ARE YOU A CHEF?BAKER? RESTAURANT OWNER?

REALLY GOOD COOK?!

Two years ago, we built a free-standing commercial kitchen adjacent to a half-acre organic garden for cabin groups to go to cooking school at Camp Barney! In past summers, Guest Chefs like Alon Balshan of Alon’s Bakery, Jenny Levison of Souper Jenny’s, Matt Friedman of Wing Zone, Robert Adler of Ernie’s BBQ in Charlotte, Masha Hleap of Fuego Mundo Restaurant, Glen Gurevitch of Sweet Melissa’s Restaurant, Tracey Holzer, an owner of Mellow Mushroom Pizza, Brad Rubenstein of the Flying Biscuit, Julie & David Abes of Here to Serve Restaurants, Giuliano & Lael Hazan, Cookbook and Television Chefs, Barbara Vahaba, Egyptian Chef, and many others have been Guest Chefs at Camp Barney!

If you would like to come up as a guest chef, perhaps once a week, once a session or once a summer, please email me soon. And yes, we’re still compiling guest chef recipes (and even those submitted by CBM parents) for an eventual Camp Barney Cookbook!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD!It’s true, we want kids to love the food at Camp Barney each summer! Not the taste of mass-produced institutional food, not the expectation of average school food, and not even the memory of last summer’s food at CBM!

For 2015, we’re working to create a significantly healthier menu and yummier options, with less sugar, preservatives, fried food, and excessive desserts. Sure, kids are burning way more calories at camp then they are during a typical day the other 11 months of the year, but we can reduce the abundance and infuse more nutritious opportunities and provide the unexpectedly delicious foods everyone will love to eat!

New menus are being developed for meals in our dining hall, and awesome new creations will be sautéed and baked by guest chefs in our cooking school. Outdoor cooking activities will include healthier ingredients, and canteen snacks will still offer BarneyBars (one day a week) with new tasty items replacing other candy bars, and yes, “milk line” will remain (in moderation!). If you or your kids have suggestions for awesome (kosher) meals, email us the recipes!

ANYONE TAKING MEDSAT CAMP IN 2015?

Dear Parents, We have our awesome Marcus Health Center at Camp Barney AND we have a system for your child to take medications while they’re at camp, too. Our goal is the same as yours: to administer medications in the safest, most efficient manner and to get your child back “in the game” as quickly as possible. Therefore, we are requiring that all medications in pill form (either prescription or over the counter) that are to be given on a daily basis be packaged in “bingo cards”: unit dose packaging. Essentially, daily bubble-wrapped meds. We have intensely researched and developed several options for you. These options are cost-effective and convenient so you don’t have to worry while your child is at CBM. To avoid being charged a packaging fee, please provide your child’s medications per our protocol. We’ll email you precise information next month. Nearly 80% of families did the bubble-wrapped meds in 2014. We’re going for 100% in 2015! On behalf of the 22 professionals on the 2015 Medical Team at Camp Barney, we look forward to caring for your child(ren) this coming summer!

6 Camp Barney Medintz Newsletter • Winter, 2015

Stop obsessing! Seriously, we’ve been around a long time and we do a lot of training with our already sensitive staff to prepare for everything and everyone. Your child IS different and we’re excited about the opportunity to diminish their (and your) concerns, honor their uniqueness, experience new adventures, make great friendships and have the best summer of their life at Camp Barney this summer! You’ll get our Confidential Camper Questionnaire in late February. This is your opportunity to share your child(ren)’s story and you can call me afterwards to set up telephone or in-person time if you want to further chat. We will take care of every child and help them feel safe, connected, accomplished and happy!

DO YOU THINK YOUR CHILD IS DIFFERENT?

Does he not eat much at home?Is she taking daily medications?Does he have ADHD or have trouble with lots ofinstructions?Does she need help organizing her things? Is he really creative and wants activities which help express his talents? Is she going to struggle being away from her computer? Is he the class clown? Is she a teen and rather challenging these days at home and school? Is he especially sensitive to loud or obnoxious kids?Does she think about looking like everyone else?Is he worried about thunder or heights or horses? Is she really, really shy?Does he want to do lots of competitive or team sports and activities?Does she do really well academically but not so well socially? Is he dealing with family issues when he’s at camp?Is she always making sure everyone else is happy? Is he concerned with feeling or being safe?Is she sensitive to how her body looks? Is he nervous ‘cause he doesn’t know anyone else going? Is she modest and/or concerned about showering or changing clothes? Is he a leader, full of adventure, a rule-follower, an achiever, a good friend and a little concerned about which kids he’ll be with?

2015 CABIN GROUPINGSHOW DOES THAT WORK?

You probably know by now that there’s nothing we do that’s random, especially the way camper’s cabin groups are formed!

Only one person puts the cabin groups together, and that’s ME! No committee, no draft, no alphabetical order, no “eenie-meenie” methods! Why are we so compulsive about this? Because we have the same goal of creating the best opportunity to have the best experience. And most of the time, it works out quite well. We’re ready to respond if for any reason it doesn’t.

I read every Bunkmate Request on the Confidential Camper Questionnaire which you will complete next month. I look at cabin groupings from last summer and review if they were successful. I read lots of e-mail and visit with lots of families (before May 1st while we’re still in our Atlanta office) and I try to know as many kids as possible. I honor requests if both campers request each other, and I try to balance new and returning campers and those from Atlanta and other cities. I consider similar interests, personalities, and needs. (It does get tricky, of course, when someone requests one friend but not another person while the friend requests the other person…..did that make sense?!)

This same energy goes into determining which counselors will work best with which age groups, specific cabin groups and various teams of staff. We believe this attention to detail will again make a very big difference in 2015.

We are proud of the reputation “Our Summer Place” has established as a leader among Jewish overnight camps in North America. Quality program offerings and an extraordinary staff have continued to attract campers to our North Georgia mountain retreat for more than 50 summers; but, demands on our 50-year old camp’s infrastructure have exceeded its original capacity.

Thanks to so many past and current Camp Barney Medintz families, MJCCA leaders, supporters and members of so many communities throughout the United States, our “Framework for our Future” campaign ended very successfully this past fall having raised [confirming $$], which will continue to be invested back in Camp Barney. Major infrastructure projects are now underway (including a completely new camp septic system and new roofs), vastly renovated cabins and bathrooms are scheduled for 2016, and awesome program spaces will be continuously renovated or added to our beautiful 540 acre property in the North Georgia mountains.

As always, our goal is to provide the most meaningful, comfortable, and exciting experience at Camp Barney Medintz for every camper and family!

ANNUAL CAMPER REUNIONAT STARS & STRIKES WAS AWESOME!

More than 500 people of all ages and sessions came to our annual Winter Camper Reunion on Sunday, December 21st in Atlanta. It was so great to see families from throughout Georgia, as well as from Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Alabama.

We donated hundreds of canned foods to the Atlanta Food Bank - Todah Rabah! We bowled, played in the arcade, ate pizza and desserts, had raffle prize winners, saw our musical reunion slideshow, gave each camper a Reunion T-Shirt and BarneyBar, and schmoozed with each other and lots of staff who came into town to help out and be with campers. It is definitely fun to see campers between each summer at the annual Camp Barney Winter Reunion!
