1 GRAMMAR

It’s 15 September. Students are back to school a er the holidays. We are asking pupils from diff erent grades about moments that they remember from last year.

Ivan, Grade 8There were many good and interes ng things that happened to me last year but I will always remember the worst moment. It was in June, the school year was almost over, I had no more tests to pass. My class was ge ng ready for a trip to Sandanski and we were all happy about it. While I was packing my bag on the night before the trip, I suddenly slipped on a sock that was lying on the fl oor. I fell on the fl oor and I broke my arm. I couldn’t go to Sandanski and I really felt bad about it.

Diana, Grade 6Last year was great! I learnt many new things, of course, and I met new people. Our English teacher started a pen pal project with a school in Portugal. We were wri ng emails and exchanging messages with students from Porto. In May some of them came to Sofi a and we had good me together. This summer my class is going to Porto and I’m really happy about it.

What are the best things about being a teenager?

Anna, 15You learn something new about yourself and the world around you. Your “teachers” are everywhere – in the shop, on the street, at home, on the Internet. All you need to do is see, listen carefully, read books and talk with people.

Stephan, 13When you are an adult, there are too many things to worry about. You don’t have enough me for your kids and for fun. Teenagers don’t have such problems. We can have fun everywhere, we can fi nd me for everything we really want to do. And that’s the best thing.

Sylvia, 14Clothes! My Mom and I have arguments about clothes too o en. But now I am allowed to wear anything I want. Well, it’s not always possible to be fashionable everywhere. We have to wear uniforms at school and no one is allowed to wear makeup but that’s only half of the day! The other half of the day I am free to be myself.

Yavor, 17You learn new things and they will probably help you later in life. You aren’t too stressed yet. You don’t have many responsibili es. You make new friends. Some mes they are friends for life. It’s the me when you start seriously thinking about your future and what kind of things you would like to do in life.

We’ve asked you about the most exci ng holidays and fes val you’ve taken part in. We’ve received many interes ng messages which we plan to share with you. Today we start with Sanya’s email that describes an amazing local tradi on: Festa de São João do Porto (Saint John’s fes val in Porto, Portugal).

Dear editors, I was in Porto for a week last summer. Porto is a very beautiful and exciting city with lots of interesting and unique traditions. One of them is the festival on June, 24 that I would like to tell you about. Early in the evening lots of people started gathering in the city centre and near the river. All of them were carrying soft plastic hammers of different sizes and smelly garlic fl owers. The tradition says you have to hit strangers with the garlic fl ower (which is a smelly experience, I‛m telling you ☺). If you can‛t do that, the next thing you should try is hitting passers-by with the hammer. The hammers made funny noises, so all the people were laughing when strangers hit them. Of course there was lots of grilled fi sh and wine for the adults. At midnight there were also amazing fi reworks that lasted for half an hour. I was so impressed by this festival. I feel really lucky just because I could take part in all this fun. If you are interested, I still have my plastic hammer here with me. Looking forward to reading about other exciting traditions,Hugs, Sanya
