A.Established in 1927, the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) became a
State Corporation in 1990 through an Act of Parliament Cap 261 of the laws of
Kenya as amended by Act No.5 of 2019. The College is under the Ministry of
Health, entrusted with the role of training various disciplines in the health sector
to serve the interests of East Africa and beyond, drawing students from Uganda,
Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Sudan and Nigeria.
The College has 71 Campuses strategically located in 43 of the 47 counties in
the country, offering 83 medical courses within 18 programmes.

Clinical Off¬icers perform general and specialized medical duties such as
diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury, ordering and interpreting medical
tests as well as performing routine medical and surgical procedures.
Dental Technology is a specialty in the field of dentistry that deals with the treat-
ment and rehabilitation of the tissues of the oral cavity and the face. It encompasses
the design and fabrication of various prostheses and corrective appliances such as
dentures, braces and crowns and bridges.
Students are trained to promote health and prevent diseases by educating and
creating public awareness on disease prevention measures. A Health Promotion
Practitioner makes intervention using three categories of strategic interventions:
knowledge and skills development, mitigation of competing interests, and
advocating for good health
The programme entails the management of patients’ health records; both
manually and electronically (Electronic Medical Records), electronic health
information, health data classification and management, research, community
diagnosis, emergency medicine, application of ICT in health care, monitoring and
evaluation, pathology, anatomy and physiology.

The programme entails preparing adult learners for teaching research, mentorship,
development of health learning/teaching materials, assessment of learning outcomes and
development, review and evaluation of curricula in health training institutions.
The Medical Engineering profession deals with design, manufacture, installation
and maintenance of medical and hospital equipment.
Medical Laboratory Technicians perform chemical, hematological, immunologic,
histopathological, cytopathological, microscopic and bacteriological diagnostic analyses
on body fluids such as blood, urine, sputum, stool, cerebrospinal fluid as well as other
specimen. This cadre works in Clinical Laboratories at Hospitals, biotechnology labs
and non-clinical industrial clinics.
Community Nutritionists play a pivotal role in educating members of the
community on ideal nutrition, diet and food selection. In addition, this cadre
educates the community on ways to develop healthy eating habits that fulfill their
dietetic requirements and ways to manage diseases through nutrition.
Nurses work in Hospitals and other health facilities, where they provide hands on
care to patients by administering medications, managing intravenous lines, observing
and monitoring patients’ conditions, maintaining records and communicating with
Doctors.

Occupation therapists trains its students to identify occupational performance
deficits and their causes with an aim to treating injured or disabled patients through
the therapeutic use of everyday activities.
Optometrists perform vision tests and analyze results, diagnose sight problems
such as near sightedness or farsightedness, and eye diseases such as glaucoma. They
prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses and other visual aids.
Orthopaedic Technologists assess, design and fabricate as well as fit orthopedic
appliances used to support, align, prevent or correct deformities of a body part and
improve the function of a movable body part. These appliances include Prosthetics
and Orthotics
Pharmacy Technicians are mandated with receiving, confirming and filing
prescriptions, counselling patients on rational use of medicines, managing inventory in
the entire drug supply chain, extemporaneous preparation of products, pharmaceutical
sales and marketing detailing consultants, chemical analysis in the pharmaceutical
industry and regulatory affairs in pharmaceutical companies.

Public Health Officers identify and investigate health issues and health hazards.
They monitor health status to identify community health problems, enforce laws and
regulations that protect health and ensure safety, evaluate effectiveness, accessibility
and quality of personal and population based health services.

These cadres are trained to treat injuries related to bones and soft tissue by
applying non-operative approaches.
Medical Imaging Technicians are responsible for gathering images through
X-rays, ultrasounds and other equipment used to diagnose or more closely
examine medical issues, concerns or conditions.
Community Oral Health practitioners undertake promotive, preventive,
curative and rehabilitative oral health activities within the communities.
Physiotherapy is a comprehensive approach to the prevention, diagnosis
and therapeutic management of pain and disorders of human movement. The
discipline is concerned with helping people restore mobility and wellness after an
injury, accident or disability.

C.1. How can I transfer from the Campus I was placed in to one of my choice?
The procedure of requesting for a transfer is through a letter to the Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) which should either be hand delivered to the KMTC Headquarters in
Nairobi, sent via courier or post. Please note that transfers are discouraged unless
with valid reasons.

The course you applied for is quite competitive and with only 11 KMTC Cam-
puses offering it. As a result of the regulatory framework, we are not able to

8. Does KMTC offer bridging courses? The College accepts bridging certificates that have been issued by the Kenya National
Examination Council (KNEC). This means that you can bridge subjects you have failed
in, to qualify for KMTC courses as long as the examiner is KNEC.
9. I am an international student what is the procedure of applying to join KMTC
Kindly apply for the equation of your certificate(s) with Kenya National Qualifications
Authority first, and then visit the KMTC website (kmtc.ac.ke/list-of-courses/) for the minimum
requirements for our courses to check whether you are qualified.
10. How many intakes does KMTC have? The Kenya Medical Training College has two intakes, March and September every year

1. Does the College provide financial Aid to Students?
KMTC Students can receive financial aid
from the Higher Education Loans Board
(HELB), National Government Constituen-
cy Development Funds (NG-CDFs), Coun-
ty Governments and other development
partners.
2. Is the commitment fee part of the College fees?
The commitment fee is part of your Col-
lege fees. Once you pay it is deducted from
your total fee, meaning that you are con-
sidered to have paid part of the College
fees.
4. What is the procedure of applying for transcripts?
Applications for academic transcripts are received and processed at the Examinations
Office (KMTC Headquarters) upon filling the application form and payment of the
processing fee of Kshs. 1,000. The fee is paid to KMTC HQ Revenue Account No.
01003058521700, National Bank of Kenya (Hospital Branch).
An applicant who for some reason may not physically visit the College can make
the above payment and organize through a third party to obtain an official payment
receipt at the Finance Division (KMTC Headquarters). The receipt serves as a deterrent
measure against any fraudulent practices that may arise from the use of bank payment
slips.
The official payment receipt will be accepted at the Examinations Office where the
application form shall be filled by the third party presenting the receipt. Please ensure
that the person presenting the receipt has all your details including registration number,
name of Campus & course/programme and the year of completion/graduation.
The transcript will be processed within a period of 30 days.
3. How much fee does KMTC charge in a year and what is the fee payment mode?
KMTC has a tuition fee of Kshs.
80,700 per year which is paid in two
installments.
