• Russia could begin major military action any day now: US national security adviser

Washington

Amid mounting warnings that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could come any

day, the Pentagon said yesterday that the latest top-level US-Rus-sian contacts did not provide “any cause for optimism.”

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby offered a grim assessment of the one-hour phone conver-sation on Saturday between US President Joe Biden and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“It’s certainly not a sign that things are moving in the right direction. It’s certainly not a sign that Mr Putin has any intention to de-escalate. And it’s certainly not a sign that he is recommit-ting himself to a diplomatic path forward,” Kirby told “Fox News Sunday” when asked about the lack of fundamental change af-

ter the call.“So, it does not give us any

cause for optimism.”US officials in recent days have

issued a series of increasingly blunt warnings that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could be imminent, and foreign countries have been rushing to evacuate their nationals.

US national security adviser

Jake Sullivan told CNN yester-day that “a major military action could begin by Russia in Ukraine any day now.”

Sullivan used some of the most specific — and chilling — lan-guage yet employed by an Amer-ican official, warning that an in-vasion is “likely to begin with a significant barrage of missiles

and bomb attacks ... so innocent civilians could be killed.”

That, he said, would be fol-lowed by a ground invasion in which “innocent civilians could get caught in the crossfire.”

Sullivan said Russia might yet opt for a diplomatic solution, but its forces near Ukraine’s borders are “in a position where they

could launch a military action very, very rapidly.”

The growing drumbeat of warnings has infused diplomatic contacts with a sense of intense urgency.

Biden was set to speak to Pres-ident Volodymyr Zelensky “in coming hours,” the Ukrainian leader’s office said yesterday.

The husband of a British Iranian charity worker de-

tained in Iran has spoken of her fury after learning that a deal to bring her home had collapsed.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who is being arbitrarily detained in Iran, fears that she is being used as a “bargaining chip” in ongoing nuclear talks, The Guardian newspaper reported.

She is filled with “anger at her life being stolen” and the government’s “lack of urgen-cy” in securing her release, her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, said.

The 43-year-old was sen-

ly in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was given another sentence in 2021 for “spreading propaganda.”

She is now under house arrest in Tehran, unable to return to her husband and seven-year-old daughter, Gabriella, in the UK.

On Wednesday, ministers of UK Parliament were informed that Britain had signed an agree-ment to secure her release in the summer, but that the deal had collapsed.

Indian expatriates ‘most exchange rate sensitive’ 15-20pc increase in volume of remittances to India following rupee depreciation

• Bangladeshis come second followed by Pakistanis, according to industry insiders

Staff Reporter TDT | Manama

Indian expatriates are the most sensitive of all expa-triate communities as the

volume of remittances to India drastically increases whenever the rupee depreciates, accord-ing to remittance industry in-siders.

This was reflected as the volume of rupee remittances spiked between 15 and 25 per cent during the last two days after the currency fell against Bahrain dinar. The conversion rate was 199.86 Indian rupees for one Bahraini dinar yesterday and it is the highest since the beginning of the New Year.

Speaking to The Daily Trib-une, a senior executive work-ing in the remittance industry, said the flow of remittances is decided by the moderate-high income group expatriates and

not blue-collar workers.“Blue collar workers hardly

influence the spike in remit-tance sector, for they are always consistent,” the senior executive said.

“They have to send money home every month irrespective of the exchange rate as families are desperately waiting for their money. It is the moderate to high income people, who ac-cumulate Bahraini dinar and wait for the rupee to depreciate. They send the money when the exchange rate is at its best.”

Bangladeshi expatriates come close to Indian expatriates in terms of exchange rate sensi-tivity and they are followed by Pakistani expatriates, the in-

dustry insiders said, adding that the Filipino expatriates are the least exchange rate sensitive of all expatriate communities in the Kingdom.

Another remittance industry executive said that the coming days are expected to see a sharp increase in the volume of money transfers.

“The money transfers have seen a decline during the pan-demic period owing to migrant exodus and job losses. Now it is catching up and the industry is becoming more resurgent.”

According to the World Bank, remittances are projected to continue to grow by 2.6 per cent in 2022 in line with global mac-roeconomic forecasts.

A resurgence of COVID-19 cases and reimposition of mobility re-strictions poses the biggest down-side risk to the outlook for global growth, employment and remit-tance flows to developing coun-tries, the World Bank observes.

The South Indian state of Kerala has been the worst-hit last year following a huge drop in remittances from the Gulf countries from where about 1.2 million workers returned in the aftermath of Covid-driven layoffs.

According to the World Bank, before the pandemic struck the region, Kerala had an esti-mated four million expatriates working in the GCC countries contributing 30 per cent of the state’s income.

“Low-skilled workers and low-income expatriates were the hardest hit. The monthly remittances to families receiv-ing them in Kerala fell on av-erage by $267,” the World Bank pointed out.

One major factor in the lev-el of remittances holding up was family loyalties apart from the stimulus payments in some countries where the workers were located.

“A woman (the first defend-ant) welcomed me upon my ar-

Bahrain marks National Action Charter’s 21st

anniversary todayTDT | Manama

Bahrain today celebrates the 21st anniversary of the Na-

tional Charter.On 14 February 2001, His

Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued Royal Decree No. 6 for 2001 on the estab-lishment of the “Activation of the National Action Charter Commission” with a mandate to review all national laws and propose the necessary amend-ments and mechanisms to im-plement the National Action Charter, following its approval by a sweeping majority.

It ushered a new era of po-litical and democratic reform within a modern constitutional monarchy, the rule of law based on justice and transparency, the separation of legislative, exec-utive and judicial powers and their cooperation in accord-ance with the Constitution.

Democratic achievements, human rights freedoms and integrated development have emanated from the National Action Charter.

The Charter and the ensuing Constitution also resulted in guaranteeing public and per-

sonal freedoms and equal rights and duties, freedom of political, social, educational, cultural, professional associations and trade unions, the consolida-tion of economic freedom, the diversification of the sources of income, and the protection of the environment and wildlife.

Quadrennial parliamentary and municipal elections have been held regularly since 2002 in full integrity and transpar-ency under judicial supervi-sion and with a high turnout.

The successful presence of Bahraini women in all democ-racy entitlements is a tribute to their political empowerment.

Bahrain ‘rabies free’ Alarm over increasing stray attacks; Bahrain Strays founder says spaying and

neutering the only solution

• Killing ‘homeless’ dogs inhumane, uncivilised act: Fathiya Al Bastaki

Staff Reporter TDT | Manama

Bahrain is rabies free and there have been many decades since the last

case was reported, according to Health Ministry sources.

The assurance comes amid new concerns over increased reports of stray attacks from across the Kingdom.

Stray attacks have been re-ported from all governorates, except the Southern, with hot-spots being Gudaibiya, Askar, LuLu Road in Salmaniya, Nu-waidrat, Sitra, Sanad and Tubli.

Sources say the Capital Gov-ernorate is the most affected and the victims are mainly night shift workers, who tread to their homes late nights on foot.

Speaking to The Daily Trib-une, Fathiya Al Bastaki, a pas-sionate Bahraini animal lover and Bahrain Strays founder, said increasing awareness along with spaying and neutering remain the only solution to fix the issue.

She said killing stray dogs is not at all a humane solution and it is just an uncivilised act.

“The country started its Catch-Neuter-Release (CNR) programme two years ago in order to control the overpopu-lation and that was really a good step, which everyone appreci-ated. But sadly, this process has

been stopped now for almost a year although the residents didn’t stop from complaining,” she said.

“The cleaning company later dumped dogs in Askar without spaying or neutering. My group and I had to do a lot of hard

work to catch some females and transport them to clinics for spaying. Stray dogs in Askar never bothered Asian workers and no-one also complained about it.

“Two weeks ago, we were shocked when we came to know that there was a decision to get rid of strays from Askar as we found dead bodies in some are-as. They were shot and the bod-ies were buried, but partially. We don’t know why the dogs were shot to death? No one had complaints in that area.

“It’s inhuman to kill innocent animals, which caused no harm to anyone there, and what is really weird is that, how could they decide to kill dogs that were already spayed and neu-tered?

“There are over 1,000 stray dogs in Askar, where the min-istry has been dumping them for the past four years. Many of them have gotten killed in car accidents. There are no residen-tial areas in that locality.

“Strays will never attack an-yone who completely ignores them since they are territori-al beings. If you don’t stare at

them, they would at best bark and leave you. Barking is just a form of threatening to protect their territories. Don’t bother about them, they won’t attack you if you are minding your own business.”

Fathiya said neutering and spaying remain the only solu-tion to fix the issue.

“I along with a group of vol-unteers have been spaying and neutering for over eight years now. The Works Ministry start-ed it in 2020 and it has not been there for the past one year.

“We have been taking the spaying process forward after receiving support from Her Highness Shaikha Noora bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Rehabilita-tion is not a practical solution as we have thousands of them.”

She said there is no need to raise concern over “rabies in-fection” as there are no cases in the Kingdom. However, she highlighted the need to bring the canine distemper situation under control, saying: “Unless all pups are vaccinated with two doses, we can’t bring the situa-tion under control. We can’t do it for the strays.”

It is learnt that the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Ur-ban Planning Ministry has giv-en the contract to Black Gold Company for catching strays with an aim to carry out CNR programme and control the population.

Concerned individuals can give a ring at 17155363, 80008001 or 38099994. Harming animals including stray dogs is a legal offence in the Kingdom, which can attract fines and jail terms.

our existing Bank ABC franchise will drive a new strategy to build a banking powerhouse in this market of fundamental impor-tance to MENA.

The digital transformation programme of the Bank made significant progress during 2021 with many notable achievements, including the launch of fully dig-ital onboarding for corporates.

Bank ABC’s world-class digital mobile-only bank, ila was able to establish itself as a leading inno-vator and digital disruptor in its home market of Bahrain, exceed-

ing its annual growth targets. The Group’s fintech pay-

ments provider, AFS, installed a new management team and re-freshed its strategy to strength-en its market value proposition, creating renewed emphasis on growth in its core processing and merchant acquiring busi-ness lines, with the latter set to launch in Egypt shortly.

The Bank also collaborated with various stakeholders to fa-

cilitate seamless cross-border payments using our API inter-face together with JP Morgan’s blockchain platform technology, overseen by the Central Bank of Bahrain.

The pilot was tested using USD, and this technology will allow us to expand our exist-ing offering and introduce more currencies in future.

The Group also won several awards including ‘Best Inno-

vation Lab’, ‘Best Consumer Digital Bank’ and ‘Best Digital Banking App’ for ila, at the Glob-al Finance Innovators Awards; ‘Best Bank in Trade Finance Bahrain’ at the GTR Leaders in Trade Awards and Global Fi-nance’s World’s Best Treasury & Cash Management Banks 2022 Award for “Best Overall Bank for Cash Management” in Bahrain and Tunisia.

Bank ABC’s Group Chairman, Mr Saddek Omar El Kaber com-mented, “We are pleased with our performance during 2021. The Group successfully transitioned from a challenging 2020, to deliv-ering higher levels of profitabil-ity, with the continued focus on execution of its growth strategy, which also included the acqui-sition and consolidation of BBE. Despite continued headwinds in the global economy related to the various Covid-19 variants, inflation and supply-chain bottlenecks we remain optimistic on the future growth as business sentiment im-proves in the region and beyond.”

Saudi transfers Aramco shares worth $80 bln to state fundReuters | Dubai

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin

Salman has transferred 4% of Saudi Aramco shares worth $80 billion to the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, the government said yesterday.

The shares will bolster the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) strong finan-cial position and high credit ratings in the medium term, the crown prince said in a statement.

The state remains the largest shareholder in Sau-di Aramco after the transfer process, as it retains more than 94% of the company’s shares, the statement said.

The transfer of existing shares would help to boost PIF’s assets under manage-ment, which are targeted to grow to about 4 trillion riyals ($1.07 trillion) by the end of 2025, it added.

Saudi Aramco said in a statement the transfer was a private transaction between the government and the state fund. “The company is not a party to the trans-fer and did not enter into any agreements or pay or receive any proceeds from that transfer,” it said.

It said the move would not affect the number of issued shares nor the com-pany’s operations, strategy, dividends distribution pol-icy or governance frame-work.

It added that the shares transferred would rank equally among other exist-ing ordinary shares.

The head of the sovereign wealth fund, Yasir al-Ru-mayyan, said last year that Saudi Aramco may consider selling more shares if mar-ket conditions are right, while the Wall Street Jour-nal recently reported that the kingdom could target a stake sale of as much as $50 billion.

News in brief u Vietnam will remove its COVID-19 restrictions on international passenger flights with all markets starting Feb. 15, with no limitation on the number of flights, the state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper reported yesterday. The Southeast Asian country imposed tight border controls at the start of the pandemic to keep out COVID-19, with some initial success, but that dealt a blow to its burgeoning tourism sector which accounted for about 10% of gross domestic product. “Vietnam will lift restrictions on international flights starting February 15. The frequency of flights will be restored to pre-pandemic level,” Tuoi Tre said, citing Dinh Viet Son, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam.

u Norway will scrap nearly all its remaining COVID-19 lockdown measures as high levels of coronavirus infections are unlikely to jeopardise health

services, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said on Saturday. The Nordic country, which removed most curbs on Feb. 1, will still keep some restrictions for the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. The new

rules will take effect from Saturday at 1000 CET (0900 GMT). “We are removing almost all coronavirus measures,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere told a news conference.

u Thousands of people revelled in the start of the annual Carnival celebrations in Venice on Saturday, marking a slow return to normality after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the two previous editions. The 2020 Venice Carnival, which usually draws tourists from around the world, was curtailed when the pandemic broke out in Italy in February that year and then cancelled the following year as the government sought to contain infections. “This is the Carnival of hope,” said Venice resident Cristian Scalise. “COVID is ending and we hope to return to our life as always.”

u German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is poised to be re-elected yesterday for a second straight term, after gaining a reputation as a tireless defender of democratic values at a time when resurging far-right extremism and the coronavirus pandemic were putting them to the test. The Social Democrat, 66, served twice as foreign minister in Angela Merkel’s cabinet, stepping back from his duties as Germany’s top diplomat to take on the ceremonial role as head of state in 2017. With his snowy white hair, round glasses and dimpled smile, the trained lawyer has become one of Germany’s most popular and trusted politicians.

US F-22 fighter jets arrive in UAE following Houthi attacks• The jets arrived at the UAE base as part of a multifaceted demonstration of US support

Reuters | Dubai

US F-22 fighter jets arrived at an air base in the Unit-ed Arab Emirates (UAE) on

Saturday following a spate of un-precedented attacks in Abu Dhabi by Houthi fighters in Yemen, the

US Air force said on Saturday. In recent weeks, the Iran-

aligned Houthis have waged a string of largely failed strikes on UAE targets that have triggered Emirati and US air defenses and have even seen American troops based there briefly taking shelter.

The jets arrived at the UAE base as part of a multifaceted demon-stration of US support after a se-ries of attacks throughout Jan-uary threatened US and Emirati armed forces stationed at the host installation, the statement said.

The US Secretary of Defence ordered the rapid deployment of the fifth-generation aircraft in coordination with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE, said a statement by the United States Air Forces Central.

It will join a range of joint, coa-

lition and allied and partner com-bat air power capabilities already based across the region.

The airmen and F-22s are de-ployed from the 1st Fighter Wing, located at Joint Base Langley-Eu-stis, Virginia, the US Air Force said.

Last week the US general over-seeing Middle East operations told Reuters the US will help the UAE replenish interceptors it uses to knock down incoming missiles.

The recent Houthi attacks have thrown a spotlight on so-far un-successful UN-led efforts to bro-ker an end to the war in Yemen, which since 2015 has pitted the Houthis against a Saudi Arabi-an-led military coalition that in-cludes the UAE.

A ghost v i l lage th at has emerged as drought has

nearly emptied a dam on the Spanish-Portuguese border is drawing crowds of tourists with its eerie, grey ruins.

With the reservoir at 15% of its capacity, details of a life frozen in 1992, when the Aceredo village

in Spain’s northwestern Galicia region was flooded to create the Alto Lindoso reservoir, are being revealed once more.

“It’s as if I’m watching a movie. I have a feeling of sadness,” said 65-year-old pensioner Maximino Perez Romero, from A Coruna. “My feeling is that this is what will happen over the years due to drought and all that, with climate change.”

Walking on the muddy ground cracked by the drought in some

spots, visitors found partially collapsed roofs, bricks and

wooden debris that once made up doors or beams, and even a drinking fountain with water still streaming from a rusty

pipe.

Crates with empty beer bottles were stacked by what used to be a cafe, and a semi-destroyed old car was rusting away by a stone wall. Drone footage showed the derelict buildings.

Maria del Carmen Yanez, may-or of the larger Lobios council, of which Aceredo is part, blamed the situation on the lack of rain in recent months, particularly in January, but also on what she said

was “quite aggressive exploita-tion” by Portugal’s power utility EDP (EDP.LS), which manages the reservoir.

On Feb. 1, Portugal’s govern-ment ordered six dams, including Alto Lindoso, to nearly halt water use for electricity production and irrigation, due to the worsening drought.

Contacted by Reuters, EDP said the low reservoir levels were due

to the drought, but that it was managing water resources “ef-ficiently” and that these were above the minimum require-ments, including Alto Lindoso.

Questions over the sustaina-bility of reservoirs are not new. Last year, several Spanish villages complained about how power utilities used them after a rap-id draw-down from a lake by Iberdrola in western Spain. The

company said it was following the rules.

Environment Ministry data shows Spain’s reservoirs are at 44% of their capacity, well be-low the average of about 61% over the last decade, but still above levels registered in a 2018 drought. A ministry source said drought indicators showed a po-tential worsening in the coming

weeks, but did not yet detect a generalised problem throughout the country. Jose Alvarez, a for-mer construction worker from Lobios, felt a mix of nostalgia and fatalism at he remembered his working days in Aceredo.

“It’s terrible, but it is what it is. That’s life. Some die and others live,” he said.

Arctic seed vault to receive rare deposits

• Svalbard facility is global back-up for seed banks

• Is designed to safeguard biodiversity of crops

• First group to make withdrawal among Monday’s depositors

Reuters | Oslo

A vault built on an Arctic mountainside to preserve

the world’s crop seeds from war, disease and other catastro-phes will receive new deposits on Monday, including one from the first organisation that made a withdrawal from the facility.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, on Spitsbergen island halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, is only opened a few times a year to limit its seed banks’ exposure to the outside world.

On Monday, gene banks from Sudan, Uganda, New Zealand, Germany and Lebanon will de-posit seeds, including millet, sorghum and wheat, as back-ups to their own collections.

The International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA), which moved its headquarters to Beirut from Aleppo in 2012 because of the war in Syria, will deposit some 8,000 samples.

ICARDA made the first seed withdrawal from the vault in 2015 to replace a collection damaged by the war, and two further withdrawals in 2017 and 2019 to rebuild its own collec-tions, now held in Lebanon and Morocco.

T h e v a u l t , w h i c h holds over 1.1 million seed samples of nearly 6,000 plant species from 89 seed banks glob-ally, also serves as a backup for plant breeders to develop new crop varieties.

The world used to cultivate over 6,000 different plants but UN experts say we now get about 40% of our calories from three main crops - maize, wheat and rice - making food supplies vulnerable if climate change causes harvests to fail.

Philippine poll shows Marcos Jr’s lead widening in prez raceReuters | Manila

The son and namesake of late Philippine dictator Ferdi-

nand Marcos strengthened his lead over his closest rival ahead of the presidential election in May, results of a new poll re-leased on Sunday showed.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr gar-nered a 44-point lead over Phil-ippine Vice President Leni Ro-bredo in the Jan. 19-24 survey by independent pollster Pulse Asia, an 11-point increase compared with the previous poll in early December.

A total of 2,400 respondents were asked to pick their first choice for president and vice president if the election were held during the survey period, with 60% expressing preference for Marcos, while 16% chose

Robredo. In the December poll with the

same sample size, Marcos was

on top with 53% compared to Robredo’s 20%.

Boxing superstar Manny Pac-quiao and Manila city mayor Francisco Domagoso trailed, each getting 8%, while Senator Panfilo Lacson took 4%.

Marcos’ running mate, Sara Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of incumbent President Rodri-go Duterte, remained the top choice for vice president, taking a 21-point lead over her closest rival, Senate President Vicente Sotto. The latest Pulse Asia sur-vey was conducted before the Philippines’ Commission on Elections last week dismissed a series of complaints seeking to disqualify Marcos, removing a major hurdle for him in the May 9 contest.

The complaint’s petitioners have vowed to challenge the

decision and can appeal to the Supreme Court.

The election body also reject-ed a complaint seeking the can-cellation of Marcos’ certificate of candidacy. As frontrunner, Marcos appears poised to com-plete a remarkable rebranding of the family name 36 years after a “people power” uprising end-ed his father’s autocratic rule.

US says diplomacy still open to end Ukraine standoff with Russia• Russia calls US warnings ‘hysteria’

• US OSCE observers start leaving east Ukraine

Reuters | Honolulu/Donetsk, Ukraine

The United States said the dip-lomatic path remained open

to end a standoff with Moscow over Ukraine but said the risk of Russian military action was high enough to warrant pulling US em-bassy staff out of Kyiv.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was speaking after talks on Saturday with Japanese and

South Korean counterparts, fol-lowing Washington’s warning that Russia’s military, which has more than 100,000 troops massed near Ukraine, could invade at any moment.

Moscow, which has repeatedly denied it plans to invade and said it is responding to aggression by NATO allies, has dismissed those warnings as “hysteria”.

“The diplomatic path remains open. The way for Moscow to show that it wants to pursue that path is simple. It should de-esca-late, rather than escalate,” Blinken said after his meetings in the US

Pacific archipelago of Hawaii. In an hour-long call on Satur-

day, US President Joe Biden told Russia’s Vladimir Putin that the West would respond decisively to any invasion of Ukraine, add-ing such a step would produce widespread suffering and isolate Moscow.

Neither side said there had been any breakthroughs.

The Kremlin said Putin told Biden that Washington had failed to take Russia’s main concerns into account and it had received no “substantial answer” on key elements of its security demands.

A ghost v i l lage that has emerged as drought has

nearly emptied a dam on the Spanish-Portuguese border is drawing crowds of tourists with its eerie, grey ruins.

Iraqi court bars Zebari from running for presidency -state mediaReuters | Baghdad

Iraq’s Supreme Federal Court has ruled that for-

mer foreign minister Hosh-yar Zebari is not eligible to run for the presidency amid corruption allegations, the state news agency reported yesterday.

Zebari , a prominent Kurdish politician who served as Iraq’s foreign min-ister for more than a decade, was finance minister when he was sacked by parlia-ment in 2016 over alleged corruption.

He denied the accusations and said they are politically motivated.

Ukraine sees no point closing its airspace

amid the tensions with Moscow, a senior Ukrainian official said yesterday, after the United States warned that Russia could invade at any time.

Dutch carrier KLM said it would stop flying to Ukraine and Germany’s Lufthansa said it was considering sus-pending flights. Ukraine’s SkyUp said on Sunday it had to divert one flight after the owner of the leased aircraft barred it from entering Ukrainian airspace.

At Kyiv’s Borispil Airport, the largest in Ukraine, there was little sign on Saturday of an exodus. KLM, part of Air France, said it would stop flying to Ukraine im-mediately. Two third of the 298 passengers killed when Malaysia Airlines MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014.

Olivia Rodrigo named Billboard’s Woman of the Year

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Olivia Rodrigo has been named Billboard’s Woman

of the Year. The 18-year-old pop star has

enjoyed a meteoric rise since releasing her debut album, ‘SOUR’, in May, and she’s now set to be honoured at the Bill-board Women in Music Awards on March 2.

Billboard editorial director Hannah Karp said: “Olivia’s trajectory to superstardom is the stuff of pop music legend. Her talents as a storyteller and songwriter have made Olivia one of the most authentic and exciting new artists to explode

onto the scene in years.“Connecting with au-

diences across genera-tions through emotion-ally charged songs about

heartbreak, jealousy and growing up, she’s

achieved absolutely incredible chart success for a debut artist. We are thrilled to celebrate her unique voice and the enormous impact she’s had on fans around the globe in such a short time.”

Past recipients of the acco-lade include the likes of Billie Eilish, Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Meanwhile, Ol-ivia previously ex-plained how the COVID-19 pan-demic influenced her debut album.

The pop star c o n f e s s e d to being an “overshar-e r ” a n d said that, in some ways, she bene-fited from r e l e a s i n g the record

amid the pandemic.Asked about writing

“brutally honest songs”, she explained: “I think that was the beauty of making a record in the pandemic a lit-tle bit and also I think that’s the fun thing about making your first record is you’re kind of like not caught up in it, be-ing consumed. You’re kind of just writing how you feel and writing to get it out.

“And I don’t know ... I’ve never been worried about

writing like vulnerably like that.

“I’d always been such an oversharer and it’s actually like people around me who are like, ‘OK Olivia, like tone it down, Oliv-ia maybe you

shouldn’t say that in public’ or something like that ... but yeah I love writing really brutally honest songs.”

Matthew Perry says it’s ‘time people heard from’ him as he announces memoirFox | Los Angeles

Matthew Perry is telling his story.

On Thursday, the “Friends” star announced his upcom-ing memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” which is set to be released in November.

“So much has been written about me in the past,” Perry began his social media an-nouncement. “I thought it was time people heard from me.”

“The highs were high, the lows were low,” the 52-year-old actor admitted. “But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldn’t. And it’s all in here. I apologize it’s not a pop-up book.”

It was previously revealed that Perry was writing a

memoir in which he’ll discuss his time filming the sitcom, as well as his battles with

addictions. The book is a result of

a report-ed sev-en-fig-u r e d e a l w i t h F l a t -i r o n Books, a divi-sion of

Macmil-lan, which

won worldwide rights.“In the book, Perry takes

readers behind the scenes and onto the soundstage of the most successful sitcom of all time while opening up about his private struggles with ad-diction,” the publisher told Fox News Digital in a statement in October.

“Candid, self-aware and told with his trademark hu-mor, Perry vividly details his lifelong battle with the dis-ease and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all,” the statement continued. “Per-ry’s memoir, the first from a cast member of ‘Friends,’ is unflinchingly honest, dishy and hilarious. This is the book that ‘Friends’ fans have been waiting for but will also shed a powerful light for anyone who is in their own battle for themselves or a loved one.”

Adele expresses ‘regret’ over cancelled Las Vegas residency, dodges engagement rumoursFox | Los Angeles

Adele was put on the spot in a new inter-

view when she was asked about why she cancelled her Las Vegas residency the day before she was set to debut the show at Cae-sars Palace.

The British singer, 33, appeared on “The Graham Norton Show” where she admitted she has regrets over how she handled can-celling the show.

“I tried my hardest and really thought I would be able to pull something to-gether in time,” Adele said on the BBC One series, per the Daily Mail. “I regret that I kept going until that late in the day. It would have been a really half-a---d show and I can’t do that.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger gushes over ‘great’ son-in-law Chris Pratt

Fox | Los Angeles

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a proud papa.

On Thursday, the “Terminator” star appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and opened up about his growing family.

His daughter Kath-erine Schwarzenegger Pratt and her husband Chris Pratt are expect-ing their second baby together. The couple is already parents to their 1-year-old daughter Lyla.

“ It ’s t h e e a s i e s t thing to be a grandfa-ther,” the 74 -ye a r-o l d gushed to the host.

“They come over to the house, you play with Lyla

for around an hour or two, put her on the horse, put her with the dog,” the actor shared. “And after two hours, they leave. It’s fantastic! I have a great time when they come over to the house.”

The f o r -m e r g o v -ernor

of Cal-ifornia

a l s o

praised Pratt, 42, calling him a “fantastic guy” and “a great son-in-law.”

“I love my daughter Kath-erine, she’s so wonderful and I’m so proud of her,” he shared about the 32-year-old author. “When they come over the whole house lights up. And the animals are there.”

When Kimmel, 54, asked if he knew the baby’s gender, Schwarzenegger insisted he had

no idea.“I really don’t know. But I do

blow it a lot of times because I can’t shut my mouth,” said Schwarzenegger. “It could eas-ily be that they know. I don’t know. I don’t think so, because my wife never wanted to know. It was always a guessing kind of a game.”

“I think because Kather-ine is a lot like Maria, she will probably go in the same direc-tion and not want to know,” he added.

In Dec. 2021, Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s divorce was finalized. It had been more than 10 years since the award-win-ning journalist, 66, petitioned to end her then-25-year marriage to the action star.

The pair had been mar-ried since 1986 when Shriver filed for divorce in 2011 after Schwarzenegger disclosed he had fathered a child with a member of their household staff years earlier.

Past recipients of the accolade include the likes of Billie Eil-ish, Madonna and Lady Gaga

The 20-year-old actress will play the titular role in Dis-ney’s live-ac-tion remake of the iconic

fairytale.In a conversation with An-

TDT | Manama

Bahrain’s international bowling superstar Yousef Falah posted the high series on day five of qualify-

ing in the His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa First Bowling Championship, being played at Funland Centre.

Falah took down 693 pins for his best trial of the tournament thus far, earning him the daily prize.

His score added to his two other series of 650 and 612 to bring his new total to 1,955 pins for a 217.22 average, which helped him improve to third place on the men’s standings.

Still in the lead with a 2,039 total and

a 226.56 average was Emerson Goten-cio from the Philippines, while Ahmed Fareed followed in second on 2,026 and 225.11 marks.

Zeyad Alkheliwi (1,903, 211.44) from Saudi Arabia, Dante Tisdom (1,895, 210.56) from the US and Essa Taqi (1,893, 210.33) were fourth through sixth, re-spectively. Ali Al Mass (1,873, 208.11) and Abdulla Abdulkarim (1,807, 200.78) rounded off the top eight.

Meanwhile, national team star Nadia Al Awadhi rose to first place in the wom-en’s division.

She played her first two trials of the competition and posted scores of 553 and 549, bringing her two-series total to 1,102 for a 122.44 average.

She took over as leader from fel-low-Bahrain international Reem Sultan (1,003, 111.44), while Nahla Al Adaas from Saudi (993, 110.33) stayed third.

Behind them were Noor Saleh (811, 90.11), also from Saudi, Maricel Sultan (791, 87.89), and Marwa Sultan (741, 82.33). Completing the top eight were Mariam Abdulla (636, 70.67) and Fatma Abdulla (625, 69.44).

In the seniors division, Yousif Al Ali improved to the top spot after playing a pair of impressive series to raise his standing.

Al Ali continued his fine form from the previous day, when he registered a high of 684, by scoring 645 and 598 trials. That brought his total to 1,927 and average to 214.11.

The veteran leapfrogged former lead-er Tisdom into first place, while Arif Murseel was third with marks of 1,773 and 197.00.

Mohammed Al Shawoosh (1,695, 188.33), Mohammed Darraj (1,599, 177.67), Sami Salloom (1,436, 159.56), Abdullatif Rashid (968, 107.56), and Mo-hammed Al Murbati (892, 99.11) were all also in the seniors’ best eight.

Qualifying continues today. Bowlers in this stage must play at least three trials to be eligible to advance to the next round, with each participant’s top three series being counted.

At the end of this stage, the top 24 men march through to their next stage, while the top eight from the women’s and sen-iors divisions will qualify.

The tournament is scheduled to be held until February 26, and it features prize money worth more than BD19,000, to be allocated to the top finishers in the men’s, women’s and seniors categories.

Broad says ‘sleep affected’ by ‘five-minute’ Test axe call

AFP | London

England fast bowler Stu-art Broad yesterday said

his controversial axing from the team to tour the West Indies was delivered in a “five-minute phone call” which has “affected my sleep”.

Broad, 35, has 537 Test wickets to his name but he and fellow veteran James Anderson, who is the coun-try’s record wicket taker with 640 victims, were dropped following the 4-0 Ashes rout in Australia.

Anderson, 39, topped England’s bowling averages in the series with his eight wickets costing just 23.37 apiece, while Broad took the tourists’ first five-for of the trip in Sydney.

Both, however, were left out of the squad to play a three-match Test series in the West Indies next month.

“I am struggling to put things into context. It’s hard to do so when all you’ve had is a five-minute phone call and nothing else,” Broad wrote in his Mail yesterday column.

Australia beat Sri Lanka after super over drama in 2nd T20

AFP | Sydney

Australia scraped past Sri Lanka to take control of

their five-match Twenty20 se-ries yesterday after late fire-works from the visitors forced their second clash in Sydney to a rare super over after it ended in a tie.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and bowled for the second game in a row, despite his side strug-gling in the run chase during their 20-run defeat in the first clash of the series on Friday.

It appeared to be heading the same way after Josh Inglis’ 48 spearheaded Australia to 164 for six, and the Sri Lankan top order again failed to fire.

But Pathum Nissanka’s 73 and a breezy 34 off 19 balls from Shanaka sent the game to the wire.

With Marcus Stoinis bowl-ing, Sri Lanka needed 12 off the last three balls to win. Maheesh Theekshana hit a six, then a single before Dush-mantha Chameera smacked a four to tie the match and send it into a nail-biting super over.

Josh Hazlewood bowled the over for Australia with Shanaka and Dinesh Chandi-mal facing. After two dot balls, Chandimal was run out and Sri Lanka managed just five runs.

That left Australia needing six to win with Glenn Maxwell and Stoinis reaching the target off three balls from spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

“Great to get the win but pretty sloppy overall, we might have got away with one tonight,” said skipper Aaron Finch. “We bowled some great overs, we bowled some poor overs. But the fielding was poor.”

England’s Livingstone top overseas player at IPL auction, Mumbai pick ArcherAFP | New Delhi

England’s Liam Livingstone yesterday became the most

expensive foreign player in this season’s IPL auction at $1.52 mil-lion, while national teammate Jofra Archer also fetched a high price despite being doubtful for the upcoming edition.

Livingstone went to Punjab Kings as the 10 teams splurged millions in Bangalore but the final day witnessed England white-ball stars including Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan going unsold.

However, Archer’s price of $1.06 million remained the day’s surprise after the franchises had been warned to pick the quick

bowler at their own risk and with a view to potential partic-ipation only in 2023 and 2024 due to his elbow injury.

Mumbai owner Akash Amba-ni said the team was “happy” at the prospect of having Archer bowling alongside India’s pace ace Jasprit Bumrah who has been retained by the franchise.

“Although it’s going to be next year but we’re very very happy to have Jof and Boom (Bumrah)

make a lethal pair for our bowl-ing attack,” Ambani told host broadcasters Star Sports.

Former England captain Mi-chael Vaughan tweeted: “You know you are good when you go for a Million dollars & you are injured !!! #Jofra #IPLAuc-tion2022.”

The 26-year-old Archer had placed himself in the top brack-et with a base price of $264,000 after a late entry into the list of players going under the hammer in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament.

Livingstone, who hit Eng-land’s fastest T20 century in 42 balls in a game against Pakistan last year, stood out this auction following his play for Rajasthan Royals the previous season after being bought for $100,000.

The 28-year-old remained above overseas big buys in-cluding Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga and the West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran as the two se-cured bids of $1.42 million each on day one.

Valieva fate in balance as Odermatt wins Olympic giant slalomAFP | Beijing

Sport’s top court convened yesterday to decide if 15-year-old Russian figure

skater Kamila Valieva can compete again at the Beijing Olympics after she failed a drugs test, while Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt won giant slalom gold in the snow and fog.

The buildup to the Games in the Chinese capital was dogged by concerns about Cov-id and human rights and have now passed the halfway point with yet more controver-sy surrounding them.

This time it involves skating sensation Valieva, whose Games hang in the balance after it emerged that she tested positive be-fore the Olympics for a banned substance.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was to hold a video hearing before deliver-ing its verdict on Monday afternoon, just a day before Valieva is scheduled to compete in the women’s singles competition, one of the most closely watched events at the Olympics.

Valieva was a strong favourite for gold but her Olympics and her fledgling career are

now in jeopardy.Christophe Dubi, Olympic Games ex-

ecutive director, said it was important to remember the “human side of this story... to think about a person of 15 in this situation”.

“We need to treat this situation extremely carefully,” said Dubi.

Valieva, who became the first woman ever to land a quadruple jump in Olympic competition as Russia won team gold on Monday, tested positive for trimetazidine

after competing at an event in Saint Peters-burg on December 25.

However, the International Testing Agen-cy says the World Anti-Doping Agency-ac-credited laboratory in Stockholm only re-ported that Valieva had returned a positive case on February 8 -- the day after she won team gold in Beijing.

The Russian team and their government have raised questions about why it took six weeks for the result to come out.

Liverpool close gap on Man City, Spurs rocked by WolvesAFP | London

Liverpool kept the pressure on Premier League leaders

Manchester City as Fabinho sealed a 1-0 win over Burnley, while Tottenham’s top four bid suffered a fresh blow in a 2-0 loss to Wolves yesterday.

Fabinho struck late in the first half at windswept Turf Moor to give Liverpool their fourth suc-cessive league victory.

Liverpool are nine points behind City with one game in hand as the Reds refuse to let the title race become a prolonged coronation for Pep Guardiola’s men.

City made it 14 wins from their last 15 league games on Saturday as Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick inspired a 4-0 win at lowly Norwich.

But Guardiola is convinced Liverpool will push the cham-pions all the way to the finish line and the way they ground out a hard-fought success against bottom of the table Burnley suggests he is right not to count them out.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was able to welcome back Sadio Mane for his first appearance since helping Senegal win the African Cup of Nations.

Mane, who only returned to training on Friday, was joined in Liverpool’s attack by Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian making his

first start since being on the losing side against Senegal in the final.

It was the first time since the end of October that Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino had start-ed together.

On a wet afternoon in Lanca-shire, Burnley were in typically aggressive mood, with Alisson

Becker forced to save Josh Brownhill’s swirling strike.

Burnley’s Wout Weghorst should have done better than produce a tame chip when he burst clean through on goal.

After a shaky start, Fabinho restored order for Liverpool five minutes before half-time.

The Brazilian poked home a fifth goal in his last seven games after Mane headed on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.

In north London, Totten-ham lost a second successive home game as Wolves fol-lowed Southampton’s victory on Wednesday. Antonio Conte’s side, loudly booed off at full-time, dropped to eighth place, four points adrift of the Cham-pions League places.

• Bapco Engineering clinch overall win and take first place in Pro class

• Bapco Sadeem captured the Nations category and Bapco Motorsport claimed the Corporate division

TDT | Manama

Bahrain Petroleum Com-pany (Bapco) karting teams swept all four win-

ners’ trophies in a hugely excit-ing Bahrain 24-Hour Karting Championship 2022, held over the weekend at Bahrain Inter-national Karting Circuit (BIKC) in Sakhir.

Bapco Engineering clinched first place overall as well as the win in the race’s Pro class, while Bapco Sadeem captured the Na-tions category and Bapco Mot-orsport claimed the Corporate division.

A total of 14 teams featuring many of the Kingdom’s most talented karters of different ages and nationalities battled it out around BIKC’s 1.414 CIK-FIA track in the gruelling endurance event. It was a true test not only of their racing skills and team-work, but also of their ability to adapt to the elements, varying track conditions and fatigue.

Bapco Motorsport kicked off the meeting by setting the fastest time in Qualifying Practice with

a best lap of one minute 12.757 seconds.

Bapco BMP then secured the leading position on the start grid after finishing first in the Super Pole session with their quickest time of 1:14.457.

But in the race, the pole-sitter ran into some trouble although their teammates in the other Bapco squads were able to push ahead.

Bapco Engineering, featuring Faisal Alshafei, Osama Albuflasa, Talal Beshara and Yousif Khami-ri were engaged in a tight finish for the overall victory against BirelArt Bahrain team, consist-ing of Lewis Smith, Jack Smith, Fahad Alkhaled, Fahad Almuqla and Rashid Almuammari.

At the chequered flag, they both completed a total of 1,103 laps, with Bapco Engineering only powering ahead by 2.889 seconds for the victory.

BIC 4, who had Shanon Dias, Royden Giles, Yousif Salem, Aysha Janahi, Ali Bucheeri and Haseeb Khan sharing the kart, rounded off the Pro category classification with 1,061 laps.

Bapco Sadeem had another reason to celebrate by taking first place in the Nations divi-sion, to add to their third-place finish overall. They had 1,099 laps—14 laps more than class runners-up MMC1, who featured Abdulla Albinali, Hamad Alba-looshi, Ali Mohamed, Abdulla Yousif and Osama Ramadan.

BIC Racing 2, with Omar Qaed, Yusuf Qaed, Fahad Alammadi, Mohammed Isa, Salman Kanian and Khalid Alhubaishi in the kart, took third place, while Bap-co BMP, represented by Abdul-

rahman Alawadhi, Saud Alsha-reedi, Saud Alsalem and Khalid Bubshait, came fourth.

MMC2, comprising Mohamed Shams, Muhannad Bahgat, Ali Husain, Abubakr Karamalla, Ab-dulaziz Shamsan, Jaffar Sakran, Abdulla Ali and Mohamed Buhasan, captured fifth place amongst the Nations contenders.

The Corporate class was clinched by Bapco Motorsport, consisting of Abdulla Althawadi, Essa Mahmood, Abdulaziz Alb-ufalah and Khalifa Zayani, with 1,099 laps. Bahrain Airport Ser-vices (BAS) Speedsters finished as the runners-up, 12 laps be-hind, with Mohamed Jaffar Ab-dali, Ahmed Kooheji, Mahmood Al Saati, Yousif Alaskeri, Ammar Ali Al Ghawas and Hussain Ha-bib sharing the driving duties.

BIC Racing 1 took third place with 1,076 laps. Their squad was composed of Jassim Marhoon, Sayed Sadiq, Zakariya Yahya,

Ahmed Falamarzi, Nigel Dias and Sara Kanian, and their fin-ish ensured that there were BIC teams in all three race catego-ries.

Manama Drift, consisting of Erich Grawunder, Jeff Baker, Alec Cullen and Phil Oh were fourth with 1,070 laps, while completing the classification amongst the Corporate teams were BAS Wonder Women with 1,032 laps posted by Sujusha Bakaal, Alya Adel Abdulkarim, Fatima Mohamed Zainudeen, Christina Jerald and Alanoud Alalwi.

Following all the action, the podium placers were presented their respective trophies in an awarding ceremony attended by BIKC, BIC and Bahrain Motor Federation officials.
