INTRODUCTION This event was the brainchild of women of the Oltome Women’s group as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Funding came to an end and new donors became interested in following up on the next stages. These women told a new donor that they would be very interested in adult education, but said they first wanted their children to achieve good education and asked the donor to support efforts to improve the Enkijape Primary School at Imbirikani center where their children studied. A survey of the school was conducted between 24th February and 6th March by students from Princeton University and Columbia University with Kenyan students as part of their undergraduate field course led by Dr. Paula Kahumbu. Students, parents and teachers were interviewed as well as County education officials. The findings revealed that the Enkijape Primary School was formerly one of the top schools in the Kajiado County; it won local and national competitions in academia, music, drama and sports. The school, located in the middle of elephant territory, which is the home and movement corridor of the world famous Amboseli elephants, is also close to a main road and is next to the Imbirikani center. The school feeding program was stopped in 2006 and children were eating one meal per day comprising nearly 100 percent carbohydrate. Most of the 750 students are from pastoral families while walking to school often interact with wildlife, mostly negatively. It is not surprising then that they have little affection for wild animals. This must change if the future of the wildlife in this ecosystem is to be secured. We believe that the school can become the source of that positive change in the community and that the association with wildlife will be a powerful demonstration of the value of wildlife and reason to protect it. The report was shared with the school Board of Management (BOM) in March. The Board agreed to explore the possibilities and wanted the input of parents, teachers, students and members of the community as well as other stakeholders. With some donations already being offered, time was essential so it was agreed that the event would follow a one-day Open Space Technology format. The BOM agreed to a theme for the meeting “How can we together make Enkijape Primary School a Center of Excellence in Innovative Education to create a Self-reliant and Sustainable Community”. WildlifeDirect applied funds from the Perfect World Foundation and invited experts from Public Service Works (UK) who had conducted Open Space events in Kenya before to assist. The date of 1st April was chosen for the event as this was the last date before the Easter holidays began. We are all moved and inspired by the outcome of the day, which not only illustrated profound concern and willingness of the community to build the school, but also confirms that the priorities of the school are generally agreed by this community.

4

Top priorities The top priorities identified by both children and parents were

1. Reliable feeding program (Parents top priority) 2. ICT center 3. Dormitories 4. Vocational center 5. Reliable source of water 6. Motivated teachers 7. School Bus (This was the students top priority) 8. Playground and sports and co-curriculum

5

Message from Enkijape Board of Management The main purpose of the Open Space meeting was to capture the views of the community to better the school. We do appreciate the tremendous response from parents, our invited guests, leadership of the school (Board and PTA), students and the general turn out of over 700 people. We feel trusted as a board that the community took the meeting so seriously for which we are thankful that the meeting was successful and all ideas were captured, many of which were in the best interest of the school and public. As a Board we are committed to taking this school to greater heights by implementing the best ideas and wishes of the public as reflected in that meeting. This will be done within the guidelines of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology. In that Open Space meeting, we agreed as a community that we will be resourceful by contributing what we can in terms of cash, materials, food, volunteering services and manual work, and land to expand the school. We will enlist the support of our alumni and other friends, donors and partners and we commit to fully cooperating with those who seek to help us to implement the actions proposed during this meeting. We further appeal to friends, partners, donors to give a helping hand to implement the wishes of the community with regards to making Enkijape Primary School a center of excellence to transform the school through innovative education. A detailed project plan will be developed in line with the agreed priority areas for action.

6

What happened on the day Before the event the estimated number of children, young people, Maasai parents, community, chiefs, teachers, the school board, government officials and other stakeholders was 300. In fact 750 adults and children attended this extraordinary one-day Open Space event, which was conducted primarily in Maa, the oral language spoken by the Maasai community and English. Two sign language interpreters supported 25 children who are profoundly deaf and mute. The people present set the agenda for the day, organised themselves into discussion groups, scribes wrote down main topics of the discussion and best ideas. Many ideas were repeated in each group so this report has grouped them together under one topic heading to make it clearer to read. At the end of the day, top priorities for action were identified by dot democracy.

Below are brief reports from each topic area in order of priority

7

Topic 1: School Bus

Main topics of the discussion - Verbal discussion not recorded

What were the best ideas for action? - Acquisition of school bus used by the students and when not in use, can be leased

to others in the community to earn income.

8

9

Topic 2: Feeding Programme

Main topics of the discussion - Hunger is a hindrance to concentration in school esp. afternoon - Sustainability of food…

o Plant trees, have nursery and sell saplings o Extra source of water is important (collect water from gutters on the roof,

harvest rain with underground storage). - Balanced diet (fruit, vegetable, meats, etc.) - Advantage of feeding… Retention and make’s learners healthy - Improves performance - Most children walk long distances to return home meals - The school to have its own Shamba for food - We have enough land, but need to put enough water - Management of Shamba to be done by good people that make production. - The school can look at Shamba outside the school compound. - Drilling water can be more dependable - Having a Shamba within the compound can give people more practice on agriculture - Green house and drip irrigation can minimise use of water. - Biogas, introduction – reduce bill for firewood. - Feeding programme - Farming - Borehole + gutter to collect from the roofs - Poultry & Feeding Programme - Farming - Poultry & Rabbits Keeping

10

- Keeping Cattle - Enough supply of water - Sustainable Feeding Programme: - Plant Trees, have nursery & sell the saplings - Extra source of water is important (boreholes, gutters on roofs for rain harvesting –

underground storage) - To sustain feeding programme the farm needs water (borehole) - Can keep rabbits, poultry that can be sold to snake parks & hotels; white meat good

for health - Use dung to produce biogas (for power & manure for farm) - School Farming: Members supported the idea of farming food crops in the school

shamba. This will ease the challenge of children’s feeling hungry and thus affect their performance. This will also build on their health and eventually building their mental performance.

- Children wake up early and go to school hungry - Parents can contribute for food in the school through donations - Best Solution: Farming in school shamba - Lobby through local authority - Having adequate school farm - Drilling a bore hole - Government and well wishers - School project – cattle, chicken, school bus.

11

What were the best ideas for action? - Borehole: Water is a challenge around the school, a borehole will therefore provide

water needed for farming - Pipeline Water: A government owned water pipeline that runs to Nairobi passes close

to the school. Members proposed that they lobby to the local authority to give the school water through a flat rate (no charges) in order to support the farming in the school.

- To further support the farm, members proposed that they fundraise among themselves to raise funds to buy food for the students. An Amount of (100ksh) hundred shillings was proposed to pay for the water bill.

- Dairy farming and poultry: To generate more funds to support the feeding programme, members proposed economic generative initiatives for the school. The dairy farm will provide milk for the kids for tea in order to further build their nutrition. The milk and eggs from the poultry and dairy farming will also be sold to generate funds to buy food and further the feeding programme.

- Manure and fertilizers: Members proposed that cow dung from their homes will provide fertilizer for the farm. This will boost the yield of the farm. Moreover, the cow dung can be sold to farmers who want local manure and can also support biogas in the school.

- Parents to support by providing manure - Provide labour - Feeding programmes – Parents will help with the cooking of food for their children - Setting up a kitchen garden for vegetables to supply children with balanced diet

12
