Secretary’s Message

Education is not an act of acquiring knowledge but learning a skill to lead life and forming one’s personality. This is an ennobling process of growth. I can boldly say that we have excelled in every initiative that we undertook and we have stood together in facing the challenges in realizing quality education. In all this, we have made every effort to be sensitive and compassionate to the marginalized and the people in need. This has been the unique character of Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, Jalandhar education system. I feel happy when the bright and talented students from a rural background progress steadily from deprived performance to better performance, moving towards excellence. LKCW has served the vicinity, developing a reputation as a centre for academic excellence in a safe, caring and positive environment. Here we offer a broad curriculum that meets the needs of our diverse learners. We are committed to equipping our students with the skills and resources they need for a successful future. As a learning community, we also value education outside the classroom and believe it is important for our students to be actively involved in the arts, cultural, sports and leadership opportunities. Our academic results are consistently high, and we have the confidence and respect of our community. Thank you for your interest and trust in LKCW. We look forward to meeting you.

Welcome to college life!

INTRODUCTIONAgainst the scenario of darkness that has engulfed the human horizon due to ignorance, oppression, corruption, denial of justice, inhuman treatment of women, drugs depicted by the dark background of the crest there is light that dispels the gloominess of our world and heralds joy and peace, it is the light of knowledge which is gained through education. The patrons of our college, honourable late Sr. Balbir Singh ji conscious of the social and moral dimensions of the fast- changing modern world, endeavoured hard to herald a new era in the field of education. The College Governing Council embraces with all sincerity and loyalty the mission of enlightening the young minds by striving effortlessly to sustain a balance between goodwill and workmanship. The sapling of Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, Jalandhar was sown as a women section of the Lyallpur Khalsa Educational Body in the year 1960. It has now bloomed into a full fledged, independent and prestigious institution affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. We endeavour to stand for academic excellence, development of skills and especially character formation based on the love for Almighty and service of people as exemplified by our prophets. We have come a long way since 1960 and today are able to offer our students good infrastructure, experienced faculty, efficient administration and a wide repertoire of courses. We aim to train our students to become good citizens, distinguished for their sincere commitment to work, society and country at large. Let your college be widely known and appreciated for the fibre and sinew of moral and intellectual strength of the academic community, which it is privileged to house and nourish, and for its efforts to dispel darkness and brighten the lives of young learners.

LOCATIONThe college is situated near Sadar Police Station with G.T Road on one side and Cantt. Road on the other. The groovy, serene eucalyptus plantation lends healthy and scenic beauty to the college. Though it’s location is distanced from the maddening crowd of the city, yet it provides an easy access to the girls of Model Town, Defence Colony, Urban Estate, Ranjit Nagar, Mota Singh Nagar, Cantt. and other parts of the city. It also attracts students from Phagwara, Adampur and rural areas of Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. Local locomotives running

through Jalandhar and Nakodar stop at Lyallpur Khalsa College halt which the government has specially provided in response to the efforts made by the college to facilitate the approach of the students from villages. All buses ply on Cantt. Road or G.T Road from various parts of the city and the locomotives stop in front of the college gate during the college hours, and the main bus stand is also very close to the college.

BUILDINGThe college is housed in a commodious building constructed on hygienic lines with its main entrance gate on the Cantt. Road side. The college has well- equipped labs, spacious and airy classrooms, and an air- conditioned auditorium. A spacious hostel caters the needs of the students coming from outside the city. The college canteen is well furnished and properly maintained. Lush green lawns overlapped with fresh flowers render not only beauty to the college building but also provides a very congenial atmosphere for the harmonious growth of the students.

VISIONThe College envisions to admit undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students those who have the highest potential for benefitting from the education provided by the College and the University, regardless of their financial, social, religious or ethnic background. The College provides teaching facilities, support (including pastoral care) and social, recreational and sporting facilities to enable each of its students to realise as much as possible of their academic and personal potential whilst studying here. This forms the basis for the College’s statutory purpose, the advancement of education, religion, learning and research, and the College pursues its charitable objects for the public benefit through a wide variety of activities, like providing, in conjunction with the University , offering a world class educational opportunities ; supporting students financially and rewarding excellence through the provision of bursaries, scholarships, prizes and grants, as well as assisting students in particular financial hardships. An OverviewThe college has a beautiful hostel equipped with modern amenities. Though situated on the same campus, it is housed in a totally separate residential block. Located in an open compound with beautiful lawns laid with flowers, the building is surrounded on all sides by huge walls to ensure safety and protection to the inmates of the hostel. It is a ventilated building with a spacious courtyard which apart from providing facilities to rest and relax in the open during the summer and enjoy the sunshine during the winter, is a good medium to keep the rooms well-lighted. On the back side, each room has a separate verandah. Atmosphere in the hostel is very congenial for the harmonious development of personality. Conditions are conducive to good health and sound mind, enriching both body and soul by developing a sense of uniqueness as well as companionship among the wards. The homely atmosphere does not let students stay aloof as no feeling of nostalgia haunts them.

ADMISSION TO THE HOSTELAdmission to the hostel is made clearly on the first come first serve basis. The fundamentals required for admission are good morals, discipline and good character. Seats in the hostel are limited and no one can claim admission in the hostel as a matter of right. It is compulsory for every student seeking admission to the hostel to bring her father/guardian along her at the time of admission. In no case younger sister or brother will be accepted as the guardian.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTIONS AND PRAYERSThe hostel has a well-equipped Gurdwara where students assemble for collective prayer in the morning and evening. Akhand Path and Sehaj Path of Shri Guru Granth Sahib are done individually or collectively by the inmates during the whole year. Attendance at prayer is compulsory. Celebrations of Gurpurbs, anniversaries of Great Prophets and other festivals is a regular feature of the hostel. At the prayer-meetings, girls are acquainted with high ideals of Sikhism and other religions. Children are taught to believe in one Creator and ‘common brotherhood’, thus rising above the narrow barriers of colour, caste and creed, The motto is :-

Two girls every year are given medical duty to assist the superintendent in looking after the sick ones. Their main job is to give them prescribed diet and medicines etc. at the proper time and render the required help as necessary. Details about the sick ones are duly recorded in a note-book which is placed before the Principal every day after the doctor has visited the hostel.
