If there is one sector in the print industry which has shown aconstant rise, it is the label sector. As consumerism grows so doespackaging and the label on it. The worth of the product is judged bythe attractive, unique and multi-process look of its label. It should beeye-catching so that the customer is drawn to pick up the product. To that end the print industry is always endeavoring to add value tothe print label with flexo, gravure, foiling and UV etc.

Also relevant is the turn-around time and its uniqueness for thatcould be a major detriment to counterfeiting. Volumes which arethe mainstay of large print houses are also there only in packagingand labels. Conventional printers in the field still swear by theirproduct while digital press manufacturers are wooing them withexpensive, new technologies which are multi-faceted and versatile.

The response and business done at Labelexpo India will be agood indicator of which way the label industry is headed.

It was a matter of great privilege for Delhi Printers’ Association to hostthe 242nd Governing Council Meeting, 65th AGM and Election of officebearers of All India Federation of Master Printers at Hotel Pride Plaza inNew Delhi on September 29 and 30, 2018, where a record number ofover 350 delegates from all parts of the country attended. I am happyto say that in the election the post of Vice-President (North) was wonby DPA’s former President and its nominee Mr. Sunil Jain.

The proceedings of the GC meeting included information aboutsubmissions made by AIFMP to the Central Government for providing amajor boost to the Make In India campaign and to enable the printingindustry to grab a sizeable chunk of foreign exchange by exportingprinted material as well as create employment opportunities. Theattendees were also informed about the successful organisation of“Romancing Print-2018” at Kalyan in Maharashtra on 1st September2018.

The 13th edition of AIFMP’s National Awards for Excellence in Printing isbeing hosted by Madurai District Offset Printers Association at Maduraion December 22, 2018. The last date of submission of entries was 10th

November but now it has been extended till 25th November, 2018. Thetheme of this year’s NAEP is “ICONIC – Performance Outclassed”. Theaward not only promotes young and upcoming printers forendeavouring to compete, but also provides a platform for innovatorsto demonstrate their expertise in aesthetics or any other latesttechnology. It also inspires other printers to emulate and work towardsdevelopment of raw ideas. In its bid to ensure that maximum numbersof entries are submitted from Delhi and NCR areas, DPA has mailed theEntry Form and other details to all its members as well as other printersof the Northern region. Aspiring printers are requested to submit theirworthy entries directly to Madurai or to the office of our associationbefore 25th November, 2018.

As regards the burning topic of the huge upward revision of nearly 40%in the prevailing Minimum Wages in Delhi, the association is fully seizedof the unbearable impact on wage bills of printing units, especiallymicro, small and medium entrepreneurs, DPA is planning to seek anearly appointment with the concerned authorities and submit asuitable memorandum about the adverse outcome of such animpracticable wage hike on our industry.

Cosmo Films launches metalized velvet lamination filmCosmo Films, a global

leader in speciality films forflexible packaging, lamina-tion and labeling applica-tions as well as syntheticpaper recently launched ametalized velvet laminationfilm for luxurypackaging segment. Thenewly developed film hasbeen engineered to offerintense silver colour alongwith rich velvet touch to thelaminated paper/

paperboard or package.Silver colour is not easy to

handle especially when usedas a background duringprinting. It takes longer todry and also has a risk of inkset off during print stacking.Due to these challenges, printers usually avoid usingsilver as a backgroundcolour. However, graphic artdesigners prefer silverbackground as it allowsthem to make attractive

artworks facilitating use ofmany other shades and theimpact it generates with goldfoil stamping and UV spotcoating. To bridge this gap,Cosmo Films introduced themetalized velvet touch filmwhich is glueable, stampableand printable. The mattesilver coloured BOPP basedvelvet touch lamination filmneeds to be laminated to theunprinted paper beforegoing for printing or postlamination embellishments.

The film is available forboth thermal and wetlamination in 32 and 20microns respectivelyand offers excellentprintability with offset, UVoffset, screen, UV inkjet andlaser printing. Apart fromproviding excellent scuffresistance, the film is perfect

for post lamination operationslike UV spot coating, foilstamping & embossing. Thefilm is ideal for lamination ofpremium products likeperfume cartons, liquor &wine cartons, gift & jewelleryboxes, shopping bags forluxury brands and graphicarts industry.

Flint Group to increase packaginginks and coatings prices in India

Raw material shortages, critical supply chain condi-tions, supply disruptions andcontinued cost burdens havenecessitated Flint GroupPackaging Inks in India toinitiate a price increase withimmediate effect.

Rising material costscoupled with increased globaltrading challenges, currencyfluctuations and economicchallenges in some regionsare presenting the industrywith a complex and volatilecost landscape.

Unprecedented priceinflation has been witnessedin resins, titaniumdioxide, pigments and keysolvents; all of thesefeedstocks affect the costbase of both solvent-basedand water-based inks andcoatings.

Upal Roy, managingdirector, Flint Group India says“Despite our staunch effortsto mitigate these supplydynamics by deployingsignificant capital and internal

A few traumatic years andmuch disruption in thegraphics business has seenrenovation and renewal inmany parts of the industry. But none has enjoyed suchdramatic rejuvenation as theflexo sector. Wecan expect to see muchmore variety and diversity inpackaging solutions in thenext ten years. Creativedigital printing implementa-tion models will not be costeffective compared to flexopresses producing 10,000packaging impressions anhour, a typical short run forFMCG packages. As brandowners demand increasingly

bespoke consumer pack-ages, even for trials across asingle city, flexo will remainthe preferred option.

Flexo technology keepsimproving process reliabilityand stability, so supplychains are reforming, andworkflow systems increas-ingly support ECG printingand distributed job manage-ment. These are key devel-opment areas for majordigital press manufacturers, keen to provide competitiveadvantage over flexography. But with over 500 customersusing the KODAK FLEXCELNX System in daily produc-tion, the company has thenecessary experience andmarket intimacy to keep it atthe leading edge of flexo andpackaging production.

There’s moreOver the next ten years in

emerging markets wherekeeping food fresh isdifficult, growing cold supplychains will lead to newpackaging and labelsapplications. According tothe United Nations Develop-ment Programme over 40%of food produced in India iswasted due to factors thatinclude lack of cold supplychains and accessiblepackaging materials. Even inwarm places, plastic wrapson coconuts can extendshelf life from four to twelveweeks. And new formats areemerging as shopping habitschange, requiring smallerquantities and trial sizes. DrJohn Anderson, responsiblefor business development atKodak, says, “we’ve gonefrom supermarkets holdingaround 9,000 product linesin the 1970s to over 45,000in the 2000’s”. Varying sizes

and versions plus shortturnaround requirementsadd pressure to complexsupply chains, and smallerquantities create morepackaging. One package fora loaf of bread becomesmultiple packages withfewer slices, more likely tobe eaten than discarded. This increases packagingbut reduces food waste.Sustainability is aboutbalance, so pressure forenvironmentally friendlypackaging lifecycles will risein line with changingrecycling behaviours.

Sort itAnderson explains that

Europe has one of thehighest levels of recycling inthe world … [but] there is adifference between recyclingand reusing and recoveringcomponents from theproduct. One of the prob-lems with plastics recyclingis getting enough of thematerial to make it easy andeconomically viable torecycle. Brands are gettingtogether to develop mecha-nisms for sorting at recyclingplants instead of in thehome or at curb side. Apartfrom the complex politicsthere are many challengesto achieving this, requiringtechnology and investmentinto separation processes,

managing mixed compo-nents, dealing with contami-nants and consumereducation. Flexible packag-ing use will keep rising. Wesee more and more of thistype of package. Instead of aPET bottle we’re seeingflexible pouches with thinnermaterials. Lightweightmaterials which stretch onpress are not well suited togravure printing, creatingopportunities for flexoprinters who have theirprocesses under control.

Flexible flexoKnowing how to prepare

for the next ten yearsdepends fundamentally onan awareness of technologi-cal developments and beingable to see where currenttrends are heading. Theflexo sector is slow movingbut working hard to exploitdigital workflow and processautomation technologies. With more predictable platemaking using technologiessuch as the KODAK FLEXCELNX System’s, this getseasier. Laser Ablative MaskSystem (LAMS) technologieswidely used for flexo plateproduction over the last 20years are reaching theirperformance limits and arechallenged to matchKodak’s speed and outputquality, without using

additional products andprocesses involving time andcost. Kodak employs acombination of high resolu-tion film-based mask,KODAK SQUARESpotImaging Technology and aunique lamination process tocreate extremely sharp flat-topped dots that are a 1:1faithful reproduction of thedigital file and optimized forprinting. This technicalapproach brings a greaterdegree of precision to theplate making process andoffers significant potentialfor future developments thatwill further the evolution ofstandardized, automatedprint production.

Kodak’s technology allowsfor the imaging of micro-level, highly engineeredpatterns on the printingsurface of the plate and asPayne explains “the plate’sthe thing controlling the inkflow” positively impactingpress running speeds. Thishelps flexo printers moveaway from outdated prac-tises, to use digital produc-tion techniques to reduceprepress process steps.Payne says flexo printing is“still basically a craftindustry … where we’regoing with production, [it]will be an automatedprocess in future”. But thisdepends on knowledgewithin the sector as much ason technology.

Training and knowledgedevelopment

Understanding how to getthe most out of new technolo-gies helps companies improveservices to customers andtheir bottom line profits. Butmaking a change takes effort.Stefano d’Andrea, a technical

consultant with the EuropeanFlexo Technology Associationreminds flexo printers that“new technologies are uselessif you don’t use them in theproper way”. He suggests thatflexo printers stop using thepress as a proofer becauseit’s no longer necessary towork that way. d’Andrea hasalso found that technology, such as the FLEXCEL NXSystem can make flexocleaner and greener, forexample by reducing environ-mental impacts using ECGprinting which reduces thenumber of inks required. Aswell as saving money, ECGprinting means less washupon press, predictable colourcontrol, faster make-readiesand more reliable file sharingacross output processes.Effective implementation ofECG requires an understand-ing of digital colour manage-ment because as d’Andreasays, “you have to demon-strate how good you are inCMYK to reach expandedgamut”. Offset printers printto ISO print control aimsextracted from predefinedcharacterization data sets fordifferent printing conditions.CRPC7, (CharacterizedReference Printing Conditions)one of several characterisa-tion data sets used in ISOgraphic technology standards, characterises CMYK’s widestcolour gamut in offset.d’Andrea points out that “weshould be able to do that inflexo” and that brand ownersand printers can worktogether to ease conversion ofprocess specific data sets forautomatic colour datarepurposing because “if youcan measure it, you cancontrol it”. Over the next ten

years we expect to see manymore flexo printers improvingcolour control and outputreliability, because this iswhat their customers want.

Control freaksOutput control depends as

much on the printing plate asit does on software androbust characterisation datasets. Improvements in platetechnology are catalysts forwider changes in the industryand have pushed Kodak tokeep refining the FLEXCEL NXSystem. But they are alsospurring ink and coating

to becoming 100% plastic-free by 2025. By then we canexpect considerable materialsadvances. Today’s ecomaterials are made withplant-based products buttaking corn from food chainmakes food more expensive.Anderson says the “nextgeneration of products willcome from waste productsfrom plant materials”, such asa monolayer instead ofmultilayer substrates whichare hard to recycle. Aluminiumoxide (AlOx) is “a coatingsolution. It’s very thin butwhen you melt the plastic, the

innovations, and Andersonsays, “one of the trends welook at is can the print be partof the barrier properties: canwe add stuff to ink to create abarrier?”. A quick examinationof some leading brandinitiatives reinforces the needfor technology solutions. ThePepsi 2025 sustainabilityagenda is working to achievezero waste to landfill, throughcollaborations with other bigbrands for sorting andprocessing waste. Pepsi aimsfor 100% of its packaging tobe recyclable by 2025 andthere are already signs thatother big names are followingsuit. Iceland, a UK retailer offrozen foods has committed

AlOx floats to the surface andcan be renewed and recycled… the chemistry is reallystarting to move”.

Since 2008, flexo technol-ogy advances have focusedon chemical and imaginginnovations and reshaped thesector. By 2028 flexo printingwill match offset for stabilityand predictability andtraditional supply chains willcollapse and reform. It will bea bumpy ride but as Andersonsays, “it’s all of us together …all of us in partnership drivingoperational efficiency andsustainability together”.

In 2017 four out of tenpurchases in the U.S. weremade online. The three-dimensional shoppingexperience of standing infront of a shelf lined withproducts is quickly beingreplaced by a two-dimen-sional experience of con-sumers buying products theyview on their computermonitors, tablets or cellphones. Since the buyers ofproducts are increasinglyviewing those products onmonitors and screens, doesthat mean the printedpackaging that productscarry is becoming lesscomplex?

Is the role of a primarylabel as a purchase influ-encer becoming lost asconsumers increasinglypurchase goods by clicking amouse or tapping a cellphone screen? This articleillustrates how brand owners

Are labels becomingmore complex?

and label buyers answer thiscritical question.

Surveyed more than 100brands and packagingbuyers in the fourth quarterof 2017 asking them abouttheir printed packagingstandards. Are their pres-sure-sensitive label require-ments becoming more orless sophisticated? Will thegraphics on the labels, pouches, bags and sachetsthey source be easier ormore challenging forconverters to print? Arelabels and other types ofprinted packaging becomingmore or less complex? Thegraph above indicates brandowners’ and packagingbuyers’ responses to thiscentral question.

Seventy-three percent ofsurveyed brands andpackaging buyers state thattheir printed packagingrequirements are becomingincreasingly complex, specifically in the areas oflabels and flexible packag-ing. The North Americanlabel sector is divided intotwo primary categories:prime labels (labels thatidentify consumer products)and non-prime labels (labelssuch as barcodes andindustrial labels applied todurables, electronics andautomotive components).According to brands and

packaging buyers, the primelabels they source arebecoming more complex andthe non-prime labels theysource are becoming morefunctional.

Prime labels are carryingmore colors, embellishmentsand increasingly higherfidelity print-quality levels.Non-prime labels have to bemore environmentallyresilient than ever before, and meet regulatory stand-ards driven by serializationand track & trace compli-ance.

Given this changingenvironment, label convert-ers have to bring moreinnovation to the table thanever before. They have to gobeyond simply supplyinglabels and learn to becomea process engineer, sixsigma specialist, technicalconsultant and constanteducator.

The most successfulindustry suppliers willensure they’re helping theirlabel converting customersadopt these roles in themost effective ways possibleby giving them the tools andresources they need in eachsupply niche. The process ofpurchasing a product hasnever been simpler. Howeverthe labels on those productswill become more and morecomplex.

The growing demand for high quality labels, specially in thepremium label market like wine, food and cosmetic labels, coupled with the need for saving natural resources is openingup immense opportunities for waterless printing technology.

What is Waterless Printing?Conventional “wet” offset printing requires two fluids : ink

and water (dampening solution) to reproduce an image. However, managing two fluids, with different chemical &physical properties, is a complex process, making the pressoperator’s job much quite difficult.

Waterless printing is an alternative printing system that runson standard offset presses. The key to waterless printing is aplate that uses an ink-resistant silicone coating to eliminate theneed for dampening solution.

By eliminating dampening solution from the printing process, the waterless printing system provides improvements inproductivity, overall image quality in an eco-friendly manner.

· Faster make-ready with reduced waste· Shorter start-up time· Improved solid ink density with less colour variation

throughout the print run· Superior registration resulting in reduced production time· Easy adoption with existing skill-set and workflow

Increased ProductivityAdopting Toray waterless plates ensures superior print results

and significant improvements in productivity, by way of:· Cost reduction with elimination of fountain solution,

waste water and dampening roller management

Easily Adoptable:Most offset printers can convert to waterless plates with

minimal investment and training. Waterless printing requiresthe following equipment:• Thermal platesetter (830nM)• Offset press with temperature-control capability• Toray approved waterless plate processor

Added value in printed material:Waterless printing allows usage of

the Butterfly Logo authorized by theWaterless Printing Association (WPA). InJapan, the Butterfly Logo appears oncatalogs, posters, and other printedmaterials distributed by large compa-nies. Displaying the Butterfly Logohelps in increasing the value of printed materials.

The key to waterless printing is a plate that uses aninnovative ink-resistant silicone coating to eliminate theneed for dampening solution. Globally 200 plus Codimag’swaterless offset presses and most of Iwasaki offset pressesare using waterless technology. Beyond Europe, waterlesstechnology is also being rapidly adopted in China.

Toray Waterless printing plates are distributed in India byTechnova Imaging Systems (P) Limited.

Superior printing qualityToray waterless plates deliver superior print quality on

virtually any kind of paper and non-porous substrates suchas plastics, foils and metals. Special plate structure and theabsence of dampening fluid makes it easier to consistentlyreproduce a printed image which is nearly identical tooriginal proof.
