Tournament Review
Opening Mixed ScrambleSaturday, April 27th
Our opening event of the season was an all-around nice day... nice turnout, nice weather and nice scores. The winning team of Fred Atwell, Tyler Imbriaco, Tom Johnston, and Jim Pedrick, shot a smooth 63 and took home the top prize in the
3
first tournament of the year. Three teams tied for second with a score of 67, thanks to everyone who came out!
Fox Shoot-out 9-9-9Saturday, May 18th
This event featured nine holes, each of three different formats: scramble, better ball and modified alternate shot.
Our overall champions this year were Mike Crowley and Stu Munro recording an impressive Net score of 87. Our A-Flight Champions were Kevin Fries and Marc Zgorski (94) and our B-Flight Champions were Louise Lupone and Jan Welch
(95)
Men's Summer ClassicJune 28th-30th
This years Summer Classic was one of our best ever, with three days of great weather, fantastic course conditions and spirited competition. Each team in our
seven flights played five matches in their quest for a Flight Championship. At the end of the matches, the seven flight champions and one Wildcard team gathered on
the 16th tee for a big alternate shot shoot-out to determine an overall winner. The large gallery was treated to an exciting finish as the D-Flight Champions, Mike
Crowley and his guest Mike Higgins, edged out the C-Flight team of Bill Buscetto and his guest Kevin Petchark on the 18th hole by one stroke.
D Flight: Mike Crowley & Mike Higgins
A Flight: Marc Zgorski & Maki Kobayashi

Thanks to all of the participants for making this
such a great weekend!
Flag TournamentThursday, July 4th
Our Independence Day Flag Tournament is always one of our more popular events of the year. Everyone starts with a flag in tow and plants it where their score plus
their handicap equals 71.
This year's winner was Harriet Wolfe who finished 18 holes with enough strokes left to get her ball all the way to the green on #2. Susan Burke finished second, reaching the #2 fairway. Laura Yurczyk finished third, reaching the #1 fairway. John Twomey finished fourth at the greenside bunker on #1 and Nancy Delisi
finished in fifth on the fairway of #1.
Senior Club ChampionshipAugust 3rd & 4th

This year's event differed from last year, mostly due to the fact that
everyone was able to play 36 holes instead of only 18. Thank you for
cooperating this year Mother Nature! The women's division saw defending champion Linda Lyons edge Cindy
Hedge by one stroke, with a total score of 165, to retain her title as Champion. Cindy still finished tied for first place
Net with Barbara DePalo, with scores of 148.
The men's flight needed two sudden death playoff holes to determine this
year's champion. Kevin Fries claimed the title of Champion over Jack
Gedney in a thrilling battle that had both men totaling 159 after the 36 holes. The Net division winner was
David Thibodeau shooting an impressive score of 135, while Bob
Klein finished in second place with a score of 144.

The format for this event was 2 Best Balls of the Foursome. There were 60 competitors for this year’s tournament, vying for the Gross and Net division titles. This year’s Gross division team consisted of Rose Petersen, Linda Olisky, Mary Piotrowski, and Lynn Scully with a score of 153. The second place
team of Susan Wiedmann, Amy Wilson, Debbie Gagliardi, and Jackie Cahill shot a 155. The Net division team of Ann Deshefy, Judy Miles, Jan Pacific, and Phyllis Palmer shot 118 and edged out the second place team of Hollis Barry,
Helene Nichols, Kacey Constable, and Pat Ermler by one stroke as they scored 119.
Club ChampionshipAugust 17th & 18th
It was déjá vu all over again, as Linda Lyons captured her 13th Women’s
Club Championship in 14 years with a 36-hole total of 170. This year,
however, Linda had to battle Cindy Hedge over 4 sudden-death playoff
holes before reclaiming her title. It was thrilling golf to witness as both ladies battled shot for shot during the extra holes of play. In the Women’s Net
Flight, Sue Lundgren ran away with the title over the field with a score of 139. Louise Lupone finished in 2nd
Place with a score of 150.
In the men’s division Julius Oppenheimer opened with an impressive score of 71 in
round one, en-route to his championship total of 147. Bill Buscetto moved up the leader
board on day 2 shooting the low round of the tournament with a score of 70 and finished with a 2nd Place total score of 151. In the Hopyard Flight, relative newcomer to golf
Adam Viggiano (he has only been playing for 3 years), earned gross honors with a 36-hole
total of 179. Adam’s second round score of 83 gave him a 1 stroke victory over tournament veteran Kim Kaiser, who finished with a total of 180 for the weekend. Despite missing out on the Gross Division title, Kim still managed
to take home the title of Net Division champion with a 2-stroke victory (148) over
Tom Palilonis (150).

One Swing Was All They Needed!
First Ace of the Year: First Hole-in-One recorded this year was on Wednesday, June 26th, on hole #11 by Susan Wiedmann. She used her pitching wedge from 98 yards for her first ace of
her golfing career!
Signature Aces: Gary Boone used a nine iron from 158 yards for his Hole-in-One on #4 on June
6th. Gary never had a doubt after contact, but his playing partners are still in disbelief from what they witnessed.
Alan Kraska mastered hole #8 on Friday, August 9th with one swing of his pitching wedge. The hole played 122 yards long and was rendered defenseless with his
laser-like precision.
Most Recent Ace: On Friday August 23rd, Mike Crowley aced hole #4 from 153 yards out, using his
eight iron. This was a great confidence booster, propelling him to victory at the Member/Member-Member/Guest the next day!
Congratulations to the three of you!
From the Office of the Superintendent
The July heat wave is in the rearview mirror! The golf course can finally breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy these cooler evening temperatures. It was a record setting month for the state of Connecticut. July was the hottest month on record in the past 114 years with 19 of the 31 days
exceeding 90 degrees per Ryan Hanrahan, meteorologist of NBC 30. We are very glad to be through the excruciating heat and now look towards healing in the stressed areas on the playing surfaces at the Hopyard.
Here are a few of the items that are in the works as we turn the calendar towards the fall months.
Aerification took place August 27th and 28th on all playing surfaces. The Hopyard Maintenance team focused on the greens, utilizing 3/8” hollow tines to remove cores and topdressed all greens to help remove thatch
and promote drainage. After the aeration and topdressing, granular fertilizer was applied to all greens to help aid recovery efforts. The last
part of this process will be over seeding the greens. This is the first time we have over seeded greens in several years. We are incorporating a
newer creeping bentgrass variety, Luminary, which in university trials has shown excellent adaptability to extreme heat, provides an earlier spring
green up and helps reduce fungicide applications. We are very excited to have this process underway and know this will lead to premier playing
conditions for fall golf.
11
Our outside contractors, Sportscapes, will be aerifying fairways, approaches and some tees. The same process as last year which is
utilizing 7/8” hollow tines, followed by a blowing of the playing surfaces. They are a very professional company and we are very fortunate to have them help with our aerification needs. Lastly, the white and blue tees on the par 3s will be aerated by the Hopyard team. Due to the increase of
rounds of golf this season, we will be aerating select tees with 3/8” hollow tines. The tees will then be topdressed and then over seeded. Finally, all
playing surfaces will receive a granular product, Sea Blend which is utilized twice a season. This organic fertilizer provides excellent fall color
and is an extremely high-end product.
Once the aerification process has concluded I will be sitting down with John Garcia of Atlantic Golf & Turf to review the results from our ISTRC test. This test provides information regarding our drainage capabilities, bulk density regarding root growth and organic matter content. This test
was last conducted in 2013 and we look forward to determining what changes may or may not be needed to improve our current aerification
practices.
Brian and I also had the opportunity to meet with Greg Moore, from U.S. Pitchcare regarding some tee expansion on a few of our par 3s. U.S.
Pitchcare has been diligently working to level and repair many of Crumpin-Fox teeing surfaces the past two years. If you have not had a chance to check out our sister course, it is well a worth a trip! Some of
the areas that are currently being discussed include: the two main driving tee areas, expanding the tees on 4, 8 and 11. We will provide more
information about these projects as we get closer to the end of September.
As always, if there are ever any questions or concerns regarding the golf course please feel free to reach out to me by email or by phone. We
would like to thank our members and guests for their cooperation when aerification begins at the end of the month. It is a crucial agronomic
process that will help promote healthy turf for years to come.
