CIRCULARProt. No. 139/2019“Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise” (Deut 6: 6-7). Dear beloved brothers and sisters and my dear children in Jesus Christ,The new Academic Year begins soon. Children are getting ready for serious study with a refreshed mind. I extend my sincere wishes and paternal blessings to everyone in the coming Academic Year. As we begin our Catechism classes on September 08, 2019, I would like to appreciate honestly all the parish priests, catechism teachers and all who are engaged in this noble ministry of the Church. Jesus said: “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Mt. 19, 14). Dear children, grow in the love of Jesus drawing you close to Him. The catechetical ministry is one of the major focus of our Diocese. The entire Catechism course is centered in the four pillars of the Catechism meticulously described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. 1) The Profession of Faith (Creed) 2) The Celebration of Christian Mystery (Liturgy) 3) Life in Christ (Morality) and 4) Christian Prayer (Cf. CCC, 1). Dogmatic study of the fundamental principles and the articles of Catholic Faith bestow on us a deep faith in the mystery of Triune God. The mystery we believe is celebrated in the Sacred Liturgy of the Church including the sacraments and the sacramentals. The Holy Eucharist is the summit of all the liturgical celebration. Sacred Liturgy evokes us to transform our lives into the person of Jesus Christ through the promptings of Holy Spirit to become a true disciple by observing Christian values and morals based on the Ten Commandments. The mystery believed, celebrated and lived leads us to a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God. This relationship is prayer, indeed a gift from God (Cf. CCC, 2558). So Catechesis is a faith journey

Eparchy Bulletin - August 2019 05 Vol. 3, No. 08

to witness the Divine mystery. It is an established fact that nothing or no one can replace the timely and effective influence of the parents in the faith journey of a child. In today’s society, dear parents you have to deal with various challenges in the faith formation of your children such as, impacts of consumerism, secularism and cultural diversities, huge influence of social media, and the similar kind. Usually, the catechism children out of seven days in a week, only 90 minutes are with the catechists and in the Church ambiance; and all the rest where are they? So, the parents are the models and the primary teachers of faith and morals by providing a natural environment for children to grow in the integrity of personality. Catechism of the Catholic Church exhorts: “Through the grace of the Sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents should initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are “first heralds” for their children. They should associate them from their tenderest years with the life of the Church.” (CCC, 2225). Hence, it is not limited in taking your children for the Sacraments of Initiation, namely, Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion and relinquishes your responsibilities to the priests or religious sister or catechists who instruct your children on basic doctrine of faith. It goes furthermore as CCC teaches: “Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child’s earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family Catechesis proceeds, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families. It is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents.”The regular catechism class at the Church is the extended ministry done at home. An unconvinced question sometimes put forward by the parents is, what I have to do with the faith formation of my children. You know your children emotionally, physically and spiritually more than any other person.

Eparchy Bulletin - August 2019 06 Vol. 3, No. 08

So accompany your child to foster his/her faith formation diligently is an unblemished responsibility carried out by you. You are the prime Gospel teachers of your children. I congratulate you dear parents for bringing your children close to Jesus taking all the efforts. It is a Divine duty remarkably accomplished by the parents. Above all, the Catechetical formation of children in parish is not a single-handed effort by the pastor or the catechism teachers. But it is a collective ministry assiduously done by the parish priest, parents, catechism teachers and the whole ecclesiastical community together. To cherish this end, I urge you to form Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in every parish to enhance the coordination of all the persons involved in the catechetical formation witnessing Christ. Let us engage earnestly in handing over our Faith and Tradition to the next generation fully and perfectly with deep conviction resolving ourselves and supporting wholeheartedly the catechetical ministry of the Church. Dear All, I wholeheartedly appreciate the tireless and altruistic ministry of Rev. Fr. Martin Augustine SDB (Eparchial Director), Rev. Sr. Jeslin CMC (Eparchial Associate Director), Rev. Fr. Augustine Kallumkatharyil (Associate Director for Western Region), Rev. pastors, catechism teachers, commission members and parents. I thank you most sincerely on behalf of the Department of Catechism of the Eparchy of Mississauga. Wish you all a joyful and fruitful new faith formation year!May Lord grant you all His abundant blessings!

Yours fraternally in Christ, the Divine Master

Pastoral Visit - Nova Scotia 19th to 25th July, 2019

We are immensely happy to present a small report of the Pastoral Visit of H.E. Mar Jose Kalluvelil from 19 - 25 July 2019 in the Province of Nova Scotia. It was very fruitful and successful as it gave a significant impetus on the spiritual and social life of communities in Halifax, Berwick, Bridge Water and Sidney. The meeting with Parish Council members at Halifax on 20 July was productive. It could clarify many concerns like CRA Charity Registration of the parish, faith formation of the children, code of pastoral conduct, appointment of the new priest, financial policies, diocesan registers, pre-marriage courses and retreats and commencing of new mission centers at Bridge Water and Sidney. Almost all the members actively participated in the Holy Mass offered by His Excellency with Rev. Fr. Thomas Thekkekara, the pastor, at Ave Maria Mission, Berwick on 21 July at 10.30 am. It was followed by a public meeting in which an Ad hoc committee was formed; and decided to begin the process for CRA registration under the leadership of Nithin Jose, the General Coordinator.

The Holy Mass in the afternoon at 4.00 pm at the Holy Family Parish, Halifax was well attended by the parishioners. Mr. Arun Johny and Mr. Nithin Jose were elected as Pastoral Council Members in Halifax and Berwick respectively. The first visit of His Excellency at Cape Breton University and the Holy Mass for

the International Students at Holy Redeemer Church were truly an energizing and spirit filled experience. The formation of St. Augustine Syro-Malabar Mission, Sidney was one of the major gifts of God during this pastoral visit. Mr. Samuel, the Vice President of Cape Breton University was elected as the General Coordinator of this new Mission.

The wholehearted support and encouragement of priests in Halifax and Sidney were specially recognized. Rev. Frs. Thomas Thekkekara, Jose Thomas and the Parish Council Members under the leadership of Mr. Linto Joseph, have successfully coordinated all the events of the pastoral visits.

FOCUS 2019Under the aegis of the Department of Youth Apostolate, Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, one of the biggest International Youth Meet called “Focus 2019” is being organized. This one-day event takes place on Saturday, September 28, 2019. More than 500 youth from different parts of Ontario and beyond are expected to participate. They are mostly composed of international students, young couples, young professionals, youth leaders, resource persons, priests, religious and event organizers. This program is expected to create a great impact in the Catholic Church of Canada and the Syro-Malabar Youth Movement in Canada. An online link for registration, and poster with QR code is ready. Kindly send this poster to our international youth. We request your humble prayers for the success of the event and that every participant may experience a true union with Christ and meaningful long-lasting communion and fellowship with one another.WHAT IS FOCUS?Focus is an International Youth Meet aimed at uniting International Students belonging to different groups and instilling in them a feeling of oneness among themselves and with the Church. The event is guaranteed to be fun-filled and informative with a healthy blend of spiritual, social and cultural activities. It is anticipated to be a day that would benefit the participants in various aspects of their life in Canada.

School of Evangelization Core Team 2019

Eparchy Bulletin - August 2019 27 Vol. 3, No. 08

WHY FOCUS?We all know that international students are a group of young adults who come to Canada with a lot of dreams and high hopes for their future, leaving behind their dear and near ones. As a result, most of them do face depression, home sickness and loneliness during the initial days and weeks. Some are lucky and blend into the study and work culture here and achieve success gradually. While there may be some who end up being over-stressed, get into wrong relationships, or have academic issues, etc. that may affect their future. It is therefore essential to motivate and guide them in the right path when given a chance and provide a platform to do so. Yes, this is the very purpose of Focus. Focus will ensure that they are all aware that there is a Youth Apostolate actively working to support them in their needs. Many of you might wonder as to how a one-day program can make a commendable difference in their lives. Although Focus is a one-day program, we can still “make hay while the sun shines”, through the discovery of resources available to youth, lessons learnt from resource persons, the networking opportunity with peers and seniors who are well established and gaining a sense of belonging to the church and community at large will all be just the beginning of more to follow. If our youth benefits from it, the success is undoubtedly ours for the future of our Church lies in their hands. We have a special team coordinating the event including the leaders of international students, members of Syro-Malabar Youth Mississauga (SMYM), Jesus Youth (JY) and the Department of Social Services (DSS) under the leadership of His Excellency Mar Jose Kalluvelil and Chairmanship of Rev. Fr. Saji Thomas CMI, Director, Youth Apostolate. I humbly request you all to join hands with us and make it a grand success by helping build more powerful citizens for Canada and evangelizers for the Church.

Focus-2019 Prayer

1 John 2:14 says, “I write to you, young people, because you are strong and the Word of God abides in you,

and you have overcome the evil one”Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, trusting in your unconditional love and endless mercy, we humbly surrender our First ‘International Youth Meet’ into your mighty hands, bless and seal it with your power and love. O Lord our master and guide, we realize this is the favourable time for us to re-focus our attention on you and walk closely with you, so that by your grace we may be rooted in faith and do your will in this new homeland of Canada.

We surrender our families and friends, hopes and anxieties, struggles and failures, studies, work and financial uncertainties and everything Lord, under the foot of the holy cross. Give us courage to keep moving ahead in life with confidence and hope.

Amighty and eternal God, shower your blessings and graces on all the mission works led by Bishop Mar Jose Kaluvelil and the entire Eparchy of Mississauga.

Bless and guide Rev. Fr. Saji, our Youth Director and all Youth Apostolate Team Members who are involved in the planning and coordination of the Youth Meet. May you empower them and enrich all of us with the gifts and fruits of your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name we ask this prayer. Amen

And all other committee members will try their level best to study more about the media policy. Committee decided to have two representatives from each parish or mission to join with the existing committee to make work faster and to have a good network in the Eparchy and between parishes. One of the good suggestions from the committee was to involve university students who are doing their studies on Media, Communication and Journalism. I request the priests to give the name of members who are expert in Social Media Communication. The meeting was very fruitful and ended with blessing of Bishop.

Rev. Fr. Boby Joy DirectorMedia Commission

MEDIA COMMISSION

The Eparchy of Mississauga has stepped to a new milestone named Media Commission. Bishop Jose Kalluvelil appointed Fr. Boby Muttathuvalayil as the director and Fr. Jojo changanamthundathil as the associate director of Media Commission. We had a detailed meeting with Bishop and some IT experts from some of the parishes. Bishop Jose Kalluvelil expressed heartfelt gratitude to Fr. John Mylamvelil the former director of media commission. He has done a wonderful work amidst of his multitudes of other ministries. All the committee members with one voice agreed to the suggestion to make public the ministries of Eparchy and each individual parish through social media. As a result, committee made the decision to start with Face Book, Instagram and Twitter as official Social Medias of Eparchy of Mississauga. Fr. Boby Joy is entrusted with the task of making a Media policy for the Eparchy of Mississauga.

FINANCE

I am happy that 15 Parishes/Missions of our Eparchy have registered under CRA. Still there are some more parishes and missions to be registered under CRA. So we are planning to have a group movement for the registration process for the remaining parishes and missions. I would like to inform you that the existing name of charity (Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro Malabar Catholics in Canada) is changed and the new name (Eparchy of Mississauga) is already approved by CRA. Newly formed parishes and missions will be registered as separate entity under the common head, Eparchy of Mississauga. Those parishes registered individually shall undergo the process of Amalgamation. Those remaining parishes that are not registered under the Eparchy of Mississauga shall give their details to this office to start the registration process.

ST. JOSEPH HAMILTON &ST. MOTHER TERESA NIAGARA FALLS

Parish PilgrimageThis year the Hamilton and Niagara Parishes visited the Martyrs Shrine Midland on Saturday, July 6. The Shrine has about 74 acres of land and has this very beautiful church which has historical and spiritual value. All pilgrims were able to get in and venerate the relics of the saints kept in the church. It was very nice and sunny day so we were able to hold a open air Holy Mass and individual blessing with the relics of the Saints, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Mylamvelil, at St. Mother Theresa Pavilion. After the Holy Mass we had lunch which was arranged by both parishes and was very delicious. We then visited the St. Marie among the Huron site. It was nice to see a fenced community that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area of Native Wendat community where the Jesuits missionaries lived since the 16th century. There were several games played between the Niagara and Hamilton parishes. Later on in the evening we had dinner and left Martyrs Shrine at 8 pm. It was a wonderful trip, 178 parishioners (58 from Hamilton and 120 from Niagara) including children and seniors joined the trip.
