NEW DELHI - Indiarsquos agri-culture minister said on Thurs-day the government was ready to consider further changes to divi-sive reforms that have triggered the biggest protests by farmers in years

Narendra Singh Tomar urged farmersrsquo leaders to come in for another round of talks to end the impasse over new agricultural legislation the government says was meant to overhaul antiquat-ed procurement procedures and open up the market

Huge crowds have been out on the streets around Delhi since November demanding the gov-ernment repeal the laws that they say will eventually dismantle In-diarsquos regulated markets and leave them at the mercy of private buyers

Protest leaders have threatened to intensify their demonstrations from Saturday by blocking na-tional highways and by boycot-ting public events held by lead-ers of Prime Minister Narendra Modirsquos ruling party

ldquoThe government is ready to consider any additional objec-tions of the farmers if they have anyrdquo the minister told reporters

Ranjitsinh Disale a teacher at Zilla Parishad Primary School in the village of Paritewadi in

the western Indian state of Ma-harashtra was chosen as winner from more than 12000 nomina-tions and applications from over 140 countries around the world

The award recognized his ef-forts to promote girlsrsquo education at the school whose pupils are mostly from tribal communities

The Global Teacher Prize said he learned the local language of the village in order to translate class textbooks into his pupilsrsquo mother tongue

He also created unique QR

codes on the textbooks to give students access to audio poems video lectures stories and assign-ments greatly improving school attendance His QR technology is now being rolled out more widely across India

CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge struck down two Trump administra-tion rules designed to drastically curtail the number of visas issued each year to skilled foreign workers

The changes applying to the H-1B visa program announced in October include imposing salary requirements on compa-nies employing skilled overseas workers and limits on specialty occupations De-partment of Homeland Security officials deemed it a priority because of corona-virus-related job losses and estimated as many as one-third of those who have ap-plied for H-1Brsquos in recent years would be denied under the new rules

US District Judge Jeffrey White in

California said the government didnrsquot fol-low transparency procedures and its con-tention that the changes were an emergen-cy response to pandemic job losses didnrsquot hold water because the Trump adminis-tration has floated the idea for some time but only published the rules in October

ldquoThe COVID-19 pandemic is an event beyond defendantsrsquo control yet it was within defendantsrsquo control to take action earlier than they didrdquo White wrote

The US issues up to 85000 H-1B vi-sas each year in sectors including tech-nology engineering and medicine Usu-ally theyrsquore issued for three years and renewable Most of the nearly 600000 H-1B visa holders in the US are from India and China

The H-1B rules announced weeks

before the election were part of President Donald Trumprsquos wider agenda to curb nearly all forms of immigration In June he issued an order temporarily suspend-ing the H-1B program until the end of the year

The US Chamber of Commerce and universities including the California In-stitute of Technology sued in California arguing there wasnrsquot adequate notice or time for the public to comment on the changes They also said the rules par-ticularly related to requiring a prevail-ing wage for visa-holders would have a drastic impact on new hires and ldquosever the employment relationship of hundreds of thousands of existing employees in the United Statesrdquo

The University of Utah cited an ex-ample where an H-1B employee seeking renewal was paid an $80000 salary but would have to be paid $208000 under the new rule

The judge agreed that the federal gov-ernment didnrsquot make a case for imple-menting the rules under the Admin-istrative Procedure Act which makes agencies accountable to the public by requiring a detailed process for enacting regulations

Ramesh 31 of San Jose pleaded guilty on August 26 2020 to one count of in-tentionally accessing a protected computer without authorization and recklessly caus-ing damage to Cisco Ramesh worked for Cisco but resigned in approximately April 2018 According to the plea agreement Ramesh admitted to intentionally access-ing the Cisco Systems cloud infrastructure that was hosted by Amazon Web Services without Ciscorsquos permission on September 24 2018

Ramesh further admitted that during his unauthorized access he deployed a code from his Google Cloud Project account

that resulted in the deletion of 456 vir-tual machines for Ciscorsquos WebEx Teams application which provides video meet-ings video messaging file sharing and other collaboration tools He admitted that he acted recklessly in deploying the code and consciously disregarded the sub-stantial risk that his conduct would harm Cisco

As a result of Rameshrsquos conduct over 16000 WebEx Teams accounts were shut down for up to two weeks and caused Cis-co to spend approximately $1400000 in employee time to restore the damage to the application and refund over $1000000 to affected customers No customer data was compromised as a result of the defendantrsquos conduct

Ramesh was sentenced to serve a one-year period of supervised release follow-ing the 24 months in prison and to pay a $15000 fine The defendant is out of cus-tody and will begin serving the sentence on February 10 2021

The Chamber of Commerce said in a statement that the ruling ldquohas many com-panies across various industries breath-ing a huge sigh of reliefrdquo with the visa changes having ldquothe potential to be in-credibly disruptive to the operations of many businessesrdquo

Messages left for spokespeople with the Labor and Homeland Security depart-ments werenrsquot immediately returned

The wage rule has prompted at least two other federal lawsuits in New Jersey and Washington DC

Owner and operator of India-based call centers sentenced to prison for scamming US victims out of millions of dollars

ldquoSince 2013 American taxpayers have been subjected to unprecedented attempts to fraudulently obtain money by individ-uals utilizing Indian call centers to imper-sonate IRS employees and scam Ameri-can taxpayersrdquo said J Russell George the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)

According to admissions in his plea agreement Patel and his co-conspirators perpetrated a complex scheme in which employees from call centers in Ahmed-abad India impersonated officials from the IRS and US Citizenship and Immi-gration Services (USCIS) and engaged in other telephone call scams designed to defraud victims throughout the United States US victims were threatened with arrest imprisonment fines or deportation if they did not pay alleged monies owed to the government Those who fell victim were instructed how to provide payment including by purchasing general purpose reloadable (GPR) cards or wiring money Upon payment the call centers would im-

mediately turn to a network of ldquorunnersrdquo based in the United States to liquidate and launder the fraudulently obtained funds

A co-defendant described Patel as ldquothe top person in India and the boss for whom most of the other defendants workedrdquo and the owner of multiple call centers Another co-defendant stated that Patel was arrested in India in 2016 but then paid a bribe and was released Addi-tionally Patel admitted that a reasonably foreseeable loss of more than $25 million

but less than $65 million was attribut-able to him based on the governmentrsquos evidence against him

Patel was prosecuted in the United States after being extradited from Singa-pore in April 2019 to face charges in this large-scale telefraud and money launder-ing scheme Singapore authorities appre-hended Patel at the request of the United States pursuant to a provisional arrest warrant in September 2018 after Patel flew there from India

WASHINGTON DC - Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai who oversaw the repeal of landmark US net neutrality rules and a series of key spectrum auctions to address growing wireless needs said he plans to leave the commission on Jan 20

Pairsquos departure will come the same day President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office Under

Pai the FCC voted 3-2 in 2017 to repeal the Obama administra-tionrsquos 2015 net neutrality rules barring internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking or slowing internet content or offering paid ldquofast lanesrdquo

The FCC voted in October to maintain the repeal ldquoIt is pa-tently obvious to all but the most devoted members of the net neu-trality cult that the case against the (net neutrality repeal) was a shamrdquo Pai said in October

FCC chairman Ajit Pai plans to step down Democrats are likely to attempt

to reinstate the 2015 rules when they take control of the FCC and argue they are crucial to main-taining an open internet

Pai who was tapped by Presi-dent Donald Trump to lead the agency in January 2017 had said the FCC needed to take a ldquoweed whackerrdquo to unneeded rules He oversaw the repeal of numerous prior regulations

Trump has pressed the FCC to adopt new rules to limit the legal

protections of social media com-panies like Twitter

Pai said in October his agency would move forward to set new rules to clarify the meaning of a key legal protection for social media companies but took no for-mal action

The Senate Commerce Com-mittee is set to vote on the nomi-nation of Nathan Simington a senior administration official to a seat on the FCC after Trump withdrew the nomination of FCC Commissioner Mike OrsquoRielly for another term after he made statements questioning the FCCrsquos

authority to move ahead with new social media regulations

In October 2017 Pai rejected Trumprsquos tweet the FCC could challenge the license of Comcast Corprsquos NBC over stories Trump asserted were not true

Pai convinced hundreds of internet providers to agree for months not to cancel service for customers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic

Pai also backed the $26 bil-lion tie-up of Sprint Corp and T-Mobile US after the companies agreed to deploy a next genera-tion 5G network

On its offi cial Twitter account the Indian Air Force (IAF) re-sponded ldquoThe IAF uniform in this video is inaccurately donned and the language used is inappropriate This does not

conform to the behavioural norms of those in the Armed Forces of India The related scenes need to be withdrawnrdquo

In separate tweets both Ka-poor and Netfl ix India said the fi lm did not intend to dis-respect the Indian Air Force ldquoI truly apologise for unin-tentionally hurting anyonersquos sentimentsrdquo Kapoor said in a video message on his Twitter

BHUBANESWAR - Indian authorities said on Tuesday they found traces of lead and nickel particles in blood samples after hundreds of people were hospi-talised due to an unknown illness in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh

Teams of doctors including those from New Delhirsquos premier All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are investigat-ing the death of one person and hospitalisation of more than 400 in the past few days

Andhra Pradeshrsquos state govern-ment said on Tuesday the AIIMS

team had found traces of lead and nickel in their samples while a second hospital is also running similar tests

The illness has infected more than 300 children with most of them suffering from dizzi-ness fainting spells headaches and vomiting They have tested negative for COVID-19

High levels of lead in the bloodstream can impair develop-ment of brains nervous systems and vital organs such as heart and lungs

Earlier on Tuesday federal law-maker GVL Narasimha Rao who is from the state said on Twitter that he had spoken with govern-ment medical experts and that the

ldquomost likely cause is poisonous organochlorine substancesrdquo

ldquoIt is one of the possibilitiesrdquo said Geeta Prasadini a public health director in Andhra Pradesh state adding they were awaiting test reports to ascertain the cause

She said no new serious cases have come to light in the past 24 hours A 45-year-old man died over the weekend

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of protesting farmersrsquo unions have held several rounds of talks but have not made any progress in breaking the dead-

lock over the set of laws passed by parliament in September

After calculating the cost of cultivation the state-run Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) an-nounces Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for more than 22 commodities yearly to set a benchmark

Although every year the CACP announces MSPs for most crops the Food Corporation of India (FCI) the main state-run

grain procurement agency buys only rice and wheat at those pric-es due to a lack of storage and funds

After buying rice and wheat from farmers at MSPs the FCI sells the staples at highly sub-sidised prices to the poor The government compensates the FCI for its losses

Guaranteed prices offered by the FCI encourage farmers to pro-duce large quantities of rice and wheat Higher production puts

pressure on the FCI to buy extra supplies from farmers resulting in overflowing state warehouses and a ballooning subsidy bill that often pushes up the budget deficit

Despite sitting on massive mounds of rice and wheat the FCI finds it challenging to export as the annual rise in MSPs and its own storage costs make FCIrsquos rice and wheat more expen-sive than world prices making overseas sales uneconomic

NBSA directs three news channels to air

In a big win for actress Rakul Preet Singh the News Broad-casting Standards Authority (NBSA) has directed Zee News Zee 24 Tas and Zee Hindustan to air an apology on December 17 for their ldquovilifying reports link-ing her to drugs and SSR caserdquo In September when Singh was summoned by the Narcot-ics Control Bureau (NCB) she moved Delhi HC seeking direc-tion to stop media reports link-ing her with the drugs case call-ing them defamatory

Itrsquos been eight months since

the last big Hindi film Angrezi Medium hit screens Once the lockdown kicked in films be-gan to go online even the ones starring A-listers But produc-ers of some small films decided to wait for cinemas to reopen Last month cinemas finally got the go-ahead in most parts of the country while on November 5 the prime state of Maharashtra too gave its nod This prompted Zee Studios to release Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari on Diwali on the big screen The trailer of the film has been impressive and carries a good vibe So does Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari manage to en-tertain and give viewers a good time Or does it falter Letrsquos analyse

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is the story of a feud between a wedding detective and a dairy owner The year is 1995 Suraj Singh Dhillon (Diljit Dosanjh) is a single guy from Mumbai and the heir of Jai Mata Rani Doodh Bhandar He lives with his fa-ther Gurnaam Dhillon (Manoj Pahwa) mother Yeshodha Dhil-lon (Seema Pahwa) and sister Guddi (Vanshika Sharma) His parents are looking for a right match but their efforts are futile

Surajs sidekick Sukhi (Manuj Sharma) tells him to be cool and a bad boy and that it would help attract girls Suraj likes the idea and as part of his stint as a cool bad boy he breaks the traf-fic signal and consumes alcohol in front of a girlrsquos college Mean-while his parents find a match for him An excited Suraj goes to the girlrsquos house with his par-ents But the girlrsquos parents refuse their proposal because they had the pictures of Suraj while he was in his bad boy avatar Suraj is dejected and is dying to know who clicked his pictures after all After cajoling the Pandit Dubey ji (Neeraj Sood) he gets to know that itrsquos none other than Madhu Mangal Rane (Manoj Bajpayee) a wedding detective He believes itrsquos his job to find flaws in the to-be grooms and thus save the lives of gullible girls and their families Suraj wants revenge but doesnrsquot know how He then realizes that Mangal has a sis-ter Tulshi Rane (Fatima Sana Shaikh) He decides to fake a relationship with her in order to get back at Mangal However he falls for her in real He expresses his love to Tulshi She however is hiding a shocking secret about her life and passion This secret gives Suraj the much needed op-portunity to damage Mangals reputation At the same time it can also dent his marriage pros-pects with Tulshi What happens next forms the rest of the film

Shokhi Banerjees story is very interesting and entertaining One might feel that the makers revealed almost the whole plot in the trailer But thatrsquos not the case as the film has a lot more to of-fer Rohan Shankars screenplay is entertaining for most parts The various twists and dramatic points are well fleshed out How-ever a few rough edges remain Also the humour quotient is lim-ited Rohan Shankars dialogues are hilarious and a few of them are sure to induce claps

Abhishek Sharmas direction is neat He deserves brownie

points for keeping the mood of the film light from start to finish The film never gets too heavy even in no-nonsense situations Also the film is replete with some very quirky characters and he makes good use of them to add to the fun Moreover the film cel-ebrates the Marathi culture and the middle-class lifestyle of the city It fondly also reminds one of the simple slice-of-life films made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee On the flip-side some of the portions of the first half arenrsquot upto the mark es-pecially the lsquoBad Boyrsquo sequence A few developments are hard to digest especially the track of the professor deciding not to take any action against his wife despite the latter cheating on him Also the manner in which Madhu plans the breaking off the engagement ceremony of his sister is a bit too much Mangalrsquos change of heart

in the climax also comes across as very unconvincing Thank-fully the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge [1995] inspired climax makes up for it

Anshuman Mahaleys cin-ematography is first-rate Rajat Poddars production design is authentic and reminds one of the 90s Vijay Gangulys choreogra-phy is appealing in Basanti Jia Bhagia and Mallika Chauhans costumes are realistic for all the characters Fatemarsquos clothes however donrsquot seem to be of 1995 but nevertheless looks glamorous Rameshwar Bhagats editing is fair

On the whole Suraj Pe Man-gal Bhari is a decent entertain-er and a clean family film that works because of its plot the depiction of the mid-90s era and the performances

IBM said last Thursday that the campaign was a sign that digital spies are turning their attention to the complex logistical work in-volved in inoculating the worldrsquos population against the novel coronavirus although some out-side experts questioned whether that was the hackersrsquo focus

In a blog post here published last Thursday IBM said it had uncovered ldquoa global phishing campaignrdquo focused on organi-zations associated with the CO-VID-19 vaccine ldquocold chainrdquo - the process needed to keep vaccine doses at extremely cold temperatures as they travel from manufacturers to peoplersquos arms

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency reposted the report warning here members of Operation Warp Speed - the US governmentrsquos

Other cybsecurity experts expressed some skepticism however of IBMrsquos fi ndings

Telemarketing fraudster pleads guiltyPROVIDENCE RI - An Indian

national last week admitted to a federal judge in Providence that he participated in a wide-ranging conspiracy based in India to de-fraud United States citizens pri-marily seniors by telling victims that malware had been detected on their computers and based on that falsehood induced the vic-tims to direct money to him and his co-conspirators as payment for purported computer protection services that were not needed or ever provided

The conspirators in fact did not detect malware on victimsrsquo computers and accepted payment without providing any protection services

Himanshu Asri 33 of Delhi In-dia admitted that he had 325 call-ers routed to call centers in India where call center operators falsely reasserted to victims that malware had been detected on their com-puters and offered the victims purported computer protection services in exchange for payment The purpose of the false assertions was to induce people into routing money to the fraudsters

According to information pre-sented to the court from as far back as January 2015 through January 2020 Asri and others working together collected in

total approximately $940995 from victims through their fraud and attempted to collect between $1500000 and $3000000 The actual loss was less than the in-tended loss because some of those who were targeted by Asri and his coconspirators did not send any funds to the fraudsters

According to information pre-sented to the court the govern-ment and the defendant agree that many of Asrirsquos victims were vulnerable to fraud schemes due to age or infirmity and the parties agree that the scheme pursued by Asri and his coconspirators were structured to exploit such persons specifically persons over the age of 65

California serial arson suspect arrested after garage doors car set on fire

FREMONT CA - Police in Fremont on Tuesday morning ar-rested a serial arson suspect who allegedly tried to light the ga-rage doors of multiple residenc-es on fire after he ignited a car according to authorities

Detectives arrested 44-year-old Fremont resident Roshan Patel after a series of four garage door fires over the past week De-tectives conducted surveillance on Patel and observed him set a vehicle on fire early this morn-ing He was arrested as he ran back to his vehicle

According to a news release undercover detectives were con-

ducting surveillance for Patel who was suspected of being in-volved in at least four residen-tial garage door fires that had happened since December 1st

Fremont officers located pri-vate residential camera footage that provided a general descrip-tion of the suspect vehicle De-tectives then matched that foot-age to the Community Camera network which then provided a license plate for the suspect ve-hicle

Detectives were surveilling Patel early Tuesday morning when he led them to the same house he had targeted on Hoyt

Street at approximately 245 am Detectives saw Patel get out of his vehicle and pour a liquid on a parked vehicle

Police detectives tried to con-tact Patel before he could ignite the vehicle but he was able to set the vehicle on fire Authorities were able to arrest the suspect as he ran back to his vehicle and extinguished the car fire with a nearby garden hose

Patel was arrested on arson charges and booked at the Fre-mont City Jail Detectives de-termined that Patel knew at least one of the residents that he had targeted in his arson attacks

Bangladeshi husband and wife plead guilty to conspiring to provide material support to ISIS

PHILADELPHIA PA - United States Attorney William M Mc-Swain and Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C Demers announced that Shahidul Gaffar 40 and Nabi-la Khan 35 both residents of Pennsylvania pleaded guilty last month to conspiracy to provide material support and resources to ISIS a designated Foreign Ter-rorist Organization

Pfi zer Inc cleared the next hurdle in the race to get its COVID-19 vaccine ap-proved for emergency use on Tuesday after the US Food and Drug Administra-tion (FDA) released documents that raised no new issues about its safety or effi cacy

Pfi zer and German partner BioNTech SE said last month their coronavirus vac-cinersquos two-dose regimen was 95 eff ec-tive against COVID-19 and had no ma-jor safety issues and asked the FDA for emergency use authorization

The vaccinersquos effi cacy and safety data met its expectations for emergency use authorization FDA staff said in docu-ments released ahead of a Thursday meet-ing of outside experts to the FDA who will discuss whether to recommend the Pfi zer

shot for people aged 16 and olderJeff eries analyst Michael Yee said in

research note the documents were ldquovery simple and straightforward which we think will lead to approval imminentlyrdquo

The agency typically follows the rec-ommendations of its advisory panels but is not required to do so It is not clear how many days or weeks the FDA will take to make a decision but states are prepping for vaccine deliveries in mid-December

The documents were released on the day Britons began getting the Pfi zerBi-oNTech vaccine the worldrsquos fi rst recipi-ents outside of clinical trials

FDA staff also said that the trial which was designed to look at eff ectiveness against COVID-19 did not produce data to answer the question of if it also stopped infection

In terms of safety the FDA staff said there was currently insuffi cient data to make conclusions about the safety of the vaccine in people below 16 years of age pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems

Inoculation against the disease caused by the novel coronavirus is key to safely reopening large parts of the economy and reduc-ing the risks of illness at crowd-ed meatpacking plants factories and warehouses

But before one needle has en-tered the arm of an American

worker confusion has broken out over who exactly is consid-ered essential during a pandemic

With initial vaccine doses limited and strong federal guid-ance lacking it has fallen to US states to determine who will be first in line to receive a vaccine and who will have to wait well into next year

State vaccine distribution plans reviewed by Reuters showed broad discrepancies over who would be considered essential with some states clearly outlin-ing specific worker groups and

others not providing any clarityGenerally states have broad

discretion when it comes to vac-cine distribution and policy and are able to issue vaccination mandates for their residents

Many states have so far fol-lowed federal guidance to give meat and food processing indus-try workers space in the line but some are slowly moving away said Mark Lauritsen a former hog slaughter worker who now advocates on behalf of about

OAKLAND - California on Monday announced an app to help people track their exposure to the coronavirus becoming the big-gest US state to take advantage of new technology from smart-phone software makers Apple Inc and Alphabet Incrsquos Google

Beginning on Thursday people in California can activate the ex-posure notifications tool from the settings menu on iPhones or by downloading the CA Notify App in the Google Play store on Android devices

The apps enable Bluetooth sig-nals between devices to determine

when they are in close proximity and the apps then anonymously alert users when a recent contact later tests positive At least 6 mil-lion people in the United States have tried the system in recent months across the 21 states and two territories that made apps available before California Colo-rado and New York are among other states with apps

Public health experts say adop-tion has lagged because of tech-nical shortcomings in the earliest apps privacy concerns and dis-missive attitudes toward taking precautions to avoid the virus

But California officials hope the app will be adopted quickly in a state that is home to many tech workers

The statersquos two most densely inhabited regions and its agri-cultural breadbasket went under stay-at-home orders in the last couple of days as the pandem-ic strains hospitals in the most populous US state

CA Notify had been tested on state university campuses since September The University of California San Diego will contin-ue to oversee the system and staff a user support phone hotline

LONDON - An Indian school-teacher has been awarded the 2020 Global Teacher Prize -- and has vowed to give half of the $1 million prize money to the runners-up

The award which is run by the Varkey Foundation in partner-ship with UNESCO celebrates ldquoexceptionalrdquo teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to their profession

Ranjitsinh Disale a teacher at Zilla Parishad Primary School in the village of Paritewadi in

the western Indian state of Ma-harashtra was chosen as winner from more than 12000 nomina-tions and applications from over 140 countries around the world

The award recognized his ef-forts to promote girlsrsquo education at the school whose pupils are mostly from tribal communities

The Global Teacher Prize said he learned the local language of the village in order to translate class textbooks into his pupilsrsquo mother tongue

He also created unique QR

codes on the textbooks to give students access to audio poems video lectures stories and assign-ments greatly improving school attendance His QR technology is now being rolled out more widely across India

The British actor and TV host Stephen Fry announced Disale as the winner at a virtual ceremony broadcast from the Natural His-

tory Museum in London last Thursday

Rather than keeping all his winnings Disale told Fry in an interview that he would share the prize with the other nine finalists giving them $55000 each -- the first time anyone has done so in the awardrsquos six-year history

BHOPAL - Protesters in the cen-tral Indian city of Bhopal formed a human chain last Thursday to de-mand justice for people suffering cancer blindness respiratory im-mune and neurological problems from the worldrsquos worst industrial disaster 36 years ago

In the early hours of December 3 1984 methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide factory owned by American Union Car-bide Corporation More than half a million people were poisoned that night and the official death toll exceeded 5000

Thousands of survivors have said they their children and grandchildren are struggling with chronic health problems as a

result of the leak and toxic waste left behind and face hefty medical bills at a time when the pandemic is making their health even more fragile

Dow Chemical which now owns Union Carbide has denied liability saying it bought the com-pany a decade after Union Carbide settled its liabilities to the Indian government in 1989 by paying $470 million

Protesters say the government still underestimates the number of victims and compensation did not go to many who needed it

ldquoStop giving us false prom-ises have some shamerdquo pro-testers shouted as they demanded

financial helpLocal rights group say vic-

tims of the Bhopal gas trag-edy are more vulnerable to the coronavirus than other people

ldquoToday we have official docu-ments to show that the death rate of gas victims due to COVID-19 is 65 times higher than those who were not exposedrdquo said Rachna Dhingra an activist who has worked with survivors of the tragedy
