The Structure of the Student Council The Student Council has a new structure this year comprising now of student representation from Years 8-12.

Years 8-10 are represented by 4 students each and Years 11 and 12 are represented by 8 students each, forming a council of 28 students in total.

Another change to tradition has been the replacement of Head Boy and Head Girl with a President and Vice-President in Years 11 and 12. These students were elected by their year group and staff. Congratulations to the following students who won this leadership role.

Year 11

President: Corinne Kissell

Vice-President: Therese Colman

Year 12

President: Kristen Pavlinovich

Vice-President: Casey Hodgkinson.

Also, congratulations to the 12 lower school students who were nominated and voted onto the Student Council for 2007. (Pictured on opposite page).

What’s been happening so far?

Leadership and Organisation Workshop Earlier this term, all students participated in a leadership and organisation workshop at the Zone Room. This meeting gave Student Councillors the opportunity to get to know each other, discuss ideas and begin planning for the remainder of this year. It was a very successful workshop, and it was evident the group as a whole are a vibrant and enthusiastic council.

Meetings The Student Council meets every Thursday at 1.50 in Room 4. This term, was meeting is chaired by Corinne Kissell and the minutes were recorded by Therese Colman. The chair and secretary is rotated between Upper School Students.

So far the meetings have been productive and well run.

Students are encouraged to seek out their year representatives if they have issues they would like to have discussed.

Sausage Sizzle Last Friday the Student Council held a sausage sizzle to raise money for charities they would like to support, one of these being a deaf orphanage for children in Bali.

Thank you to the Lower School Councillors for all your hard work in setting up the sausage sizzle and to everyone in the school who supported the event. Your donation will go a long way to helping someone else who is less fortunate.

Year 10 Maths Enrichment Program Ten students from Mr Stewart’s Year 10 extension mathematics are participating in the Gauss Enrichment Program. Gauss was one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, often ranked with Archimedes and Isaac Newton. This course presents information and exercises on a range of topics, little of which is taught in secondary school. Each chapter in the book introduces new mathematical concepts , presents some key mathematical ideas followed by some illustrative examples with suggested approaches and sets of exercises for which there are fully worked solutions.

Students have now completed 5 chapters from the book and have gained some valuable insight into some amazing theories, proofs and concepts.

A Gauss problem:

The cockle shells that grow in Mary’s garden need exactly ten litres of water every day and they can be watered only once a day. She has two jugs of nine litres and eleven litres capacity respectively and a pool full of water. Can she water her cockle shells as required?

(Note: The water can only be poured onto the cockle shells once!!)

PEER MEDIATION TRAINING SHOWS SUCCESS Fourteen Lower School students have been trained as Peer Mediators during this semester. They learnt the SCRAM method of conflict resolution.

Peer Mediators carry out the following duties:

help in keeping a positive school environment by monitoring peers and stepping in when conflicts arise;

assist administrators, teachers and students with resolving conflicts amongst students;

mentor students to provide a long-term resolution in bullying situations;

support new students to the school;

identify isolated and ostracised peers and design ways to integrate them with their peer group.

Peer Mediators have been involved in five bullying situations to date. These situations were resolved and the Peer Mediators continue to monitor the social situation in the yard. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of the Peer Mediators, Margaret River Senior High School is further improving the already positive interaction amongst students. YEAR 8 STUDENTS ‘ADOPT’ A DIGGER I n l a s t w e e k ’ s assembly, the Year 8’s invited 82-year old Able Seaman Eric Walter Barnard to their assembly to present him with a plaque and to thank him for his service during World War 2. YEAR 9 HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS PILOT WORKSHOP

Ten Year 9 girls have been selected to trail a new workshop. In this workshop, students look at interpersonal communication and discuss strategies to maintain healthy relationships. Students also learn about relaxation techniques, social and emotional wellbeing, stress management and others. The five workshops are conducted by Kathryn Davy from the Youth Pathways Mission Australia.

It is envisaged that this course will run for all students in Years 8 and 9 next year.

Left: Jaymee Crosby, Elisa Musgrave, Adrianna Russell, Elizabeth Kowalski, Rebecca Howard, Alex Miller, Shani Wright, Amanda Waterhouse, Pip Wenman and Jess Spargo.

The Year 8 German class went to the Recreation Centre to play European Handball and Völkerball after having recorded interviews. left: Scott Guthrie-Phelps in handball action, and above: Ricky-Lee Pow and Elise Elliott during the recording of their interview.

The Year 8’s have taken the lead again in the weekly attendance tally. As the graph shows, early Term 2 featured a drop in attendance compared to the second half of Term 1. Thanks to all students and their parents for making a fantastic effort and for bringing in absentee notes straight away to keep the unexplained absence rate low.

Parents are reminded that all Lower School programmes will run until Friday, July 6th, the last day of school. The 100% Attendance club membership for Term 2 is still available to many students in Years 8, 9 and 10. These students will be awarded in the first assembly after the July holidays.

On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th May, fifteen Year 10’s, two staff and “Team Hadley” (father Shayne and son Hans) travelled to Wellington National Park, east of Bunbury, for a true mountain bike experience.

Once set up at Honeymoon Pool campsite, the group set off for a three hour cross-country ride on the Pile Road Trail System. This tested the boy’s endurance, many resorting to pushing their bikes up the long climbs.

On the second day the group, after packing up and a campsite clean up, headed to the Wellington Mills Downhill Track, used as part of the State Downhill Series. This track is fast and technical, steep, slippery, jumps, rock drops, expect anything! Thanks to the expertise of the Hadley’s, Shane’s explainations and Hans’ demonstrations, the group managed to negotiate the track with only a few crashes, some bruising and a little skin loss. Not a bad result considering the difficulty of the track and the speed which the boys were attacking it .

Many thanks must go to Shayne and Hans Hadley whose knowledge and experience with both the site and mountain biking in general made this camp

possible. Also thanks to Glenn Anderson (Prac. Teacher) from Edith Cowan University for his help.

This is the second year this camp has been held at Wellington National Park. Each time the trails and surrounding area become more familiar resulting in a safer, more streamlined and rewarding experience.

Here’s to 2008!

Year 10 Outdoor Education

Two absolutely fantastic roping days were recently held with the Year 9 Roping classes at Wilyabrup.

Students had an opportunity to tackle climbs of varying difficulty or abseil off “Stainless Steel”, a 40 metre sea cliff overlooking an angry ocean.

Both groups took full advantage of the activities on offer and conducted themselves safely, constantly encouraging one another onto new heights (so to speak!).

Thanks to Glenn Anderson (Prac. Teacher from Edith Cowan University), for his help on the first day.

Special thanks must go to Mick Dempsey of The Margaret River Climbing Company whose expertise particularly with respect to climbing and whose professionalism and general rapport with students are second to none. Mick is a very easy man to work with.

Lastly, thanks to the weather gods who despite having two days of rain forecast, decided to bless us with perfect weather for roping.

On the week of Tuesday 5th June to Friday 8th June, twenty two Years 11 and 12 students undertook the annual Upper School Outdoor Education Hiking Expedition. The expedition serves as a vital tool to complete a number of assessments ranging from observations of performance with respect to hiking, camp craft, navigation and leadership to completion of an expedition logbook which shows the students’ planning as well as a record of personal experiences on expedition.

The group set out from Margaret River Senior High School Tuesday morning and travelled to the Pemberton Camp School for final preparations. Once kitted out with all the necessary equipment and food selections made for the four days, we were back on the bus for our drop-off point.

The hike was on the northern side of Pemberton, incorporating three campsites on the Bibbulman Track, Boarding House, Beavis and Beedalup. Day one consisted of a 4 km transection which involves simply following a designated bearing through untracked bush until a predetermined landmark is reached, in this case the Bibbulman Track. Days two and three consisted of 20km walks between campsites (long days). Day four was an easy 6km walk to our pick-up point. In pairs, the students took turns at leading the group over the four days, navigating and pacing. In addition, students were required to give accurate grid references at various points to show they were aware of their exact location at all point of the walk.

It must be remembered that at all times students had a backpack (~15kg) on their back containing all their food, cooking equipment, clothes, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, fluids, tent, etc. ….. everything required to survive the four days.

The weather gods smiled on us with only a little rain late on day three and early day four, with mild temperatures at night.

Overall the group put in an exceptional performance, remaining positive and focussed even in times of duress. The group dynamic was fantastic.

I would like to thank Mark Hudson, Principal of the Pemberton Camp School, for his assistance over the four days and organising a large component of the equipment used. Furthermore, thanks to Glenn Anderson and Nadia Trotter (Prac. Teachers from Edith Cowan University) for their help on expedition and serving as extra sets of eyes to make more complete observations of student performance.

Country Week preparation is all but complete with less than a week to go until our 2007 team departs for Perth. This year we have a smaller team utilising only upper school students from Margaret River. We are sending a team of only 66 students over six sporting teams, a speech and a debating team. Due to issues with our accommodation venue from the previous year, we will now be staying at the Perth YHA on Wellington Street in Perth.

This year has also seen an increase in the cost of Country-week by $10, but with the rise in food and entertainment prices, bus charges and general fees, this increase in the overall price is inevitable, but hopefully affordable. Much fundraising has been organised for the students this year, with a major raffle and community donations just some of the means of reducing costs. In all, over $15,000 was fundraised this year, which has significantly reduced the final cost for each student. I would like to thank the many businesses and parents who supported our Country-week push this year.

I would like to take this opportunity to also wish all teams and coaches the best of luck for their upcoming week in Perth. Many have trained hard for the best part of five months, and I hope that they all enjoy themselves in Perth.

The weather forecast was bleak and storms were brewing but this didn’t stop the enthusiasm of the MRSHS girls. They trained hard, honing their skills and practising their footy game strategies.

The first game was against Busselton Senior High who looked much bigger and intimidating.

The girls exploded after the first siren and were 30 points up at half time. Busselton tried hard to catch up but we were able to keep our lead and the final score was 41- 35.

The second game was against McKillop who had just won their last game. Margaret River dominated in all areas of the field and kept them scoreless for the first half. The heavens opened but this didn’t dampen the eager spirits of the Marg’s girls. The second half saw McKillop score one goal and a quieter half from our team but the final score was still 45 – 6. Awesome defence by all!

The final game was a pearler! Georgina Molloy came out on a mission not having won a game but we quickly dampened their spirits by our tenacity and skill. This game displayed fantastic team work across the field and a passion for the game. The final score was 50 – 0 which was a wonderful way to end the day.

Best Players – All the team should be congratulated for their effort but I must make mention of Tash Rigby, Olivia Payne and Ingrid Colyer who played exceptional football all day. Their energy and focus was amazing!

A big thank you to Tristan Fairey (Super Coach) who attended all training sessions and was a wonderful assistant on the day. Another thank you to Kael Jose and Dylan Jennings who helped with boundary and goal umpiring.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with this fantastic group of students. Thank you for the experience.

Kara Beecham

On Thursday 24th May a team of twenty two Year 8 and 9 boys represented MRSHS in the Smarter Than Smoking Cup Football Carnival held in Busselton.

In very windy and difficult conditions the boys played some excellent team football against some much bigger opponents.

The boys played three games on the day, winning one and losing two. The outcome may well have been different if they managed to be more productive when kicking with the strong wind that prevailed throughout the day.

The eventual winner of the boys competition was MacKillop Catholic College who went through the day undefeated. To our boys credit, they matched MacKillop in most areas and had their chances to snatch victory in the last minutes of a tightly fought contest.

Final scores for the day were as follows;

Busselton: 8.4 (52) defeated Margaret River: 1.4 (10)

MacKillop: 4.2 (26) defeated Margaret River: 3.4 (22)

Margaret River: 7.5 (47) defeated Georgiana Molloy: 3.3 (21)

All players contributed at some stage during the three matches. The most consistent players throughout the day were;

Angus McColl, Areef Walker, Harry Marsh, James Herbert, Seve Grantis, Jake Ziere, Ashley Biddulph and Jacob Payne.

Goal Scorers throughout the three games played were as follows;

Seve Grantis 3, Angus McColl 3, Matt Gozzi 2, Brendan Martin 1, Jesse Gautry 1 and Ashley Biddulph 1.

The boys are to be congratulated on what was a great day.

Congratulations to all the students who were selected in the Interschool Athletics Team. It was a great day in Busselton and a great team effort!

The Lower School Team were second overall and the Upper School Team were a close sixth with very few points between schools.

There were some notable individual performances with many students achieving a placing. All students should be proud of their individual contributions.

Congratulations to Givenjiri Lamperd (Yr 8) and Natasha Rigby (Yr 9) for their outstanding performances in winning Champion Girl in their respective age groups. An excellent achievement!

Thanks also to the Physical Education department for their support and Mr Beecham, Mr Anderson and Mr Gurney for their help as officials on the day.

Mrs T Cameron

Congratulations to all the Lower School girls who represented the school in the South West Netball High School Cup. Excellent results were achieved by all teams, with great team work and sportsmanship.
