Dion Salvador Lloyd’s works are not pictures of places but rather the atmos-phere and sense of place made physical; marks are not made to describe but to elicit and emote, to forge connection. The paintings are invitations to travel and dream, full of suggestions and familiarity, we have been here before.

He is driven by intuition, each painting an unplanned journey, an exploration of horizon and the interplay between earth and sky but more so a celebration of the physicality of paint and surface. The surface of these oil paintings are untamed, highly worked and layered, difficult to look away from, magnetic in tone and colour and leading into mysterious yet beautiful micro-worlds and solid air.

They are universal not site-specific, encouraging us to consider the energies of the natural world rather than the appearance of a particular place. They are both paintings and containers, full to the brim, energized and charged by their vibrancy and animation; they move, breathe, whisper, sing. To see them is to feel them, they go in through the eyes but aim for the soul.

In 2013, I was asked to create a piece of work on a postcard for a Silent Art Auction in aid of the Martlets Hospice. Initially, my thoughts were to create a painting using watercolour, but as I am an oil painter, I thought I would use oils.

This was the first time in my career that I have chosen to apply oil paint to paper. I felt the most amazing connection with the paper, its versatility, flexibility, it’s sur-prising durability, that the paint can be rubbed deep into the surface, the occasional fingerprint forming part of the work, blended into the paper’s fibres whilst being held in my hands and even shaken to help the oils find their resting place.
