The New Hope Ministry Team met one morning and I said that I did not know what I would write about in my Reflections article for the September newsletter. Cali Eck looked at me and said, “Write about England.”

On July 4th, Karrie and I flew to London. We were tourists for three days in London. The first day we saw the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, visited Westminster Abbey, and Methodist Central Hall in Westminster before sharing high tea and the musical Wicked. The next day we visited the Tower of London, ate delicious fish and chips and saw the musical Hamilton. On Sunday we worshipped at St. Paul’s Cathedral and then went to the British Museum.

On July 8th, we went by train to Salisbury England and joined a group of 38 Methodists pilgrims who shared the Wesleyan Spiritual Pilgrimage together. We stayed at Sarum College, which is in the Close of Salisbury Cathedral. Some of our experiences included:

* A trip to Oxford. John and Charles were educated at Lincoln College in Oxford University. It was at Oxford that the Holy Club was formed and John was a teaching fellow.

* A trip to Epworth, the hometown of John and Charles. We toured St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, where they were baptized. Included with this article is a picture of the rectory where they lived and Samuel Wes-ley’s tomb. In 1742, John Wesley stood on his father’s tomb and preached to the people after being banned from preaching in the church because Methodists were “too enthusiastic”.

* Worship at Sarum College, Salisbury Methodist Church, Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral, and Evensong at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

* Lunch at Methodist churches in Oxford and Epworth. Tea at the Wesley Rectory in Epworth and at Salis-bury Methodist Church.

* Visited ancient and amazing Stonehenge and Old Sarum where there are ruins of a castle and museum

* Visited the New Room in Bristol, which is the oldest Methodist building in the world. It now houses a museum that tells the story of John and Charles Wesley and 18th Century Methodism. It was in Bristol that John Wesley dared to preach outdoors for the first time.

* Visited the beautiful city of Bath. This is an old resort city, dating back to the days of the Roman Em-pire. We toured an ancient Roman spa that is spectacular. John Wesley preached here and laid the founda-tion stone for the Methodist Chapel in 1777.

* Toured the Foundry, which was the center of Methodist work in London. While Charles Wesley resided in Bristol, John Wesley resided in London. Wesley Chapel remains a house for Methodist worship and is home to a multicultural and multiracial congrega-tion. John Wesley is buried there and Susannah Wesley is buried across the street in Bunhill Fields Cemetery. John Bunyan, William Blake and Daniel Defoe are also buried there.

We heard lectures about Methodist history, beliefs, and spirituality from our four leaders and British Methodists. Our group was lead by four Methodist scholars: Steve Manskar, Alfred Day, Tom Albin, and Paul Chilcote. We flew back from England on July 18. This was a marvelous experience that offered opportunities for worship, spiritual growth, and learning about our Wesleyan roots. It also was a fun adventure in a beautiful setting. We are glad to be home, but it was something we will never forget!

Cali’s Corner

September is here! Are we ready for school and the routine that comes with it? I think there is something to be said for routine. It certainly helps me to accomplish tasks that should get done. This year as we journey in faith together, you will notice that there are classes and groups to attend and participate. Many of these classes and small group options are for all stages of the faith journey, for instance, in our women’s Bible studies, you can get as much out of it as you can. You can attend the class and discussion time only, or you can do all the homework and memory verses that are in addition to attending class. It is all dependent upon what you are comfortable doing and have time to do.

I am sharing our Discipleship system with you again so that you can determine where you are and what types of classes and involvement you wish to participate. Remember, we have defined a Disciple as “Someone who is intentional about following Jesus.” We strive to help you be intentional by nurturing and empowering you to make disciples as well. Our system is using the letters H.O.P.E. to guide us as we put in place ministries that help us accomplish our mission to make disciple by “building loving relationships through the HOPE that is in Jesus Christ.”

H - Hospitality O - Offer Christ P - Purpose E - Engagement

The classes and ministries will have a letter beside it as an indicator to show what part of the system you are engaging in. There can be more than one letter for any given ministry or class.

This is the rectory where John and Charles Wesley grew up after the original rectory was destroyed in a fire and the grave of their father, Samuel Wesley.

John Wesley stood on top of his father’s tomb and preached a sermon.

Second Saturday continues to have a need for hotel size toiletry items. Our next date is September 14. Personal care items such as combs, hair bands, toothbrush/toothpaste, hand sanitize, small deodorant, etc. are needed. Parents please keep us in mind as your kids get new backpacks for school, if their old ones are in good condition we would love to have them. These always go very fast.

As we get closer to fall and winter, we will have need for blankets, winter clothes, jackets and coats. In August we had quite a few kids, so our kid clothes tubs are a little low. Men’s jeans, belts are always needed as well as women’s clothing. Shoes go fast also.

In October we are planning a block party. We would like for Sunday School classes to choose items for their class to bring and come with us on that day to pass them out. If anyone in the church has talents that could be used to help those in need, this could include just talking with our friends or being there to pray with them, please let us know. We have access to couple of nurses, that we are talking with to provide blood pressure checks, if anyone would be willing to provide haircuts, that would be great. We plan to have music and burgers. You will be blessed as much, if not more than those we reach out to!

Thank you, Tammy Darter

Delta Grace Mission Trip

This group leaves October 3 and returns October 7.

If you’d be interested in doing this short-term trip, please meet with Donette Johnson on Sunday, September 15 at noon. They would love to have more hands to help the people in this poverty-stricken area of the Mississipi Delta.

UMW by Elaine Pierce

New Hope UMW resumes its regular meeting time at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 19th with a video entitled “Celebrate What’s Right With The World.”

This video asks us to celebrate what’s right with the world and helps us to recognize the possibilities and

find solutions to the many challenges before us. Stunning photography and powerful dialogue help the viewers see how to approach their lives with celebration, confidence, and grace.

We’re hoping to see all our members and we welcome any ladies. It will be a good evening.

November 2 Tell your friends to

apply now if they want a booth at the Bazaar!

Applications are in the office.

Hearts of Hope by Norene Valentour

Hearts of Hope thanks New Hope's congregation for generously supporting the Will Rogers School Supply Drive.

John Lunn, principal, came to meet our caravan as we were driving in. A wonderful way to reach out to children and community. You are all appreciated!

God is great and His blessings are ongoing! Hearts of Hope meet at 9:30 a.m. the first Thursday of each month. We would love to have you join us!

Mary Martha Circle by Donna Reynolds

September means children going back to school and Fall will be here soon. It brings to mind the Bazaar held in November at New Hope and our taking snack trays to our members that must

stay home or at a care facility. The Mary Martha Circle of ladies at New Hope do wonderful ministries like these all through the year.

The Circle met Thursday, Aug. 8 - the second Thurs-day of the month as usual. We had 18 ladies present including 2 visitors. And we sang a loud Happy Birth-day song to 5 of our members. VBS is over and our Circle made refreshments for over 100 children each night in July for this ministry. It was a huge success and we want to lift up and thank Luisa Medina and her large group of helpers. Nellyne Hanlin announced that about 39 pounds of underwear were delivered to Skyline Urban Ministries from our drive called "Undie Sunday". Thanks to all of you generous donors for the "undies". Nellyne also read to the group a story about a man that got eyeglasses at the Skyline Eyeglass Ministry and that Dr. Glenn Partin from Mustang was the volunteer of the month. Thank you, Dr. Glenn Partin.

The Circle will be placing Memory Bricks in our Prayer Garden for our members Joyce Haxton and Freda Danley that passed away recently Other August activities for the Circle included providing dinner for the Strengthening Families MInistry; having a table set up for the Ministry Sunday display; and making and taking lunch to the Prime Timers Senior Citizens at Skyline. We were encouraged to attend the Young at Heart Potluck luncheon on Aug. 29 when speaker Cheryl Presley from the police department will speak on "The Scoop of Scams".

We encourage all ladies to consider joining the Mary Martha Circle of ladies at New Hope for a ministry and fellowship to enjoy. We do Good Work!

At their August meeting Young at Heart got the scoop on scams from speaker Cheryl Presley. One of these involves DNA and fraudulent Medicare claims. People are targeted by phone call or visits and sometimes even at retirement centers or senior nutrition facilities. They are asked for a DNA sample via mouth swab and also their birthdate, Medicare number and other information. At times DNA kits are even mailed to them, requesting information when they are returned. To protect yourself, refuse delivery of any such kit unless you ordered it. Keep a record of the date and sender’s name. Do not give out your personal information to people who contact you. Be wary of any questions unless you know it is a valid request through your doctor. Once this information is in the wrong hands, it can be used in many ways -- none of which will benefit you! Watch for charges on your Medicare Summary, especially screenings you did not want or that your doctor did not order. If anyone experiences this scam, report it immediately. Call the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Medicare Assistance Program at 800 - 763 - 2828. Young at Heart will take a trip in September rather than having a potluck. On FRIDAY, the 20th they will go to Tulsa for lunch and a tour of the botanical gardens. Watch the counter for more information.

New Hope has had to say a temporary good-bye to two members recently.

Harold Brown fought the good fight, served the Lord well for many years and is now at peace. Our hearts are with Cindy, Robbie, Alex, Max, Rex and Maudean as well as the many others of Harold’s family and friends. Harold’s service will be at 2:00 Tuesday, September 3.

Jo Martin unexpectedly joined friends in Heaven. Her passion and service in many areas at New Hope will be missed. A memorial service will be here on Saturday, September 14 at 11:00. Our sympathy and prayers are with Jim, Jo’s sons and granddaughter.

Pre-K would greatly appreciate receiving your already-read, G-rated magazines for our many activities! Thank you, Patti Miller

This is a fund-raiser by the Children’s Department!

Sadly for us, although a glad time for him, Dillard Moore has decided to retire

at the end of September. We’ll see him here Sundays but he and Diane plan to travel and enjoy times with relatives and friends. We wish them the best and will miss his expertise in the financial and business areas of managing New Hope as well as his quiet humor and quick wit.

Children’s Ministry Greetings from Luisa!

Fall programming is underway and I couldn’t be more excited for what the rest of 2019 will look like for our Chil-dren’s Ministry! September is sure to be a great month for the children of New Hope.

Remember that we do NOT have regular evening classes on Sunday, September 1st. Enjoy your La-bor Day weekend with your family!

Our rescheduled Lock- In will take place Friday, September 6th! Join us for fun and fellowship as we spend the night at the church! All children are invited to join us! The fun starts at 6 p.m. on Friday and ends 8 a.m. on Saturday!

Christmas is just around the corner! Our 2019 Children’s Christmas Program will be here before you know it! Our show this year is called “Jingle Bell Beach.” Once again it's that time of year, when aspiring young vocal groups from all around the country make their way to JINGLE BELL BEACH for the famous Jingle Sing competition. When a storm ruins the con-testants' plans for getting home in time

for Christmas, things heat up to tidal wave proportions! In their eagerness to win the contest, it becomes clear that one of the contestants is struggling with his under-standing of the meaning of Christmas. As the others share the story of Jesus, the spirit of competition quickly transforms into the wonderful spirit of Christmas! We are reminded that Christmas is about Emmanuel - God with us - and the Good News that Jesus came to be our Savior. Rehearsals begin September 8th!

Join us for our first ever Children’s Ministry Spaghetti Lunch! It will take place directly following 2nd service on Sunday, September 8th! Come and support our children!

On Wednesday, September 4th Children’s Choir will meet for the first time! Rehearsals begin at 6:00pm. This is open to children in Kindergarten through 5th grade!

Beginning Sunday, September 15th our Upper Elementary Students will be participating in our Bible Buddies program! Each child will be paired with a member of the congregation and will dive deep into learning how to use their Bible!

Family Life Movie Night on the Lawn is Friday, September 20th! The movie will begin at sundown. We hope to see you all here for this fun family event!

Anchor Point (AP): Communities Welcome!

Little Blessings of New Hope

Happy almost Fall! I know we are looking forward to some cooler weather for sure! In preschool ministry, the topic for Sunday school lessons for the month of September will be “God Made the World” and the Bible story will come from Genesis1: 1- 2: 4. We will continue with our Sunday evening class from 5 - 7 p.m! This is such a fun time for kids with a Bible story, craft, play time, music, and dinner. We always welcome new friends!

CDO is off to a great start since beginning on August 20th! We have welcomed back many familiar faces, but we have also added many new families to the CDO Family! We have been so blessed by the outpouring of our CDO families’ generosity already this school year. We asked for school supplies from our families, most of those being cleaning supplies, and they have been more than happy to give. Teachers made a wish list of three things they wanted for their classrooms and I displayed those on apple cut-outs during the Ministry Fair and Meet the Teachers Night and all the apples were “picked”! Thank you to everyone who bought for our teachers.

The students will be learning Bible stories and verses from a curriculum we will be using in Chapel time twice a week this school year.

The themes and letters for the month of September are: B- Bears, C- Community Helpers, D- Dinosaurs, and E- Exercise/ Healthy Habits.

On Thursday, September 5th we will be providing lunch for all our CDO Grandparents in honor of Grandparent’s Day. This will be a great school year!
