Principal’s Comment

Chris O’ConnorBOT Chairperson

Tena KoutouAt the March Board meeting we heard from Judy Buckley, Director of Murihiku Young Parents’ Learning Centre (MYPLC). James Hargest College governs this school and it is a wonderful asset for our community. Sincere credit should be given to Judy and her team for the work they are doing with young women in their care. I truly believe in the power of education to be a transformative experience and the numerous success stories from MYPLC accurately demonstrate what you can achieve with a positive attitude and a quality education. In property news, I am sure staff and students

From the Boardroom

at both campuses are delighted to hear that we are on track for our new boilers to be operational by the start of term two - providing the pump makes it off the water! The school is a busy and dynamic place and I encourage everyone to make the most of the wonderful opportunities to get involved in activities outside the classroom at JHC. It is always fascinating to hear the range of trips and activities Hargest students are heading off on. There really is something for everyone here. Chris O’Connor BOT Chairperson

labour the point, but the academic success of many of our students, who managed to achieve Excellence endorsements with significant time out of the classroom is a testament to both their innate drive, whanau support and adaptability. Students can be very proud of their achievements. Because of the uncertainty last year, we did not hold our traditional Sporting and Cultural Blues Awards. We therefore decided to combine these with our academic excellence awards and the ceremony was richer for the experience. Students at James Hargest College are achieving at the highest level on the national stage. Quinn Hartley who broke a New Zealand record for long jump and Brianna Loan making the National Youth Brass Band are two examples of talented students working hard to achieve their goals. These students are both driven, motivated and humble. They are exemplary role models for our school values in action. Congratulations to all students who were celebrated at this ceremony. It was wonderful to have over 100 parents in attendance to join us in congratulating students on their fine achievements. We have also welcomed parents to meet the teachers at two parents evenings this term. It is always a great opportunity to chat about how the students are settling into the year and how we can support our

families with their educational aspirations for their children. We understand that High School years are often a time of pushing the boundaries and attempting to assert some independence. Sometimes that can result in poor decision making. We are aware of a spike in vaping around our school. This is very concerning and we are being vigilant in checking areas which the students report, are popular for vaping. We need your support to fight back against this vaping epidemic. Studies are increasingly observing chronic harm to hearts and lungs caused by vaping. The fear is of course that we do not yet know exactly how much damage vaping can do over time. We have become aware that students under 18 years of age are easily able to purchase vaping products online. Please talk to your children about this growing issue and try to empower them to fight back against the omnipresent peer pressure.Lastly, with Anzac Day occurring during the term holidays, it is important we remember and pay our respects to all of the men and women who served overseas. At this week and next week’s assemblies our students will be reminded of this with particular focus on Brigadier James Hargest who served in both World Wars. Noho ora mai Mike Newell Principal

Kia ora koutouAs my first Term One as Tumuaki of James Hargest College draws to a close, it is a good time to think about some of the memorable moments which have helped to shape our place. James Hargest students continue to excel across a myriad of endeavours. Our Celebrating Excellence ceremony, held on the 9th of March was a wonderful occasion where the outstanding achievements of our students were showcased to both their peers and our wider community. The accolades presented to our students were vast and signified truly magnificent achievements. Much has been said about the challenges of 2020 and I do not wish to

roles as both a committee member and Treasurer. You are a highly valued member of the team and a big part of why we function so effortlessly.

My thanks must also be directed to Lynsey Stratford (Secretary), as we all know there is plenty of work in the background to make sure everything runs smoothly, so thank you.

A high level of support is required for the December and January Uniform Sales. In particular the January sell out this year was extremely busy, which speaks to the high standard of uniform items we have available for sale.

Alongside the uniforms, over the past year the committee have continued to support the various school activities – including:• Mending, laundering, dry cleaning

organisation, and stock takes of uniforms

• PTA meetings• Running the Yearly Open Day BBQ at

both Senior and Junior Campus

This year we saw the introduction of the Garden Club set up at Junior Campus – which is another exciting PTA venture, a big thanks to Erika for leading the charge here.

Over the last year we have seen the JHC Archives Space set up by Barbara Jones. What a huge amount of work that she has put into this project. Thank you to Barbara for providing the school such a wonderful look at our history, and to now have a dedicated place for the displays.

We are continuing to collate a list of PTA helpers in a database we can call on in for support, as there are several activities that do need the support of the PTA. We now also have a list of instructions and printed guidelines for each of the events, making volunteering easier than ever.

Once again, I thank you all.

Chairperson Report, 16 March 2021I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Committee for your dedication during the 2020 year, and what a year it has been. We have all had to deal with covid, and all the changes and challenges this pandemic brought into our households, work places and of course the school environment.

The PTA appreciate all those that take the time to help support us. Every hour of your time that has been volunteered, helps to create an environment that runs smoothly. Again, in 2020 we saw a lot of new faces join us, and we are all very grateful that you have chosen to support us by joining the Committee. As always with any committee the old saying many hands make light work is true. I would like to see the numbers grow again in 2021, so feel free to invite another JHC parent/caregiver to join us.

I would like to take the time for a special thanks to Sue Mattingly (Treasurer - inset) who has been a great support to me personally – we have set up a

new system for the uniform sales, with Cash and Eftpos available. We stationed ourselves in the front office, on the nights of the sales. This makes the tracking and tracing along with the balancing a more efficient process. So a huge thanks for this and balancing the books for the PTA. I know I speak for you all when I say we will miss you Sue, as we all appreciated your hard work and dedication in your

Kia ora! I’m Ainslie Bruce, the newly elected Chairperson of the PTA. I’m married to Andy and have two daughters at James Hargest; Mackenzie (Year 12) and Riley (Year 11).

I am employed by Barnardoes as the Administrator for the Foster Care Team in Otago and Southland. In my spare time, I’m on the Board for Southland Water Polo, go to the gym and love my early morning walks with my miniature schnauzer, Barney!

I’m so excited to be involved with the PTA once again for another year alongside the fabulous group of parents and staff who make up the committee. I invite you to join us at our next meeting, it’s a great way to get to know other parents and staff!

Janine Loader We will farewell Janine Loader at the end of Term 1. Janine has worked at the Junior Campus for the past eight years as our office manager, executive officer and also as P.A. for the Associate Principal.Janine is a dedicated and caring person, and is held in high regard by all the Junior Campus staff. She is a highly organised, effective and efficient professional, who worked hard to ensure the office ran

smoothly. Janine’s door was always open for staff to talk to her, she was ready to listen and support others. Janine always appeared calm and unruffled, even at peak times of busyness; she truly mastered the art of the serene swan paddling madly under the water. We thank Janine for all the mahi she has done over the years for James Hargest College, and we all wish Janine the best in her new ventures; we will really miss her.

Frances Matheson JHC has recently farewelled Frances Matheson who taught Hard Materials and DVC. Frances has left us to concentrate on her studies. We wish her all the best for the future.

Staff News Farewell

Welcome

Ange Potter James Hargest College Senior Campus is thrilled to welcome Ange Potter back to the team. Ange worked in the Careers Department for five years, leaving in 2018. She then worked at a variety of workplaces including Number 10 and Findex before she saw the error of her ways and came back to join us in March. Ange is the friendly welcoming face for students in the Student Administration

area. Ange is a bubbly, caring person and we are delighted to welcome her back to the team.

Brian Coyle We are fortunate to welcome Brian Coyle back to James Hargest College. Brian has a wealth of experience in the Hard Materials area and shares his knowledge with students with a smile and positivity. He has already made a wonderful contribution to the Hard Materials department and staff and students are delighted to be working with him.

to his classroom. As I look around his office and wonder if I will get it tidied in time, I look at the resources and the learning they contain – the richness of the language, the richness of the culture, and the valuable contributions that many people make to this department. The strength of the aroha and manaakitanga shown within the whānau group is supported by the traditions of kapa haka performance. Their recent noho marae – where they worked on their competition bracket for Hautonga in Dunedin on 10 July – is a part of the cultural wrap-around offered within the department. My sincere thanks go to Tania Neho and Jacinta Kerepeti Gilbert for doing the hard work with the rōpu kapa haka, to parents who supplied kai and cleaning-power for the noho marae, to Fiona Walker for being camp mum, and to Troy McNaught for supporting our Monday waiata. I take a lot

of pride in seeing the students showing such passion as they put in the hard mahi, but many people weave their skills together to help this all happen.Ako – reciprocal learning and teaching – is a mainstay in the learning here, and I feel honoured to have been included in this reciprocity. I have learned so much from my students, and I hope that they feel that I have cared for them, as much as I have felt them caring for me. Tēnā rawa atu koutou – ia tangata, ia tangata – for all you have given me. Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui.

Ngā mihi, Whaea Nichi Kaiako rīwhi, Te Reo Māori.

Room 4 had the most amazing weather while at Camp Omaui. The standard of bivouacs was very impressive. Mountain biking with Constable Marty was a challenge but lots of fun. Making and cooking damper for the first time was a huge hit too. We had a blast and new friendships have been formed.

James Hargest College Senior Campus students had the opportunity to attend a workshop with New Zealand author and cartoonist, Stu Duval. Students were shown how to develop stories, how to push through writers block, and how to end a story successfully.

The Year 8’s have been using Minecraft Education in Science, showing Mrs Savory how to host a world! The Year 7’s are investigating how putting different sized beakers over candle flames affects how long the candle burns for.

Year 11 students recently attended a field trip to the Woodlands Ag Research Centre (below). Students enjoyed the opportunity for some hands on experience of moving sheep, seeing electronic weighing and drafting in action and the use of ultrasound to check lambs’ lungs for pneumonia. The friendly farm huntaway was also a big hit!

March 16 2020 seemed an innocent enough day. Tarrah Shirley, Lucy Machen, Lucy Nind Jacob Mika, Thomas Walker & Corban Evans spent the day in Dunedin attending a conference designed to prepare them to lead the Senior Campus into fundraising for our sponsored child and the 40 Hour Famine. And then came lockdown. Undeterred, as soon as school was back, work began. While the total raised was smaller than previous years, it was enough to tip Hargest over $150,000.00 total raised across the years. Shout out to Mrs Fiona Meyers who led most of the teams of senior students over the years. This year Ella Dougherty, Gemma McAlister, Natasha Lewis and Courtnee Morrison will attend the training day on May 6 with Mrs Nicola Craig.

Students in Years 9 to 11, who enjoy a challenge, are invited to enter the Otago University Maths Competition. To enter you need to pay $5 to the main office by Monday 12 April. This is a challenging competition for students who enjoy problem solving and who are able to communicate their working clearly. This year the competition will be held in two parts. The first part (to be held on Wednesday 14 April) will be an on-line multi-choice and short answer competition. Students who place in the top 15% of entrants in the first part of the competition will then be invited to enter the second part of the competition (to be held on Wednesday 12 May). This part will involve a written test where full working is expected to be shown. Students compete against others in the same year level. If you have queries please contact Mrs Redmond: [email protected]

Celebrating Excellence Academic Blues Awards Ceremonyfor achievements in 2020

On Tuesday 9 March we celebrated outstanding student achievement from 2020. It was a wonderful occasion where we were once again in awe of the impressive array of student achievement. We celebrated superb academic achievements from 2020 including Subject Excellence Endorsements as well as overall Year Level NCEA Certificates endorsed with Excellence. These achievements are even more remarkable given the challenges of 2020 and the time spent out of the classroom. Special mention must go to the following students who achieved Excellence

endorsements in all six of their subjects, as well as overall Excellence endorsement, a truly outstanding achievement. Level

One 2020 - Halle Faherty, Brianna Loan and Alice McIntosh. Level Two 2020 Finn Cruickshank.

The James Hargest College 100 Club is designed to celebrate the highest academic success. Students need to earn the required Excellence credits in

one calendar year and achieve almost all, if not all of the credits on offer at Excellence level. This is a superb achievement and the students who

achieved this magnificent honour should be very proud of their outstanding work across the curriculum.

Miss Pickering’s Year 13 English class were treated by Ms Adam to a blind speed ‘date’ with their potential Level 3 class texts to choose which book they wanted to spend more time with this year. Each date was rated on their reputation, profile, looks and a sample of food from the book. Hopefully, all the students have found their perfect match!

Here’s what some of the students said:• The food was really good! The food

was a really different perspective to judge a book on, it connected different senses together.

• It was really interesting to have aspects slowly revealed to us and examine the judgements we make in relation to those aspects. Especially as the cover was revealed much later - we often make snap judgements based on the cover but by that stage

you’d already had other things about the book to think about.

• It was great - out of the classroom, a different experience and a different way to think about books.

• Everyone loves food so that was great! It was really engaging. It also appealed to our short attention spans. Sometimes it was a shock to discover which book it was. It was interesting to examine and discard some of the different impressions we made.

• It was a refreshing way of looking at books - so different to what we normally do - using every aspect individually instead of a pre-based bias. I enjoyed thinking about and trying to figure out which book it was before it was revealed to me.

The experience also prompted some discussion around the way in which we view New Zealand literature in relation to the Literary Canon of Classics. The increasing body of amazing texts we have available to us in New Zealand, written by kiwi authors observing and commenting on the society we live within, should be respected and we hope our students choose to grow their appreciation of these over time.

The Bebras Computing Challenge introduces computational thinking (i.e. thinking like a computer) to students. The challenge identifies how well students’ skills are developed in computational thinking. It is organised in over 30 countries and designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. Each participant gets 45 minutes to answer a

set of multiple-choice questions that focus on computational and logical thinking. There were 13 James Hargest College Senior Campus students who completed the challenge for 2021 online this term. The results were very pleasing! In the Cadets category (Year 9/10), Hailey Macpherson got a Merit. In the Juniors category (Year 11), Michael Clinckett and Declan Crombie obtained a Distinction. Micheal Clinckett was placed 1st= with two other students in New Zealand in the Juniors category. In the Seniors category (Year 12/13), Olivia Ballantyne and Max Russell obtained a Distinction. Congratulations!

Year 10 Spanish students read their book to new entrants at Windsor North School on Monday 22nd of March. It was very satisfying for these students to be able to have a purpose for the picture book that they have created in Spanish and to share it with a young audience.

All LEO Leaders are excited to have all of the new members inaugurated as we keep getting to work! The inauguration ceremony was a great way to think about what LEO can do and the value the Club adds to our society. We were thrilled that Julie Brown, the 202F District LEO Convenor and Gordon Duston the LEO advisor were able to come and speak to our whole club about the values and history embedded in LEO. We are thrilled to report that we have already raised over $750 this year. We would like to thank our Leadership team for getting in and making this happen. COVID-19 and NZ border restrictions have severely hampered physical international student engagement and recruitment activities for NZ schools. Before this, JHC has enjoyed a long standing relationship with Prince Royal College (PRC), in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Every year we receive students from PRC who come to experience life in Invercargill. As a result of the pandemic, we are looking for opportunities to maintain our relationships and technology is allowing us to engage prospective students. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Education New Zealand (ENZ) and Prince Royal College to offer an online exchange programme. Six James Hargest Students will be connecting with 24 Prince Royal College Students over the next month.

Our Duke Of Ed group had an awesome action-packed weekend in the beautiful southern area of Omaui, filled with tramping, first aid and fun. Together we

learnt about how to light fires, build shelters and work together in first aid scenarios. This was an

incredible experience learning about team building as well as navigating

our way around the local native bush, which has enhanced

the skills one needs when tramping. A huge thank you to all of

the adults who volunteered and gave up

their time for this weekend away, it was

very much appreciated and has really

benefited the students in their knowledge of the outdoors!

Athletics Junior Campus

Lawn Bowls South Look and Secondary School

On Tuesday the 9th of March, we had a stunning day at Surrey Park for our Junior Campus Athletics. It was spectacular to see so many students trying their best on each of their track and field events, earning as many points as they could for their house.

Students were given the option to enter into Championship or Non-championship events. Being in a Championship event meant that if a student performed exceedingly well, their result was recorded. On the day, we had six outstanding students who managed to break nine previous records in their age group events.

Student Safety

Before and After School Safety

Students may not be on the school grounds before 8.20am, unless attending Before School Maths. This is a safety issue as supervision is not available prior to 8.20am. We also do not have supervision available after school, so unless your child has an afterschool activity within the school, please ensure they are collected by 3.30.Students are not to use the staff car park on Layard Street as a walkway area and parents are not to use this as a drive through to drop or pick up children before or after school, again this is for safety.

As winter approaches we ask parents to be mindful of their children who travel to and from school by foot and by bike, scooter etc. It is beginning to get dark earlier, so students need to ensure they are visible and travelling in well-lit areas, e.g. NOT on the Waihopai walkway after dark.Reflector tape is available for sale in the Fabrics Room and can be sewn onto the back of a jacket or school bag to enhance visibility on dark winter mornings.Suggestions are that students always travel with a buddy and that jackets/bags have fluorescence on them.Bikes must have white/red lights.

Year 7 Vision Testing

Winter Uniform Update

The Vision Technicians visit the Junior Campus to undertake vision screening for all Year 7 students. Your child will not be screened if they are under the care of a Specialist and/or Optometrist. Parents/caregivers will be notified if further assessment is required by an Optometrist. If you do NOT wish your child to be screened, please notify the school. Some Year 8 students who were absent in Year 7, or who require retesting, may also be seen by the Vision Technicians.

A reminder about the correct wearing of James Hargest College uniform for the winter season.• Kilts or A-line skirt may be worn

throughout the year at both the Junior and Senior Campus. Skirts must be of a reasonable length, neither very short nor longer than mid-calf. Long pants are available as an alternative for the winter skirt/kilt.

• Undergarments may be a plain white t-shirt, merino or polyprop worn under the uniform for extra warmth (should not be visible below blouse/shirt hems or sleeves).

• Blazers may be worn at both the Junior and Senior Campus.

• Scarves and beanies are optional but must be the school standard cardinal red with gold stripe.

• Black or other coloured scarves are not to be worn.

• Gloves may be black.• Any plain black weatherproof jacket

(not cotton) may be worn to and from school.

Soon to be available is a Hargest soft shell jacket (Kooga). More information for purchasing to be announced soon.
