HAND TOOLS

Learning Objective:By the end of this course, students will be able to:• Identify the specific hand tools• How to choose the right hand tools• How to use in proper way

WRENCHES

The jaws of open-end wrenches are placed at an angle in order to make it easier to work with the wrenches in close quarters, as it is frequently necessary to tighten or loosen a nut where there is very little space in which to swing a wrench. The procedure

Box-end Wrenches.-Some box-end wrenches have 6 inside faces, or notches, but most of them have 12 notches. There is little chance for a box-end wrench to slip off the nut, and it cannot spread on the nut and cause undue wear. Because the sides of the box opening are comparatively thin, the wrench is suitable for turning nuts that are hard to reach with an open-end wrench.

Tip: Quickly choose the wrench size

The nearest Wrench size=bolt size *1.7Example: M10 bolt we can use wrench 17

TORQUE WRENCHES

A monkey wrench has an ‘F’ shape appearance, and the top part remains at a fixed position, while the bottom part can be maneuvered up and down using a screw mechanism. It looks a little, in appearance, like an ‘F’ Clamp.Step 1 – The NutOpen the monkey wrench using the turning screw mechanism and allow plenty space for it to sit around the nuts head.Step 2 – Applying Pressurescrew the turning screw into place to tighten down on the head of the nut. Apply enough pressure that the monkey wrench jaws are clamped securely enough to turn it without them slipping off.Step 3 – TighteningIf you are tightening the nut, turn it securely in a clockwise direction, keeping the wrench moving slowly but smoothly.

Striking tools

Important tips:

Misuse of striking tools can cause: Injuries for yourself and others Damages for equipment or tools you work with Damages for your hand tools

Two hammers should never be struck together on the face, as pieces could break off.

How to use hammer properly

When striking another tool (chisel, punch, wedge…), the striking face of the proper hammer should have a diameter 9-10mm larger than the struck face of the tool

Always use a hammer of suitable size, weight and function for the specific job

Struck or hammered tools

Important tips: When striking another tool (chisel, punch, wedge…), the

striking face of the proper hammer should have a diameter 9-10mm larger than the struck face of the tool

Never use a chisel with a mushroomed struck face or a chipped or dull cutting edge

The cutting edges of wood and ripping chisels are designed for cutting wood and equally soft material. They should never be struck against metal, stone or concrete

Never use a chisel with loose handle

Impact driver:

An impact driver is a manual or power tool that delivers a strong, sudden rotational and downward force. It is often used to loosen larger screws (bolts) and nuts that are corrosively "frozen" or over-torqued

A manual impact driver with bits and adapter

1. Install the bit adapter and bit or the appropriate socket on the tool.

2. Grasp the tool firmly in your left hand

3. Engage the stuck screw or bolt.

4. Apply downward pressure, while at the same time attempting to turn the impact driver in the direction you want the screw to turn. This is generally counterclockwise to loosen, clockwise to tighten.5. Strike the top of the impact driver with a hammer. Wear heavy gloves to minimize injury if you accidentally hit your hand with the hammer.

6. Continue striking the tool while applying pressure and turning force until the bolt is loosened enough to use a faster tool, such as a socket and ratchet wrench.

Rivet hand toolsGalvanic Corrosion • When dissimilar metals come into contact in the presence of an electrolyte, a galvanic action occurs which corrodes one metal at a faster rate and the other more slowly.
