DIRECTOR’S NOTE: Welcome, and thank you for joining us at A Chorus Line. As someone who identifies as a dancer first and human second, this show holds a special place in my heart. Original cast member, Baayork Lee has been quoted saying this musical is “the first reality show” because it was created from the real-life stories and experiences of dancers. I think you’ll find that even if you identify as human first and dancer second (or one hundredth), the stories of adolescent awkwardness, youthful exuberance, and enduring hope through tribulation will be relatable. We have certainly all “put ourselves on the line” for something we believe in, even if it wasn’t exactly a chorus line. Given that the text and lyrics for this show are based on interviews conducted with dancers in 1974, it is important to acknowledge that our language and mentalities have changed in the present day. This show presents a binary view of gender, discusses taking one’s life in a variety of contexts, describes and demonstrates sexual harassment/assault, and utilizes descriptive terms for groups of people that are now largely known to be offensive. In signing on to perform this show, we sign on to step into a 1974 world view for the span of one evening. This is not an endorsement of these ideas, but a presentation of a different time. The actors conducted regular conversations around consent in relation to these difficult subjects and this difficult language throughout the process. We did not always say every word as written throughout the rehearsal process, but we will be performing every word as written in this performance. If that will not be conducive to your safety, you should consider whether staying for the performance is appropriate for you. As an ensemble we would also like to take this moment to acknowledge the indigenous land where this performance takes place. We will be performing A Chorus Line in Kickapoo Territory and Osage Nation land. If you would like to learn more about the indigenous lands that you have occupied, you can find information at native-land.ca. If you are a member of the Missouri State University community, we also encourage you to learn more about the MSU Office of Multicultural Programs and sign up for their contact list at missouristate.edu/multiculturalprograms.
