Grammar Tutor

Grammar is the essence of every language. Therefore, grammatical competence is an integral part of language learning and success in school. However, due to its technical nature, grammar has always been considered a dry, dreary and difficult area of language learning.

This book is written to help students in vocabulary acquisition. Each unit begins with a composition followed by a vocabulary list that highlights and provides the meanings of the more challenging words as they are used in the composition.

Subsequently, students are tested on these words and their understanding of these words in varied exercises that may take the form of cloze passages, multiple-choice questions, word riddles and crossword puzzles. The varied structure of the exercises aims to retain students interest and ensure that they are not too heavily taxed with overly-heavy work.

It is hoped that the use of this book will help students expand and retain a wider corpus of the English vocabulary and indirectly improve student’s skill in composition writing.

Classroom English Vocabulary / Grammar / Comprehension Cloze

With the varied cloze passage exercises, the aim of this book is to enable pupils to acquire new vocabulary words so as to increase their word bank, which in turn will aid them in their cloze passage skills, as well as writing skills. The book also aims to help pupils boost their confidence in their learning of English as they sharpen their English in three principal areas, namely:

• Literal language: Words and phrases in their specific or original language, without additional or derived meanings.

• Figurative language: Words and phrases which are to be interpreted, not in their original meaning, but in a derived meaning.

• Idiomatic language: Words and phrases which are used not in their original meaning, but in a figurative sense, which have become so commonly used and standardised that they have come to be known as idioms. With these aims in mind, this book serves as a useful resource for teacher, parents, as well as tutors, who are looking to help pupils develop a stronger foundation in English.

This series aims to help students write creatively in composition writing. Writing compositions with the use of the 5 senses adds depth to student’s work. It equips students for the examinations by building up a brilliant vocabulary list. The learning is a gradual process that spans from Book 1 to 6. For comprehensive learning, it is recommended that students follow the learning curve from Book 1 to 6.

The topics and phrases from the 5 senses in this book have been formulated after careful analysis of what students need to excel in compositions. A picture is not two-dimensional; it is continuously evolving, just like watching a movie. Hence, this book hopes students to empower students to use not just their eyes but also to appreciate a picture with their ears, sense of touch, taste and smell. This series teaches students how to breathe life into a picture with their writing. Contextual paragraphs are also provided to illustrate the usage of the 5 senses phrases.

A good composition requires an interesting plot and vivid description.

A storyline is only as good as how well the writer is able to pen the details onto the paper.

Sensational Writing © is a revolutionary and powerful strategy that coaches pupils to write with the 5 senses and not just with the mind, bringing readers into their compositions by stimulating all their senses.

Writing is an Imaginative art where words materialise Imagination,

like a piece of beautiful artwork ofprecise strokes painted gingerly

with a variant of colours.

Phrasal verbs are a basic and very important part of everyday English vocabulary. In order to understand, speak, read and write correct English, it is important to learn and master the use ofphrasal verbs. There are hundreds of English phrasal verbs and their meanings cannot always be deduced from the meanings of the original verbs themselves. This is because phrasal verbsmay have a literal and/or an idiomatic meaning. Additionally, many phrasal verbs have more than one meaning. This can be frustrating for students.

We have listed in Zoom In Phrasal Verbs those that, in our experience, are the most useful for classroom use. The phrasal verbs are listed in alphabetical order so each one is easy to find. The meaning(s) of each phrasal verb is/are explained, and examples of their use are given.

We strongly recommend this book as an indispensable guide for this difficult, but important aspect of English grammar.

This book is intended as a general reference for pupils studying English.

The author has kept the notes and explanation as simple as possible. However, no effort is spared to make the contents thorough and comprehensive. The notes are followed by a number of integral exercises useful for language improvement and evaluation.

The activities in this book can be used at home or in school. At home, children can do the activities to further develop their understanding and the thinking skills they have learnt in school. In school, children can do the activities in groups or they can take them home for extra practice in the thinking skills they have learnt in class.

This book consists of 25 Brainteasers, 20 Open-ended Non-routine Problem-solving Questions and 15 Enrichment Activities to motivate children in their learning. For some Brainteasers, cut-out tiles and puzzle blocks are provided for the children. This “hands-on” experience helps children to solve the respective problems.

When a child is ready to begin each brainteaser or activity, find him or her a quiet place to work. Read the instructions on each page with the child and be sure the directions are understood. You may want to let the child work through the first problem on the page and allow him to tell you his problem.

Describing their work in their own words helps children make the idea clearer in their minds and lets you know what they are thinking. If a child gets a different answer from that in the answer key, accept that answer if the child gives a reasonable explanation.

This book is a compact guide to English Language usage, grammar and vocabulary. It contains manyauthentic and outstanding features aimed at improving the comprehension, writing and language skillsof students.

It is an essential companion for English Language students in the upper primary and secondary schools. The powerful lists of vocabulary reference with vivid examples are immensely useful in creative writing and compositions. It also provides quick revision before tests and examinations. This book will prove to be an indispensable reference tool for all students in their study of the English Language.

Focus and Think ScienceThe highlight of Focus & Think Science series is to help pupils to know what to focus on and enhance their thinking process. When they are posed with a question, pupils are expected to identify the focus of the question and narrow in on the possible answer or what the question requires of the pupils.

For each question, there is a box that highlights the main point of the question. By going through this process, pupils will be directed towards answering the questions correctly.

The box begins with the Focus of the question. The pupils is led to discover what the question wants the pupil to focus upon. The pupil can base it on the key words in the questions and/or the diagram/picture. Using this process, the pupil will eliminate the distractors in the question and align himself/herself to the question.

The second pointer is Think. Based in the Focus of the question, there are some guiding questions that help the pupil to think and narrow down the available options. This helps to direct the pupil’s thought process towards the correct answer. Focus and Think Science P3

A noun can be singular or plural in number. Nouns which have a plural form are countable and nouns which do not have a plural form are non-countable.

COUNTABLE NOUNS

Countable Nouns are individual objects which can be counted such as people, animals, places. They are usually common nouns.e.g. magazines, Koreans, children

A countable noun can be both singular (e.g. a shirt, a boy) or plural (e.g. many shirts, two boys).

Use the singular form of the verb with singular countable noun:

Examples: The boy is sleeping. There is an apple on the plate.

Use the plural form of the verb with plural countable noun.

Examples:The boys are sleeping. There are apples on the plate.

Collective nouns are countable.

Examples: The students attended four classes today.New York is home to several orchestras.

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Uncountable nouns are abstract nouns that we cannot divide into separate segments to count them.

e.g. information, luggage

1.2 CROWS

Crows are black birds famous for their adaptability and intelligence, and for their loud, harsh “caw”. A group of these birds is also known as “a murder of crows” – a hint to the notorious reputation they have for damaging crops. These versatile birds can be found all worldwide in a variety of habitats. Crows are known to devise ingenious ways of getting food and surviving in urban environments. They use and make tools, and have amazing communication skills. For example, when a crow encounters a person who has been cruel or mean to it, it will teach other crows how to identify the culprit – and they never forget a face!

A pen is mightier than a sword.

This book will equip students with the skills they need to excel in Essay Writing. To become outstanding writers, students need to understand the various types of essay questions - they are namely: Descriptive, Narrative, Personal Recount, Expository, Argumentative and Discursive. As for situational writing, students are typically tested on formal and informal letters, speech, report writing, article writing and proposal writing. It is important that students have clear-out and detailed understanding of the unique characteristics of each category of essays.

In this book, students will be guided by explanations to help them comprehend the significant characteristics that define each category of writing. In addition, a series of questions have been exclusively formulated to help students gain insights to plan and write the essays in the respective categories. Every single essay is modelled after commonly tested examination questions. Every model essay has been carefully crafted to teach students a step-by-step thought process in planning the essay, before one commences to write the essay.

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

It was the school holidays and I stood outside the glass panels of the amusement arcade, trying to peer through the windows to catch a glimpse of what was going on inside. However, it was difficult to look into the arcade because the windows were tinted. That added some mystical charisma to the place. A youthful vibe seemed to pervade the entire area, as muffled dance tunes and rambunctious chatter flitted from the entrance of the arcade. After taking a quick glance at the white A4-sized notice on the glass door that read “All students are prohibited from the arcade during school hours and students in uniforms will not be allowed to enter”, I walked into the arcade excitedly as those rules did not apply to me then.

The minute I pushed open the glass doors, I was overwhelmed. It was a place that ran on teenagers’ adrenaline. The arcade had at least 50 standalone gaming machines and over 20 types of different games. The rectangular glass boxes that I first saw while standing outside the arcade turned out to be gaming machines as well. These machines had metallic robotic arms. Players had to control the robotic arms using a joystick to pick up the prizes in the boxes and drop them into the basket in order to win. Other game consoles were decorated with many colourful light bulbs which made the otherwise dull- looking machines look much more interesting. The bright neon lights were programmed to light up at different intervals and in a particular sequence such that they formed different words or figures. Many of the machines could even “talk” to passers-by, frequently throwing out challenging statements like “Take on the mission to fight the terrorists, only if you’re up to it!” Other machines enticed the crowd with the latest billboard tunes. Despite their differences in appearances and sounds produced, all these machines had one common goal: to attract teenagers to slot tokens into the machines.

In the rowdy arcade, the segregation was blatant. The section that flashed hot rouge pink lights attracted female gamers – the dancing queens – who were busy flaunting their flamboyant moves to the techno tunes that were blasting from the machines. Tucked
