MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome Home!On behalf of the University of Dubuque community, I want to welcome each of you back to campus for Homecoming 2021. We are so glad you are here – either in person or virtually. Homecoming truly is a time of rekindling relationships, reminiscing, and reconnecting with your University. You will discover that we are a University that continues to grow through new construction and renovations, programmatic complexity, reputation, and in our commitment to shaping lives of exceptional ability, worth, and purpose.

Yet, with all that is new, the soul of the University, rooted in our Mission, remains the same as it has been since our founding in 1852.

We are so very grateful for the many blessings that we have received throughout our history, and, in particular, for those that have come to UD over the last two decades. It is our hope that your presence on campus will renew and refresh you – indeed be a blessing for you. How great it will be for all of us to gather again!

With gratitude for each of you and for the difference that you make every day with your families, in your communities, and in your life’s calling.

Rev. Jeffrey F. Bullock, PhDPresident of the University

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI OFFICE

It is our pleasure to welcome you back to your campus home – we have missed you! Homecoming is a uniquely special time to see lifelong friends and to make new ones during this exciting weekend. Within this program, you will find a wonderful array of events that are opportunities to be together with other Spartans. I encourage you to take part in as many events as possible, either in person or virtually. No matter where we are, our Spartan Spirit is alive and well!

We hope that you will have the opportunity to reconnect with fellow classmates and friends at our fourth annual Spartan Fest! I invite you to take a few moments to talk with current students, ask them about their experiences and plans for the future, and share with them some words of wisdom.

Many of this weekend’s events, including the Campus Tours, Alumni Reunion Celebration, Spartan Fest Tailgate, Football Game, and the Spartan Nation Send-Off, provide the important opportunity for all of us to reconnect and cherish this place we all call home. Through other events we will remember Spartans who are no longer with us but have made a lasting impression on the campus community, including the Naming & Open House celebrating the Judge James L. Martin (C’67) Multicultural Student Center and the Jim Martin Golf Studio as well as the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center Open House and Presentation of Scholarships. As we gather together in celebration, there is no doubt that we are forever Spartans!

WELCOME HOME, SPARTAN NATION!

INVEST IN THE SERGEANT JEFFREY B. DODGE ANDSTAFF SERGEANT RONALD R. SAGERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

As endowed scholarships, these will be given in perpetuity to current UD students – a fitting way to ensure that Jeff and Ron’s legacies are forever part of UD history.

Investing in Student Veterans- GI Bill benefits don’t cover the entire cost of education for some students. Annual Student

Veteran Scholarships can help bridge that gap. Many choose to invest monthly in this effort.- Endowed scholarship investments can also be made in the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge

Scholarship or Staff Sergeant Ronald R. Sagers Memorial Scholarship.- Investments can also be made to the Veterans Emergency Relief Fund. This fund provides

immediate financial relief for student veterans and their families in the case of financial burdens that may impact students continuing their education. This fund has been instrumental in assisting UD student veterans in financial crisis. Cases may include emergency automobile repairs, home furnace repair, medical bills, prescription payments, and assistance with rental costs.

HOW TO INVEST:ONLINE: www.investdbq.comON-CAMPUS: cash, check, credit cardOTHER: e.g. donor advised fund, stocks/securities transfer, matching gifts, pledge

SERGEANT JEFFREY B. DODGE VETERANS CENTER UPDATE - OCTOBER 2021Rick Ernst (CSM, USA, Ret.)Director of the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center

Here at the University of Dubuque Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center we constantly strive to improve the educational experience for our student veterans and their families each year. As a result of the efforts and generosity of our investors, we are happy to report the following.

- We currently serve over 150 military or veteran related students.- We are honored to receive a No. 1 ranking as a private university offering an undergraduate through doctorate

degree from VIQTORY out of 625 schools surveyed for school year 2021-2022. What makes this so significant is that the results were based upon objective data measurements from Veterans Administration, Department of Defense directives, as well as federal and state Education Department metrics and compiled by the firm of (EY) Ernst and Young. In addition, we were ranked No. 9 for our support of military/veteran spouses by the same survey.

Fun Facts:- The median age of a student veteran is 31 and a traditional student is 21.- The median GPA for a student veteran is 3.69 and for a traditional student is 3.45.- We have initiated a new “Salute to Service” special tuition rate of $250.00 per credit hour for all of our undergraduate

and graduate LIFE – Learning Institute for Fulfillment and Engagement education programs for all active duty, reserve service men and women, veterans, and their spouses.

- Initiated new programing and partnerships with area museums with interviews of Vietnam Veterans for an upcoming Vietnam exhibit.

- The veterans center was instrumental in bringing RISE ABOVE: Tuskegee Airmen Traveling Outdoor Exhibit to campus to highlight the stellar achievements of the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII while displaying incredible courage in overcoming extreme adversity.

- The University of Dubuque strives to support our student veterans from the initial contact with our admission and financial aid team, through tailored individual degree plans with our academic advisors, a low student to faculty ratio, and the veteran specific guidance and mentorship provided in the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center.

The University’s commitment to service members and veterans dates back to World War II with the Navy’s V5/V12 programs and continues to the present day with a vibrant US Army ROTC program and Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center. Established in spring 2014, the veterans center serves veterans by offering support and assistance in navigating the transition to civilian life and the college environment as well as providing relationships that encourage intellectual, spiritual, and moral development and a zeal for lifelong learning and service.

UD recognizes the need to support all who have served our country in the armed forces. The veterans center seeks to be a bridge between the ethos and values learned serving in the military to the UD educational experience as they relate to future careers and continued civilian service to our nation.

JUDGE JAMES L. MARTIN MULTICULTURAL STUDENT CENTER & JIM MARTIN GOLF STUDIO

“WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO DO IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD NEVER FAIL?”

This was a favorite quote of Jim Martin’s. So much so that a paperweight with these words was front and center on his desk.

As you reflect on his life, you realize that he exemplifies those words.

Jim Martin made an impact at the University of Dubuque both as a student and most recently as an active alumnus. A proud graduate of the UD Class of 1967, Jim was a member of the Phi-O fraternity and an athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball during his time as a student. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees and could be found in the stands cheering on the Spartans at most UD football and basketball games, along with his beloved spouse, Deb.

In addition to his involvement with UD, Jim was a true servant leader and chose to serve with many groups and organizations including the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Judicial Council, the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation, Board of Attorneys Professional Responsibility, Badger Basketball Boosters, and the Southwest Wisconsin Officials Association. In addition, he served on the Board of Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, the Board of the Wisconsin Senior Golf Association, and as a Commissioner of the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District.

His professional accomplishments include serving as an assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After graduation from law school at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977, Jim began working as an assistant attorney for the City of Madison. In 2002, he was named attorney. In 2003, Jim was named as a city circuit court judge in Dane County, Wisconsin, just the second African-American to be appointed to the bench. Jim served in that position until July 2009 when he retired.

In his 2016 Alumnus of Distinction acceptance remarks, Jim recalled his time as a student saying, “UD gave me a chance to be the first in my family to go to college. It was a game changer in my life’s trajectory.”

The Judge James L. Martin (C’67) Multicultural Student Center will be a place for all students as well as programming, events, and fellowship. The Jim Martin Golf Studio, given by his spouse, Deb, is a state-of-the-art facility for the growth and development of our men’s and women’s golf programs. Golf was a passion of Jim’s and one of his proudest accomplishments was his completion of 18 holes in all 50 states.

Jim passed away after a brief illness on June 29, 2019, but today we celebrate Jim’s legacy at the University he loved. His story will continue to be shared with students who will walk in his footsteps on our campus.

Robert “Bob” Nagel graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1951 with a major in history that included an emphasis on all the various Social Sciences. While at UD, Bob’s involvements included Mu Sigma Beta fraternity, Social Science Club, Student Council officer, Band, Theater and Debate. After graduation he went on to the University of Colorado School of Law, earning a Juris Doctor degree.

For the first couple years after law school, Bob was an associate at the Denver law firm Henry and Adams. Wanting to branch out, he worked for a time as a sole practitioner before forming, along with two friends and fellow CU

graduates, the firm named Law, Nagel and Clark. During a leave of absence from his firm, Bob was appointed and served as an Assistant Colorado Attorney General where he represented various state departments and agencies and from which he later moved on to become Chief Counsel to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. After returning to his firm, for several years Bob’s primary, but not exclusive, legal activity involved a co-lead role in the financing, construction, leasing and operation of several large regional indoor shopping malls. He then had the opportunity to become an early participant in the development of Cable Television as a means of program delivery and in the creation and operation of numerous Cable Television systems. He remained mostly involved in Cable Television until his retirement in 1997. Having completed a career as a practicing lawyer, one that was varied, enjoyable and rewarding, Bob considers that one of his personal accomplishments has been the gaining and maintenance of the respect of his fellow lawyers (and hopefully of the general public) during a long and often strenuous legal career.

Bob also served on and/or supported various Denver and Colorado area charitable and public organizations, including Mile High United Way and InnerCity Christian School.

Outside of work, Bob’s favorite activities included a lifetime of flying as a private pilot mostly for pleasure but sometimes for business, scuba diving with many friends, playing golf poorly, lengthy vacations in Mexico and Canada, and worldwide travel. He and Jane have had the good fortune of being able to travel to and enjoy large parts of all the continents.

Bob and Jane have been married for 66 years. They reside in the Denver, Colorado area. Together they have three adult children (Andrew, Martha and Kurt) and are blessed with having ten great grandchildren. When asked, Bob said his most notable accomplishment has been making it to the age of 92 while still vertical.

He previously served as the Columbus Regional Airport Authority’s chief strategy officer and vice president of human resources, government affairs, and strategy. Before that, he was executive director of airports for the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority, which includes Fort Wayne International Airport and Smith Field Airport, both in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This year, the University of Dubuque family is honored to recognize UD health care providers for their strength, courage, and service to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic and through the work they do each day.

Every day we have the privilege to hear how University graduates are making a difference, providing care, and being a source of comfort, a confidant, and even a friend to those in need. Through their daily work, they live out the Mission of the University of Dubuque, practicing Christian love and providing service to both the church and the world.
