4 Consumer Food for Elders With an ageing population in Singapore and the region, there has been an increasing interest from Food & Beverage Consumer Packaged Goods (CPGs) to identify and leverage opportunities in this area. Our CPG companies must innovate quickly to address the specific needs of this rapidly expanding consumer segment.

The elderly are those most in need of nutritionally dense foods, and enhancements in flavor to compensate for losses in their sensory functions as they age. The gradual loss of taste perception in them can thus cause lower food intake, resulting in undernutrition. Besides taste, many elderly also have difficulty chewing and swallowing, making the texture of the food vital. Special foods will need to be designed to give a greater palatability to those with dysphagia. Given the diverse needs from the ageing population, there lies significant opportunities for new product development by our CPG companies to target this growing segment in the population.

As our intern, you will: a) Conduct desktop research on the latest industry trends and market developments in the Food for Elders segmentb) Analyse company developments and innovation trends of leading CPG companies, to identify potential opportunities under the Food for Elders segment that Singapore/EDB can look into. Some examples could include: Developing Elderly nutrition bars/beverages, or easy to swallow foods, etc. c) Review the value propositions and existing capabilities of our local ecosystem (e.g. Research Institutes, Institutes of Higher Learning, MNCs, start-ups, etc) in the Food for Elders segmentd) Determine if there are any market gaps in this area, and whether there is a role for Singapore to play ine) Assess if there is value capture to Singapore in attracting activities in this area (e.g. R&D, product development, manufacturing, etc) to Singapore.

During your internship, you will have the opportunity to meet the world’s leading CPG companies (e.g. Nestle, Unilever, Kellogg’s, Mondelez, etc) and learn more about their business and the CPG industry in Singapore.

Review of corporate management practices

EDB’s corporate management practices are evolving as investment practices change. For example, the focus on developing non-financial/non-tax value propositions mean that 1) EDB needs to determine new investment clocking principles, 2) EDB may be less able to rely on incentive application forms to measure and clock investments, and need to find other ways of doing so.

As our intern, you will:a) Perform a stocktake of specific aspects of EDB’s corporate management practicesb) Review and compare best practices with other organizationsc) Develop operationalizable recommendations to enhance EDB’s corporate management practices

During the internship, you will also have the opportunity to be exposed to and work on small projects relating to EDB’s data systems and capabilities.
