2019 I I 3

On behalf of the entire team at the North American International Auto Show, I would like to welcome you to Detroit. I’m honored to be chairman for the 2019 show and look forward to showcasing international automotive products and technology for you.

This year, we are celebrating our 30th anniversary since The Detroit Auto Show was transitioned to the North American International Auto Show in 1989. We are proud our show has grown to be the most influential annual automotive event in the world for the past 30 years. This year, you will experience the beginning of our shift from all static displays to more interactive products and technology on the show floor. I can’t wait for you to see it.

I have been working in the car business since I was 15 years old, but my passion for the industry dates back much further than that. I began washing the cars at my dad’s dealership when I was young, and now walking the show floor takes me back to the feeling I had when I would make those vehicles shine to their brightest potential. I will never lose the excitement I

feel when I’m able to experience everything the show floor has to offer—from muscle and electric cars to future concepts, to sedans and trucks, or the latest ground-breaking technologies, the North American International Auto Show has something for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to cars and family-fun activities, our show makes an impact throughout the community with Charity Preview, the largest annual single-night fundraiser in the world. Charity Preview started in 1976 by a group of local auto dealers looking to make an impact in the communities in which they lived and worked. The event brings more than 12,700 people to Cobo Center and raised nearly $5.1 million last year for local southeastern Michigan children’s charities.

When all is said and done at the end of January, it has made an economic impact of approximately $480 million to the metro Detroit region. That’s equivalent to nearly two NFL Super Bowls each year in Detroit!

Once you’ve had a chance to experience all the exciting vehicles and displays at the

show, I urge you to stay downtown and visit the many sights and events happening in our city.

We truly appreciate your patronage and hope you have a memorable time with your family and friends. We should all take pride in knowing we have an international showcase of this size in our backyards—we are the Motor City, after all.

6 I I 2019

ACURA RDXHIGHLIGHTS: The RDX is all-new for

2019, sporting a 272-horsepower turbo

four-cylinder engine, which replaces the

3.5-liter V6. The RDX also ushers in a

new design language for the automaker,

giving it a good-looking crossover to

compete with the Lexus NX, Audi A5 and

Lexus QX50. There’s an optional A-Spec

trim that adds to the crossover’s dashing

looks.

BASE PRICE: $38,295

OUR OPINION: The RDX is earning praise

in spades—from its superb driving

dynamics to its styling inside and out.

ASTON MARTIN DB11/DBS SUPERLEGGERAHIGHLIGHTS: The range-topping DBS

Superleggera is an evolution of the

DB11; however, the name alone harkens

back to the Aston Martin of yesteryear.

The car sports a 715-horsepower V12

engine wrapped in Aston svelte design

language. The DB11 can now be had in

open-air form, but only with the 530-hp

V8.

BASE PRICE: $308,081

OUR OPINION: Powerful and luxurious, the

Aston Martin is arguably the prettiest

car made today. Okay, not arguably.

Definitely.

ASTON MARTIN VANTAGEHIGHLIGHTS: The new Aston Martin

Vantage replaces a predecessor 12 years

old. The new design is distinctly Aston,

even if the front-end design looks a bit

fishy. Under the hood is a Mercedes-

AMG-sourced twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter

V8 producing 503 horsepower and 505

pound-feet of torque.

BASE PRICE: $153,081

OUR OPINION: Even with the awkward front

end, the Aston Martin Vantage still turns

heads — and it packs a performance

punch.

AUDI A5HIGHLIGHTS: Audi adds RS variants to the

A5 Coupe and Sportback, with power

coming from a hot twin-turbo V6 cranking

out 444 hp.

BASE PRICE: $70,875

OUR OPINION: Already an unimpeachable

formula, with its go-fast good looks, four

doors, ample interior space and super-

convenient hatchback configuration, the

Sportback only gets better in racy RS 5

form.

AUDI A6HIGHLIGHTS: There are only so many ways

to slice a sedan, and Audi decided to do

the cutting conservatively with the new

A6. In the U.S., it’ll get a turbocharged

3.0-liter making 340 horsepower and

369 pound-feet of torque. A four-cylinder

option will come later. The A6 also sports

a mild-hybrid system.

BASE PRICE: $59,895

OUR OPINION: The Audi A6 is all about

quiet luxury with a tad of performance,

but we’d hold out until the S6/RS6 bow.

AUDI A7HIGHLIGHTS: Like the A6, the

A7 also sports a mild-hybrid

powertrain. Audi’s turbocharged

3.0-liter engine returns,

producing 340 horsepower and

369 pound-feet of torque. New

is a seven-speed dual-clutch

automated manual transmission

that replaces the previous eight-

speed automatic.

BASE PRICE: $68,995

OUR OPINION: The coupe-like

sedan gets a much-needed

refresh, positioning itself as

a large, luxurious sedan with

sporty aspirations.

AUDI Q8HIGHLIGHTS: Audi’s range-

topping SUV looks smaller than

the Q7, but it makes up for

its diminutive size with a ton

of luxury. Power comes from

a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6

producing 335 horsepower and

369 pound-feet of torque.

BASE PRICE: $68,395

OUR OPINION: It’s a new offering

in a segment where customers

are gobbling up crossovers like

candy. It’ll sell well.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GTHIGHLIGHTS: The third-generation

Bentley Continental GT is all

new and based on the shared

platform with the Porsche

Panamera; however, it retains

the brand’s distinct luxury

styling inside and out. Remove

the badges, and it still looks

like a Bentley. Under the hood

is a 6.0-liter V12 making 626

horsepower and 664 pound-feet

of torque, sending power to all

four wheels through an eight-

speed dual-clutch gearbox.

BASE PRICE: $214,600 (est.)

OUR OPINION: The large luxury

land yacht continues, packed

with the latest automotive

technologies and performance.

What’s not to love?

BMW 3-SERIESHIGHLIGHTS: The seventh-

generation BMW 3-Series

will go on sale in just a few

months, with the 330i models

going on sale first followed by

the M340i in the spring (as a

2020 model). Under the hood

is a new turbocharged 2.0-liter

making 255 horsepower and

295 pound-feet of torque. M

Performance models get an

updated inline-six making 382

hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

BASE PRICE: $41,195

OUR OPINION: The BMW 3-Series

remains the standard for sport

sedans, even if it has lost a bit

of its edge—and soul—as it

chases sales. BMW promises

the ’19 will be better to drive

than ever.

BMW 8-SERIESHIGHLIGHTS: The BMW 8-Series

is back after a two-decade

absence. The first model to

arrive is the M850i coupe with

a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8

under the hood producing 523

horsepower and 553 pound-feet

of torque. A sprint to 60 miles

per hour takes just 3.6 seconds,

according to BMW. Expect

convertible, Gran Coupe and M8

models to follow.

BASE PRICE: $112,895

OUR OPINION: The BMW 8-Series

is the automaker’s new range-

topping car in its lineup, offering

luxury and performance in one

package.

BMW I8 ROADSTERHIGHLIGHTS: BMW spins off

a convertible version of its

otherworldly looking i8, while

also giving the hybrid more

power and battery capacity.

BASE PRICE: $148,495

OUR OPINION: The most sci-fi car

on the road, the i8 drives as fun

as it looks. The drop-top makes

that experience even more

visceral.

BMW X5HIGHLIGHTS: The fourth-

generation BMW X5 bows with

more to offer. BMW added more

technology, safety features and

amenities than ever before.

The X5 is stately in design both

inside and out. Under the hood

is either a turbocharged 3.0-liter

inline-six or a twin-turbocharged

4.4-liter V8 deepening on the

trim. The six-cylinder makes 355

horsepower while the V8 makes

456 hp.

BASE PRICE: $60,700

OUR OPINION: Large, luxurious

and powerful, the 2019 BMW X5

offers it all.

BMW Z4HIGHLIGHTS: After a three-year

hiatus, the BMW Z4 returns,

this time in collaboration with

Toyota. The new roadster retains

its sleek styling, taking many

design cues from the latest

BMW vehicles. The Z4 will

come in two trims—30i and

M40i. The 30i will come with a

turbocharged 2.0-liter making

255 horsepower and 295 pound-

feet of torque. The M40i will

pack a turbocharged 3.0-liter

inline-six engine producing

382 hp and 369 pound-feet of

torque. Sadly, there will be no

manual option. A ZF eight-speed

automatic is the only available

gearbox.

BASE PRICE: $55,000 (estimated)

spritely Z4 is a welcomed sight.

We have dibs on the M40i.

CADILLAC CT6HIGHLIGHTS: Cadillac adds a

V-Sport model to the lineup,

injecting the large, traditional

luxury sedan with a big dose of

muscle—550-hp of twin-turbo V8

muscle.

BASE PRICE: $51,490

OUR OPINION: There’s not much

to complain about a large

American luxury sedan, so long

as you know what to expect. But

the V-Sport changes the whole

equation, and we are just fine

with that!

CADILLAC XT4HIGHLIGHTS: The XT4 is a

reasonably priced luxury

crossover that takes Cadillac’s

best design features and distills

them into a handsome-looking

crossover. The architecture is all-

new, with a turbocharged 2.0-liter

providing thrust.

BASE PRICE: $35,790

OUR OPINION: In a world where

the crossover is king, the 2019

XT4 is a much-needed addition to

Cadillac’s car-centric lineup.

CHEVROLET CAMAROHIGHLIGHTS: Lineup updates

include the addition of a 1LE

package on base model Camaros,

which adds all the familiar 1LE

track goodies: thicker anti-roll

bars, sport-tuned dampers,

beefier brakes and larger 20-inch

summer rubber. Also, the SS now

gets a 10-speed automatic.

BASE PRICE: $26,495

OUR OPINION: Thank you, Chevy,

for another track-happy Camaro!

Can’t have too many 1LEs.

CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1HIGHLIGHTS: The Corvette ZR1 is

the (current) pinnacle of Chevy

performance. The supercharged

6.2-liter V8 produces 755

horsepower and 715 pound-feet

of torque, which helps it compete

against supercars two or three

times its price.

BASE PRICE: $123,090

OUR OPINION: The return of the

ZR1 puts fear in the likes of

Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini.

CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500HIGHLIGHTS: For Chevy, the

Silverado 1500 is an important

player. It’s a sales monster

that rakes in profits. The new

design inside and out, and new

powertrains give customers a

variety of options so they can buy

the truck that’s right for them.

BASE PRICE: $29,795

OUR OPINION: It’s a truck packed

with technology and luxury

depending on what options you

select. It hauls and tows with

ease.

FERRARI 812 SUPERFASTHIGHLIGHTS: Love or hate the

Superfast name, the Ferrari 812

is an Italian stunner, replacing

the F12berlinetta. Under

the hood is a 6.5-liter V12

producing an astounding 789

horsepower. Power goes to the

rear wheels through a seven-

speed dual-clutch automatic.

BASE PRICE: $335,275

OUR OPINION: It’s a

789-horsepower Ferrari with

looks to match. We’ll take two.

FERRARI PORTOFINOHIGHLIGHTS: Unlike the 812

Superfast, the Ferrari Portofino,

which replaces the California,

is all about delivering a superb

green touring experience. Power

comes from a twin-turbocharged

3.9-liter V8 making 591

horsepower and 413 pound-feet

of torque.

BASE PRICE: $215,000

OUR OPINION: The Portofino

blends Ferrari’s penchant

for performance with luxury

and open-air driving into one

attractive package.

FORD RANGERHIGHLIGHTS: The new Ford

Ranger, a return to the

midsize truck segment for the

automaker, is a big departure

from its predecessor that

disappeared in 2011. The new

truck is ready to compete with

the Chevy Colorado and Toyota

Tacoma. Power comes from a

turbocharged 2.3-liter four-

cylinder paired with a 10-speed

automatic.

BASE PRICE: $25,395

OUR OPINION: It’s about time

Ford resurrected the Ranger

nameplate for a new generation

as consumers flock to pickups

of all sizes.

GENESIS G70HIGHLIGHTS: The addition of the

Genesis G70 gives the Genesis

brand serious performance

credibility. The 3.3-liter twin-

turbo V6 produces a stout 365

horsepower and 376 pound-

feet of torque, rocketing the

luxury sedan to 60 mph in an

estimated 4.5 seconds. A turbo

2.0-liter is available with a six-

speed manual sending power to

the rear wheels.

BASE PRICE: $35,895

OUR OPINION: The

365-horsepower mill is

astounding, while the addition

of a manual gearbox with the

turbo 2.0-liter is impressive

considering many automakers

today opt for automatic

transmissions and nothing

more.

GMC SIERRAHIGHLIGHTS: The GMC Sierra gets

basically everything its Silverado

platform-mate gets, and the option

of three things the Chevy doesn’t:

the MultiPro tailgate, which offers

six different transformations; a

carbon-fiber bed; and adaptive

ride-control dampers.

BASE PRICE: $35,995

OUR OPINION: The GMC Sierra

provides a noticeable bump in

luxury over the Silverado.

Honestly, the MultiPro tailgate

is what sold us.

HONDA INSIGHT HIGHLIGHTS: If you glanced at the

Honda Insight, you might mistake

it for just any ol’ Honda sedan.

However, under the attractive sheet

metal is a hybrid powertrain. A

1.5-liter engine pairs with Honda’s

two-motor hybrid drive system and

a lithium-ion battery pack, producing

151 horsepower and 197 pound-

feet of torque combined.

BASE PRICE: $23,725

OUR OPINION: The new Honda

Insight looks miles ahead of its

predecessor, which should help

customers ease into the hybrid

lifestyle.

HONDA PASSPORTHIGHLIGHTS: The Passport is back

at Honda, once again in the form of

a five passenger, off-road capable

SUV sized between the CR-V and

three-row Pilot. The only engine

available is a 3.5-liter V6 making

280 horsepower mated to a nine-

speed automatic transmission.

Honda’s i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive

system is optional, using active

torque vectoring to send up to 70

percent of the torque to the rear

axle and 100 percent of the torque

to either the left or right wheel.

BASE PRICE: $28,000 (est.)

OUR OPINION: If this Passport can

evoke feelings of the original,

count us fans.

HYUNDAI KONA EVHIGHLIGHTS: The Hyundai Kona is

the automaker’s latest crossover,

debuting last year. However, for

2019, Hyundai introduced an EV

version offering up to 292 miles

of range with a larger battery. The

base model provides up to 186

miles of range on a single charge.

BASE PRICE: $37,000 (estimated)

OUR OPINION: The Hyundai Kona

industry—and it looks stellar.

HYUNDAI NEXOHIGHLIGHTS: Hyundai is going

all-in on alternative energy

sources, and the Nexo uses

fuel cell technology. It replaces

the Tucson fuel cell vehicle,

offering up to 370 miles of

range between refueling. The

fuel cell stack pairs with a

40-kilowatt battery to produce

180 horsepower and up to 290

pound-feet of torque.

BASE PRICE: $55,000 (estimated)

OUR OPINION: The Nexo’s limited

availability means getting to

drive one will be difficult.

HYUNDAI PALISADEHIGHLIGHTS: The Palisade is

Hyundai’s new flagship SUV and

largest, sharing a platform with

the Kia Telluride. It’s 3 inches

longer, 3.6 inches wider and

2.4 inches taller than Hyundai’s

own Santa Fe XL, and it also has

a 4.0-inch-longer wheelbase.

The eight-seat Palisade has a

3.8-liter Atkinson-cycle V6 (291

horsepower and 262 pound-foot)

and all-wheel drive.

BASE PRICE: $33,000 (est.)

OUR OPINION: We are fond of

Hyundai’s lineup of SUVs. The

interior looked fantastic in

Palisades on the Hyundai stand

in LA.

HYUNDAI SANTA FEHIGHLIGHTS: The 2019 Hyundai

Santa Fe ushers in a new

platform, making it bigger, wider

and longer than its predecessor.

It competes against other

compact crossovers such as the

Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue.

A larger, three-row Santa Fe XL

is also available.

BASE PRICE: $26,545

OUR OPINION: The new look, a

plethora of engine choices and

a larger footprint should put it to

the top of the shopping list for

customers.

HYUNDAI VELOSTERHIGHLIGHTS: Hyundai’s funky

four-door hatch continues

sporting a 147-horsepower four-

cylinder engine. A turbo 1.6-liter

ups horsepower to 201, while

the high-performance Veloster N

makes 275 horsepower. Hyundai

is positioning the Veloster to

be sportier than the outgoing

model.

BASE PRICE: $19,385

OUR OPINION: The funky design

still intrigues us; however, the

275-horsepower N version is

what we’re excited to drive.

INFINITI QX50HIGHLIGHTS: The QX50 is all-new

for 2019 with a much-needed

redesign inside and out. It’s

finally a compelling competitor

to vehicles such as the BMW X3

and Audi Q5. Power comes from

a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine

producing 268 horsepower and

280 pound-feet of torque.

BASE PRICE: $37,545

OUR OPINION: The redesigned

crossover finally has the looks

inside and out that match the

Infiniti badge on the grille.

JAGUAR I-PACEHIGHLIGHTS: The Jaguar I-Pace

is just the latest entry in the EV

crossover segment, competing

with the Tesla Model X. It

offers up to an estimated 240

miles of range. The I-Pace fits

right in with Jaguar’s other

crossovers—E-Pace and F-Pace.

BASE PRICE: $70,495

OUR OPINION: The $70,000 price

tag is a tad difficult to swallow,

but it’s over $10,000 cheaper

than the Model X.

JEEP GLADIATORHIGHLIGHTS: After hearing Jeep

Gladiator rumors for a year, it

debuted at the LA show. The

new pickup is all Wrangler

underneath, so it has 11.1

inches of ground clearance and

gets power from the corporate

3.6-liter V6 making 285

horsepower and 260 pound-

foot; a 3.0-liter turbodiesel

arrives in 2020. A six-speed

manual is standard, an eight-

speed automatic is optional.

Engine stop/start and push-

button start are both standard.

BASE PRICE: $35,000

OUR OPINION: Finally! We’re

betting it’s worth the wait.

KIA FORTEHIGHLIGHTS: The third-generation

Kia Forte is all-new, growing

in size over the outgoing

model. It features sportier, Kia

Stinger-inspired styling, offering

features such as Apple CarPlay

and Android Auto as standard

equipment along with an eight-

inch touchscreen. The engine

is a 2.0-liter mill making 147

horsepower and 132 pound-feet

of torque.

BASE PRICE: $18,585

KIA K900HIGHLIGHTS: The Kia K900

rides on an extended Kia

Stinger platform, giving it

some excellent handling

chops. Power comes from one

engine—a twin-turbocharged

3.3-liter V6 making 365

horsepower and 376 pound-

feet of torque. Kia estimates

the K900 hits 60 miles per

hour in 5.7 seconds, which is

quick for the large sedan.

BASE PRICE: $60,895

OUR OPINION: It’s a luxury

sedan wrapped in Kia

packaging.

LEXUS ESHIGHLIGHTS: The Lexus ES gets

a huge redesign for 2019,

adopting Lexus’ polarizing

design language—massive

grille, sharp front-end styling

and swooping sides. This

is the automaker’s best-

selling sedan, so Lexus had

to keep returning customers

satisfied while attracting new

buyers. The ES 350 sports a

302-horsepower V6, while the

ES 300h pairs a four-cylinder

engine with an electric motor.

BASE PRICE: $40,625

OUR OPINION: The Lexus design

language may turn off some,

but there’s a reason this is

the company’s best-selling

sedan—quiet luxury.

LEXUS UXHIGHLIGHTS: The UX is Lexus’

latest crossover offering,

competing against other

compacts such as the BMW

X1, Mercedes GLA and Audi

Q3. There are two powertrain

choices—a 169-horsepower

four-cylinder or a hybrid that

combines an electric motor

with a four-cylinder engine.

BASE PRICE: $33,025

OUR OPINION: The Lexus UX

is a stunning entry into an

already crowded—but still

growing—segment.

LINCOLN AVIATORHIGHLIGHTS: Lincoln is bringing

the Aviator name back on a

good-looking new three-row

crossover packing up to 450

horsepower and 600 pound-

feet of torque. That makes it

the most powerful production

Lincoln ever, and it produces

these numbers courtesy of

a twin-turbo V6 with plug-in

hybrid assist. The plug-in is

one of two powertrain options,

the other being a 3.0-liter

twin-turbo V6 producing an

even 400 horsepower and 400

pound-feet of torque. Both

powertrains have a 10-speed

automatic transmission.

BASE PRICE: $50,000 (est.)

LINCOLN NAUTILUSHIGHLIGHTS: The 2019 Lincoln

Nautilus isn’t an all-new vehicle.

In 2016, Lincoln debuted a

redesigned MKX, which further

differentiated it from its

Ford Edge sibling. For 2019,

Lincoln gave the crossover

a comprehensive mid-cycle

refresh, retiring the MKX

nameplate for the Nautilus. A

turbocharged 2.0-liter or twin-

turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 are

available.

BASE PRICE: $41,335

OUR OPINION: The Lincoln looks

stunning, and the return to

real names for its models is

a welcomed change from the

alphabet soup of today’s luxury

vehicles.

MAZDA3HIGHLIGHTS: Among the new

Mazda3 highlights is a new

steel architecture incorporating

more high-strength steel, but it

weighs less and costs less. The

car again comes as a four-door

sedan or five-door hatch; three

Skyactiv-G gasoline engines

include 1.5-, 2.0- and 2.5-liter

fours, with a Skyactiv-D 1.8-liter

diesel four and the 2.0-liter

Skyactiv-X spark-controlled

compression ignition (SPCCI)

gasoline engine rounding out the

powerplant choices.

BASE PRICE: $19,000 (est.)

OUR OPINION: With the ranks of

fun compacts dwindling by the

day, we are grateful this favorite

is marching on.

MERCEDES-AMG GT 4-DOOR COUPEHIGHLIGHTS: The AMG GT

4-Door Coupe is the ultimate

performance sedan, designed

by the mad geniuses at AMG.

A twin-turbocharged V8 engine

makes 577 horsepower and

590 pound-feet of torque or 630

horsepower and 664 pound-feet

of torque depending on trim.

It’s faster to 60 mph than the

Corvette ZR1, McLaren 570S

and its own AMG GT R coupe.

MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASSHIGHLIGHTS: The 2019 A-Class

is an all-new entry-level offering

for the brand. It slots beneath

the CLA-Class model and will

compete with the like of the Audi

A3. The A220 is front-wheel drive

while the A220 4Matic offers all-

wheel drive.

BASE PRICE: $30,000 (estimated)

OUR OPINION: The entry-level

Mercedes looks stylish and is

packed with features.

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS-CLASSHIGHLIGHTS: The CLS made waves

when it debuted in 2004 due to

its coupe-like design, spawning

an entirely new automotive

segment. For 2019, the CLS

continues with its swoopy

appearance, updating the design

with modern Mercedes design

cues. Power comes from a new

inline-six engine—the first from

Mercedes in 20 years—that

has an electric component and

a turbocharger. Output is 362

horsepower and 369 pound-feet

of torque.

BASE PRICE: $75,000 (estimated)

OUR OPINION: The CLS is a sharp

sedan with its raked roofline and

long hood. We’re excited about

the return of the straight-six.

MERCEDES-BENZ G-CLASSHIGHLIGHTS: Mercedes tiptoed

lightly when it came to

redesigning the G-Class. It’s a

classic with a cult-like following

thanks to its boxy design that

dates back to 1979. The 2019

G-Class is all-new inside and out,

even if the differences are hard

to spot on the exterior. However,

once inside, the changes are

more evident. The interior is far

more luxurious than the outgoing

model, with modern design

touches borrowed from the latest

Mercedes vehicles.

NISSAN ALTIMAHIGHLIGHTS: The 2019 Altima

gets a total redesign, borrowing

heavily from the larger Maxima.

The 2019 Altima sports a

turbocharged 2.0-liter and

2.5-liter engine, the first major

powertrain upgrades in more

than 15 years. And for the first

time in the States, the Altima

gets optional all-wheel drive.

BASE PRICE: $24,645

OUR OPINION: Sedans are a dying

breed, but models such as the

Nissan Altima won’t go away

without a fight.

PORSCHE 911HIGHLIGHTS: Called the 992

internally, the next-generation

911 is 1.73 inches wider and

about an inch longer than

the outgoing model, riding

on the same wheelbase. The

turbocharged flat-sixes carry

over, but the Carrera S gets

a 23-horsepower power bump

to 443 horsepower, good for a

3.3-second 0-60 mph time.

BASE PRICE: $95,000 (est.)

OUR OPINION: More power, same

great looks. The next couple

of years will be fun as all the

variants start rolling out.

PORSCHE CAYENNEHIGHLIGHTS: The Porsche

Cayenne is a Porsche purists

love to hate, but it’s helped

finance the company’s litany

of performance models. The

redesigned Cayenne looks

much like the outgoing model,

but Porsche did a lot to give it

an improved design inside and

out. The standard engine is a

turbocharged 3.0-liter making

340 horsepower and 332 pound-

feet of torque. The Cayenne

Turbo packs a twin-turbo V8

making 550 horsepower and 567

pound-feet of torque.

BASE PRICE: $66,750

OUR OPINION: The Cayenne isn’t

the most exciting Porsche to

date, but it sells like gangbusters

and allows the automaker to

build cars like the Porsche 911

GT2 RS. Quit complaining.

RAM 1500HIGHLIGHTS: Everything about

the 2019 Ram 1500 is better

than before. The design is

sleeker, both inside and out. It’s

more comfortable, lighter and

stronger, too. Out of the gate,

it’ll come with a 5.7-liter Hemi

making 385 horsepower, but the

eTorque V6 with a 48-volt battery

pack and motor generator is the

more interesting engine choice.

BASE PRICE: $33,490

Ram 1500 hopes to keep fans

loyal while siphoning sales from

Chevy and Ford.

ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINANHIGHLIGHTS: SUVs are goldmines right now, and Rolls-Royce isn’t

missing out. The Cullinan, which borrows many design cues

inside and out from the Phantom, looks stately with its high

ride height. Like other Rolls models, bespoke customization is

available for an additional cost. Power comes from a 6.7-liter

V12 making 563 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Top

speed is 155 miles per hour.

BASE PRICE: $330,350

OUR OPINION: The perfect vehicle for those who want Rolls-Royce

luxury in a high-riding SUV package. Grey Poupon not included.

SUBARU ASCENTHIGHLIGHTS: The Ascent is important for Subaru. It’s the

automaker’s first three-row model since the Tribeca with

enough seating for up to eight people (and 19 drinks). Standard

all-wheel drive pairs with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine

making 260 horsepower.

BASE PRICE: $32,970

OUR OPINION: The three-row Ascent should woo buyers with its

standard all-wheel-drive system and competitive pricing.

SUBARU FORESTERHIGHLIGHTS: While the 2019 Forester looks much like the one it

replaces, Subaru made substantial changes underneath. The

Forester rides on the company’s new global architecture, which

also underpins the Crosstrek and Ascent. Under the hood sits

an upgraded 2.5-liter flat-four engine producing 182 horsepower

and 176 pound-feet of torque—an increase of 12 and 2,

respectively.

are a 310-horsepower V6 making

267 pound-feet of torque or a

215-hp hybrid.

BASE PRICE: $36,395

OUR OPINION: If you’re in the

market for a full-size sedan, why

look anywhere else?

TOYOTA COROLLA HATCHBACKHIGHLIGHTS: The Toyota Corolla

hatchback (née Corolla iM) is

packed with standard features

in a surprisingly sporty package.

Standard equipment includes

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. The

Corolla features Entune 3.0 with

an eight-inch touchscreen and

Apple CarPlay. Power comes from

a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine

making 168 horsepower and 151

pound-feet of torque.

BASE PRICE: $20,910

OUR OPINION: The Toyota Corolla

sheds its boring and beige

personality for an attractive and

well-equipped hatchback.

TOYOTA RAV4HIGHLIGHTS: Toyota redesigned

the RAV4 knowing it was the

fourth best-selling vehicle in the

U.S. last year. The Japanese

automaker decided to make

the RAV4 even more appealing

to customers by offering more

trim levels, adding more safety

features and giving it some

rugged exterior aesthetics. A

203-horsepower engine pairs

with an eight-speed automatic

gearbox. A hybrid powertrain

makes 219 horsepower.

BASE PRICE: $26,545

OUR OPINION: The RAV4’s

new, rugged look and litany of

standard features make this

crossover king.

TOYOTA SUPRAHIGHLIGHTS: Toyota and BMW

teamed up to design the Supra/

Z4, sharing many components.

The likely powertrain choices

are a turbocharged 2.0-liter or

a turbocharged inline-six. Power

will likely route through an eight-

speed automatic gearbox. A

Available options include premium

BASE PRICE: $19,440

OUR OPINION: The new Jetta is a

return to form for the German

compact car, offering engaging

driving dynamics in a subdued

package.

VOLVO S60/V60HIGHLIGHTS: The S60 sedan and

V60 wagon are staples in Volvo’s

lineup. For 2019, both receive a

major design overhaul, borrowing

heavily from the larger S90/

V90. The sedan comes in three

trims—Momentum, R-Design,

and Inscription—while the wagon

comes in two—Momentum and

Inscription. Horsepower ranges

from 250 to 400 thanks to the

T8 plug-in hybrid trim.

BASE PRICE: $35,800

OUR OPINION: You can’t go wrong

vehicles packed with luxury and

features; how much stuff you

2019 II BUYER’S GUIDE FROM THE EXPERTS AT AUTOWEEK

36 I I 2019

It was an overnight sensation – leapfrogging other U.S. auto

shows in the larger cities of Chicago, Los Angeles and New York

in terms of new product unveilings and news media coverage.

Over the next decade, NAIAS joined the ranks of the most

prestigious global auto shows in Frankfurt, Paris and Tokyo,

attracting more than 5,000 journalists to Detroit year after year,

one-third of them from foreign countries.

Giving a huge boost to that inaugural 1989 NAIAS were Japan’s

top automakers, Toyota and Nissan, choosing Detroit as the

place to debut their new luxury brands Lexus and Infiniti.

Now DADA is planning to disrupt the global auto show circuit

once again, moving the annual NAIAS from January in 2019 to

June dates in 2020. The aim is to create a festival vibe both

inside and outside the confines of Cobo Center.

It’s a bold move to transform and energize the auto show

experience for consumers during a period of radical change in

the world’s transportation industry. Traditional carmakers are

reassessing how they design, reveal and market vehicles in the

digital age – and that means auto shows must adapt to survive

and thrive.

Opportunity: ‘Automotive Lollapalooza’ When Detroit’s auto show moves from January to June, organizers see potential for a festival vibe.

By Tom Walsh for Crain Content Studio

2019 II OPPORTUNITY: ‘AUTOMOTIVE LOLLAPALOOZA’

Thirty years ago, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association shook up the world’s auto show scene, launching the newly renamed North American International Auto Show in Detroit’s newly expanded Cobo Center.

38 I I 2019

in Michigan but the show would still fall on the heels of

European shows in the fall.

This past July, they settled on June 2020 as the new date, with

encouragement from The Big 3.

An automotive Lollapalooza?Ever since taking the Detroit show global 30 years ago, DADA

leaders have regularly visited other auto shows around the

world, keeping tabs on trends and new ideas.

Last year Alberts traveled to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in

West Sussex, England, which features historic car competitions

along with motor shows that offer both viewing and driving cars

on the course, attracting more than 100,000 visitors.

And this coming March, Alberts and DADA show chairman Doug

North, of North Brothers Ford, plan to visit Austin, Texas for

South by Southwest (SXSW), the annual mashup of festivals

and conferences that began with music, expanded to film and

interactive technologies and now includes branding activations

staged by technology, automotive and fashion companies.

“I think what we’re realizing, looking at Goodwood and

SXSW and all these places that are doing incredibly well and

growing, it’s a sign of the times,” said Alberts. “People want

to be outside with the technology and the activations and the

engagement, and not have so much of a static show anymore.

In the long run, it’s not about the big display, it’s about the

product.”

The move to June 2020 allows Detroit to create a monthlong

automotive festival, starting with the Grand Prix races on

Belle Isle and continuing to the International Freedom Festival

fireworks on the riverfront.

“You couldn’t have done this 10 years ago; today you can do

it,” Alberts said, alluding to the revival of Detroit’s city core with

new retail, restaurants and investment. “I think we’re in a great

place with Detroit to show it off.”

Not everyone, of course, is ecstatic about the big move. It

creates some gaping holes in the winter-month calendars for

Cobo Center and many hotels that have relied on NAIAS-related

spending for their first-quarter revenue budgets.

But Larry Alexander, president and CEO of Detroit Metro

Convention & Visitors Bureau, summed it up this way:

“I think the real message here is that people should not be

afraid of growth. We have an opportunity to do something

different that can be even bigger and better – and just because

we’ve done things one way for so many years doesn’t mean we

have to continue to do it that way.

“This is a different destination now and I think we have to be on

the leading edge and make it grow, and let the world know that

we are here to compete on a global scale.”

2019 II OPPORTUNITY: ‘AUTOMOTIVE LOLLAPALOOZA’

2019 I I 37

“If you do anything long enough – and 30 years is a long time

–the world is going to change, and not just a little bit,” said

Rod Alberts, executive director of the DADA. “That is what

we’re experiencing now. It’s clear as a bell in our mind, with

ride-sharing, autonomous cars, we’re on the cusp of big market

changes. I think there is a point in time where you can’t just

make small adjustments anymore. You’ve got to make a major

adjustment to address the future of where the industry is

headed and what people want. And that’s what the June move is

all about.”

Signs of a coming shakeup among auto shows became evident

during the 2009-10 recession, when Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki,

Rolls Royce, Land Rover, Ferrari and Porsche were among those

missing at NAIAS. U.S. and European carmakers were no-shows

at Tokyo in 2009, and Japan’s major show hasn’t regained its

stature since, as China’s market and auto shows grew rapidly.

Recently, some French automakers chose not to exhibit at

Frankfurt, German firms skipped the Paris show, and Mercedes,

Audi and BMW chose not to exhibit at Detroit this year. Another

irritant for Detroit has been proximity to the big annual CES

consumer electronics show in Las Vegas – a week before

NAIAS – where auto executives began showing off new

technology advances.

Claude Molinari, general manager of Cobo Center, applauded

the DADA’s aggressive move.

“I really appreciate that Rod Alberts and the DADA play offense.

They attack challenges as opposed to playing defense,” Molinari

said. “Staying in January and risking that the show falls apart is

not a viable option.”

Whatever form the show takes in June 2020, it will be hard

to beat the impact of the first NAIAS in 1989 that catapulted

the Motor City into the top tier of glitzy global automotive

extravaganzas.

“It was perfect timing back in 1989,” said Alberts. “The nineties

were very good economically. It was time for Detroit to kind of

claim that international stature.”

During its 1989 debut as a global show, NAIAS drew 850

journalists – up from 200 the previous year – and evolved

steadily into something bigger and better over the next two

decades. The black-tie Charity Preview grew from raising

$300,000 for four charities to raising $7 million for 10 charities.

The NAIAS also added The Gallery, an ultra-luxury automotive

event, and AutoMobili-D, an inside look at future mobility

technologies.

“This 2019 event will obviously be a 30th anniversary show,

but also the start of the transformation to what’s coming in

2020,” said Bill Golling, owner of Detroit area Buick, Toyota

and Fiat Chrysler dealerships and this year’s show chairman

for the DADA.

Why move the show? Why now?Several industry trends drove the decision to move the Detroit

show from Michigan’s frigid January to a more balmy spot on

the calendar.

There is no longer a consistent cadence to new model launches

late in the calendar year. Today new cars and trucks are unveiled

in a host of singular debut events anytime around the world.

As budgets tightened during the Great Recession, automakers

cut back on extravagant concept cars and displays, to spread

marketing dollars across more events and social media

channels.

Costs for NAIAS exhibitors could drop significantly as the time

from move-in to tear-down at Cobo shrinks from two or three

months for a January show – due to weather delays and holiday

downtime and overtime – to about three weeks in warmer

months.

Following the 2018 NAIAS, DADA leadership intensified

discussions about exploring a change in future show dates.

“We knew that we had to become a more experiential, activation

kind of show and the only way to do that was to move to a

month where we could expand on that opportunity,” Alberts

said. “So we started talking to all our stakeholders – sponsors

and suppliers and vehicle manufacturers.”

They looked at every month on the calendar. One option

considered was October; weather would be milder than January

in Michigan but the show would still fall on the heels of

For decades, PNC has provided resources to seed ideas, foster development and encourage leadership in nonprofit organizations where imagination and determination enhance people’s lives every day. To build on this commitment, PNC developed PNC Grow Up Great, a $350 million, multiyear initiative to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. The PNC Foundation has earmarked funds for grants to nonprofit organizations that work to improve children’s school readiness through quality early childhood education, with an emphasis on underserved communities. By focusing its support in these critical areas, PNC hopes to positively impact the lives of children, families and communities throughout its corporate footprint.
