eightee~ miles from a very desirable hotel at Lander, the Noble.

You should call upon the Rev. John Roberta who lives a little way fran Fort Washakie at his Mission. Be kind enought to tell him I asked you to call. I think he knows more than any living man en the Re Dervation about the early days--chal'Irling, and &bsolutely reliable.

I think you ought to ask to aee Chief Dick Washakie, the son of Chief Washakie. He . must be at least seventy years old. You _might, through an interpreter, mention my name to him·; and he would be g~d to help you. There is a United States interpreter, James E. Crompton, whg; would be of very gre8t value to you, and you do not have to ~ay him for helping you.

I would by a.lJ. means try to go where your father was because these men I menti.on :ma.y not always be there. In other words, what is to be done, is to be done quickly.

Dear Dr . Hebard :

!!£BAAO COLLISeTt~

I noted your recent statement that as far as you know the Lander papers have not carried a review of your book , "Washakie". I enjoyed it so much that I certainly think the attention of the people of Lander and the vicinity ought to be called to it . Of course there are a number of us who have read it . I believe the local library has two or three copies and they are much in demand .

However , I ventured to jot down the enclosed notes after reading the book. I do not know whether this is the sort of thing you would care to see in a local paper or whether they would print it . Perhaps you can make some suggestions which would put me ne arer on the right track . If I can fix up some thing which meets wi t:tit:your approval along this line I should be vrilling t o submit/to t he editor of the Wyoming State Journal with a view of it ' s publication if he so desires .

If you have time to look over the enclosed matter I shall much apprec i ate your comments on the same .

Sincerely,

Superin tendent

Dear Dr. Hebard :

14"9 RD COLLECflO

Believing you to be interested in anything pertaining to Wyoming history and particularly relating to Chief Washakie I am going to ask a favor of you.

Reading your book, 11 Chief Washakie~ two- years ago inspired me to try my hand at a more legendary, but mostly true narrative about the great Chief.

Last October I began it and have just now completed the story written in blank verse .

Would you care to read it and give me an opinion as to its merit? If so I will mail a copy for your perusal .

A. J.Mokler, writer and local historian, has consented to read and comment, also other literary minded local friends.

However though not lrnowing you personally, I should value your opinion very much.

The story contains perhaps 40,000 ~ords, a little over 200 pages of 24 lines each, written in iambic pentameter.

I would appreciate very much if you could do this for me.

Sincerely,

My dear Miss Lyman:

Appreciating the attention which you have given Washakie'a saddle, I shoulc like to send you the fol.lowing, which I trust will be all you or I -;vill need to have to say about too matter. I am. appreciative of you:r kindness.

The don~tor of the saddle, whi~h we.s not the right saddle, was Mrs. Belknap }lash. My memorc.ndum states that under the name or "Nash" will be found a letteJ:' from Mrs. Nash, and also under the "correspondence" tile in my neme will also be found sanethillg about Mrs. Jlash. There should be round a card index showing the name ot eTery person who raa.de a gift to the department, and on tb.is-caid, in addition to the name, should be a letter of the alpha.bet, and the nUt!lber where the gift has been accessioned. The a~eesioned ca.rd in another file should show the name of the giver, and a description or the gift, when and by wham the gift was made , and the date it . ;ma received.

I hardly need to state to you that it is not necessary to follow "this further, but I thought you perhaps might like the above fo:r the files or your office, whi ch has made us realize that 0n the records ot the Historical Department was the ate.~eI!lent of the gift ot Washe.kie 's saddle , which had never been made.

I am ver; grateful to you for yOUl" attention and kindness.

Dear Mrs . Hebard :

I regret very much that I have been unable to identify the picture being returned under separate cover with any specific l andscape within the Wind River range . I have also shown the pi cture to a number of others who have likewise been unable to associate it with any specific spot .

The picture bears some resemblance to several spots with which I am familiar and the range shown in the background of the painting is r at he r typical of the formations found in the mountains al ong t he Wind River r ange . There is always a question , of course, in a painting whether it is a true reproduction of the landscape depicted. Very rarely does a l andscape artist attempt to make a l andscape a photographic picture of the country he is painting . He usually uses the artistic license of combining several subjects for shortening the foreground of the picture , etc ., in order to make an artis tically balanced production .

My dear Dr. Hebard:

Dwyer, Wyoming Jan. 7, 1931

This evening I came across my card with the two references on it, in regard to the typographical errcrs in the book, "Washakie".

The first one is on page 38 written awry, · I believe it is ment to be away. The other one is on page 203~ line 8, I believe the word is supposed to be how, it is written how.

This week is the end of the first semester and I have been pretty busy since I came back from Laramie.

I am sorry that you will not be teaching in the University this summer. I know that they will .miss you, and do not know what they will do without you. I know that the State department requires Wyomi ng History to be taken by all Normal students.

Maybe the President or the Board of the University will have you spend most of your time in research, and writing some more books. I am very anxious for your book on Sacajawea to be finished. There is one book that I would like to see written and that is a history or an autobiography of yourself Dr. Hebard. You have done so much for the state of Wyoming and the welfare of the people; tha t I believe that the people of the state would appreciate it.

Again I wish to thank you for the very delightful interview or little conversation .that I had with you while in Laramie. I always appreciate talking with you or doing t hings for you.

Wishi ng you a Happy and a Prosperous New Year, I r emain

I am exceedingly happy with you in your new arrangement . I know that you are going to give us the story of ';/ya rning in such form that shall please whole generations of people . I am prompted to write this note by the little note you write on your contract .

In Parco this week I stepped into a barber shop and was recogni zed by the barber who hBd his nose deep in a book . The book was 'fashhki e , and he was enjoying it and talked to me steadily regarding hi storic trails , old forts , and stories of the pioneers . He was particularly commendatory regarding your book . I felt you would enjoy this little tribute found in unexpected quarters .

Cordially yours ,

I know th~t I shall enjoy your book just as I enjoyed the volumes about the Bozeman Trail, which have been read by several friends who are interested as I am in historical data about the West.

Miss Grace Raymond Hebard ,

My Dear Grace :

WASHINGTON

April 29 , 1930.

The handsome volume , "Chie·f Washakie" , kindly inscribed by

yourself, arrived yesterday, and I thank you for the same . I

am glad that you could include Chief Washakie 's fine speech on

the occasion of my father's visit to his camp. It will afford

me pleasure to peruse the book at my earliest opportunity , but I

desire first to finish my fat her ' s manuscript , for which you have

been waiting patiently, and which work is now drawing near its close.

The list of your other writings , at the end of nchief Washakie",

indicates that you are quite a voluminous author, and the statement

you sent me recently , with regard to your activities on the board of

trustees and in the faculty of the University , as well as those

reci tad in "Women of ~yoming" , show that you have led an excepti onal;l y

busy and useful life. I am reminded of my father's unusually varied

and active career , during which , as my mother said, he did the work

of several men.

The additional copy of the bulletin of the University , sent

when I reported that the other had not come, was duly received , and

I thank you for it.

I suppose you feel relieved at the approaching close of the

University year. The wolk of the sc ijolastic year must PJ'J' e a st rain.

My dear Dr . Hebard :

Last Friday I made a 30 minute talk on the relation of the early Oregon country to the Sandwich Islands . After my talk , your brother came up to shake hands with me , and we had a very pleasant chat . I Vi as telling him, and I want to tell you what a splendid book you have written in Washakie . I have many of Clark 1 s books, but I do not believe he has ever gotten out a book that equals this one . I would like very much to list it in my next list . I wonder if Clark would give me dealer ' s discount. I believe I could sell quite a number of them . I am going to drop a note to Clark and ask him . In this book you have gathered material from a score of sources not easily get-at- able, and it will prove a delight to the student of our rela.t ions with the Indians and to those interested in the construction of our railroads. I presume you have most of the Dodge books that I have, such as How ¥e Built the Union Pacific , Life of Bridger and quite a number of others . If you do not havethem , I will be glad to loan them ~o you .

V1 i th cordial regards , I am

Sincerely yours ,

j Vix Miss Grace Raymond Hebard The University of Wyoming Laramie, Wyoming

I

My dear Miss Hebard:

You may remember that you wrote to me in February, 1932, with regard to certain buffalo horns which my father had at one time.

Also you told me at that time that your book, "Washakie" could be obtained from a publisher in Glendale, California.

I would like to have your book, but it would be more convenient to get it in New York if it is on sale here. Will you kindly let me know?

Myself, and some of my family expect to drive West this summer through Arizona and New Mexico, and we want to go up to old Fort Washakie. I am now getting information with regard to roads through Wyoming, and on the way home we ~ight come through Laramie.

Have you any idea the location of old Fort Stanbor---I think that is the right spelling, at any rate it was pronounced that way.

HDC/p enc/l

Sincerely yours,
