GROOVE U is the reason I am able to make my dream job my career. There is nothing else in this world quite like the

experience I was given here.

— Jessica Peer (2016)

I honestly owe GROOVE U my life. Without it, I’d be years

behind where I am today. Amazing investment. It is without a doubt the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and I mean that 110%. It’s an amazing program with an even more amazing

faculty.

— Garett Speakman (2015)

Attending this school was the best career decision

I could have made. The classes go above and beyond to prepare you for managing your career in the music industry and the networking opportunities and valuable resume

building experience you will gain during your time at the school is invaluable

to your success.

— Aaron Dill (2014)

I love the people, love the classes, love the passion. I don’t

think I’ve ever seen a place where the instructors are as passionate

as the students. I think it’s the best investment

I’ve ever made.

Scale TitleFrom the Founder1 : ∞

For my entire professional career, all my trusted influencers have been looking backwards.

My high school band director told me my career choices were to play in an orchestra, compose music for an orchestra, or become a music teacher. (Sidebar: I didn’t want to do any of those things, so I did what any sensible young man would do and I joined the Navy.) Later on, my music industry professors at Belmont University never mentioned the words “file trading” or “.mp3,” even though Napster hit the industry less than a year after I graduated.

In 2009 after a decade working for major and independent record labels, recording studios, music publishers, music industry trade publications, and starting a music industry program at a community college, I found myself working at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. That same year, Berklee hosted a conference of music industry educators, and as I listened to them speak I only heard the same myopic perspectives that I had heard when I was in high school and later when I was a college student.

They were using the wrong verbiage. They said, “Well, it’s tough to educate students because the music industry is changing.” They were only half-correct: the music industry wasn’t changing, it had changed… over 20 years ago. I realized they were failing to fulfill their primary job as educators — to prepare students for a career in this changed music industry. To train students not for the careers that “were” or even the careers that “are,” but rather for the careers that will be.

The gulf between what the current higher education system teaches the market “is” and what the market actually “is” is expansive and virtually insurmountable given the approach of traditional higher education. Their structure, and sadly in many cases their apathy, simply does not allow them to match the tempo at which this industry moves.

So I left a fantastic job, one that most people work a lifetime to achieve, with the sole intent of fixing this broken system. GROOVE U takes an entirely different approach to music industry higher education. We approached the market first and asked them one simple question, “What skills do you need your employees to have in the immediate future?” We took their answers and built an entirely new music industry program. Years later, we continue to meet with different groups of employers every month and repeat that question. Every time the answer shifts, we shift with it in real-time.

This is how we fulfill our mission: through positive disruption in education we empower the artist | entrepreneur into lifelong success. This is how we come ever closer to our vision: to secure 100% job placement in-field among our graduates. This is who we are. This is what we do. This is GROOVE U.

Scale TitleCreative Development1 : ∞

A r t i s t Developing your music business career means being creative in your approach to your music .

GROOVE U is not a music conservatory. We do not have auditions, freshman juries, sophomore conferences, or senior recitals. There are no conducting classes or ensemble requirements.

But working in the music business means working in a business of musicians. So our students select a commercial music instrument to study, and they receive one hour every week of private lesson instruction through Vaughan Music Studios. The lesson is comprised of both technique and music theory. Students do not need to have any proficiency on the instrument they select in order to begin study; the lessons are tailored to each individual student’s aptitude level.

We can do it this way because we aren’t in the business of creating superstar artists (though some of our students have gone on to pursue full-time careers as artists.) Rather, our goal is to help our students develop an aptitude and a music language so they can intelligently converse with other “music people,” such as: artists, record producers, and session musicians.

Private lessons are included on: Guitar • Bass • Piano/Keys • Drums/Percussion • Voice

B u s i n e s s Developing your music business career means being creative in

your approach to your business .

GROOVE U is not a business school. We do not offer multiple courses in accounting, macro and micro economics, finance, marketing, and strategic management courses.

Working in the music business means working in a business of creatives. Creatives don’t necessarily want to read 200 page business plans — but banks and investors do. So our students need to understand not only how to create the business plan, but also how to pitch it to other creatives.

We have a business core as a part of our curriculum to help you. These are straightforward business courses… viewed through a music lens:

‣ Business Fundamentals: principles of business, organization, structure, accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing.

‣ Entrepreneurship: principles of business management, operations management, entrepreneurship, financing, permits, licensing, HR, insurance, tax laws, and social media marketing.

‣ Entertainment and Business Law: fundamental concepts of business law and advanced concepts in entertainment law, including copyright and contracts.

C a r e e r Developing your music business

career means being creative in your approach to your career .

GROOVE U is a career program. Our job is to get our students jobs in the music industry.

Because a student’s job starts the moment they start at GROOVE U, the very first course our students take in their first term is a career development course. In that course, they develop their personal brand identity, practice networking, create professional business communication documents, and build their web portfolio.

The very last course our students take is also a career development course. They get help polishing up communication skills, job and externship search strategies, and even launching their small businesses.

And every term in-between has a career course. We formally meet every week for guest speakers, externship and job assistance, professional development workshops, and conference attendance prep.

I. Conceptualize

Students are given only 4 project parameters:

A. Must incorporate every classmate in every major;

B. Must craft and release a physical product;

C. Must include an event to showcase the physical project; and

D. Must be financially self-sufficient.

I I. Plan

Students create a timeline, Gantt chart, and budgets.

They recruit and then select talent from outside the program. Venues are toured, sponsor reach-out lists are generated, and third party businesses are researched.

Roles are assigned and accountability parameters for each student are established by their peers.

I I I. Execute

12 hours of in-person class time every week is committed. Faculty advise students at the start of each class session, and then students carry out the project individually and in small groups.

Every aspect of the project takes every student working together: creating social media assets, the website, ticket sales, sponsorships, contracts negotiation, permits…

I V. Deliver

The project must be delivered on-time and on budget. The accompanying event must have been sufficiently promoted, draw the expected crowd, and be satisfactorily executed from a technical standpoint.

All students should have the complete project compiled as a portfolio piece in a hard copy, which would include: budgets, charts, executed contracts, permits, style guide and graphic elements, social media metrics, etc,

Columbus bands cover songs originally written and performed by other Columbus artists. Audio production students create a recording of the cover at GROOVE U. Video students shoot a video of the band performing at GROOVE U and other notable Columbus venues and also film a short interview. Music business students press the recording to vinyl in Columbus, and use the videos to promote an album release event at a local venue, where bands who played on the album perform live. Audio students run sound for the live performance..

‣ Audio students record 9 different Columbus bands covering songs by 9 different Columbus artists and run sound at the event where Cousin Simple performs for over 200 fans.

‣ Video students shoot, edit, and publish to YouTube 12 different accompanying band videos and short interviews filmed in Columbus.

‣ Business students raise funds through GoFundMe, license the songs, press the accompanying vinyl at Musicol, release it on major streaming platforms, and book/promote the album release party at Craft ’N Vinyl.
