or problem clearly and focus on the distilled statement, thereby allowing them to come up with several possible solutions.

Teachers showed more creativity than they gave themselves credit for. It is clear that everyone is creative at some level or the other. It is only the lack of opportunity and the pressures of circumstance that prevent them from unleashing it on their students. The feedback from teachers is very encouraging and they are looking forward to participation at the next level.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 95

The teachers were happy to be led by old boys as they knew that the programme was being conducted with no profit motives at all. They were also pleased to get a break from the usual corporate kind of trainers, of whom they have had enough.

The OBA’s Kaizen Team of Gopal Bengeri (1976), A.G. Krishnaswamy (1972 ISC), Siddharth Raja (1990) and Umakanth Alva (1988) is now getting ready for its Second Pilot OBA Teacher Kaizen Programme slated to begin sometime in October 2015.

The Programme was launched on July 6, 2015, culminating on August 14, 2015. All session were held after class hours from 3pm to 5 pm, once a week.

The Kaizen Team would like to place on record its gratitude to fr. Priincipal, Mrs. Miriam Angelo (Vice Principal), the non-teaching staff – Praveen and Sundar for all their cooperation throughout the duration of the programme.

And to the teachers who participated after hours, despite commitments at home, and in school, the following day of each session, we would like to say that it was a fabulous, revealing and a great learning experience for us!

sJBHs OBA CONNECT – Coorg 2014

November 2014, saw the convergence of around 50 old boys at the Polibetta Club, Pollibetta, Coorg, for the Coorg Connect 2014 event. Several of the old boys had even arrived a few days before the event to enjoy the sa-lubrious weather there, at that time of the year.

In response to my plea during the 2014 AGM, for better attendance at the Connect Events, there were quite a few “first timers” at Coorg.

The event started with a formal meeting of the Coorg chapter’s Managing Committee with Ashok Chengappa (Subbaiah) (1975) – President; C.C. Thimmaiah (1984) Vice President; P. Ajith Bopanna (1975) Secretary; and Joseph Cherian (1975) Treasurer.

After observing a one-minute silence in memory of deceased old boys, all old boys present sang the school song with enthusiasm.

Vice President, C.C. Thimmaiah (or, just “CC”, as he is better known), welcomed the gathering of about 70 per-sons including spouses and families, and invited more Coorg old boys to play an active role in the Coorg chapter.

Young achiever, golfer, and old boy Varun was the Guest of Honour at the event. He spoke of how the school’s management allowed him to pursue his goals in golf and to catch up with his academics later. That, he said was the most wonderful things about St. Joseph’s. The focus is not only on academics, but an overall development.

Gopal Bengeri, President OBA, then addressed the gathering. He recounted the efforts of the OBA in providing students scholarship; the teacher’s insurance fund and elaborated the schemes that the OBA had initiated and called for everyone’s support.

The new committee was elected – essentially the existing committee continued to administer the Coorg chapter. P. Ajith Bopanna then proposed a vote of thanks.

The meeting adjourned to the dance floor, where the band “Jukebox” from Goa played, sang and took requests from the crowd. The dinner was a traditional Coorg spread with all the trappings and everyone loved it. It was an evening well spent and worth attending again!

sJBHs OBA CONNECT – goa 2015

OBA Connect, Goa was held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Chalston Beach Resort, Baga, Goa. This was the 6th edition of Goa Connect, and was attended by 26 Old Boys from Bangalore, Kerala, Goa, Coorg, and Mumbai. The AGM of the Goa Chapter was held in the morning and the following old boys were elected as office bearers for 2015 – 16: President – Michael Rozalla(1956); Vice President – Fulgence Rorigues(1955); Secretary – Lloyd Macedo (1974) and Treasurer - Hubert Saldhana (1977).

The afternoon kicked off with assembled old boys singing the school song with Rahul Tadimalla (Toddy) on the keyboard. Lloyd Macedo welcomed the gathering.

Gopal Bengeri, President of the OBA, congratulated the Goa Chapter on organizing yet another wonderful get together and wished them well, hoping there would be better attendance in the following year.

These present were treated to an excellent Bharat Natyam performance and followed by a variety of retro music. Toddy was in his element and sang his heart out for the old boys.

Lunch, as usual, was a grand affair with a generous spread of typical Goan fare, from soup to nuts. As always, the Chalston Resort, extended professional hospitality to all of us and we all had a good time, looking forward to the next Goa Connect event.

Several old boys suggested that if the event were to be held at a different time of the year, say, February, the attendance was sure to improve.

The effort put in by the Goa Chapter to make this event a success, was very obvious.

The OBA places on record their appreciation to the Goa Chapter for their hospitality and warmth during the event.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 109

Proud are we to be alumni of St Joseph’s,And for this we are all thankful to the founding father St. Ignatius,It is because of the Brothers and Fathers Jesuit,Every alumnus is an outstanding graduate.

Many a student can wield a bat or a hockey stick,And even bowl or kick a hat trick,All the students are smart and fantastic,Belong either to St Andrew’s, St David’s, St. George’s or St. Patrick’s.

On Museum Road is this great school,Where every student and pupil as a rule,Emerges as a person not only whole and full,But also with an outlook ecumenical.

Hats off to the great teachers of this elite school,Where every alumnus is not only unique and cool,But also very faithful and fiercely loyal,To its motto ‘Faith and Toil’.

An Ode to My First Teacher in My New school

My first teacher in my new school was Mrs. Lynette Lobo,She was the aunt of my classmate Ricardo,Thanks to her otherwise I may have become a bozo or hobo,Or even a big zero.

She was kind and even keel,And she knew how each boy did feel,She knew it was no point being harsh or cold like steel,Because she had sons of her own named Warren and Neil.

She knew that for each of us it was a difficult transition,And therefore avoided being a strict disciplinarian,She simply wanted us to enjoy our education,Even if we were from backgrounds proletarian.

She taught at St. Joseph’s on Museum Road,And made sure we did not overburden ourselves with a high load,Thanks to her kind and gracious teaching style and mode,We are all now following the high road.

An Ode to our Math Teacher

Our math teacher was the one and only Mr. Hartwell Yates,We all wondered how mentally he solves and calculates,To solving math problems he was true and passionate,And to have him as a teacher we were indeed fortunate.

He would teach math with great vigor,

An Ode to Our Alma Mater

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015110

And in great detail and extraordinary rigor,But up and down the long school corridor,He would walk like an absent-minded professor.

While Swinging Clubs he made us all to co-ordinate,And in geometry he taught us X and Y co-ordinates,His voice and accent many a kid liked to imitate,And his gentle personality impersonate.

With all the pupils he was a great hit,Because of his mild manner and ready wit,All the pupils were mesmerized by this teacher perfect,Papa Yates is how we all referred to him with fondness and great respect.

An Ode to our Principal

Our principal was Fr. Hedwig, He was the boss of school big-wigs,He was the indeed the big chief,And he certainly did tolerate the boys’ mischief.

Up went every school kid’s adrenaline,When they saw the cane he used to discipline,When the mischief-maker was caught, without a doubt he was toast,And the parents were summoned for a solid roast.

He was an outstanding English teacher,From him we learnt Norah Burke, Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare,He made it very simple and easy,For us to understand the meaning of concepts such as ‘Quality of Mercy’.

Thanks to Fr. Hedwig Da Costa,The school coffers increased like a bonanza,And the students better understand poetry, verse and stanza,Only once you graduate the kids get to know that he is indeed a fine, fine fella.

An Ode to Our geography Teacher

The name of our Geography teacher was Mr. Luke,The fact that he was a great teacher was no fluke,When provoked, his temper flared up like a nuke,And he responded with a gruff rebuke.

He taught us figure running and latitude,And also longitude,When you did well he was reluctant to give you platitudes,But he was not hesitant to slap your head when you had a bad attitude.

He felt that is important to know about stalagmites,And stalactites,About underground pillars made of calcite,To be a complete Josephite.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015 111

He taught us about crescentic sand dunes and the Savanna,And ox-bow lakes in Havana,About the great earthquakes in Lisbon, Tokyo and Yokohama,Despite the fissures, faults and tremors we all respected Mr. Luke D’Souza.

An Ode to our High school Math and Physics Teacher

We had a high school teacher whose name was Mr. John Pinto,Always immaculately dressed like the movie star Django,When he shook his head, he moved his whole upper body,The students nicknamed him Noddy.

He took fifty boys on excursion to the hills of Ooty and Chamundi,To Madurai to see the Temple Meenaskhi,To see the bison and elephants at the game sanctuary in Thekadi,Breath taking was God’s Own Country.

We saw scenic rubber estates near Kottayam,The capital Trivandrum and the beautiful beaches of Kovalam,We saw the placid backwaters of Cochin,And Vivekananda Memorial in Cape Comorin.

He taught us Physics and Maths,And the importance of exploring new places and paths,We are grateful to him for his energy unbounded,To make us all rounded.

An Ode to our Chemistry and Biology Teacher

We had a teacher whose name was Mr. David Chatterjee,He taught us high-school Chemistry,And Biology,Including Botany and Zoology.

When a mischievous student caused disarray,He would express with dismay ‘I say’,If the student was crass or behaved like an ass,Red-faced, he would bellow ‘ I say, get out of my class’.

He was passionate about Chemistry,And spent all day in the underground laboratory,During his lectures he was full of energy,And we all admired this prodigy.

We are grateful for him for laying the strong foundation,For many an Old Boy to pursue the healing vocations,Of clinical medicine,Or that of a veterinarian.

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015112

An Ode to Our History Teacher

Our history teacher was Mr. Hanumantha Rao,He chuckled when the mischievous boys tried to gherao,He taught us about the rule of the Mughal kings Humayun and Zair-ud-din Babur,And about greatness of Ashoka and Akbar.

He knew we were more interested in reading racy comics,Rather than learning History or Civics,He was a teacher who was easy going,As a result he had a big following.

He also taught us Kannada,But in the exam many of us still scored a big ‘nada’,He walked up and down the school corridors and verandah,Grinning affectionately like a giant panda.

He was fun-loving and jovial,He even borrowed our comics and novels,We are grateful to him because he taught us life lesson quintessential,That from time-to-time it is important to lighten up a little.

gIVINg BACK TO sCHOOL…

Memories of school always evoke sweet nostalgia for me - as it does with all our Josephites. Today, I had come to school

along with Dr Rajalaxmi and the team from Srishtilife. I had the good fortune of spending time with my juniors and it

was nice to see hundreds of boys smartly attired in uniform just like the good old days –the difference though was that

I was not one of the boys in uniform – how I miss those cherished days.

We are indeed blessed with the benefits and convenience that modern civilization has to offer. Unfortunately there is

also the flip side; one of the biggest banes we are seeing today is increase in the incidents of child sex abuse. This is a

cause for concern and something we all have to collectively address.

A subject like child sex abuse in a conservative society like India’s requires one to be extremely sensitive and yet drive

home the point – something that Dr. Rajalaxmi can do with great ease. Dr. Rajalaxmi (Raji as she prefers being called to

break down the formal barriers when communicating with her) is someone who has dedicated her life to address this

complex and difficult area with missionary zeal. She is a person for whom the work is like prayer as her final journey of

life. Raji is a medical doctor (sexologist & gynecologist), who has been working with children for a decade. Mentoring

children to realize their full potential is her passion. She has travelled far and wide across the length and breadth of

the country interacting and speaking to children, parents and teachers and also worked with several state governments

to train teaching staff at government schools. Srishtilife has also covered twenty four lakh children across the social

spectrum in a short period of time since its inception.

Raji during the course of her work has found that child sex abuse can be curtailed drastically if the children, parents,

teachers and other well-wishers of the children are better equipped, well informed and have no communication barriers

with the child. In most instances, abuse does not happen overnight but after an incubation period. It is also not something

that happens from strangers but by people known to the child. There are ominous signs that if you just look out for can

prevent a young life going awry.

Me being in Srishtilife was simply because of Raji and her deep commitment to the cause. Srishtilife has the concept of

“Have you gone back to your school?”. Being an Old Boy, I was keen to have Raji come to St Joseph’s. Today this was

fructified and she had a session at school with the children of fifth, sixth, seventh and eight standards.

The programme started off with responsibility and then smoothly merged into responsibility with regards to child sex

abuse. I realized for myself how very critical it is to be responsible to the word child sex abuse. How responsibility can

be inculcated and imbibed in young minds and how we miss out on this crucial aspect – and yet how simple it can be if

we just make the effort. All the time we hear the word good touch and bad touch and it can get a tad confusing beyond

a point. Raji spoke about the brain and the impact of emotions on the intellect - it was a whole new refreshing approach

to addressing a feared topic. The teaching was done in an objective manner and was not subjective. Then there were

skits that were held by the team of Srishtilife to convey some of the key messages along with the five points of safety -

ensuring the Josephites felt connected and were learning with fun.

The programme concluded with the children giving a promise for being responsible - first to themselves and later as the

powerful future of our nation. At the end of the programme, Raji and team got a standing applause.

A TALE OF TWO sCHOOLs

ONE CITY … AND A LOT IN COMMON?

Bishop Cotton Boys’ School celebrated its sesquicentenary this year; seven years after our school’s 150th anniversary of

its founding. Traditional rivals you may say, for several decades. But, in this city of ours, Bangalore, these two “grand

monoliths, colonial cousins if you will” (as Aditya Sondhi, Old Cottonian, writes in the first article below), have come

to embody the best of what we, as a society, represent – each in their own respective activities and giving back to their

respective schools.

This editor was approached by Aditya to pen a piece for the anthology that the Old Cottonians’ Association (OCA)

were putting together for their school’s momentous anniversary. That article – with inputs and materials from Col.

Chris Rego (Class of 1976) – and written with a sense of history, places the intense rivalry between these two hoary

Bangalore institutions in its traditional and historical settings; as well as seeks to draw on the common threads underlying

our alma mater and Aditya’s. The article entitled “The View from Down the Road” was carried in “Pucca Sahibs”, the

Sesquicentennial Journal of the OCA 2015, under the heading “The Rival Sahibs” – although, if as this article references

Bishop Cottons as the rival school “down-the-road”, then technically the article should have been entitled “The View

From UP the Road” – another bone of contention one may say between these never ending rivals! “The View from

Down the Road” is reprinted here after Aditya Sondhi’s article, with the permission of the Old Cottonians’ Association.

We now return the compliment and carry in our OBA Calling and Annual Report 2014-15 – the first article below – this

short piece written by Aditya Sondhi entitled “2014-15: A Year in Retrospect for the Old Rival”. As Aditya writes: “[ours

is an] over 300 combined years of a priceless history of Bangalore.” A history worth telling in juxtaposition!

I did feel a sense of pride that I could contribute in some small measure towards my fellow young Josephites and have Raji

address them on responsibility. Responsibility is such a powerful answer for the children and for every human being.

It is heartening to see people like Raji stay so deeply committed to a cause and be a support for several children, teachers

and parents. With changing times parents need to change and speak to their wards about the need for safety of their

body. Most parents desist from any talk around sexuality and this is the reason the child is unable to address his concerns

and sometimes gets information that is incorrectly ingrained in his psyche from dubious sources. Communication

between parents/teachers and the child must be open and the child must feel comfortable with his parents/teachers and

look upon them as his best friends. This will go a long way to ensure that the child has adequate psychological support

and can always tell his well-wishers what is happening in his life so that remedial steps can be taken well in advance if

anyone is prying on the child’s vulnerability, rather than deal with a difficult aftermath.

Thanks to Rev. Fr. Clifford Sequeira, Mrs. Angelo and the OBA for facilitating this programme and to Raji for taking the

take time off from her busy schedule to come and address our Josephites.

2014-15: A YEAR IN RETROsPECT FOR THE OLD RIVAL

Bernard Shaw was his usual mischievous self when said “Reminiscences make you feel so deliciously aged and sad.”

The Old Cottonians’ Association took a cue and tried to avoid plain nostalgia in celebrating the sesquicentennial year

of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, and instead, tried to pepper the year with meaningful fellowship in a spirit of tribute.

The year was kicked off in September 2014 with high-tea for the old teachers of Cottons at Koshy’s. They were each

presented the OCA’s memento – a Paul Fernandes print done specially for “150 Years of Green and Gold”. Paul being

a Josephite was most gracious in drawing the rival school, evoking his customary joie de vivre.

Come October, a cricket match was held in the memory of Pankaj Sadhu (1994), a talented cricketer who passed

away young. The game saw two full-strength sides of old boys, facing off at the BEL grounds. An inter-school cricket

tournament was also held at RSI towards the end of the year, with debutants Bethany being crowned winners.

A felicitation followed for Philip Wollen (1967) – a winner of the OCA’s Eminent Old Cottonian Award for 2014. An

Order of Australia for his work against animal cruelty, a special vegan fare was on offer for him and all guests. Around

this time, the OCA also introduced the first of its “Heritage Walks”, with historian Meera Iyer taking her group around

the boys’ and girls’ schools, and other connected landmarks close by, such as the St. Mark’s Cathedral, Koshy’s and

Konark. (Cash Pharmacy was missed.)

November saw Lt Gen K Surendranath (1970) deliver the tenth Gen K S Thimayya Memorial lecture, bringing to the

fore the rich military tradition of Cottons. By December, several rounds of auditions were completed for what was to

be the piece de resistance of the celebrations, the OC play. Theatre-person Preetam Koilpillai (1990) went on to direct

Yasmina Reza’s “Art”, featuring Kartik Ganapathy (1991), Abhijit Madhwaraj (2001) and Chris Avinash (1992). The play

was staged over four shows in June 2015 at Jagriti Theatre and was received with gusto. For good measure, the script was

mildly tweaked to make a witty jibe at our old rivals!

I had the personal privilege of bringing out my book The Order of the Crest (Penguin, India) in January 2015 as a tribute

to the old school on its 150th. That it was launched by my English teacher Mrs Hilda Peacock, former principal of La

Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata, made it doubly sweet.

June-end (which is when we celebrate St. Peter’s Tide and Old Cottonians’ Day) also witnessed several batch reunions,

including a boisterous golden jubilee of the centenary batch of 1965. The official bash was a twin-event – one for

the younger OCs featuring a rock band and a DJ, and another - the Green and Gold Ball - for the older folks with

Jagan Chandy’s retro band in attendance. This dinner saw a convergence of alumni from across the globe and a very

high degree of camaraderie. Ajit Varki (1967) received the Eminent Cottonian Award and reminded the guests of his

watchword, “Whatever thy doest, do it with thy might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). That Sunday morning, a marathon was run

from Balabrooie Guest House (where Cottons began in 1865) to the school, where a sumptuous breakfast awaited the

athletes.

During the year, the OCA thoroughly enjoyed putting together a journal called Pucca Sahibs with anecdotal pieces

contributed by old boys from the batch of 1938 to the most recent batch of 2015. We were delighted that we could carry

a piece “The View from Down the Road” by Siddharth Raja, sharing a Josephite’s perspective of Cottons. It carried

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015116

rich anecdotes, for which Colonel Chris Rego (OJ) must be heartily thanked. Old rivalries apart, Cottons and Joseph’s

are two grand monoliths, colonial cousins if you will, with over 300 combined years of a priceless history of Bangalore.

It is very uplifting that the old boys’ associations of the two schools are striving exceptionally to keep this legacy going,

driven by their pithy school mottos.

Floreat.

Aditya Sondhi(Old Cottonian)

Dr. Aditya Sondhi is a designated Senior Advocate at the Karnataka High Court. A Ph.D. in Political Science from Mysore University;

and an alumnus of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Aditya is a passionate “Old Cottonian” having authored a

book “The Order of the Crest: Tracing the Alumni of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, Bangalore (1865 - 2015)” to coincide with his alma

mater’s 150th anniversary. When not arguing in court; or holding his school motto aloft, Aditya would enjoy sipping a drink while watching

some old-fashioned test cricket!”

THE VIEW FROM DOWN THE ROAD

I am a “dyed-in-the wool” Josephite; and so is Christopher Rego – Chris, from the batch of 1976 of St. Joseph’s Boys’

High School, is senior to me by 14 years. Both of us unabashedly acknowledge that we owe all of what we are today to

that hallowed institution, a foundational and inspirational rock on which several young men in Bangalore have built their

lives and their life’s mission. So, when Aditya Sondhi – from the great rival school “down-the-road”; that school “which-

is-not-to-be-mentioned” but which can lay equal claim to such a legacy – approached us to write a short article on the

rivalry between Bishop Cotton Boys’ School and our alma mater for an anthology to commemorate Bishop Cotton’s

sesquicentennial this year, I instantly remembered it was Aditya who had graciously written about his school’s “friendly

rival” (oxymoronic) when St. Joseph’s celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008. Images of several renowned school and

college rivalries came flooding into my mind – Eton vs. Harrow (something that Aditya had, indeed, adverted to in his

article); Oxford vs. Cambridge; Harvard vs. Yale or Stanford; and, closer home, St. Stephen’s vs. Hindu College.

Apart from these obvious references, I was clearly now struggling for some context to write the article requested; one

befitting the occasion of the old rival’s sesquicentenary and, daresay, in the best spirit of the old rivalry between our

two schools, without missing a step for my own alma mater! Guidance, however, was on hand – please write a piece

which is “light and anecdotal, with a touch of history that I know both of you relish” said Aditya. Chris, the author of a

seminal work tracing the history of St. Joseph’s (“Faith & Toil : 1858 to 2008”) extracted for and shared with me without

hesitation (thank you, Chris) information on this old school rivalry from his reams of painstaking research. So, it fell to

me to piece together a story, drawing almost entirely from Chris’s inputs, weaving my narrative through the threads of

these anecdotes and the strands of the historical setting of Bangalore from the mid 19th century onwards. I end with

a forward-looking perspective.

Post the establishment of the British suzerainty over India at the turn of the 18th century and their “despatch” of Tipu,

Bangalore grew in prominence once the Cantonment was established in 1809. Bangalore’s early pinnacle was reached

under the period of direct British rule between 1831 and 1881, when the Wodeyar Maharaja was the mere titular head

of his Durbar in Mysore and the princely State was governed – directly from the Secretariat in Bangalore – by British

Commissioners, with Mark Cubbon and Lewin Bentham Bowring, being the most prominent. An increasing number

of Europeans and Anglo-Indians settled in the Cantonment, which developed into a township – the “Civil & Military

Station” – rivaling the “pettah” (or “native” fort area, which pre-dated it), in size. Unsurprisingly, the demand for good

schools increased and the first Catholic missionary schools came to be established – chief among them, St. Joseph’s

Seminary (in 1858), which later became, first, St. Joseph’s College (up to 1927); and, later, St. Joseph’s “European” High

School, before being renamed in 1968 to “St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School”. Two other major European schools were set

up soon after St. Joseph’s – Bishop Cottons in 1865 and Baldwins in 1878; both Protestant institutions.

Dressed in their Sunday best, the boarders of St. Joseph’s would, after Mass and breakfast, go for a walk around town

under the careful gaze of a priest. As noted in the “OBA Calling” of 1968 (the journal of the St. Joseph’s Old Boys’

Association):

“On these excursions, they often encountered similar processions of boys from rival Protestant schools [chiefly of]

Bishop Cottons…. – a good opportunity to hurl ribald epithets or cat calls or even throw stones in good fun! Of course,

they got as much as they gave.”

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015118

Thus, was born the old school rivalry between St. Joseph’s and Bishop Cottons – the genesis of which contest lay as much

in the Catholic-Protestant divide (overlaid on centuries-old class and caste divisions), as in the age-old phenomenon of

rowdy boys!

But, underlying all of this emerging rivalry was a certain, very British ethic – civility and good order; “gentlemanliness”!

It has been said (and oftentimes equally challenged) that when things start to get nasty, trust only the British to be fair!

There can be no doubt that in the early days of the 19th century right up to the early 20th century, premier schools

like these in Bangalore (and in other cantonment towns) were almost always the exclusive preserve of Europeans, with

Indians only making their way in around World War I. Nonetheless, this ethic of good order and fair spirit in ones acts

and deeds – regardless of its origin – has come to embody the legacy and contribution of both these institutions right

up to today – a heritage that is, and must proudly be, carried on and strengthened. Where else can this spirit be seen

more than on the sporting fields?

To generations of boys – Josephites and Cottonians equally – cricket has become synonymous with their school years;

with the most vivid memories often being the fiercely fought matches between our two schools. Honours were (and

continue to be) divided, with St. Joseph’s putting it across its rival in one year; with the compliment being repaid, in equal

measure, by Bishop Cottons in another. Every contest was (and is) invariably fought tooth-and-nail, with boys from the

rival camps egging their teams on from the sidelines. Every now and then, however, after a tough fight, honours were

shared. On 24th July 1961, a match between the teams ended in a tie with both schools scoring 80 runs. In that game,

Santosh Naidu, Vece Paes and Peter Rodericks bowled well for the Josephites, whereas D. Deviah did well with the bat;

St. Joseph’s won the Cottonian Shield in 1969 after a ten year drought.

Commenting on the friendly rivalry between St. Joseph’s and Bishop Cottons, Mr. Humayun Mirza, an eminent Old Boy

of St. Joseph’s, had this to say in a speech at the Centenary Sports of St. Joseph’s on 8th April 1958:

“No praise is too high for Bishop Cottons….I had rarely seen [a team] play a losing game which they had as much right

to expect to win, with such cheerfulness and such friendliness. This is a supreme test of character and I feel that I have

not the right to leave unrecorded here what redounds to the everlasting credit of Canon Elphick’s boys.”

An instance where the shoe was on the other foot occurred on the hockey field. During a closely fought hockey match,

a fracas broke out among the Cottonians and the Josephites, with teams and supporters alike joining in the melee in

the heat of the moment. It later transpired that a disputed goal which gave St. Joseph’s victory was actually illegal and

the referee had faulted in allowing it. The Cottonian hockey players were rightfully livid at losing to their perennial

adversaries and approached their Principal to ask him to contest the award of the trophy to St. Joseph’s. The Principal

of Cottons however took the laudable step of declining to rake-up the matter on the basis that true sportsmanship was

not about winning, but about taking the smooth with the rough and in accepting the referee’s decision taken in good

faith. That laid the matter to rest. And, it only remained for the boys of St. Joseph’s, involved in the “good fight”, to be

hauled across the coals during assembly the next morning, labeled “immature savages” and “overgrown hulks” before

being put under the cane. Now, I am sure all of that sounds familiar in both camps!

As India emerged from its colonial past, the ethos of both schools built-up over several decades were clear for all to

see, illustrated in microcosm by these incidents – inspirational themes calling upon both Cottonians and Josephites to

wage the good fight, but always keep one’s wits about oneself and one’s head held high. There can, I believe, be no

better endorsement, or a truer reflection of what both our alma maters stand for and for which we are each, respectively

and for each other, genuinely proud. A thread runs silently through this theme on both sides of the rivalry: eloquently

demonstrated in the personage of one of St. Joseph’s finest Principals, Fr. E. J. Jacques – “Good, better, best; never let

it rest, Till your good is better, and your better, best.”

The spirit of camaraderie and fellowship is another theme intrinsic to both schools and their interactions with each other.

In 1910, just a couple of years after its founding by Robert Baden-Powell, separate Boys Scout troops were formed at

Bishop Cottons and St. Joseph’s and named the 1st and 2nd Bangalore Troops, respectively. The 2nd Bangalore Troop

at St. Joseph’s had a chequered initial decade of its existence and had to be reconstituted in 1921. In an elaborate

ceremony at St. Joseph’s, forty boys who had passed the tenderfoot examination were sworn into the “brotherhood”

of the Scouts. Boys of the 1st Bangalore Troop of Bishop Cottons marched in with their colours to support their new

brethren; in an impressive initiation ceremony performed by District Scoutmaster Major Pakenham-Walsh who also lead

the Cottons Scouts.

Old boys of both schools have often met to celebrate their common heritage of great schools and having been brought-

up with stellar values and ethics. At several of these gatherings of old boys from both schools – including the joint

staging of Blue and Gold Balls – the highlight was a cricket match between the two teams, followed by competitions

like “egg-catching” and “3 legged races”. On one occasion, there was even a Tug-of-War between Bishop Cottons and

Sacred Hearts! The “OBA Calling” of 1992 includes this joke:

“Hear that an Old Cottonian from Hind Levers;Approached a Good Shepherd Fraulein and said;

‘Gimme your PALM OLIVE’, to which she said;

‘Not in your LIFE, BOY !’;

‘They are meant for the “JoSOAPites!”’

As we stand on the cusp of what many are calling “India’s century”, the abiding tale emerging from the historic old

rivalry between St. Joseph’s and Bishop Cottons is a shared sense of truth, of civility, of hard work, of good order and

fairness, of camaraderie, of honour, of virtue and, ultimately, of good citizenship of, and to, this nation of ours. Built

on decades of competition, each of our sights must be firmly set on building in each of our alumni, regardless of class,

creed, caste, race, religion (or avowed non-believers), gender or sexual orientation, the ethos of our schools’ respective

mottos: “Fide et Labore” – Faith and Toil; and “Nec Dextrorsum, Nec Sinistrorsum” – neither to the Right, nor to the

Left; for the better good and glory of India.

As if to underline this theme of collaboration between these two great though rival, institutions, a noble effort to build

village schools (and champion social change) in Manipur spearheaded by Chris Rego – including hostel accommodation

and a nutrition scheme – has seen alumni of both schools join hands for a common cause. What better way to celebrate

our shared concerns than to work together without reference to which school we each attended; as our respective

heritage emphasizes the same abiding ethic – to borrow a phrase – of malice toward none and with charity for all?

Writing in 2008 of St. Joseph’s, Chris Rego in his book said:

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015120

“In the Sesquicentennial year of the school, its stakeholders look back in awe at the metamorphosis of the institution,

slowly and surely, with every passing year, its growth not merely in brick and mortar but in character, competence and

compassion.”

These are words equally true of Bishop Cottons. We join countless of our Old Boys at St. Joseph’s, and, indeed, its

students, teachers and all its stakeholders, in warmly congratulating Bishop Cottons on completing its sesquicentennial;

and, indeed, to joining hands with us at St. Joseph’s, in jointly seeking to make the next 150 years more glorious to the

greatest benefit of all our young citizens, who pass through our portals.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

[Ed. Note: The 26th Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys’ Association of St. Joseph’s European High School, held on Sunday, 3rd

September 1944, corresponded with the Silver Jubilee year and celebrations of our O.B.A.

Founded on 7th September 1919, the O.B.A. celebrated its 25th anniversary under the baton of Mr. C. E. Noronha as its President (he

was to hold that post until 1945); and Mr. F. X. Paul as the Honorary Secretary (in his third year of a decade long stint as Secretary) –

all under the watchful gaze of the Honorary President of the Association, Rev. Fr. E. J. Jacques, S.J., the first Anglo-Indian principal of

the School (as the Silver Jubilee Souvenir notes), who was destined to serve two terms as Principal, totaling 11 years.

The O.B.A. Committee during the Silver Jubilee year produced a compact 37-page ‘Souvenir’, that was both part Annual Report and

Statement of Accounts – the Endowment Fund as at 31st August 1944 was Rs. 34,257 and 2 annas! – as well as a historical ‘look

back’ on the first 25 years of the Association.

Sprinkled with delightful anecdotes and wonderful recollections of each of the first twenty-five years of the O.B.A, its activities and

prominent personalities – including a description of Bill Fernandez as the ‘fidus Achates’ of the Association! a reference to the faithful

companion of Aeneas in Virgil’s Aeneid – the following are a small sampling of select extracts from that undoubtedly subdued ‘Souvenir’

published during war time. It makes mention of the ‘supreme sacrifice’ of ex-Josephites and places on record ‘our sincere sympathy’ with

every member of their bereaved families. These extracts from history speak so eloquently and ring true, even today!]

DEDICATION

This O.B.A. brochure is dedicated to the present Students of St. Joseph’s by the ‘Past’. Many of you boys will soon be

starting life in earnest, and if you are to make good, in the India of today, you must put forth the best that is in you, the

best that your School can give – ‘Faith and Toil’.

India is fast changing, and after the war an independent India will want you to prove yourselves as capable and valuable

as the Indian in brains, character and driving power. Stand up against the languor of the East; don’t let your life dissolve

into a vista of happy hours at clubs, cinemas, non-stop dances and similar allurements of city life in India. That way lies

degeneration and despair. The world has no use for the waster; it respects and rewards the worker who puts brains and

character into his work.

If this brochure inspires you with ‘Faith and Toil’ then it has rewarded the labours of its contributors.

FOREWORD

Twenty five years, it would seem, form but a brief span in the life of an Association. In this period, however, St. Joseph’s

O.B.A. can point to a proud record of achievements which are set forth in some detail in the accompanying brochure.

On reading it every Old Boy, I feel sure, will be inspired to rally around his Alma Mater and to give of his best so that

when the Golden Jubilee year comes around, it will be his privilege to have contributed to a still more glorious record.

We cannot rest on our laurels, numerous though they are. And for this reason. The times are full of anxiety and the

problems that face European education in this country are of vital concern to the members of the community. St.

Joseph’s, along with other schools of standing, has to play a significant part in the development of sound education. It

will never swerve from its high ideal. But it needs backing. It requires that the O.B.A. should be to it a true bulwark in

the storm and stress ahead. Its pupils of today look to their elder brothers for help and guidance and inspiration – and,

I am confident, they will not look in vain.

LOOKING BACK BY J. A. CRONING, I.S.O., M.B.E.

[Ed. Note: The Silver Jubilee Souvenir notes that Mr. Croning, Secretary to the Political Agent, Persian Gulf (an officer of the Imperial

civil administration), had only recently been conferred the I.S.O. (the ‘Imperial Service Order’ awarded on retirement for long and meritorious

service to the Empire) in the King’s Birthday Honours for 1943 – 44. This article appears as a recollection of his years at “the old school”

and in Bangalore, which he had ‘lately visited….after an absence of several years.”

What follows is an extract from the Souvenir of Mr. Croning’s reminiscences – of an age long since disappeared; of scenes almost in

cinemascope; of people and places mostly in memories; and of a writing style that’s as scintillating, as it is a thing of the past! Truly the history

of our school and its O.B.A. is intricately wound-up with Bangalore’s and its ‘cantonment’ colonial moorings, representing one facet of our

home town’s fascinating heritage.]

Curiously, one of the sayings I have been fond of repeating for years is ‘never look back’, but on this occasion I am glad

to depart from it, as doing so brings back many happy memories.

I joined St. Joseph’s in 1911, in the VII Standard, labouring under two strong disadvantages: I joined as late in the year

as September, and I knew no Latin. I naturally gravitated to the last bench, where I took a somewhat remote interest in

my studies, doing merely enough to avoid getting into serious trouble.

Father Bozon’s method of imparting Latin was, if no less effective, a little less kindly. We had to stand in turn about

a yard away from the side wall of the classroom and construe while his vigorous arm restlessly swung a supple cane

between the wall and one’s calf. At every mistake the cane swung through a wider arc and gave the calf a stinging cut.

Well, it certainly had results with me for in less than a year I could hold my own with all but a couple in the class.

I was a day-scholar all through, and my greatest friends were, naturally, day-scholars. ‘Manniken’ Kelly, Willie Foster and

I were a trio that moved up from the VII to the Intermediate, sharing tuck, troubles, triumphs and adventures….....We

were, however, so keen on hockey that we sought and obtained permission from the Secretary of the Bowring Institute

to use the hockey field in the Institute Ground. It proved to be the cradle of many an outstanding player – Kelly, Foster,

Hebert Littlewood, Bully Tremenheere, Gerry Brown, Claude Davenport, Keddy Homer, my brother Jim and a score

of others.

We often rode out on Saturday mornings to the Nilasandra quarry tanks for a swim. Our rendezvous was the gate of

Ashley Jones’ house on Norris Road. Ashley was the soul of unpunctuality. One morning, when we had gathered

noisily at the gate and shouted for him he popped his head, and with his hat on, over the half blind of his window and

replied ‘Be out in a minute, Chaps’. This quieted us and we let several minutes pass before we went round to his room,

where we found him still in his pyjamas, calmly eating heavily creamed toast. He had merely put his hat on before

replying to us. We nearly killed him as we hadn’t the slightest hope of curing him.

Then there was good old Fred Hunt. Fred’s people allowed him unlimited pocket money. He was not strong physically

and fellows were inclined to rag him. As he sat between Kelly and I in class, and both of us liked him, we constituted

ourselves his protectors. But, anticipating Al Capone, we had our price, thought it weighed lightly on Fred as he in turn

The Old Boys’ Association, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Bengaluru - Annual Report & OBA Calling 2014 - 2015124

liked us, and the tribute we levied scarcely strained his resources. It took two forms. First, I was more interested in

soccer, Kelly in hockey. Fred was our goalie at both games. For every goal that he let in at either game he had to give

each of us a 6” by 4” slab of Cadbury’s chocolate. This kept us passably well supplied. Next, when games failed, we

merely declared Richmond Town out of bounds to him. If he was caught there by either of us he had to pay road-cess

in the form of a similar slab of chocolate. As Fred had a strong attraction in Richmond Town, and his habits were

well known to us, it was seldom that he was able to evade us. In justification I must say that he enjoyed paying almost

as much as we did levying the blackmail. He was for ever pressing us to accept gifts which we used to refuse. The

chocolate was a different matter – it was business, and we felt no compunction.

I feel I have rambled along long enough, and must close with a tribute to the kindly preceptors of our days who did so

much for us, the Principals, Fathers Froger, Schmitt and Vanpeene, teachers like Fathers Cholet, Dutay and Mathevet,

Brothers Aloysius, Francis and Claudian, and Mr. E. Smith. It is with pleasure and gratitude that one always thinks of

them.
